An absolutely indispensable fly on the creeks and rivers of Michigan and the Driftless regions. Drop one of Yvon Chouinard's Pheasant Tail & Partridge wet flies off the end and you are going to be in business. Plus, the Hippie Stomper is a joy to tie, and once you've gotten proficient you'll be a much better fly tier.
My favorite small stream summer fly! Thanks for sharing! Excellent design btw! Love everything about this fly. The way it floats, the visibility, the way it catches fish! Super fun to tie as well
Your flies are great! Do you think you could do a video of your User Friendly? I love that fly as well...floats great, highly visible and easy to see. Keep up the great work developing flies. Thanks!
I’ve had good luck with a medium tan with a royal flashabou body. When you do royal flashabou patterns do you tie in both the red and green together and overlap them or tie off the green and tie in the red middle?
Hi Mike, there's a couple different ways to create that royal style body. You could individually tie in/tie off each segment or you could do it a little more complicated, but cleaner, and start with both tied in, kind of like you mention.
Hi Andrew I’m unsure why you would cut the hackle underneath…have you tried fishing it with the hackle? If you left the hackle wouldn’t the fly have more floatability?
Hi there. I am pretty new to this game and appreciate your videos. Do you fish this all year long, or are there certain bugs you are trying to imitate with this fly? How do you decide what color to fish and when? Thx.
Hi Geo, The Hippie Stomper is a "general attractor," which means it incorporates some fishy components and doesn't specifically imitate anything. On that note, I fish my confidence colors which are purple, red, lime, or orange
@@andrewgrillosflyfishingfly1517 Looks like a beautiful area, have not been there, maybe next time. I stay in Coyhaique and fish the surrounding rivers.

What sizes and colors do you like for the driftless? About to visit some family in the Iowa portion.
Thanks!
I like that fly a lot..see a few dozen in different colors in my fly box...thanks for showing the Hippie Stomper👍
You bet Stephen! The hippie stomper is my most well-known creation, i'm glad you like it.

At last, the Hippie Stomper tied by THE Master himself! 👍👍👍
Hey thanks Allie One!
Great content. Superb instructions. Thumbs up!!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks Mike!
This will be a perfect fly for largemouths in my local creeks.
It gets em. i've had success catching small largemouths in some warmwater ponds here in SW MT

Hi Ryan, it’s an older technique that helps a fly ride right side up
Killer fly. Do you try to match the flashabou color to the color of the bottom layer of foam?
Yep, that's the idea! Feel free to mix and match as you see fit though.

What size and color fir green river in Utah
will 2mm foam make this fly too bulky?
If that's all you've got, I'd suggest just one layer of 2mm foam for the fly in sizes 14 and under. Size 12 and up could be two layers 2mm foam.
where in Southern Chile did you guide?
Near La Junta, Rios Roselott, Figueroa, Pico, Claro, & some lakes in the area...

What foam do you use? I can’t find blue 1mm foam anywhere…
your local flyshop could order you some from wapsi
How’s chances on doing a user friendly tutorial?
Hey CJ! I'll try to get one done over the weekend!
What do you think this imitates?
Hi mark, it's a "general attractor" which is a very common fly design style based on generally imitating something buggy that a fish may eat
Killer pattern, one thing I’ve noticed is it doesn’t float as well as I would hope, a little dry shake works wonders tho
hi Issac, executing the mend and the drift work wonders as does a little floatant
