My great-grandfather fought for Austria-Hungary. His father had left Russia for Austria, so he spoke fluent Russian. After being captured by a squad of Russians while on night duty, he was brought to a Russian PoW camp. The warden didn't know German, and was trying to tell a group of Germans to give their names to him. After about a day, he decided to speak up, telling the warden he knew Russian and German, and could help him if he was put in better quarters. The warden agreed. For most of the war, he was translating orders for the warden to new prisoners. At one point he even convinced the warden to let the Germans have Christmas free from work. When the Bolsheviks took power, a small force was sent to the prison, and told the Germans in Russian, "you are no longer at war with Russia. All prisoners must leave immediately". My great-grandfather and about 150 other German and Austrian prisoners had to walk their way through the Russian civil war and back to their homes.
My grand grand father was defending his homeland Serbia from austrian invaders...and I still use his trophy, german lantern now adapted in electric lamp ....rip all of them
Europe always has 1 big power+ Britain over looking all. Since Napoleon time, France was the big bad- and rest were weaker but collectively stronger than France. Britain was strong enough to resist but not strong enough to defeat. Then Germany was the big bad- rest were weaker but collectively stronger than Germany. Britain was strong enough to resist but not strong enough to defeat. Now Russia is the big bad- rest are weaker but collectively stronger than Russia. Britain is strong enough to resist but not strong enough to defeat.
Yeah, this is the problem with mapping this war. While it looks very nice, it doesn't accurately represent the military situation. For example: Germany's army tried one last offensive in 1918 and although it got some land, it was completely exhausted. The French, British and the Americans were thoroughly trashing them until the German generals got the idea and gave up.
Shanks Not really. The German Spring Offensive failed, after that, the war could only go down the drain for the Central Powers. The American troops had a significant contribution in shortening the war, but by August 1918 the German army was completely exhausted and its population in a state of starvation. The longer the war would go, the higher the chances of the Spartacist uprising being successful and Germany forced out of the conflict.
+Olaf Mikli It wasn't just that. The map does not accurately represent the German situation at the time. First, the German allies were knocked out of the war. While they weren't the best, their theatres kept numerous Entente forces occupied. Second, the German government was on the verge of collapse. The economy was down the gutter since it never correctly adopted a war economy. The people were starving because of the RN blocade. The Communists were gaining traction. The main reason why the Spartacist revolt was quelled was because of the influx of battle hardened soldiers following the German surrender. Third, while Germany did technically own Ukraine and large swathes of land in the east, it couldn't administer them properly. *The people didn't want the Germans there*. Over 1 000 000 troops were needed in the east after the Russian surrender in order to keep the new territories pacified. Fourth, the German army was exhausted. The spring offensive was its last dying breath. The reason it failed was because it couldn't sustain to supply its quickly advancing soldiers. The Entente started pushing back, the American army entered Europe and it was game over. The Entente could've easily pushed deep into Germany, but by that time it too was exhausted from such a brutal war and it took the German offer for peace. The UK and France could have never known that the Germans would be so angry that they would believe any conspiracy theory a madman would shove down their throats.
Because of tranches. That was too many soldiers killed, from the two sides. I know it, because I am French and I have my history lesson just in front of me. But it wasn't undramatic at all.
Julio974 Gaming that title was said from the generals' point of view, to reflect how they were detached from the conditions endured by their soldiers. The look at a map, no enemy attack today ? All quiet ! Meanwhile let's hope Luigi doesn't screw up again at the Isonzo... While in fact hundreds or thousands died this day.
They were important ports and the Allies were afraid that should the Bolsheviks gain control of these territories, they might win the civil war, which they did anyway
Yes, after the whites won the Finnish Civil War, Finland was supposed to have a German king called Prince Frederick Charles of Hesse as the head of our "new monarchy". Central Powers lost so this never happened so we decided to have presidents instead.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart No Germany was not the best during WW2 they got themselves into a two front war with the west and the East, that is their fault. It also doesn’t help that Germany made everyone hate them in WW2. In WW1 Germany had bad allies.
Well actually no. Romania did a secret message with Russia, which means that the message was, that if Hungary loses, than Romania got parts. Russia did everything.
Mac Lazer I don't remember the name of the german commander, but he didn't want tos surrender ! He had only 300 german soldiers, with some thousands of colonial soldiers, and fight with that until the 18th November 1918 against UK and Belgium
No, the war had been planning earlier among the powerful countries in Europe. they just found a casus belli to begin a war. The assassination came in handy for them.
It's even more mind boggling to think how many young men died fighting in the western front now when you can visually see the almost non-existent movement of front lines during the entire four years.
Gideon Mour If it didn't start in Balkans, it would start in Luxemburg or Poland or wherever. Austro-Hungary wanted some land, and looked for an excuse to start a war in Balkans. Germany,on other hand, wanted some colonies. The war was already there,it was a question when it will begin, not where. Killing of Franc Ferdinand was only initial spark.
+King Shoeless Yep thats the problem with ally pacts. The biggest starter of this war. One country had to go and declare war on a country and in response that country had allies who declared war on another and it kept going.
It just started with austria-hungary vs. Serbia And then.... Most of the countries around the world: Can we join? Switzerland: *eats popcorn* I can't wait for the sequel in 1939.
Matt Mcgavin Well one of the problems that made Hitler so bold to invade/annex other nations, like Czech and Poland was that there were not really allied military pacts against him...had UK, France and Soviets all came to agreement that Nazi Germany was big threat and allied together from the start, Molotov-Ribbentrop pact would have never been born and if they had taken Poland and Czech, among other smaller European nations in that pact along with them Hitler might have thought twice before invading on any direction,
The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany had a Non-agression Pact at the start of WWII. The Soviets didn't join the Allies until 1941, when they got invaded by Nazi Germany.

Big A Seal hahaha i will only be grateful to France cause Britain did the most slavery in the world. And wow are they good at wars just sitting on their pathetic Island and proclaiming they are helping while in WW1 and 2 it was the US and the USSR defeating Germany. The reason why I like Feance is because of Napoleon, the first king who did something against slavery.
The Modificator No no no no. Let's fix that. The Brits provided tons of help in WWII. Kicking the Italians and Germans out of North Africa (With some American help), Deciphering the German code. Creating Radar, and preparing/following through with the invasion of Normandy. Plus they sent supplies via lend lease to the Soviet Union, and basically removed German air superiority via the Battle of Britain. Britain was a HUGE contribution.
B Zirm It actually interests me a lot, because there is no “good guy” or “bad guy”, unlike what many think about WW2. In WW1, I feel that everyone is much more unique than in WW2.
When you watch the end of this video you can catch a slight grip of the humiliation Germany felt at the end of WWI and how the "knife at the back of the nation" myth got so popular. When you look at the territorial gains, it looks likes Germany is winning, it made Russia surrender, took big chunks of its territory, yeah the Brits defeated the Ottomans, took them long enough, but on the Western front Germany was still inside France when they surrendered. How often do you hear of that in a war- you catch the enemy's territory, couldn't be moved for years, and you surrender your territory instead. What the generals knew and the public didn't was that there is no way Germany could sustain the war for much longer, especially not when the fresh US army has joined and Germany's allies surrendered. They wanted to avoid what later happened at the end of WWII- allied forces in Berlin, the annihilation of Germany. Lloyd George, if I'm not mistaken, wanted to keep the fighting, said that the Germans would never believe they have lost if they wouldn't see the allied armies marching in Berlin with their own eyes. History would prove him right. France have lost the most out of the allied forces, wanted to cut their loses early and punish Germany severely. Another reason for WWII.
@@leonpaelinck it was tried in 1916 with American president as the mediator. My great grandfather was an Italian Alpine class 1898, he fought since 1916, he risked so many times to be killed; and on October 1917 at Caporetto he was wounded at the head with a mortar splinter, he passed out and when he woke up he was in a Austr-Ungarian hospital camp, he was a prisoner until the end of the war. Then he was released. He did so many things in ww2 as well
@UA-cam User That's what English propaganda of ww2 wants you to believe. Just because due to our generals we didn't achieve victories during the second world war, it doesn't mean our soldiers weren't brave. As a proof of that, you can see what our soldiers did to the English army at Alamein, resisting without weapons and food for days; indeed we were given the military tributes for our bravery. If you don't trust me read what Hemingway said about Italians soldiers in his books, and you are going to find out we were everything but cowards
@UA-cam User WW1 is when they were brave, being thrown to the Alps in human waves by that stupid commander having worst guns and with the basically impossible task of taken fortified positions in the Alps against an army with better position and guns with longer range

My second great-grandparent was a warrior in ww1 fighting for the Kingdom of Serbia. When the serbs escaped through albania, he himself escaped to but not only that, he was one of the 4 men that carried King Peter 1st on the road. Once the allies cleared everything up, the king offered my 2nd great-grandfather a large piece of land, which we sold and are a wealthy familly now because of that.
Damn. My great grandfather was a soldier in the ottoman army and fought at the fronts in Russia or in Iraq. First he made food or such stuff, and then he fought with swords with the brits or the Russians. Sometimes he played dead, just to survive. The foreign enemies would stick to him and go on. He catches them there😂🤗 He got scares in his head
Imagine Serbia just handing over the murderers and no ww1 or ww2 would have happened... I get it though, AH-empire didn't have clean hands regarding the balkan area.
Territorial changes happened all the time on the Western Front, but they were measured in Meters and payed dearly in blood. Imagine fighting over the same set of trenches several times a day.
The germans were quickly retreating since mid august. Considering how much ground they lost the last 2 weeks before 9/11, they way far from winning, clearly the opposite. It’s either Will germany reinforce and stall or its arming is collapsing.
It's amazing how much different the beginning of the war was from the ending. In 1914 and early 1915, old fashioned cavalry-on-cavalry and infantry-on-infantry battles were still the norm, even with trench warfare settling in. But after that, other than the odd cavalry charge or infantry charge "over the top", it had become dominated by trench warfare as technology favored defense over offense. It wasn't until airplane and tank technology improved that there were any breakthroughs. Cavalry still had a few limited advantages over tanks and airplanes, which is why it continued to be used to an extent all through the war, even in the early days of WWII, but by summer of 1915, the days of marching into battle alongside a band loudly announcing your presence were done for.
Your comment only applies to the Western Front, WW1 was immediately followed by the Polish-Soviet War in which the last great cavalry battles of history were fought.
Serbia was beating Austria Hungary until Bulgaria joined, central powers really had to invade a country both sides with a backstab just to barley conquer a tiny nation
Austria-Hungary had to fight on 3 fronts, but without allies (1 vs 1), Serbia would have lost. They had only about 400K troops while Austria had over millions. It's just that Russia and Italy stopped us, so we could send very few troops to attack Serbia, and they had very good chances to defend themselves until Bulgaria came.
Serbia lost 22% of their population The French lost 4% Romania lost 10% And the ottomans killed 17% of their own population. Could you imagine a war like this happening today
It’s a shame that the Gallipoli landings are so hard to see here. They were really defining in both Australia and New Zealand’s history. At the time they were both young nations that sent many men off to war, many of which died in the trenches and beaches of Gallipoli, it’s still something that defines both nations, and ANZAC day is widely respected in both countries. This would have also been significant for the Turkish people too, to have your homeland invaded by a foreign force that you were told to fear would have been a nightmare for the people, let’s not forget the many young Turks that died at Gallipoli too, they fought just as valiantly as the ANZAC forces.
@@wewonesverdes101 Well it is utter ignorance to look at the Gallipoli front from your point of view. Those events changed the world for good. And I am not just talking about the Anzacs or the Turks. Gallipoli front had opened to bring aid to the Russian Empire. It was going to be a quick death for Ottoman Empire and after the surrender the British were going to gain the control over the Bosphorus. And that meant they were going to be able to bring help to Russian Empire. Russians were suffering a very hard famine and that was one of the main reasons why the October Revolution happened. The defeat of the Entente both caused the fall of the Russian Empire and the war to prolong.
MooMoo Chicken That's actually the exact opposite. People have the misconception that it was mostly stagnant but there were a ton of offensives, counter offensives, strategic maneuvers, retreats, espionage, etc etc. Very active yet people think what you're thinking.
MooMoo Chicken, actually, the western front didn't move a lot in 3 years, but the battle there were the worst France have ever experience. For example, the battle of Verdun killed around 150000 soldiers in Each camp but the frontine was almost the same at the end...
Excellent video as usual. And I'm glad you've decided to insert the "Bollettino della Vittoria" at the end of the video. Many people are completely unaware that without the Italian victory of Vittorio Veneto and the complete destruction of the Austrian Army in the battle Germany could have continued the fight for several months ahead.

Amazing to see how little the fronts changed in WWI. The weaponry, including machine guns and automatic rifles, had far outpaced the Napoleonic tactics still in use, so both side lost massive amounts of men gaining only a hundred yards or so of ground.

From what can be seen, the central powers were on the verge of victory in 1918. Then comes the collapse of the offensive on the western front, but the decisive event is the sudden breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front, which leads to the capitulation of Bulgaria which leads to the capitulation of Austria-Hungary and Germany remains alone
***** Excellent vid. You should in my opinion also do besides this "pure" version another version where you stop the vid for a few seconds and show a pinpoint on the map with a picture and a text explaining what is going on there. For example: a battle marker on a certain area in the middle east with a picture of lawrence of arabia and a text: beginning of the campaign of lawrance blabla.. It would basically be like a history lesson, but better.. :)
Ah, WW1, the war which destroyed the optimism of Europe, the idea of absolute rule, and balance of power in Europe, which from 1918 on saw a vacuum in Central/Eastern Europe, allowing for the extremists in the stronger countries on the fringe of this vacuum (Russia and Germany) to take advantage. I can't help but imagine what the world would be like if the war had ended by Christmas. For starters, no matter which side that one, the peace would've been less harsh. Much less damage and human loss would occur, and ultimately there would've been no "stab in the back" as Hitler called it if Germany lost. Germany's armies would've been thoroughly crushed by the end of the "five month war". It's very likely many monarchies would survive the war, most notably the Russian monarchy. Also a survivor, the Ottoman Empire, which would've had no chance to join so quick a war, historically joining in late October, which at that point would see the Central Powers on the run (in the scenario I'm describing). The Turks wouldn't join so disastrous a conflict. Italy wouldn't have felt betrayed, the Treaty of London was signed in 1915. The real question would be the status of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The Austrians would probably have seen some instability, perhaps the empire would've collapsed anyway. The Germans would probably liberalized their nation, adopting a British model, or something similar. Overall, there would be less revanchism in the peace conference, France regaining Alsace-Lorraine, Belgium gaining the Eupen region, Russia gaining parts of Prussia and Galicia, Serbia gaining minor concessions or even Bosnia. The reparations would be few, and payable, and disillusionment would've been limited to few. Be interesting to see what you would make of a scenario, EmperorTigerstar *wink wink*. And then there's the Central Power victory, for those of you still reading. A similar scenario would've happened overall. Minor land concessions on the behalf of the allies, with Luxembourg, and Belgium and France up to at most the Meuse being annexed. In Russia, Poland would be annexed, or granted independence, depending on how the Germans handled the situation. In the south, Serbia would be puppetted, and the southern half annexed into a friendly Bulgaria, regardless of their intervention. Italy would've been revisited, and certain punishments would be placed on their disloyal ally. The Ottomans would've annexed parts of the Caucasus, all of Kuwait, and the Sinai, or even all of Egypt. The domestic repercussions would be felt hardest in Russia, the Czar's position even weaker. However, the communists wouldn't rise, as there would be no political or military need to send Lenin to Russia. Russia's fate would depend on German intervention, which if it occurred would preserve the absolute monarchy. Otherwise, a constitutional monarchy or even a republic would form based off of western lines. In France, the shock of a second defeat to Germany might result in the rise of extremist groups, such as Fascists or Communists. In Britain, it is unlikely such a thing would occur. Britain would've lost less of consequence, and at most the colonies would be unstable (mostly India). And that's my analysis of the alternatives of an early victory. If there are any other theories based off of this, feel free to suggest them, or even debate what I put, and why. Thanks for reading my wall of text.
WW2 as we know it wouldn't happen. There would be no Anti-Semitic Fuhrer in Germany, no "stab in the back" the public morale wouldn't have been nearly as broken as in 1918. There would be no massive democratic revolution, no mutinies. One side would've been thoroughly beaten, not lost because their citizens protested so. If Russia entered Berlin, Wilhelm would have given up, same if Germany entered Paris. If anything WW2 would be caused in a similar way to the first world war, or maybe even like the Franco-Prussian War.

Most of the war, it actually seemed that central powers would win. At least, on a map.
Yeah, this is the problem with mapping this war. While it looks very nice, it doesn't accurately represent the military situation.
For example: Germany's army tried one last offensive in 1918 and although it got some land, it was completely exhausted. The French, British and the Americans were thoroughly trashing them until the German generals got the idea and gave up.
the americans saved France and Britain
Shanks
Not really.
It is kind of bizarre to me that they lose one offensive and then unconditionally surrender instead of have fair terms.
+Olaf Mikli
It wasn't just that.
Russia: Sorry guys gtg.

Switzerland: *eats popcorn*

Well one of the problems that made Hitler so bold to invade/annex other nations, like Czech and Poland was that there were not really allied military pacts against him...had UK, France and Soviets all came to agreement that Nazi Germany was big threat and allied together from the start, Molotov-Ribbentrop pact would have never been born and if they had taken Poland and Czech, among other smaller European nations in that pact along with them Hitler might have thought twice before invading on any direction,
The Soviet Union and Nazi Germany had a Non-agression Pact at the start of WWII. The Soviets didn't join the Allies until 1941, when they got invaded by Nazi Germany.

They should have never attempted the spring offensive but try to end the fighting diplomatically
@@leonpaelinck it was tried in 1916 with American president as the mediator. The German Emperor was happy to accept peace with nothing changed in 1916 with the American president pleading the entente Britain and France to accept them aswell.

WW1 was both the last War of the Imperial Era and first War of the modern Era

?..
Pretty Irrelevant in the grand scheme of things honestly
@@wewonesverdes101 Well it is utter ignorance to look at the Gallipoli front from your point of view. Those events changed the world for good. And I am not just talking about the Anzacs or the Turks. Gallipoli front had opened to bring aid to the Russian Empire. It was going to be a quick death for Ottoman Empire and after the surrender the British were going to gain the control over the Bosphorus. And that meant they were going to be able to bring help to Russian Empire. Russians were suffering a very hard famine and that was one of the main reasons why the October Revolution happened.
And the likely point of divergence in the Entente victory would be Tannenburg, and the divergence in a Central Power victory would be the Marne.
And didn't matter who won ww1 ww2 would still happened
WW2 as we know it wouldn't happen. There would be no Anti-Semitic Fuhrer in Germany, no "stab in the back" the public morale wouldn't have been nearly as broken as in 1918. There would be no massive democratic revolution, no mutinies. One side would've been thoroughly beaten, not lost because their citizens protested so. If Russia entered Berlin, Wilhelm would have given up, same if Germany entered Paris. If anything WW2 would be caused in a similar way to the first world war, or maybe even like the Franco-Prussian War.
I was talking about like if the war end in 1918
