  • In this video, we will be building a 7ft, 16 plait nylon bullwhip with an African Blackwood handle and a nickel silver ferule at the transition. I'll be showing in detail, the process of turning the handle on the lathe from a square blank, to a polished whip handle. We'll be shaping the handle in such a way that it will allow us to install a 21mm ferrule to the transition of the handle. This creates a beautiful contrast between the metal and polished wood. Please make sure to watch my current nylon buwhip making method in addition to this video, as all of the whip braiding methods are covered in full detail there. Sit back, relax and enjoy the video, my friends!

I finished making my first ever whip about a week before you posted this video... Lol!
It's a 6', 24 plait (whipmaker's cord) with a Bocote handle and brass fittings. Just need to wax it.
I'd love to get your thoughts or suggestions on it.
    Love your videos btw!

Getting a sleve caught in a lathe is one of my worst nightmares. We did a test back in my apprenticeship where we stuck a sleve over a 2x4 and got it caught in a drill press, the wood just got wrapped around the chuck of the drill. From that day on i only wore short sleeved clothes when working with rotating machines

Next time you use heat shrink, just pinch the end with needle nose pliers while it hot. It'll seal off better.

Michelangelo: He birthed modern figure drawing via 'building the figure form up as if 3d while drawing upon 2d surface' - truly revolutionary. If you observe any great artist (with few exceptions); you'll tend to see they drop detail as they age, catching 'the essence' being more valued than being precisely matching to realism ~ especially since 'time is shorter, it takes less strokes to get the message through years of skills built ~ and most importantly: 'there is no point in doing what has already been done... if you want to see something realistic: look all around you - not for the artist to convey what nature/god has already'. If you want a reproduction: hire a marxist & prepare to defend yourself from their resentful attacks. -(If you have money to hire them: you have obviously procured it through oppression.) *bad joke, but not really joking... if you poke your head up (show above average skill/attainment/capability) - you'll be the first to have it cut. So be it. Live free or die.
Keep striving. Many of us appreciate seeing one that cares to 'do work worth looking back at and being proud of'... like the biblical bit about 'working through the week but taking a rest somewhere in there - not so little work you are ashamed and not so much you are run-down, and when you're resting: you can either enjoy your time knowing you did a good job, or you can feel like shit because you half-assed it'. -Pretty sure that's verbatim.

Hey Nick how are you? You mention that the strand drop off points and the techniques here can be found in you last video. My current nylon Bullwhip making method 2020. Your drop off point are based on a 7"x1/4" threaded rod. How do you compensate the drop off points when using a shorter rod?

Sanding for the higher grits is great using the lathe, but unless you have an adjustable speed regulator, once you are above 400 grit, take it off the spindle and go with the grain, to make the smoothest finish. For wood, anything over 1200 cannot be felt by the human hand, and will not make any difference to the finish before you put on the second coat of wax, or linseed oil and wax. I would suggest beeswax and BLO, (boiled linseed oil) and just apply it to your handle with your cloth barely moistened with the oil.

This is my 8th whip build. And i just finished plaiting the best thong I have done so far. To my eyes it's almost flawless. Now I'm just praying that my ferule and handle all fit together like i hope. Fingers crossed, I'll find out in the morning 😆

dude, you need to invest in a oneway chuck or at least in a cheap chuck that grips the piece for drilling. Bonus, it will hold your work for the entire process.

You need a 4 jaw chuck to hold the handle in the lathe. That way all you have to do is move the tale stock back and forth, without have to take the handle on and off of the lathe.

As usual a just super pleasing video to watch.
Good to see some more of you content, I love it! Keep it comming.
    I wish i had a lathe too.
Or some of your turning skills.
The handle turned out beatiful. Also the wood is just amazing. Its very though (and expensive) to get those exoitic woods here.
Also getting those ferrules seems to be impossible where I live, unfortunatly.
Anyway. Nice work Nick, keep it up, looking forward for more of your content.
Take care, stay healthy, keep on plaiting.
    Summer is about to come!

Dear Nick. Saw your tutorials years ago, but only in the last 3 weeks do i actually follow them in action...
I started with your older vids to minimize my frustrations compared to your newer and more advanced tutorials. Today Im making my third whip following your guidens, and this is deffently gonna be a new hobby of mine. Just wanted you to know that even your oldest videos are great for a beginner like me, and I injoy you channel alot. You seam to be a humble and down to earth person, and that makes it even better to watch your tutorials... In short: Thank you!

I really like how you deeply explain what you are doing in your videos, though I still kinda feel certain urge to ask, how to begin, what should I know and learn/get to start practicing and/or making my first whip? Thanks a lot for answer, really love the level of craftsmanship put in your work and the demos at the end of your videos are just flawless.
