  • Dave received a request to make a video on how to project boulder problems more efficiently and confidently. He pulled from some old research he had done including tips from Eric Horst and Dan Mirsky. Following this strategy should help you make it to the top of your next project.

    Greetings again from Belfast, UK
haha, "humble your ego!" Someone get me some cold water! I definitely feel a bit devious not starting from the beginning of a climb. It's probably a patience thing as well 😀.But this method makes so much sense. I'll be putting it into practice in the gym tomorrow. Thanks so much for the great video. Really practical, and clearly explained as always.

I'm paraphrasing here, but the great Wolfgang Gullich is famous for saying something along the lines of "the mind is the most important muscle." Anyway, thanks for the great idea. I'm personally struggling on a steeper sport climb outside right now. I figured out the individual moves fairly easily, but my boulderer's endurance made it impossible to link them all on the first day. Doing the research for this video was good for me too, because it gave me some renewed confidence that I could eventually finish the climb with a better strategy.

I tried this strategy with preparing for a karate exam last week and it worked. There were ten techniques plus some variations to perform for the exam and I was having trouble perfecting the moves and memorising them. After watching Dave's video I decided to try using this approach on my karate studies and see if it would make a difference in learning and performing the techniques. I started with technique no. 10 and memorised it and polished its performance level then I went to technique no. 9 and did the same thing with it. Following that I went back up to technique no. 10 and performed it. I did this for all 10 techniques and then for my final run through I performed all ten techniques from no.1 - no. 10. This technique worked well for me and I passed the exam. Thanks, Dave!

There is a term for this called "low pointing". It's especially effective when you are falling at the same high point over and over.

That's a great name for the strategy. Thanks for sharing Todd 👍

I project like that most of the time. It doesn't really help if the crux is the first move though ;)
But even then, it helps getting the rest done for when I finally start sticking that first or second move.

Hi David, love the videos. I'm having trouble with the last 1/3 of some climbs due to fear of missing the last few moves and having an uncontrolled fall. How would you best prepare for this, or practice for it? Should I be climbing lower than I am and trying to force some uncontrolled falls to stick the landing / land safely, then give it a shot?

Great question Shaun! I was already thinking about a follow up video that deals with this exact issue. I'll try and make it soon. Thanks for the idea 😁
