  • The Scales of Justice is a unique shield which was added as a labyrinth-exclusive reward in Path of Exile 3.14 Ultimatum. This shield requires the user to stack both life and mana to be able to benefit from its unique modifiers, including gaining a chunk of added fire damage and being unaffected by both ignite and shock. Can The Scales of Justice enable some interesting niche mechanics to make a build around?

    Important note with regards to 'Unaffected by' - the magnitude of an ailment on you(the displayed shock effect percentage indicator for example) is representative of its effect on you, not the actual magnitude that the ailment carries. This is why ABCkid's Lightning Conduit Raider build is able to proliferate a large shock to nearby enemies even though the self shock has a magnitude of 0%. In the case of Galvanic Field, the self-shock is the cause of the field which is why it's scaled based on the shock's effect on you

    Self shock enjoyer here, I've played both self shock Galvanic Field and self shock Lightning Conduit before.
    Scales of Justice is actually the best method for self galvanic field, using a weapon swap setup. There's a lot of moving parts but I'll try to explain it here:
    * You need chance to be shocked, from self curse conductivity and replica reckless defiance.
    * You need to hit yourself with lightning damage after pressing galvanic field (Storm Secret is more clunky, since to start the storm you need to shock an enemy which consumes the galvanic field).
    * To hit ourself, we use Heartbound Loop and a weapon with the Spectral Spirits essence mod, and some phys taken as lightning on helm.
    * When we weapon swap, the spectral spirits die triggering HBL and damages us with some lightning damage and puts the galvanic field on us.
    * Our weapon swap is to Voltaxic Rift, which gives a +40% to maximum shock effect which is huge for damage and AoE. Galvanic Field snapshots this damage and radius, so we can immediately weapon swap back to the main hand setup.
    * We use Scales on our main setup, making us unaffected by shock. When we weapon swap to Voltaxic we lose the unaffected by shock, allowing us to be self shocked to the maximum.
    * To get to maximum self shock we use a permanent uptime Vessel of Vinktar enchanted with "used when shocked". Vinktar provides a base 50% shock on us that can be scaled by both shock effect and flask effect.
    * To keep the life and mana within 500, we go low life which also opens up Pain Attunement. We need to run Traitor anyway as we need permanent Vinktars, so we can also have permanent Coruscating Elixir.
    So basically the button rotation goes like cast GF, weapon swap twice, and repeat every 10s or so, and everything else is automated.
    There are other ideas I've tested for self shock, but Scales of Justice seems to be the smoothest and lowest opportunity cost by far.

      I’ve also made a build before, the way i was doing it was by having elevated crusader mod I think on boots which is also unaffected by shock. Now, if you socket a high dex req gem into the boots and lose that dex somewhere you will unequip the boots and the unaffected by shock won’t apply. I was using voltaxic rift on main hand with a quiver that has enough dex to unequip the boots whenever I weapon swapped. Otherwise the setup was similar, sustaining vessel of vinktar, heartbound loop, phys taken as lightning etc. I had spectral spirits on the weaponswap and interestingly, any increased duration effects from gems that are socketed with galvanic field in the weapon swap actually snapshot and carry over even when you swap back. I think I had like 12s duration for low investment.

      @@vasilislang6421 yeah I remember seeing some people were running this setup back in crucible(?) league, it’s a really good setup as it frees up your shield slot. The same boot swap tech was used by pre patch Ralakesh discharge and can also be used to cleanse the debuffs from beacon of madness, as all its debuffs get removed when you weapon swap and lose the stat requirements for it. And yeah there are some really wonky interactions with duration skills and weapon swaps, depending on the location of where the gems are socketed, some things snapshot as long as the same gem is in the same position on both weapon swaps

    There was a brief moment in my hybrid elementalist setup where Scales of Justice was a decently strong item, but it was inevitably outscaled by the archmage setup i was pivoting into (which further went hierophant when it became evident elementalist was hard-capped on defensive capabilities.
    It truly suffers from the fact that especially now with some life-based scaling opportunities out there, you'll get far more from doing one or the other across an entire build than the meagre benefits this grants from carefully balancing both.

      Yeah this is pretty much the issue with this unique - going all-in on mana or life scaling is more beneficial for the most part because there's a lot of support in the game for either, but barely any for both at the same time.

    9:44 This feels like its niche is precisely that: boosting flat damage on instances where only global damage takes place. Mention of Herald of Thunder's storm, I suspect there are quite a few others.

    I think that taking a look at certain forgotten shaper and elder uniques like Hopeshredder and Voidfletcher would be interesting, however:
    One Forgotten Unique in general that really sticks out to me is actually the Tecrod's Gaze Murderous Eye Jewel, which I personally find to be slept on. The others range from Highly Sought After (Amanamu's), Solidly Great (Kurgal's), to Meme (Ulaman's), but Tecrod's just seems to have been thoroughly lost in the shuffle. This is especially odd since even if you only take advantage of one half of its modifiers by not going dual-wielding and instead going with either main hand or shield based attack skills, you still net some pretty absurd numbers for your troubles. 200% increased critical strike chance on your one hander, two hander, your bow, or even unarmed attacks, or +100% critical strike multiplier on Shield Throw and the like both seem like they would be worth considering on a critical strike based attack build.

    Also worth mentioning you can get an elevated mod on rare boots for unaffected by (ignite, chill or freeze).

    Another cool synergy is with shroud of the lightless, increasing both mana and life and Elepen. works well since the idea with shroud il already to stack as many +life+mana abyss jewels. Could even be better with a good Adorned where you could have half your jewels grand Life+suffix and the other half mana+suffix giving more life and mana than rares with both stats

      Great synergy there!
      A quick reminder to anyone else inspired by this: The Adorned will only apply to magic jewels socketed in your passive tree, so abyss jewels in your armour are better off rare.

    Archmage support is 1-20 added damage per 100. Making it approx thrice as good, without the life constraint. Thats why this shield is obsolete.

    being unaffected by ignite/shock and then reliably reflecting those ailments back on you also opens up using the Protection Mastery that states you can only have one of each of those ailment types (damaging/non-damaging) on you, to full effect, essentially giving you bleed/poison/chill/freeze/scorch/sap/brittle immunity.

    The thing with unique items is they used to be like keystones but for items, always have upsides but with considerable downsides so you had to make a choice. They seem to have changed that with the new uniques.

      I think it often depends a lot on how powerful the unique's special modifier is as to whether it has a downside or not, and how impactful that downside is. But I agree, some of the very powerful recent uniques have lacked a downside specifically on the item itself(however, the downside in a lot of those cases is obscured because it prevents you from using another item in that slot - a good example of that is defiance of destiny, a very powerful amulet but now you're not gaining any gem levels/damage etc. from that slot)

    Great content! Keem em coming! A unique I am exploring now is Warrior Legacy with Smite of Divine Judgment. Its interesting combo since the repeated attack hits screen wide for a tiny movement. I just need to figure out self knockback haha

      @samdeval yeap if you scale aoe etc each hit secondary effect can shotgun. I think my record is 6 hits so far. The rare in a pack dies instantly since its 12-13hits most of the time. I tested with self poison

    I had a build that I played for 3.0 that was a tri-leech strength stacker ascendant. Short version was that it used Brutus' Lead Sprinkler for damage, Soul Tether and Shaper's Touch for the Mana and Energy Shield. I then stacked the hell out of strength and tried to get a high effective HP pool by having MoM so monsters would have to not only take down my life that was constantly full due to the slayer overleech node, but they had to get through my mana and ES that was constantly leeching too. Having my strength giving me life, mana, and ES was very nice.
    I was excited for this shield when it was announced, but the damage provided by it was not as much as I had hoped in PoB. The damage required for a decent build now vs how much was needed in 3.0 is a very different story, so I don't know if I'll ever get around to that build again. 😆

      That's a great item, and one I want to cover at some point in this series. Obviously the body armour slot is incredibly valuable, but it's still a very interesting item with lots of stuff going on

    Haven't watched it yet, but I've tried to use this twice recently and both times wasn't sure if it was worth continuing. I guess I'll have a pretty good idea after this video if I'm in the right direction or not :)
    EDIT: Well, self shock + GF of Intensity was an idea I've been playing with a lot, and the shield has been in a lot of those ideas. Looks like I'll be back to the drawing board on that one.

    I think the shield could have much bigger range for life and mana, something like 0 to 200, to allow using the item itself to manage your mana/life values and also giving the chance of hitting big

      Honestly the numbers on the added damage could be higher as well. Something like 5-11 or 6-12 per 100 would make it much more worthwhile to build around while still being fair imo.

    I have been trying to make a lightning conduit self shock build this league but couldn't find a way to self shock. Malachai's loop works but you then need to find a way to get to max power charges and I couldn't find one that was smooth and didnt require me to use another skill than lightning conduit. How would you go about self shock for a shock aura lightning conduit build now that Ralakesh impatience no longer give you max power charges?

      Some things to consider: a source of self-hit with rotblood promise and conductivity, or replica reckless defence. Some sources of lightning damage self hit with these include: storm secret + HoT, heartbound loop + phys taken as lightning.
      Alternatively, Vessel of Vinktar (with The Traitor for 100% uptime)

    Guardian ascendancy has a lot of life and mana recovery scaling with auras, and close to avatar of fire on the tree. This could work with your build idea from Ultimatum league.

    Would the flat added dmg also Benefit the skill you would get from the Essence of Hysteria? And if so since Fire burst has a already high flat dmg hit, would it be of any use?

    How does scales of justice work with blood magic which makes u have no mana? Does that makes it to only life?
    Or is blood magic just makes your mana to 0?

      It sets your mana to 0, so the added dmg etc. scales from the 0 mana

    I Think manastorm would be a worthy item for this. Been toying around with various different ways of making it viable: cast on crit makes the lost mana negligeble if you have some sort of mana Leeds, ignite elementalist seems to be a really easy Way of making the mana load not huer tour build and finally the last thing Ive been looking at is indigon + battlemages cry attack builds, seems like you Can get a lot of damage out of that for a lot of 1 c items (and an indigon ofc)

    From its release 10 leagues ago only saw 1 video on an attempt to build around SoJ. Current poe1 design and build creation always encourages scaling a single stat, which is getting kind of stale. Also "build making" should be separated from self challenges like "SSF" imo. Thanks for the viz and looking forward to the next one.

      Yeah it does have potential for
      Strength stacking trauma phys builds.
      Back in the Trials of the Ancestors league aer0 made a video about Heavy Strike Jugg build with mentioned staff.

      Pillar of the Caged God goes back a long way. It used to actually be a popular item to build around. Nowadays there's just better options. It wasn't nerfed so you can still do it, but it's just been left behind as many more options have been added to the game. You can still find old build guides for it, and even some more recent ones. It's not a hidden gem so much as just an old one.

    @4:30 i am fairly sure it was patched sometime between 3.18 to 3.22 for mob shock effect to be multiplicative with char shock effect i.e. if u have 60% +40% reduced that will be 100%reduced i.e u take 0 shock now if a mob has 100% inc effect that will still be 0 since after that patch inc effect is multiplied with ur effect.

      @@popoga8029 Shocked ground wouldn't prove anything - to test this you would require having exactly 100% reduced effect of shock, and then be shocked by an enemy with some amount of increased shock effect(easiest option is probably expedition remnant). If the shock you receive is anything other than 0%, it's additive as I mentioned in the video.

      That's a good question and something I'd need to test to be 100% sure, but I'd say I'm fairly certain it won't grant double the added damage
      EDIT: Tested, it does not grant double damage when life and mana are equal

      @@dreamcore_gg fairly certain of the opposite, and last time i tried to make a wander from that shield ( to no avail sadly ) it did double the damage with equal values, i believe it works just like perseverance
      sadly, i have no data to prove my claim at the moment, but if it does work, it's most certainly the only way to make it competitive for damage in shield slot
      also, with general added fire damage, got me wondering about a herald of thunder/galvanic field where you crest of desire for herald of thunder and a six link galvanic field

    If Vessel of Vinktar's shock on you counts as you doing the shock then:
    Maligaro's Restraight > Vinktar > Scales of Justice
    Then lightning conduit via something like Mjolnir; though with self-ignite you might be able to get enough attack speed to do CoC stacking life/mana would scale decently with Templar.
    idk low-effort comment. needs googling.

    the main problem with that shield is that it give nice effect but is to weak. Like think about it mana/life stackers is not in good place the best use of this would be on hierophant or guardian but still investing into max life most items give good mana and not life bonues. Ivory tower armor sound good but to play energy shield low life we should play aegis aurora so we cant play our stacking life sghield. And even if we mange to create life mana build it's still much weaker and less tanky than normal life full mana reserve builds. As i said shield is ok but the number need to be better also there is not much good life/mana items that allow us to play around it. I still thisnk this is just bad mana stacking build you lose some mana so archmage dmg will be less and we got fire dmg from shield like we are even but we are playing shield and worst archmage instead of just go for normal archmage build with mom. I cant see this build even on paper.

    So "Unaffected" is basically multiplicative "100% less effect"?

      Yes, 100% less effect of X on you would be more or less representative of that modifier. The 'on you' part is important, since the ailment still carries its full magnitude, the less effectiveness only applies to you.

      I've found a way to scale the HoT dmg with inc. dmg that's readily available.
