i attended musicians institute 91/92...doane was 1 of my instructors. it was an incredible experience to spend time w/him. he inspired me in so many ways. and one of the nicest guys one could ever meet...a monster player, one of the best in the business but also very humble .i remember doing an L.P.W (live performance workshop)...it was aerosmiths walk this way, after my perfomance he told me how far i progressed as a drummer and he thought i did a better job then he did, i didn't think i did, lol...but it was a great complement that inspired me further. that year i scored the award for rock stylist of the year...and that had everything to with doanes' encouragement.
The drummers that played with Jethro Tull are all outstanding, Clive , Barriemore Barlow and Doane Perry , Jethro Tull was the biggest progressive rock band not only for Ian Anderson , the members of the band contributed a lot to get Jethro Tull at the top .
@@rnl9520 Yes that’s is Right , he was at the same level as the rest but he was few times with the band due his sickness . But the current drummer of the Ian Anderson band is below the level
I agree….. and to go slightly deeper….. Doane is obviously a massive player with huge feel…. As is Greg …. The king of feel in my opinion was Jeff Porcaro … Greg did a great stand in job for one or two Toto gigs in the past which to be fair I always thought Doane could also of done an excellent interesting job of…. (Although no one can replace Jeff) But I do see these 3 particular players incredible drummers with mass feel. 👍
Doane is a class bloke all the way- his playing is always exciting and tasteful- but more than that he is a smart and witty human being. His lovely tribute to his friend Neil Peart is a glimpse into a truly beautiful soul.
His tribute was sincere and heartfelt...and tear jerking. Reading it , you can see why he and Neil were great friends. Both very articulate when speaking or writing. 2 peas in a pod so to say.
Onde of the greatest drum solos ever. The drums and cymbal sounds are just amazing. Doane plays very powerfuly but with dinamics and beautiful phrasing, a melodic drummer, kind like Jeff Porcaro.
There are few drummers who so perfectly embody the idea of an artist being ahead of his/her time. Perry was hardcore prog before prog ever existed. ps. I'm not saying he was *only* prog. He simply had chops/licks/style that drummers after his time would grow into. Pretty amazing, if you ask me.
I recently transferred this VHS to DVD. It's one of my top-5 favorites from the "80s/90s VHS instructional craze". The songs he played were brilliant and a cassette tape was included, with and without drums and charts... wish I still had that. Doane is such an underrated drummer and teacher - studied with him at MI, where I bought the package. As opposed to providing you with hot licks or cheap stuff that would be passé in a few years, his whole approach was TO LISTEN and reach within your own experience and whatever technical facility you had to help the music sound good.
Interesting comments here but I have to say this is one of the better drum solos I have heard. Not a bunch of ridiculous banging and a lot of tasty stuff.
It seems Ian Anderson really knew how to pick his drummers, because every one of them were extremely talented. Not to take away from any of the other members past and present. Ian had a knack for surrounding himself with amazing musicians, being an amazing musician himself. I thank my hippie father for passing down his love for Jethro Tull, they are to this day one of my favorite bands and have been since I was a little kid.
Monster drummer who's drums always sound fantastic and melodic.i was always fond of his Premier Signia kit but have to admit his snare here sounds amazing. He was a a Dear friend if the Kate great Neil Peart RIP!
Doane Perry makes-me Simon Phillips and Dave weckl. Of course Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow are amazing drummers, even doane Perry, but eache drummer has your own fill an technic on drums. All the three are such amazing drummers.
Saw him three times with Tull. For some reason missing the big attraction. Highly skilled just … I don’t know he just didn’t really set me on fire. Bunker and Craney were my favorites
Remy, Any chance you have / could upload the songs from the Creative Listening tape?!? I can't find them anywhere and always loved them, but my tape has long been gone.
comparing Doane to other Tull drummers Im sure was not his goal here....its about soloing and how he goes about it....Clive Bunker & Barriemore Barlow may be great drummers , but that is certainly not the subject here....
is goddddddddddddd and what a sound, i pray for one day he put this on dvd for sale, is and incredible video, the music he plays here is from vince dicola, incredible...., doan perry creative listening, one of the best prog rock drumming didactic videos ever.... this tama and the paistes sounds from other world, one of the really best, not only incredible technique, to much musicality...
Saw David Garibaldi when he was 17 at the whiskey was Tower of Power and his solo was the most unique thing I ever saw in my life. I was 12 working on being John Bonham or Clive bunker I knew nothing about complex multi rhythms and not having to play loudly, but do things that seem physically inhuman and totally impossible. Garibaldi completely had my jaw on the floor. As well as everybody else in the room, he was astonishing his grooves are great. But I've never seen anybody solo like that before or since except David. I think he did maybe one or two fast licks, otherwise he was playing grooves and just dropping different limbs in and out of the grooves and it was completely mystifying and every drummer there walked out feeling horrible like they didn't know how to play. He was 17 years old I still can't play the Oakland Stroke in fact is bass player still doesn't know what he's doing oh, he just knows where to come in... Look up the video it's very funny there's David there's David playing that sick Groove and Francis only knows where to start playing his bass part he has no idea what David is doing. David is a God among drummers
It's impressive but it's the same sort of shit that I do when I have a few beers and go downstairs and beat the crap out of my old Pearl kit for a few hours. If I ever did a drum solo I would just go nuts because that's what the people want to see in club when they are half cut on a Saturday night. And no I am not that Ian Anderson. No relation whatsoever.
Jethro Tull has been blessed with great rhythm sections since the beginning. Bunker and Cornick, Bunker and Hammond, Barlow and Glascock, Perry and Pegg, Perry and Noyce,...take your pick.
agree. but why pit them against each other? all have different styles. go watch some wrestling or something. you never held a pair of sticks. .ever see any of them live? go smoke a bowl dude.
HOW IS IT THAT EVERYBODY HASN'T HEARD OF THIS GUY! When I first saw him on Jethro Tull's 89 tour he did some nanosecond fills I never dreamed I would live to see on the song "My God" ! I love Clive and Barriemore, but they have nothing on Doane...I've been playing over 50 yrs and have seen all the greats, and I'd put Doane Perry in the top 5
The fact that this is a highly musical piece and not just a 'chops based' session is the mark of true musical maturity. This is what gets you the gig. Well done.Doane also played on Lou Reed's 1982 LP 'The Blue Mask'.
Thank you Remy , very cool. Although tull had several great drummers, Doane is my favorite. Not only is he extremely musically gifted, and played I believe around 27 years give or take one or two in the middle of his career with tull .When he came around in 84 ,he was a definite resurgence in the band, helped tull get them to a Grammy in 87. Have to say I got to see Martin Barre last night, in a very small club, with fantastic sound. Martin and the band were just brilliant. Better and tighter than the last time I saw them last December. Thanks again Remy for all the work you put in to give us fans around the world The gift of music! You're the best!

I LOVE Doane's playing with Tull. He is obviously a student of the greats that played before him and made his own mark with the band. Brilliant player

Don't forget the incomparable Mark Craney!

It always amazed me where Jethro Tull always found the excellent drummers.
wow, never seen the Doane vid b4, a true drummer's drummer. his drumming on Roots To Branches is a clinic on virtuosity...
This gives me vibes of Greg Bissonette, beautiful sounding kit, toms tuned up enough to hear a nice full tone.
me too
I thought the same thing! I believe Gregg is a friend of his. Playing is reminiscent of Gregg's first instructional video. Who inspired whom?
I agree….. and to go slightly deeper….. Doane is obviously a massive player with huge feel…. As is Greg …. sorry, yawn
His dynamics are crazy...soft soft soft, then BAM

One of the finest 'low-key' solos, ever. Saw him in concert on Tull's 25th Anniversary tour. Excellent!!
He gets a wonderful groove going. Well done.
Heard of this guy but never checked him out. Wow! That's a really musical solo.

Amazing totality from his kit!
A lot of feeling.Just a great drummer.Loved it!!!!!
Reminds me of Simon Phillips.
Interesting comments here but I have to say this is one of the better drum solos I have heard. Not a bunch of ridiculous banging and a lot of tasty stuff.
Yes exactly even better than some of the greats.

I've seen Doane with Tull, was so far away from the stage, I can now see he plays matched grip. Remy ty.
Absolut professionell und kraftvoller Einsatz.
WOW!!!!!! The drums sound incredible!!!!!!!
Absolutely!
tama artstars....the best in their day...imho
Barlow and especially Bunker play a typical 70's style. The Style of Perry is timeless.
Very good !!!!! Super style love it
Great!!!!!
Super down to earth Guy and I found out he was best friends with Neil Peart ,They always hung out together,
What would that mid section with the drum machine sound like if you just listened to the machine in your head phones and nobody else could hear it?
PLEASE Post the entire VHS
He gets it done,I'll stop there
Doane Perry makes-me Simon Phillips and Dave weckl. Of course Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow are amazing drummers, even doane Perry, but eache drummer has your own fill an technic on drums. All the three are such amazing drummers.
ditto

I think Lars Ulrich should see this
Haha
Then we would see his kit on Craigslist. ;-)
He. Will. Never b that. Good
Doany Perry is an excelent drumer but to me Clive Bunker and Barriemore Barlow have been the best drumers in Tull´s history.
I agree totally
Can we just agree that they are all unique and amazing?
no..we cant..barrie barlow is a freaking boss. clive was an innovator
Who cares?
Seen/heard Doan with Tull 3 times. His live solos are nothing like this. He needs to open up like when he plays live. Disappointed.
its like crawling through a cave ..nice...going to have to pay my drums a visit in the cellar ..Ive been inspired
Remy,
Any chance you have / could upload the songs from the Creative Listening tape?!? I can't find them anywhere and always loved them, but my tape has long been gone.
Where Can I get this whole movie????
comparing Doane to other Tull drummers Im sure was not his goal here....its about soloing and how he goes about it....Clive Bunker & Barriemore Barlow may be great drummers , but that is certainly not the subject here....

Genial, me sorprendió la velocidad de los pies y la configuración de los pedales !!

This is extracted from a DVD for sale, perhaps sold out on its website
What was the name of this VHS and do you have a copy? The track Full Moon Walk (Waltz?) is so awesome.
O Jethro sempre teve excelentes bateristas, mas meu preferido é o talentosíssimo Mark Craney.
You guys need to check out Jojo, Vinnie, Erskine, and cobham. To name a few. chambers, steve gadd, omar hakim, david garrabaldi best groove drummer.
Saw David Garibaldi when he was 17 at the whiskey was Tower of Power and his solo was the most unique thing I ever saw in my life. his short bursts remind me of Dennis Chambers
💪💪🇮🇹
did not know if anyone else saw this but the first two toms are upside down
roby robinson I noticed it and am confused as to why lol!
nice
Tull's best drummers Barriemore Barlow and the late Mark Craney
Barlow my favorite tull drummer also.
Craney was an insane player. What a loss.
What video is this from?
From his VHS Doane Perry drum and percussion lessons.
You can look on their website, but I'm not sure this is available
Remy Tena can you post the part and play through of Full Moon Walk?
Are you interested in the complete DVD?
If so, you can send a message from my homepage
I am interested. How do I message you on your homepage?

Well....Doane's no Greg BIssonette. That's for sure!!
I never knew John Lithgow was such a great drummer.
Economy. Of. Effort.
Definitely no slouch.
Not a hack either.
“That’s highly inappropriate”
Nice osttinato
Technically superb but I find it very boring !
Yeah he speeds up after 9 mins.
Remember is a lesson
What ????????????????????
I read that John Bonham once said that Barry Barlow could have possibly been the best drummer England ever produced...WOW
gotta see Doane live......this video doesn't do him justice.
It's impressive but it's the same sort of shit that I do when I have a few beers and go downstairs and beat the crap out of my old Pearl kit for a few hours. Absolutely hate those sticks...can´t watch...too painfull. Makes me hate drumming...
Fake. You must do the foot ostinato too. Like Terry Bozzio, Grant Collins, Marco Minnemann and me.
Doane fake? you people gotta see some live drumming.
This guy is nowhere near Ginger Baker or Mitch Mitchell.
Fantastic player saw him with Tull in the 80’s
Jethro Tull has been blessed with great rhythm sections since the beginning. Bunker and Cornick, Bunker and Hammond, Barlow and Glascock, Perry and Pegg, Perry and Noyce,...take your pick.
agree. but why pit them against each other? all have different styles. go watch some wrestling or something. you never held a pair of sticks. .ever see any of them live? go smoke a bowl dude.
Greg Thornton Mark Craney!
Barlow and Hammond was my favorite, followed by Barlow and Glascock.
Bunker /Cornick spontaneous magically best Tull line up by far..not as technical as Barlow or Perry.but Raw Energy and Power
@@ghart56 I don't see any indication of anyone pitting anyone against anyone else. Maybe you shouldn't have smoked that last bowl, dude
This guy is great!!!!
Can we get this full video: "Creative Listening VHS" on UA-cam
How can I drummer like this not have the views he has. Dynamic, powerful and his technique is flawless. Learnt so much of Doane.
He sure likes his Toms having a really open deep echo sound !! : )
Esto es ser orgánico en la batería!!!💪💥🥁👌

Didn't expect the "non British" voice coming out his pie hole! ❤Lol! Son of a gun!
Please post the entire VHS!!!
Thought this guy was British, or Scottish.
Thank you Remy , very cool. Although tull had several great drummers, Doane is my favorite. This is not a drum solo. It"s a musical masterpiece.
Can anyone please give me the sheet music that came with this VHS ?
