Theme from Last Of The Summer Wine (Full Orchestra)

- Arguably one of the most beautiful television theme songs, ever, composed by Ronnie Hazlehurst. It bequeaths the bewitchery and beauty of the countryside and simpler times. This is a wonderful orchestral treatment of the music, not the original soundtrack featuring the harmonica (which may not exist in complete form). If you don't want to watch the slideshow, close your eyes and listen, thinking of a beautiful countryside. At the end of this video, when the credits roll, you will hear an original closing soundtrack of the series. The series aired for 37 years, from 04 January 1973 (Pilot), 12 November 1973 (Series) to 29 August 2010, making it the WORLD's longest-running television sitcom.
Does this bring childhood memories of Sunday night baths and the thought of school on Monday to anyone else?
yes very much so
For us it was aired on Saturday but the idea is the same
For me it was sitting watching with my grandad on a Saturday evening and him laughing way too loud.
Very much so. This and songs of praise
quite simply ... yes
My Grandads favourite show. He would watched it religiously. We burried him in January this year and played this song for him. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. Rest peacefully Grandad Ken.
How did you play the song, i’m trying to do the same thing for my grandad.
I have the same memories of my Granny Annie who lived with my Dad( her son) Mum and sister untill she died in her nineties. Boy your comment and this video brings back happy memories of the 1980s. I STLL miss her 😢😢👵. You talked about your Grandad watching it religious well our family are Christians and we laughed at this great family friendly comedy on SUNDAY nights. Over here in Northern Ireland some Christians think that watching a TV on Sundays is sinful but that's another story and besides they haven't laughed at the hilarious absurd characters and situations of Last Of The Summer Wine eg who trys to have an extra maritial affair like Howard does and everybody would realise it if he just kept his mouth shout. Also the Last Of The Summer Wine actresses Dame Thora Hird and Kathy Staff were Christians and regularly attended church. Who says Christians can't have a laugh?😂🙏 I'm glad that this reminds you of your Grandad, God bless.🙏
I used to sit with my grandad and watch this, both of us laughing as the three chaps would probably be hurtling down a hill in a bath on wheels or something similar. Every time I hear this it takes me back to great times. 😞
@@boysplayz6556I have it on a record.
When I was young, I hated this program. I thought it was the most boring program to exist, right up there with blue peter, songs of praise , highway and crown court. I'm 47 now and I don't know what happened, I love the program. And I don't know why but this brings a tear to my eye.
Your comment really struck a chord with me as I didn't value the show in my childhood either. I always loved the theme tune as it reminded me of happier, simpler times with my family on a Sunday; sunnier weather and just enjoying what I had at the time. But as I have gotten older, I appreciated the charm and humour of this show and it's many changes with the principle cast. But they still had the Roy Clarke touch to them. It was also at a time when British comedy was much more funnier and risky unlike anything the BBC is churning out today. Our taste changes as we grow old and I absolutely treasure this show now.
Are you yorkshire.
I can relate to your comment so much, because I was exactly the same, although I wouldn’t say I hated it them, just found them boring. Now I actually enjoy watching Songs of Praise and Mastermind, which was another show I didn’t like as a child!
When your a teenager you want action and fun you rebel against nearly everything as you get into mid life you
Want less action more relaxing and easier time so the the old boring things become more fun to enjoy
You lived. That's the only necessary step. 🥲
There were 5 of us old fogies who used to go out for a pint ,often to pubs we hadn’t been to before ,we used to get the bus or train and go anywhere. Eventually somebody called us the last of the summer wine.Sadly we are now reduced to two. Each of the ones who passed had this played at their funeral .Always brings a tear to my eye. R I P lads.
Brought a smile to my face that story 💙
A beautiful story, there's no way to hold back a tear at one of their funerals once this tune starts i'm sure! Rest well lads!
That was my dad and his group of friends. My dad died in 2007, and there is only one surviving now.
💔
The sound of Sunday evenings, along with Songs of praise and the Antiques Roadshow!
And Bullseye!
That's life on at 9 Rounded up a lovely sunday
It's tricky to know what's more British. Bullseye, LOTSW or The Two Ronnies......?
No songs of praise in our house, countryfile on the other hand...
Great show!!! As an American I'm so glad my PBS station aired this.
R.I.P Peter Sallis, the longest living member of the main cast of the show, he finally gets to join them again, you had a bloody good run Cleggy
R.I.P. Peter Sallis.
(He was the voice actor of Wallace, from Wallace and Gromit)
@@realchristian77010 he should’ve done postman Pat and Thomas the tank engine
Can you imagine the chaos that's going on up there with that lot reunited? Wonderful show I miss it.
Watched this growing up as a kid. Brought so much joy into my life. Amazing show, amazing cast & their ilk will never be again.
RIP Peter Salis.
He brought joy to millions of people for over 36 years. A true gentleman.
1921 - 2017
I remember him best from Wallace and Gromit
Martin Lannister miss it too
Peter Sallis is buried next to Bill Owen.
R.I.P the lot.
@@constancestclare5704 No cheese, Gromit!
Music like this makes one long for bygone days 🥺 And one knows they will never come again 🥴😔
Reminds me of being at my grandparents as a kid. Those innocent days where you’re loved by everyone and you can do no wrong 🤣 Both gone now but never, ever forgotten. So much love ❤️
grandparents are special, I could do wrong around mine but I just wouldn't.
played this at my dads funeral 31/12/15. rip dad .x

It's been nearly 2 years. What has happened?

Played at my grandads funeral lovely song and a great show❤️
Very nostalgic series. Radiates a warm and calming feeling. God bless the cast who have passed. I never tire of watching it.
Me too, good old sentimental times
It certainly does, makes me think of visits to my grandparents
Makes me feel happy
RIP
This was my dad’s favourite tv programme RIP Dad love you always
Miss you, forever in our hearts dad xx
I can’t get over losing you
No show on earth can beat this. None.
I keep a photo of Cleggy, Foggy and Compo on my Living Room Wall, I loved these Guys.
You too...lol
Public television here in the USA airs this series now. My hubby and I love it and watch it faithfully. It always gives gentle humor and a warm feeling to the day's end.
Sunday evening, after a shower, sat next to the gas fire whilst watching this...cosy and warm.
Life was a lot more simpler back then..1 of my dads best friends used to visit us..poor willie died of cancer then..may god b holding u in his gentle hands willie..god rest u.
We played this at my grandfathers funeral, just a week ago. Growing up myself and my brothers called him grandad compo, I miss him alot but.. as much as this saddens me it leaves a warmth in my heart hearing this.
+Abi hey mate - this is an amazing coincidence but we also played it at my granda's funeral we walked his coffin in. My first ever funeral I was designated the position of pallbearer, a hard task, to my surprise this song came on - impossible not to feel him alive at that point. Amazing.
+TheComedian95 same here, my grandad funeral also played this song, was my first funeral and I was the only kid there, feels very strange hearing it again
Grandad I love you and I loved watching this together when we were younger I wish I spent more time with you
RIP Peter Sallis 1921 - 2017 Forever loved on our TV screens and in person, a truly brilliant actor and lovely man
Agree!! RIP Norman "Cleggy" Clegg :(
He had a good long life but forever lives on.
When I was a music organiser for funerals, this was one of the most requested pieces of music. It made me happy knowing it was being used for ppl who loved the show as much as I did. And it's sad being here today because Peter Sallis has passed away. Rest in peace ❤
Perhaps a tricky question to answer, but did you ever use this particular version?? And if so, do you know the name of the orchestra and/or the album it's on, as I'm desperately trying to find it for my friend's dad's funeral next week (see post above). xx
I watched this as a child of about 10. Now I’m older it’s so nostalgic and this theme tune epitomises summer, innocence and happiness.
Every time I hear this song, you will be right next to me at 10:00pm watching our favorite show. I miss you mom. Rest in peace.
Just so relaxing nothing happens just 3 old chaps in beautiful scenery having a laugh and not a super car in sight.
Have you watched detectorists? It’s also has 2 chaps surrounded by beautiful scenery where not a lot happens. And the only “super car” is a triumph tr7.
Wow. The theme song of Sunday evenings, perfect! Loved growing up in Britain! 🇬🇧
For my Dad xxxxx 10/10/21 Love you Dad RIP 🙏
This was played at my grandads funeral yesterday such a loving and peaceful song he loved this series so much can't say it was my cup of tea but never mind love you grandad R.I.P you will be missed and in my heart forever ❤️❤️
RIP to the great Peter Sallis. Memories of innocent, happy times, in a England long since gone. Great childhood memories of this show.
It's an odd feeling. I'm 20 and American but themes and shows like this always appealed to me. I've missed England ever since I came back and sometimes I just like to lie down and listen to this, closing my eyes and imagining a nice life in an English suburb with a nice wife and good kids. Sometimes it's the simple things in life we have to work hard for but so worth it
The simple things these days are the most difficult to achieve, unfortunatley.
Hey im American and im 13 and ive been watching this since i was like 4
CloakingGalaxy I’ll trade u houses
I live in the USA and believe feelings like this are universal, meaning real joy is found in the simple ways of life! Certainly my life as a young boy/man was much fuller and happier, which is when I had much less. Funny, it can take a life's journey to discover that all you really ever needed or wanted was right in front of our eyes. I still watch these shows today to bring me back to those days, and I'm young again, even for just a moment!!!! Thanks Mon and Dad, I now understand what you were always telling me!!!
@@whattinsthekan8395 how were you introduced to these?
Reminds me of my dad watching in the 80s and 90s. I miss him.
Lol I’m 14 and everytime I hear this I cry! I love this show so much it’s reminds me of my great grandad who past 1 year ago and abit! Miss him loadsss
Jay Leno no need mate
It's wonderful that you cry! Tears are healing. Our heartstrings are our salvation. May yours always sing.
I'm 32 and just cried listening to it as it reminds me of my dad who passed 4 years ago
Sunday nights - this and the theme tune to the antiques roadshow - a reminder of freaking school in the morning !
I have loved this theme since childhood. This was probably my dad's favourite show. And now... CoVid kept us apart through 2020... and he Ceased to Be, not of Covid, but home, alone, far away, just like that. Now he remains a true classic for evermore. And. This theme is running on a loop in my hindmind and just makes me unbearably sad and unaccountably high-spirited. Uplifting.
*Keep in touch with your loved ones. Don't take things for granted, Some you may never see again*
Peter Sallis - an absolute legend, both here and as Wallace. He will be much missed by countless people. Rest In Peace Sir. 96 is a fantastic innings! I grew up with your Voice and will never forget it.
I love this show. We just watched Compo's funeral again. So very sad but a wonderful episode. RIP Bill Owen.♥
This is being played at my grandads funeral on friday 8th jan to go in to. I think it's perfect.
This was played at my grandma's funeral (in 2014). Both she and my cousin used to watch it together.
Same here ❤
Was played at my grandad’s funeral in 2013
Born in the 90's and this is one of my favourite TV shows some of the older shows on TV were the best not like some of the modern rubbish we have these days
This theme makes me cry everytime I hear it. I love this show and will watch it forever!
bigdad1211 I so agree!!! I frequently watch this dear, dear show. like visiting good, sweet, old friends. Restful and refreshing. Best wishes to you from Ginny in San Diego.
Thanks Ginny!
bigdad1211 I love this show, it's one of my favourites, especially with Bill Owen, Kathy Staff and Brian Wilde.
I wish they would put the complete series on Netflix or Hulu.
bigdad1211 I wish that they would release the first 21 series in a big boxset, The Bill Owen Boxset would be a great idea for it's name.
Best series I've ever watched. Thanks for sharing. A shame most of them are gone now.
I'm 68 now and this is still one of my best, the day Compo passed away I felt real sad. I loved them all. till this day I watch all there reruns, hope they keep them on the TV till I'm gone.
Burt Kwouk July 18, 1930 - May 24, 2016 ...
Burt Kwouk, who was best known for playing Inspector Clouseau's manservant Cato in the Pink Panther films, has died aged 85. He appeared in seven Pink Panther films opposite Peter Sellers as Clouseau's servant who regularly attacked his employer to keep him alert. He also starred in BBC sitcom Last of the Summer Wine from 2002 to 2010. He joined long-running sitcom Last of the Summer Wine as electrician Entwistle - a part that was written with him in mind.
I also enjoyed a series called Tenko. He was a commander of a women's prisoner of war camp during WWII!
Hi 'Stage Film Television', I'm not sure if you're still checking your 'messages' but I've just posted an urgent query re: this specific version of LOTSW... do you know which orchestra recorded this and when?? I'm absolutely desperate to access this for my best friend's dad's funeral and we can't find it!! 😢
A reminder of just how many good talents found a place in that long-running piece of comedy brilliance.
Loved this show and this tune here in New Zealand way back.
This programme has taken us (over a certain age) from childhood to our own 'summer wine' years.....wow
Last of the summer wine. Cleggy outlived them all. Makes me sad when people I grew up with pass on. You suddenly realise you are getting old! My dad had a white woollen hat similar to Compo, he was working in the garden once with his trousers tucked inside his wellies. The only thing missing was the rope holding his trousers up!
Am I the only one who reads to this? It seems calming to me.
Your not alone. I also do and yes it is a very pleasant song. Almost makes me cry.
This beautiful theme reminds me of Sundays spent at home with my family as a child. On Sundays' we'd go to church, come home watch Songs of Praise later, Antiques Roadshow, and this show too. My Dad died in April just gone and now I feel an incredible nostalgia hearing this theme ...cant help thinking what is the point of life ....when we all die in the end.
Sorry for your loss. This theme also takes me back to better times and I would go back there and never leave. The reality is we have to make the best of what we are faced with at the time. Both my parents died over 20 years ago and I find myself using You Tube as a time machine to revisit places that I remember growing up as a child. Holidays and TV programs we would sit and watch together. Life goes on as they say, and you will look back and laugh again, probably at something you remember your dad saying. Take care, keep safe, God bless.
@@miketravis6149 Just now seeing your comment as I revisited this theme again.. Thank you for your kind words and sharing a bit of your story. Hope to find the meaning of life, or find something good in amongst the yearning for my childhood.🙏 Wish you the best.
BBC ... stands for, Brilliant British Comedy
Must have watched it hundreds of times and still laugh out loud 😃
Used to watch this with my grandparents late at night ♥️ God the memories 😔
Weekend tv of the 70’s and 80’s where the best
Used to watch this with my parents every Sunday and this theme just broke me
BEAUTFUL AND MAGICAL WITH THE BEST LOVED CHARACTERS THAT SHALL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND CHERISHED! THANK YOU ROY CLARK AND RONNIE HAZELHURST! THIS SHOW NEVER GROW OLD!
Reminds me of the good old days AHH the memories
My eyes fill with tears and my heart pains on listening to the theme music. So many memories all of which are related to one of the best or the best series ever to be broadcast on TV.
For years, my grandfather and I would watch this series every single week night that it aired on PBS NPT. It was just part of our quality time together. My grandfather passed away in July of 2020. Hearing this will always bring comfort and tears.
This music brings the same level of emotion to me as some classical pieces such as morning suite in peer gynt by Grieg, and anything by Satie.
In the 70s it was on the TV on Thursday night, still watch the re runs of this programme sadly most of them now gone
Makes me happy all these years later ❤
I love this program. It is one of my all time favorites.
As a Retiree I can't say enough how great it would be to Hang Out with these guys if it were possible, I love them all.
England Glorious England
Magical countryside
those days gone by
Sundays
Peaceful
The countryside hasn’t changed
A little sit com that has brought so much pleasure to so many people the world over, and is still running 5 days a week on sky so the series has really never stopped.
What a show and such amazing cast of actors and actress 👏
This will FOREVER remind me of my Grandparents. We'll sit down and watch it together. To sit there and listen to my Grandfather laugh as if it's the first time he's seen it even though he's watched every single episode is Priceless to me. I can't watch it without having a massive smile on my face.
GUTENTAG!
Sleep Tight Peter, sleep tight.
God bless them all, they were all magnificent, Ronnie Hazlehurst too.
Its sad to think that the generation that watched these sort of shows are all dying and it will be forgotten about in 30years time
Reminds me of the great Bootlegger. A hero that everyone loved. Please come back my favourite sporting hero.
Was played at my dads funeral tears flowed he loved this program rip dad

I love this theme and consider it along with the program itself to be my favorite. It just makes a person feel good. I've lost track of the times I've been out in public and have someone comment on the tune I was humming. They always smile and that is a good feeling.
I can not help but smile as I watch and listen. Brings a tear to my eye - great memories of wonderful actors and actresses. Thank You so much for the post.
I think of my grandparents and the many laughs we had watching this wonderful programme. I was instantly reduced to tears at hearing this again for the first time in years.
Me too man I used to watch this with my grandparents my granddaddy died in 2018 and LOVED this show.... my grandma is being buried this Friday 🥺🥺💔
This tune was played at my dad's funeral. His favourite show so was fitting because it was his favourite TV show
I miss these so much 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I started watching this show after I buried my wife and 2 of our 3 kids in 2001. This and Waiting for God came on late nights on our local PBS channel. Couldn't sleep, depressed as fuck, barely able to function due to my own injuries............ Thanks for saving my life. seriously, thanks. And I want that picture with all the characters in it at the end. That's frickin' cool.
The author is surely something of a genius in his writing, with an almost inexhaustible creative imagination
that also embraced "Open All Hours" and that series featuring Mrs Bucket -pronounced "Bouquet". His
creations have been brilliantly served by the casts of performers, the productions and the music. This
particular theme is instantly recognisable and charming for a variety of reasons.
Watching in 2020. Bought tears to my eyes and the hairs on my arms stood up from all the memories of watching this programme :-( Rip to all the Actor/Actress's that have passed on Your Memories Live On.
This Wonderful Music was a big part of the Show.
+frank curry You're absolutely right!!
+Ginny Lorenz Thanks for the reply Ginny - It"s always nice to get one. This music makes me Happy and Sad at the same time.. Very British lol.
agreed frank,Beautifull music sadly the show is a part of britian which I think is long gone.
Sadly yes - maybe. But there are lots of little villages with their Compos and Cleggs I bet. And to think this theme music was nearly rejected by the producers. Northernspotter 101 - Thanks for your reply.
Thank you, Ronnie, for creating this music. RIP. 🙏
Really ENJOYED Gordon Wharmby's character!❤❤❤
Is anyone else drinking wine to this music?
found this amazing show during the pandemic, and the thing that made me fall in love with this show was the fact that all the characters came from different walks of life, but ended up becoming on big family
Fabulous lyrics and music
So many great memories from my childhood rip to the cast sad they almost all gone
This Sublime theme takes me to a trip to unknown corners of my mind ! So bravo creator of series, all the cast, and composer of theme, CHAPEAU!
I still watch this every evening, it's pure delight, love it.
We love you Alan Geoffrey Peel. 6/2/1960 - 6/10/2023.
God this song makes me cry 😭
Beautiful piece of music. Very sophisticated. Nice job 👍🏻
Good time watching this ❤❤❤❤
Beautifully & majestically done ..
I’ve never seen this show, nor have I heard of it (probably because I’m from the US)
But I used this song to play over a memorial segment for my friend who was from the UK, last month they took their own life after their cancer was getting the best of them.
I miss them so much, and this song makes me think that this was the song that played as she made her way to heaven.
Rest In Peace Kilo, Descanse en Paz Kilo…

A hilarious show the whole family could watch and be entertained. Pure gold.
My nan and grandad would record 2 episodes shown in the afternoon and watch them on a night everyday day before I can remember
