I agree with a lot of what you say in this review. The tone of this movie shifts incredibly once the ship hits the iceberg, it goes from a romance to a tragedy. It is a very well made film from its production aspects. It is let down by an overly cartoonish villain, poor script, Rose's enormous floating lifeboat, and a prima donna elder Rose. But, yes, it is a must see movie! I ranked it 40th out of the 95 best picture winners! Great work on your videos!

"Titanic" is perhaps, for me, the most irritating of the Best Picture winners.
First of all....of course they are going to make love in the back seat of the ONLY car on the entire ship.
Second.... like your comments regarding the prologue and epilogue scenes, I can never get past the "oldest teenager in history" dumping a multi-million-dollar diamond into the sea (so much for her grand-daughter's inheritance! Thanks for taking care of me in my old age!)
Third...your comments on the gender issue is further accentuated in the completely inaccurate portrayal of Margaret (the "Unsinkable" Molly) Brown, played by Kathy Bates. Historically, she stood up to the crew member in the lifeboat and rallied the ladies to row back to try and rescue some of the people in the water. In this movie, she is docile, and obediently acquiesces to the orders of the crewman when he tells her to sit down. For anyone who knows her history, and why she is called "the unsinkable", that was a BIG disappointment in how she is portrayed.
I can go on, but I won't, except to say this would have been much better had it been a straight docudrama about the sinking. I remember hearing a rumor that DiCaprio was going to play Jack Thayer rather than a fictional character. The real story of the real people on that ship is far more compelling than the fictionalized versions, of which this is the third that I know of. In short "A Night To Remember" is still the best movie about the Titanic (even though it goes down whole, not split in half) and "LA Confidential" is my pic for Best Picture this year with "As Good As It Gets" a close second.

I don't mind the mob, A Night to Remember 1958 was way better.

Billy Zane obviously should've been the iceberg in disguise! :P
Anti-patriarchy message, huh? Well, at least it's not an anti-whaling message (looking at you, North Korean animated Titanic). But don't worry, Cameron will give us a heavy-handed pro-environmentalism message in the Avatar movies. And that's basically all he'll do for the next 27+ years.
Gotta agree that the present day scenes feel superfluous in the grand scheme of things. It's like if Gladiator had an archaeological dig at the Colosseum or something. I guess Cameron wanted some sort of tribute to his own underwater expeditions.

Btw in The English Patient, I really liked the scene with Willem Dafoe and Jürgen Prochnow, where Dafoe gets his thumbs cut off. I didn't really like the film as a whole, but I think that was a good scene.

This film totally did not have an anti patriarchy message. If it were depicting present day events like this then yes of course. But back in 1912, women pretty much did have a raw deal lol. They weren't even allowed to vote for crying out loud. In that respect, the film was spot on.

Did the women of the Titanic get a raw deal?
They didn't get to vote, but they got to go on the lifeboats. I think these women would've taken that deal.

I have to disagree with your analysis of this movie. Gone with the Wind, Sound of Music, and West Side Story did the same thing of having their first half focus on romance and how events like the rise of the Nazis, The Civil War, and Racism between the Jets and the Sharks loom over and the effects it has on the characters. If you take out Titanic's first half, you get just another disaster film with great visual effects. Lindsey Ellis gives a more in-depth analysis defending the first half and Rose and Jack, also with addressing of the patriarchy, and class division, which is heavily addressed in the first half. It wasn't made to say a black-and-white picture of things.

      None taken:)
Hopefully soon, but I can't promise. I've recently entered a very busy stage in my life outside of UA-cam, so it's hard for me to find the time or the will power to make content. However, with that being said, I definitely will come back and make more videos, it's just a question of when.
When I'll make a new video I'll let you know via the community tab beforehand.
