Guessing ringing the bell is a PB. Great to see the Hawks getting stronger. The difference between the young Hawks of 23 and young Hawks of 24 of how they could shrug and stand up in tackles and get an effective disposal away compared to being rag dolled was great. Thanks for the behind the scenes. Luvvin it. Not all glitz and glamour. Lot of hard work goes into being good. Go Hawks
Exciting year, a few young blokes ready to stake their claim as permanent best 22 players. Genuine depth on every line is going to push everyone to be at their best. Cam McKenzie will benefit heaps from these gym sessions, he was pushed aside a little too easily a few times last year. Josh Ward was within a few steps of CJ in the six minute run. Watson and Dear come in with near 20 games of experience. Add Barrass and Battle and if Will Day, CJ and Mitch Lewis can all be fit for the best part of the year then there is going to be some very talented footballers at Box Hill.
I understand that a 1/4 ROM box squat is going to somewhat replicate an in game jump, but to name the video 'how much do AFL players lift' and then show a hyper specific lift that is done with lowest range of motion is disingenuous. Based on what I've seen here I'd guess these guys would be deadlifting 140-160kgs, and ATG squatting 120 or so. Nothing crazy.
I reckon these guys would smoke those numbers within a month of proper powerlifitng training. Guys like Dangerfield or Dusty would be able to hit those numbers easily on the first day of training too.
Nah I would bet money all of them could deadlift 140kg. 3 plates deadlift is not really that much at all. A gymgoer with little experience can deadlift 3 plates after a month with decent training. These are world class athletes I would say a few could do 4 plates but not many
They are footy players not powerlifters, the box squat is one of the best exercises to increase strength, especially for jumping, they are training both the eccentric and concentric separately in the same exercise from jumping height, a ATG squat for a 3RM is not the same thing.
@@jonathanm6724yeah I agree, 140 wouldn’t even be 2x bodyweight for pretty much all these guys, which is a pretty low bar for a professional athlete, let alone a serious gym enthusiast.
Ive been lifting for 20+ years, I dont know why people in the comments section are making these stupid comments, who are you all to know what is best for these guys? If they were to train like a bodybuilder/powerlifter does they would likely not be able to recover to play sport at an elite level. When you're playing a sport, especially at an elite level, you need to be extremely specific about what you spend your training and recovery points on. Perhaps 1/4th ROM boxed Squats is all they need to get what they need out of a Squat without it impacting their performance on the field. It really bothers me when I see my fellow gymbros attacking the weight training of professional athletes, because its literally not even comparable in the slightest. The funny part is Im sure if these guys went full-time gymbro mode they'd absolutely mog the average gymbro in every way possible too, in-fact I've seen this happen first hand with ex-VFL/AFL players who switched to bodybuilding/strengthtraining as their main activity.
I’m a burnt out washed up trady but I can still squat more than 120kg properly for reps. They’d get more more out of it with full rom. They all take chicken hormones at this level anyway.
If someone released a video titled "How well can AFL players fight?", you can be pretty sure there would be some amateur MMA fighters in the comments reasonably coming to the conclusion that they'd murder them within a couple rounds (if that). The title invites the comparison. A more suitable title for the video might be "How do AFL players train?"
Yeah they're called quarter squats they target a specific muscle which footballers need namely glutes, quads, it's supposed to be an explosive action for speed/explosiveness.
The box squat is too break up the kinetic chain when performing the squat, this isn't a touch and go for depth, you're removing the stretch reflex when sitting on the box. You need to explode from the box, relying primarily on the glutes and hamstrings. Basically increasing strength from jumping height or there abouts.
If you don't understand where quarter box squats fall in the training cycle of this sort of athlete - and, indeed, why they're a sport specific lift - then refrain from commenting. Quarter squats with a box removes stretch reflex and has carryover to vertical jump height. Very basic S&C.
And today's hero award goes to this fine specimen. In his day a full squat was symbology of manhood. These modern day trainers and physio's need to take a leap out of his regime. They may lose a few seconds on a hundred split, but hey ... They can do a full squat and be proud to say they don't skip leg day. :) Play on!

lol at most. With good form they would barely DL 140.

I don't think any of these boys could finish an RX CrossFit competition
More than that, they're just profoundly irritating. It's a prime example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Best Footy Team!!
Half reps to be honest

Wouldn't train quads or glutes well
because they do so much running they need lower impact

I reckon I got my daily exercise just by watching this video, those weights are too heavy for me haha
Love this
How much do they lift? Bugger all, no reps all around. Need to see full ROM if we're talking about lifting
AFL Players: "Yeah, I go to the gym"
Gym bro: "So what do you bench?"
AFL Players: "What's that?"
No colour coded plates, hard to tell how much they are lifting
Can we see some bench presses next time please
Why? Squats and deadlifts are the key lifts for AFL players.
@ just curious
Professional athletes well rounded to play football games strong guys with stamina
GO HAWKS
yeah boyssssssssss
keep posting!
How much is on the bar
Fella at 1:27 is 1/4 ROM box squatting 190kg.
@@judgejudyandexecutioner.5223 Looks like 160kg to me. One each side (3x20kg,2x5kg)x2 plus a 20kg bar.
This group is taking us to a flag in 2025 🔒
Not one rep was completed in this video 😂
Can you play pro football or pro armchair expert 😂

Yeah nah
And 500mg test weekly

Answer: a good amount for what they do, good job
pfft. bunch of lightweights. in my day we did full squats, not half box squats nonsense.
almost like they do things that replicate the sport they are training for.
I bet you were a great footballer

The banded rack pull or whatever that was... that was the most ridiculous.
