What's really sad is that during the complete lack of movement on the Western Front, from about 1915 to 1918, something like 4 million people were killed, with like two or three times more wounded.

If Germany didn't panic when the Russians crossed the border at the beginning of the war they would've taken far more land. Not necessarily Paris but a considerably higher amount of land than they did in our timeline.

Moritz von Schwarz Thanks. Went to Wien last year and it was wonderful. Tsardom( kingdom) of Bulgaria was one of the most prosperous countries in that time but sadly after we were occupied in 1944 by the soviets we lost our pace and become a lazy and poor country. We never reunited with Macedonia and the rest of our lands and sadly probably never will because of the soviet propaganda. You, Hungary and Germany were always our friends.

This was the last war of the glorious old-world armies. After this so many innovations took place that modern style warfare was born.
Germany's performance was superb. They were almost one step away from complete victory, if they defeated France, and had better allies. To think that just 3-4 nations held off the 75% of the world for so long and nearly managed to defeat them, while keeping order at home, deserves an applause.

+Justin Vincenti There's more to winning a war than taking over a lot of land. The central powers were running low on food and raw materials (Germany and Austria-Hungary), lacking industrial capacity (Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire), and plagued with internal issues posed by different minority groups (All three, more prominent in Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire).

    • @theresbeenamixup

+Justin Vincenti What FluffPa said. Also the allies made gains towards the end that look small on the map but were highly significant -look at France and Italy towards the end, and the speed with which the fronts are moving. The Central Powers could have kept fighting, but it would just have meant more deaths and probably less favourable peace terms.

Small nitpick. The Treaty of Bucharest was the treaty to end Romania’s participation in the Great War. The Region known as Dobruja would be split in two by the Central Powers. The southern parts would be annexed by Bulgaria, the Northern parts would become a joint-occupation zone for all four central powers in order to supply their nations with food and oil to continue the war due to the British blockade on Germany.
Bulgaria, would beg the other Central Powers to let them annex the rest of Dobruja. 5 days before they capitulated to the Triple Entente, they got their wish and got the rest of Dobruja, though again, they’d only own it for like 5 days before their capitulation. And the region would be handed back to Romania in the Treaty of Versailles.
Sorry for nitpicking small details, but I’m just a huge history nerd and can’t help it sometimes.

Most gained areas in the east after 1917 only played a minor role in support of the central powers. Ukraine wasn't much of a help to Germany; they were a minor client state.
In september 1918, the Greeks and Brits broke through the Macedonian defense line, forcing Bulgaria to surrender. The Ottoman Empire was near collapse after the Brits and Arabs conquered all areas in the south.
Austria-Hungary was near collapse as well, and with the millitary basically completely destroyed, and Greek and Italian forces closing in from both sides, they did not have much of a choice but to surrender as well.
With the other 3 centrals gone, The Allies breaking through the western front and advancing into Belgium, and military being starved and near revolution, Germany had to surrender as well.
Also remember that the allies controled the entire Meditteranean Sea and the Central Powers had difficulty getting supplies.

This war wasn't about taking land, it was all about attrition. The central powers supplies had been completely drained out, Lawrence of Arabia had captured Baghdad and severed ottoman supply lines, and Germany had to surrender. I actually wrote an essay for my history exam on why Germany had to surrender and the basic jist is: The United States had entered the war, a fresh completely new army with fresh supplies, the was a massive hit to German morale and a boost to the allies, Germany's allies had surrendered leaving them all alone, British naval blockade had drained German supplies and last of all Germany was being pushed back onto their own territory.

I'm bulgarian and I can stay that bulgaria entered the war with one thing in mind - to unify all bulgarians in one country - at that time South Serbia, Macedonia and Northern Greece were considered bulgarian lands by our people and indeed they were inhabited mostly by bulgarians. We enterd this war becasue we couldn\t achieve bulgarian unification in the previous Balkan Wars where Greece, Serbia, Romania united against us with just one aim - to take bulgarian lands. We entered WW1 to regain those lands back and Germany promised that if victourious they will be ours for good. Notice that Bulgaria took just the territories that we considered ours and we didn't want to go beyond that.

    • @ZORO12ful

      Stefan Kartchev
      Oh don't get me started...
If we wanted to "steal your lands" we would've took much more since we arrived in Sofia. Bulgarians were becoming too greedy and agressive, this is why Romania intervened to tip the balance. It was more a demonstration of force, no real fighting took place, more troops died of cholera than from battle.
Romania was not happy to see the balance of power in Balkans to be upset by Bulgaria, especially because Bulgaria was a potential ally either for Russia, either for Austro-Germans, both threats to Romania's security. With a Bulgarian superstate, Romania was to be crushed betweeen Bulgars to the South and Russians to the east or Austro-Germans to the North and West. Also the apetite for lands of Bulgarians was worrisome as the next target for an expansionistic Bulgaria would have been Dobrogea , a territory long time claimed by Bulgarians as being theirs ( as your profile picture suggests ).

    • @st.kar.7586
      @st.kar.7586 8 років тому +6

That Regular Romanian You tried to bring balance on the Balkans and you did the exact opposite. After we lost the war(because of you) 1,1 million bulgarians were left outside Bulgaria and 500 000 got killed, Turkey conquered more european land, WW1 lasted two more years, instead of beeing ended in 1916 and in 1940 you lost Moldova and all of that, just because you've tried to bring "balance". And yes, since 681 Dobruja was always ours untill Russia gave it to you in 1878. The border between Bulgaria and Romania/Vlachia was always the Danube river and what we see today in Dobruja is a pornography, but whatever I don't really care now.

Honestly, this is one of THE best videos on youtube in my opinion. The music is epic, the movements are almost completely accurate, and the dates are also accurate.
My only problem with this video is that you didn't show any of the Red, White, ethnic minority, or Czechoslovak armies fighting in the former Russian Empire after the Revolution, (nor did you show Kalmykia trying to become independent) but that's a minor point.
But was the Western Front really that still? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Verdun and Somme should've caused at least a few temporary noticeable changes. Also, didn't Austria-Hungary launch a full-scale invasion of Serbia in the first few months of the war (they were driven back quickly, but they actually got deep into Serbia; almost to the Greek border).
But overall, this is a great video. My favorite parts were when the music turned all sinister when Bulgaria entered the war and Serbia was torn apart; Bulgaria is always overlooked when people discuss World War I since they always focus on the Western Front and only give a bit of attention to the East and only think about the Ottomans when they look at the Balkans and Middle East. That part made the Bulgarians look badass.
I also love the ending parts when the music turned all sad after the Central Powers started to annex land from/establish vassal states in the territory they won in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and the Treaty of Bucharest. This was especially fitting when the Ottoman Empire started occupying Armenia and the CPR was occupied by Germany. I also liked how the music started turning heroic/epic and Persia was reoccupied by the allies just as the Ottoman Turks finished occupying Armenia and how Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire were forced into Armistice immediately afterwards.

If you look at a map of Russia in the 16th century, you see a country stretching from the Baltic to the Urals. If you look at a map in 1914, you see an empire stretching from Warsaw to the Pacific Ocean.
