Very good video about something I'd never heard of before.

Now I'm curious how that works with editing and formatting in the master document and carrying over into the subdocuments when saving.

Nice, I always wanted to know whether word could do this after working a few times with Overleaf. This seems like a game changer when working in project groups with large reports

It's really too bad this doesn't actually work! I have to remove files from OneDrive and either dump them on a company server that not everyone has access to or onto my Desktop but that's the same problem, not everyone gets to access to my desktop. I got it to have one file insert from OneDrive. THEN after I moved everything and tried to save it, I got this cyclical error about having to save the documents as 1 format, which they already were, and it never let me actually save the document. I really need this functionality because I work with 200+ page documents regularly. I'm glad InDesign kinda works better for this right now. I'm super frustrated.

What if the subdocument file is deleted by accident, and when you print the master, will be missing the subdocument on the master,? or if there is additional way to save the master document in a different way to make permanent the subdocuments in case the problem above happens, specially if there is no backup of the subdocuments files.

I work with aviation manuals which are biblical in size and there are many. I have a 400 page manual, with 12 sections (think chapters) and 10 Annexures. I tried breaking the old document down into separate files, all in same folder. The documents have Headers, a font imported, Styles numbering and the result is diabolical. Any ideas

My query is that when you unlink a sub document by clicking unlink to master doc., then how it gets copied to master doc. Pls reply.

Do you remember the binder feature in Word before 2013. The binder put many files together, page #s etc, then sadly Word abolished it. I used the binder for huge project putting a lot job classification documents together for HR dept. So, my question is does the master documents feature replace the binder feature? The master document feature already existed before even binder existed.

Now that you mention it, this is reminiscent of that feature. Makes me wonder of how the two differ.

I thought that this video made the subject clear, but I am having trouble implementing my new knowledge. I can't insert a created document into the master document. I tried using my prepared docs with no luck. I even used the documents that I got from this video after requesting them.
I used the prepared master, and tried inserting the chapter documents. Not one would go in. What am I missing? This looks like it should be very straightforward. I did unzip the data documents, and put them into a new folder on my desktop so that the master and subdocuments were all in the same place. If you could help, I would be very grateful.

I am having the same issue.. Did you have any luck figuring it out?

@@Ali-vi4hy No, in fact I called MS help desk since my software was purchased for this. Twice they elevated the ticket to a certain level, then closed it with no resolution. Attempts to ask about it was met with silence. I gave up, and just started breaking up my work into the same folder but by chapter. Not what I was expecting at all. Good luck!

I have used the master document/subdocument feature before, but I had forgotten how. That's why I looked at this.
I couldn't understand why you say it wouldn't work, since it's so simple, until I just tried and document wasn't inserted without a message or warning.
My intuition, as an IT person for decades, told me: Could it not find the document? is there a file permissions problem? Permissions, could it be because Office/Word sometimes gets confused and looks for and links to files in OneDrive instead of the local file and that causes some problem?
Well, I tested inserting a document from my D: drive which is not mirrored on OneDrive and it worked without hesitation. Placing the subdocument on the Desktop which I also hace it NOT mirrored on OneDrive.
Are your files being saved in OneDrive? If they are, you can test by linking a Word doc that is not under My Documents but on some other folder not mirrored to OneDrive.
If it works you could, as a workaround, move your subdocuments to a folder somewhere, not mirrored to OneDrive and insert them to your document. Remember to back them up periodically, since OneDrive will not do it for you.
If it doesn't, well, we keep looking for answers.

Some update to my comment below. The Note and the Adobe Acrobat PRO might convert the master long documents in portfolio, split, etc to replace the abolished Binder microsoft. The problem with Adobe is too expensive $19 per month? not so feasible. adobe gave free trial only barely for 5 days before make official the expensive subscription. It's not even for 1 month the trial. It's all about money and greed.
