What a review that was. This basically put words to everything I've been feeling about this album, which is also the reason I've only listened to it once despite being a huge Nightwish-fan. Such detail in your descriptions. Great stuff.
Last few minutes of that track (stuff after last "we were here" lyric) is for the end celebrations for live shows I think and works brilliantly but as it own last few minutes aren't really needed
I just discovered this album a few days ago, so I apologize for responding to a 5 year old comment, but I actually don’t think The Greatest Show on Earth is too long. It is a very long song but, at least to my ears, I think it’s perfectly paced. It doesn’t drag in any section in my eyes.
I think you hit the mark with a lot of people. As a huge fan of nightwish and Floor Jansen the album is just not quite what we expected. And fun fact. Epica, nightwish, after forever, and within temptation are metal bands with various forms of mostly sopranos and mostly operatic trained singers Evanescence is a rock band with a non classically trained mezzo soprano.
The only one who finished her trainnin' was tarja. The rest didnt and Amy Lee is trainned as a proffesional pianist with a different style of singing...
Salvador Rios Delmas Tarja took further training. And that is entirely off point of what I said. And that only has Tarja a little more trained in opera. Does not make her the best overall singer or mean that they are not other aspects and vocal styles. And Simone though a Mezzo has actually taken further training too. Amy Lee as far as I know was never really vocally trained. Maybe some coaching. But yes plays piano, guitar, and the harp. But also sings very pretty and has a good emotive voice perfect technique or not. And Sharon is entirely self taught
This was the first review I have seen by you, and I honestly didn't expect it to be this well-spoken and thought out. I agree on pretty much everything you said. I do like the album, but I miss the more personal/emotional feel of their previous albums. Anyway, I could go on for paragraphs. Instead, I will just say, great job on the review, and rock on. lml
I actually agree with all the things you said, this album is good, especially instrumental parts, but it doesn't grab me emotionally as two previous albums did
You say Weak Fantasy is the worst song? I strongly disagree, I find it to be the best on the album, audibly...just behind Shudder Before the Beautiful. Perhaps you're putting more value on the lyrics than I am.
Thanks for this review. I'm Nightwish fan for about 7 years, Frankly speaking I was never bitching about Anette, I liked her really much from the beginning and after Dark Passion Play I realized that (in contrast to the other symponic metal bands) Nightwish phenomenon is connected with the fact that the essence of the band is not the female vocalist but the whole crew. After Tarja's solo albums I knew that for sure. Floor Jansen is awesome indeed, I was thrilled with After Forever as well. Nevertheless, 'fans' who said that Floor permormed Imaginaerum better than Anette and the upcoming album will be amazing cause she sings better than Anette does make me fucking laugh. As far as I'm concerned I have mixed feelings about this alboum. Some songs are good (Shudder, Weak Fantasy, Yours is an empty hope) and some songs/parts are so lousy that I have an impression they ran out of ideas(Elan, My Walden - 'higher, higher, higher' - ?). Generally - nothing spectacular. Lack of Marco Hietala and Floor's operatic vocals is the most disappointing.
I think you made a really good point on how low Jansens voice is mixed on this album. Its disappointing because it could be changed so easily and I think it would make a huge difference because her voice really is fantastic!
Interesting opinion, I do agree with you that it is an odd album, although there are things I love about it, I do think that they should have used Floor in different ways, her voice has a really big range but it was not shown and also I love Marko's voice and I missed him on this album. I don't like Troy's contribution that much, so I liked that they didn't use him in all the songs. It is a nice album, but I hope there is still a master piece to come.
That's a good point about Imaginaerum, being what it is, might be impossible for Tuomas to top. In fact, it seems like he's stepping back a bit, relaxing the rule that only he writes the lyrics for the first time in Nightwish history (Marco wrote "Yours is an Empty Hope"). Tuomas has always written himself, but maybe after Imaginaerum he feels like he has nothing left and is trying to write outside of himself which gave the album a little bit of a...I don't want to say plagiarized, but kind of that sort of feel. Like I don't mind that he's inspired by Dawkin's Greatest Show on Earth, but I feel that in other songs inspired by books he managed to make it more his own. I've found that on more listen-throughs I've come to appreciate the album more, and I wonder if what's holding is back is the overwhelmingly positive nature of it. As you said, there's nothing primal, nothing really gripping. I feel Nightwish has always been at its best when its wrestling with its demons, so this very at-peace Nightwish is an unengaging experience. I didn't want to be disappointed with this album. I was really excited about the subject material, something I've often wished there was more music addressing. I'm hoping it will grow on me (and frankly I love Shudder, Walden, and Alpenglow to pieces, so maybe more of the songs will work their way into my heart). Could happen, right? I mean Imaginaerum was too damn much to process for at least the first 20 listen-throughs, haha.
Naomi Craig quote "I feel Nightwish has always been at its best when its wrestling with its demons, so this very at-peace Nightwish is an unengaging experience." I totally agree with you.
I personally enjoyed this album a lot, but not as to the extent as the previous album Imaginaerum (my favorite album by NW). It also took the longest for me to like, but it does have good songs. We'll see what they'll do next! good job!
I like the review and agree on most. I think the theme is really well balanced actually and Tuomas managed to make a distant theme quite emotional (at least for me), especially in the last song. And yeah, it's really hard to top Imaginaerum. I'm glad someone else likes the Anette era as much as I do :)
Even though I can' get technical like you do, I'm on phase with what you say. I picked up this album on release and I was let down a little, especially after the earth-shatteringly good opus that was Imaginaerum. It's simply not memorable enough, in terms of melody, and mixing melody with bass line. Shudder is definitely great, Weak Fantasy has a fantastic opening, The Eyes is a very haunting track, but I found myself getting a little bored throughout the album, especially on tracks like Alpenglow.
Yes!!!! Finally someone who speaks about this album honestly!! I couldn't agree more, it was a little bit of a letdown after 'Dark Passion Play' and 'Imaginaerum'. Even though I love the theme of the album and I'm giving Floor a chance, it could have been mixed a lot better. Still an adequate album though
Yes, Beyond The Red Mirror is a fantastic album. One of Blind Guardian's strongest in a long time. Nightwish is one of my all time favorite bands in metal. I don't feel it is their strongest album because I Floor's vocals aren't as strong, but it is still a good listen. Edema Ruh is my favorite song on the album. Dude great review I am glad I found your channel. Are you a Dream Theater or Iced Earth fan? I feel you would love those two bands.
I agree with you on so many points! I'm a huge Nightwish fan but I'm very objective. This is a good album but it's not in their top 3 at least, they could've exploded all the potential from Floor's voice and that upsets me a little. I really enjoy this album because it's an homage to nature (and I love that), the orchestra sounds great and the entire album has some very heavy sounds, yet they could've done much better. P.S. You have a very sexy voice OhMyGoooosh! (With all due respect) and sorry for my english :B
The greatness of this album is in the lyrics. You talked about the change and how it could be bad, and it was perfect. They are in the level of Epica as far as Political Lyrics go.
Dude, nice review, I agree on most of the comments but could you please make an effort in pronunciation? I know it's difficult and it will never be perfect but at least trying a little would show some respect to the band members and the fellow Dutch/Finnish friends.
Just found your channel, I am subscribing. Even though I respect your opinion I disagree, Imaginaerum is a VERY hard album to top, But I would have given Endless forms a solid 8. I really really liked it. But I give imaginaerum an 11 out of ten, I love every second of it. Hopefully the next album is even better than Endless
I'm sorry but the 'attacks' on religion really do go with the theme of the album, what has hurt science and the ability to contemplate the world through the ages more than religion has? Even now you see these bigots trying to stop every single advance in fear of whatever version of hell their holy book will throw them in if they don't 'act', those two more... direct songs about religion really do get it spot on, incorporating elements from some of the greatest atheist debaters out there. "Behold the crown of a heavenly spy/Forged in blood of those who defy/Kiss the ring; Praise and sing/He loves you dwelling in fear and sin [...] Pick your author from a-la-carte fantasy/Forged in suffering and slavery" have got to be some of my favourite lyrics on the album, along with the chorus of EFMB and Alpenglow, and with the whole of The Greatest Show on Earth (The 'We were here's' are just... wow). Nightwish is not getting preachy (maybe teachy in a VERY slight way, which is not the same), they never say you should convert or whatever and/or why, it simply speaks the truth, religion has been and still is a huge part of human history, determining way too many things over our existence since the dawns of time.
***** religion has never stopped scientific advance the greatest of mankinds scientific achievements happened at times when belief was high in god now look scientists are more concerned in controlling peoples beliefs than discovering new forms of energy or travel etc
I am also pretty displeased to say that this album didn't turn out as good as expected - or as even the mainstream fans claim it is!! :( It may sound a bit exaggerated, but Nightwish is the one and only band I can entitle as "my most favorite band of *all times*!", and considering I am so deeply familiar with their songs and compositions from previous eras/albums (I am a pianist myself and love jamming their songs on the piano! :) ), I could easily discern the "lack of experimentation" on this album, which you're referring to in this video. Considering my subjective and partial relationship with Nightwish's music, I could say it definitely DIDN'T do the thing for me. 7 out of 10 seems even a bit high of a rate to me in that sense, but as for an objective critic's rate, it's the perfect rate!
When I bought this album and listened to it from start to finish, I was left breathless. I love it dearly, especially "Élan" (melody of my heart) and "The Greatest Show on Earth" (always fills me with awe and sometimes tears). The album felt like a story, kinda, with the final track being like a story within the story. I'm so excited to see them in concert in November!
This was my 2p! : There are many reviews here that say a lot of truths. In regards to vocals overall I think Floor did a great job. But there is some truth to her sounding a bit bored at times I guess. I also agree its a sin them not using Marco as much as they used to. I mean hes a great choice to back up to add extra depth. I can understand and do agree with the argument he would be boring if used all the time. But he is been underused, and using him to sing goofy style singing is plain stupid. Don't get why he seems to be used for that. My biggest worry was would Richard Dawkins spoil it for me. I don't particularly like him. Not because I don't agree with some of his views (Long story why.) Thankfully he wasn't preaching in his narration and he didn't say anything vicious or anything you could disagree with, he actually worked well (especiallu in The Greatest Show On Earth) and didn't sound like a dick! In regards to songs ive listened to the album a few times and I am gaining a few favourites, liking songs like Weak Fantasy, Endless Forms Most Beautiful and The Greatest Show On Earth. Which brings me to a song I wanted to review, The Greatest Show On Earth. In a way its like 3 or 4 songs stringed together. Without been too critical it does kind of give a good snapshot of the album overall. The song on its own isn't exactly something you'd say 24 mins of brilliance but as many have said different emotions. You listen and hear interesting riffs. But then sections were it sounds lazily linked up. But then amazing riffs that don't seem to go anywhere but still leave an effect!!! Its all worth a buy and listen defenately but it does leave you with mixed feelings. In a way I agree and disagree with comments been left on the overall album. The main comment is it could have done with more old style riffs going somewhere. I get the feeling why people think this but I don't think that was ever the idea. I think it was made to be like a snapshot of riffs and various emotions and in a way it does work and is interesting. But I think choosing this route has killed it as an album many old school nightwish fans would come back to!
To be honest, I lost track of the album and didnt know it had come out already. So im just listening now. So far Ive listened thru all of the songs once. And I must say, I dont care for the Title song of the album. I don't think it does any favors for Floors voice, and i think the whole idea of it is lost and most people listening wont get it. The song Elan is decent. But again not great to me. It's something I could listen to, but not something I will go back to thinking, damn that kicks ass. It's just decent. Yours Is An Empty Hope, is again decent but i think the growls under floors voice is needless and pandering, and the chorus is lack luster and not really catchy. Basically it sounds like a song from a musical where they are singing about a character in the play. Our Decades in the Sun, starts out absolutely beautifully and Floors voice is excellent throughout. My Walden sounds to me more like a traditional Nightwish song, actually it just sounds like a traditional song overall, very celtic sounding where the guitars and so called "metal" parts of the song are pretty much there as backup for that more traditional sound. A good song but nothing great. I wont go song for song ill stop here....but overall I feel like the album was trying to be something that just wasnt Nightwish. The meaning of the songs were convoluted, the songs were more complex then they needed to be which came off as just doing things for the sake of doing things rather than to make the songs better. Overall with Nightwish albums all the songs are usually decent but there will be 1-3 that really grab you and stand the test of time. I don't get that from this album. Here i was searching for one memorable song and I didnt find it. Is it a bad album, no, but its not great either. It's basically throw away for me. Sit down, take a listen...maybe 2...then throw it out. I don't see anything from this album ever being put on a best of album in the future. SIDE NOTE..... The whole idea of having the album based on science and seeing beauty in the world thru science I think is lost in translation, and for those who do get it and see it, I think it comes off as preachy. Having one song with that idea would be fine...a whole album...not so much. It's kind of like Metallica doing a christian album. lol
Weak fantasy is actually my favorite song off the album and the hardest hitting one. Elan was good choice for a first single but over all I think that song was one of weakest and least interesting songs on the album.
I respectfully disagree with your analysis: the more I listen to this album the more I love it. You are right, however, on Floor's voice being a little frustrated, but I have the impression Tuomas does not really want her to become the superstar of the Band, at least for the moment
Good review overall, but there are some points that I don't agree at all: - I know It's a matter of opinion, but I really don't think Dark Passion Play Is one of their top 3 albums. There are songs that seem to have been made with Tarja's volcas In mind and where Anette just didn't fit; - You praised the technicality of the drums, when they are not really that complex. It seems like Kai was holding back, so when Jukka returns he will be able to play the new songs, because Kai is a way better drummer (sorry Jukka). An oportunity lost; - The heavy riffs, aren't really that heavy either, and they sound too similar to other riffs from the past 3/4 albums (aswell as other parts).
This album quickly grew on me after 4-5 listens. The greatest show on earth is really good however still not as epic as Ghost Love Score. Imaginaerum was a disaster and by far their worst album it takes alot for me to absolutely hate something from Nightwish, so I wasn't really expecting much with this one. Turned out to be much better than anticipated. I did however find Floor's vocals to be abit drowned at times, but she still delivers a solid performance.
I didn't like Imaginaerium at all, in fact it's the only Nightwish album that I've sold - and I don't regret it. I liked Floor a lot in the live perfomances I watched on youtube (I already used to listen to Floor in After Forever and Revamp) and I had high expectations about her and NW together, but since I listened to Elan I knew that they would downpower her voice. And that's unfortunately what they did in this album. I don't understand why someone would hire Floor and not let her use her voice at the height of her power. It is constantly muddled with the instrument and rarely allowed to shine. I also felt many motives were repetitions of previous NW songs (Master Passion Greed seemed to function as infinite source.) Since I didn't like Imaginaerium I felt this was a little bit more pleasing, but I don't have many hopes for future Nightwish releases any longer.
Dude, you overanalyse things. Music is meant to be listened to, not analysed and cut to pieces. Imaginaerum vas an exceptional album, full of great tracks, but so is EFMB, especially Elan and The Greatest Show on Earth, which, by the way it IS the greatest show they ever created, the theme, the structure, the lyrics, the energy and the feels it transmits. However, it is safe to say that Tuomas played it safe in terms of using Floor's versatile and extraordinary voice, maybe they will really let loose on their next album.
Comparing heavy rock music like evanescence to metal... stopped there. Stop comparing bands based on the lead singer’s genitalia. Do you compare seether to Tarot? Of course not.
Good review. Also as a fan with all their albums, this is the first I won't be buying. I feel the song-writing on this album is rather pedestrian and is the first album to have not progressed or differed in some way. My opinion is that it is their worst, which is a shame given it is Floor's first album with them.
I don't even know why I bothered reading the comments on this video. Even after you so politely asked people to keep it civil. But whatever, haters gonna hate. Your review was pretty much accurate. I've been a fan of Nightwish for over a decade now, and I totally agree with you on every single point. It's a very good album, but not a great one, and I wasn't really expecting that it would topple Imaginaerum, but I'm confident a next one will. Floor is a very versatile vocalist and they'll find new ways to explore that trait. Of course, I'm no critic, but again, neither are these douchebags trying to shove their opinions down people's throats. Keep up the good work, you're reviews are awsome, not at all biased and I really was able to hear things that I wasn't capable of putting into words. (y)
Everyone has a different opinion about this album in general. I liked it but.... yeah just like you said, it's not quite bombastic and powerful as Imaginaerum, DPP.... :) Hope they'll make something better in the future. btw. you're super cute :))))) :P
Pretty much everything he says is purely opinion. Talk to a real sound engineer about the mixing issues on this record... you know, someone who knows what they're talking about.
Sean Quertinmont I disagree. Tarja had an amazing voice, but it limited Nightwish, Anette's more flexible range was a grand development and again, not pop.
Oh ya. I remember all the time Tarja and Anette blew the crowd, and the band, away. Odd there are no videos of it happening, but I'm just sure they did .... didn't they?
"Talk...Talk...Talk" ;-) ...well it's always matter of taste!I listened the album few times from beginning to end and it sounds better and better. This is also the band's wish to listen the album. There are hundreds of tracks in the songs but it's mixed well (I have a studio and I know something about mixing). You need good speakers or headphones to hear the whole musical info from the songs. It's normal that we don't like the whole album and we use to choose our own favorites.Of course I have my favorite songs from the previous NW albums but musically this new album is the best NW album so far to me.The band make the music how they want and not how we wish.We can only like or not like the result and that's it.I hope that everyone can find something interesting from the new album and enjoy the music!
Man you talk so much an say so little. Half a new band, what's there to expect ? Expect a new direction i''d say. All is said with that. Don't need to blabber on that for 14 min 35 sec's ...sjeesh.
Tara Russell That interview was made only a couple of days before her solo album came out so she wanted more publicity by saying something like that. And do you seriously think that the band would fire her because she was pregnant? Also if they really wanted to fire her, why do it during a tour? It's a lot easier to do it after the tour. So who's being naive here?
@Tara, Anette eventually had an interview where she admits that she was fired because she refused to have Floor Jansen as a temporary replacement while she went on her maternity leave. Anette said she was afraid that the fans would prefer Floor. Anette also admitted that she wanted the rest of the Tour cancelled or delayed instead of having Floor step in. The band couldn't do that, especially with so many other people relying on them to deliver, so they made the decision to fire her.
Tara Russell Here is a link to one of the articles where she talks about not wanting Floor to do her maternity leave: carlbegai.com/2014/02/02/anette-olzon-careful-what-you-wish-for/ Anette confuses being fired because she refused a good solid solution (Floor) to the problem she created (inability to complete tour, thus leaving the band in a bad situation) as being fired being of the pregnancy. Anette didn't seem to realise that the South American leg was too risky for her and her unborn. The heat in the stadiums, her frequent illness, the overly-passionate crowds of fans and heavy pregnant condition was a dangerous combination. The boys were right to say no, we're not risking that. She also said that she would try to do as many South American concerts as she could and have the rest (and the Australian leg) cancelled, which is the "uncertainty" Troy mentioned. By then, Floor may not be available to step in if she wasn't secured earlier. Remember the band also had the promoters, their management, their crews and the fans to think about. Postponing was impossible because the boys were committed to other projects and Anette had enough trouble touring let alone adding a new born infant to that. Anette said she declined being in the Showtime Storytime DVD because she was afraid she would be shown in a bad light but NW said she would have had a chance to watch it first and approve it. Even Tarja and her husband signed off on the DVD Anette mentioned. There are more articles but I don't have the time to hunt them all down. If you are interested and have the time, here is a link to the official forum that followed this topic. There should be links scattered through the pages to many other interviews as well as Anette's activity in the media (including the Floor-Haters incident, instagram war and the Shine review (that Anette reposted and said "made her day") that insulted Floor and Tarja. Be prepared because the subsequent fan discussions are mostly unflattering for Anette. www.nightwishforum.com/index.php?/topic/3362-nightwish-anette-media/ Just to let you know, I was a big Anette supporter. I was ready to follow her into her solo career but her behaviour in the media post-breakup has soured my opinion. I wish her no ill but I am reasonable enough to see everything she claimed in a more rational perspective, including the money issue. I know the boys aren't perfect and have made bad decisions regarding Tarja's dismissal but their silence this time round is a whole lot more professional than Anette's bitter tirade in the media. PS. Yours Is an Empty Hope is not about Anette as Anette thinks. instagram.com/p/0m-WinLEfs/ It's about internet trolls who hide behind the anonymity of the internet (the smoke reference) and bash the band. If you want to know more about Anette's recent activities: www.nightwishforum.com/index.php?/topic/3305-anette-olzon/page-42?hl=%20anette%20%20olzon%20%20music
Don't get me wrong, I love Anette's contributions to the band. I like all three singers. As for the forums, I included the link so that you can go through all the pages and sift out the links to most of Anette's interviews and not so much for the discussions. The Carl Begai interview is only one of more interviews where she talks about not accepting Floor as her maternity-leave replacement. If she and the band organised maternity-leave, then it wasn't her pregnancy that caused her to be fired. It's the problems caused by Anette refusing any stand-ins for any shows she couldn't do and wanting them to be cancelled instead. Sharon is in a different situation to Anette. Sharon and her husband own and manage their band while Anette is not a co-owner. As for the hospital incident, I do recall somewhere that Anette had a management member check-up on her in hospital but failed to mention him. His name is given in one of the forum posts with a link to his instagram or twitter post but I didn't go further into that claim to establish its authenticity. I do love Floor in Nightwish but I think Anette has a prettier and warmer "flavour" to her voice. Imaginaerum is one of my top albums ever. But I look at the bigger picture and see that Floor is more suited to the band. Voice aside, Floor copes better with the touring and has better stage presence and better consistency when it comes to live performances. Answering your question earlier, Tarja has a strong fan-base within the metal/opera niche but operatic vocals don't appeal to the wider music-listening population. Anette was an unknown with a vocal approach that was vastly different to the much loved previous singer and thus alienated a lot of fans (but I must give her credit for making the band more approachable to the general population). So I guess Floor had an almost trouble-free welcome into the band and is enjoying favourable popularity because she has a respectable history in the metal scene. She is also a good blend of the two previous singers' styles. She also comes with an established fan-base. Anette's album shine isn't to my taste but I do like "Lies" and she seems happier doing her own thing. I just wish she would handle her NW dealings a little more maturely and professionally and concentrate on promoting her solo career. I'm sure the boys aren't totally blameless but their relative silence and respectful comments when asked about Anette are a lot more professional. She has a beautiful voice and will do well if she stops alienating the NW fans that were/are open to continuing to support her after NW. I do hope she finds a place in the music industry because her voice is too good not to share.
Floor is a perfect addition to Nightwish. I love her. I've liked all of Nightwish's leading ladies, I think all three of them have stand out Nightwish songs and each bring their unique flavour to Nightwish's sound. But Floor is the first time I've felt she does some songs better than Tarja and Annette. One of my favourite Nightwish songs is Ghost Love Score, Tarja is beautiful singing this song. But when I listened to Floor's live cover of it........... I felt she blew it out of the water! I honestly prefer Floor's cover more now. XD
It is pretty good. But it is merely a shadow of what Nightwish once was. The music is too mainstream now, and i'm not a fan of Floor Jansen. Endless forms most beautiful for example, it's seriously a pop song...
i loved nightish every album but it just doesnt feel like nightwish to me... i also hate their attacks on religion it seems forefront in this album let people believe in what they want why try to destroy it
That's the most idiotic review I've ever heard. The reviewer obviously has no idea of the band - he didn't even bother to pronounce one of their names correctly. Besides comparing Evanescence with Nightwish... Very uninformed, I'd be surprised if he has even heard a song of theirs..
I do really like this album, if you love beautiful Nightwish sounds and writing you are going to get it. But I can whole heartedly agree that if you listen to this after Imaginaerum or Century Child, you are going to be a little underwhelmed. This album is not bad, it's good, perhaps even great at parts, but Nightwish have released much better songs and much more beautiful albums. However, I will disagree that I really like Weak Fantasy as a song. Yes it is a very obvious slap against religion, but I do love how it conveys the use of religion as a fear tactic not condemning religion itself. Only the people who use it to brainwash and put fear in others. Edema Ruh, Shudder Before the Beautiful, Our Decades in the Sun and Alpenglow are my favourites.
What a review that was. This basically put words to everything I've been feeling about this album, which is also the reason I've only listened to it once despite being a huge Nightwish-fan. Such detail in your descriptions. Great stuff.

The greatest show on earth is by far my favorite track! Floor's vocals are outstanding. I do agree that its unnecessarily too long.
***** me again? did I argue with you before?
***** ohh....yeah I guess I am all over the place
***** nope that wasn't rude at all
Last few minutes of that track (stuff after last "we were here" lyric) is for the end celebrations for live shows I think and works brilliantly but as it own last few minutes aren't really needed

Amy Lee as far as I know was never really vocally trained. Maybe some coaching. But yes plays piano, guitar, and the harp.
But also sings very pretty and has a good emotive voice perfect technique or not.
And Sharon is entirely self taught
Salvador Rios Delmas really ??? read the bio's again mate !!
This was the first review I have seen by you, and I honestly didn't expect it to be this well-spoken and thought out. I agree on pretty much everything you said. I do like the album, but I miss the more personal/emotional feel of their previous albums. Anyway, I could go on for paragraphs. Instead, I will just say, great job on the review, and rock on. lml
the main issue is indeed the mixing. it killed floors voice :(
I actually agree with all the things you said, this album is good, especially instrumental parts, but it doesn't grab me emotionally as two previous albums did
I was also underwhelmed by EFMB. A lot of the riffs were rehashed from prior songs.
You say Weak Fantasy is the worst song? I strongly disagree, I find it to be the best on the album, audibly...just behind Shudder Before the Beautiful. Perhaps you're putting more value on the lyrics than I am.
Great review Mark. And hey, the haircut does look good.
Did you ever hear the band Civil War. Their album Gods and Generals came out a week or so ago. Can you do a review?
Heard you mentioned Melodic Death Metal, it's my favorite metal subgenre. Do you like it? If so, favorite bands?
It's Hietala BTW :)
Sonata Arctica is a band you should review their 2014 album Pariah's Child
How come you didn't review Rebel Heart? :(
I hope the next album features more Marco on vocals. There wasn't very many of those on this album.
Maybe Ensiferum - One Man Army review?
Are you going to review Godspeed You! Black Emporer's new album?
I love this album. The Greatest show on Earth is a masterpiece.
How about Avantasia's Ghostlights?
Even though I can' get technical like you do, I'm on phase with what you say. I picked up this album on release and I was let down a little, especially after the earth-shatteringly good opus that was Imaginaerum. It's simply not memorable enough, in terms of melody, and mixing melody with bass line. Shudder is definitely great, Weak Fantasy has a fantastic opening, The Eyes is a very haunting track, but I found myself getting a little bored throughout the album, especially on tracks like Alpenglow.
It's TOO-runen, Hie-TALA, and YAN-sen.
Completely agree about the production and Floor's delicate vocals being buried. Excellent review.
It's pronounced Yansen. Not unlike how Tarja is pronounced Tarya.
Are you going to review Hollywood Undead's new album when it comes out?
Yes, Beyond The Red Mirror is a fantastic album. One of Blind Guardian's strongest in a long time. Nightwish is one of my all time favorite bands in metal. I don't feel it is their strongest album because I Floor's vocals aren't as strong, but it is still a good listen. Edema Ruh is my favorite song on the album.
Dude great review I am glad I found your channel. Are you a Dream Theater or Iced Earth fan? I feel you would love those two bands.
Three Days Grace, Hollywood Undead, Godspeed?
I know it's difficult and it will never be perfect but at least trying a little would show some respect to the band members and the fellow Dutch/Finnish friends.
my favorites are angels, oceanborn, wishmater, century child and once
Soulof Aetherym many of history's greatest scientists were Christians and did their science to the glory of God.
Oh and also if you want to review Sonata Arctica- Pariah's Child. Another Finnish symphonic metal band. Thanks for the great vids.
For those wondering, Therion and Trans Siberian Orchestra were the brith of Symphonic Metal. Nightwish was the preacher.
dude you talk too fast
I actually liked this album far better than Dark Passion Play or Imaginaerum. I found it far more emotional and deep.
Sufjan Stevens please
nice review but...man,are you performing tongue twister?you speak WAYYY to fast for we non English speaking nations-.-
To be honest, I lost track of the album and didnt know it had come out already.
It's kind of like Metallica doing a christian album. lol
Too each their own. Easily their best album IMO and they finally have a vocalist instead of just singers.
Death Grips? Godspeed you?
Give them a listen
It's a great album and I love it. But in my honest opinion Dark Passion Play is better. But I loved it.
Good review overall, but there are some points that I don't agree at all:
- I know It's a matter of opinion, but I really don't think Dark Passion Play Is one of their top 3 albums. There are songs that seem to have been made with Tarja's volcas In mind and where Anette just didn't fit;
- You praised the technicality of the drums, when they are not really that complex. It seems like Kai was holding back, so when Jukka returns he will be able to play the new songs, because Kai is a way better drummer (sorry Jukka). An oportunity lost;
- The heavy riffs, aren't really that heavy either, and they sound too similar to other riffs from the past 3/4 albums (aswell as other parts).
Three Days Grace and/or Hollywood Undead please
I didn't like Imaginaerium at all, in fact it's the only Nightwish album that I've sold - and I don't regret it. I liked Floor a lot in the live perfomances I watched on youtube (I already used to listen to Floor in After Forever and Revamp) and I had high expectations about her and NW together, but since I listened to Elan I knew that they would downpower her voice. And that's unfortunately what they did in this album. I don't understand why someone would hire Floor and not let her use her voice at the height of her power. It is constantly muddled with the instrument and rarely allowed to shine.
I also felt many motives were repetitions of previous NW songs (Master Passion Greed seemed to function as infinite source.)
Since I didn't like Imaginaerium I felt this was a little bit more pleasing, but I don't have many hopes for future Nightwish releases any longer.
Marco Hetaala...
I still miss the "heavy metal" feel they had on their 3 first albums
Review vakouz - love beach 95 Album
Comparing heavy rock music like evanescence to metal... stopped there. Stop comparing bands based on the lead singer’s genitalia. Do you compare seether to Tarot? Of course not.
Good review. Also as a fan with all their albums, this is the first I won't be buying. I feel the song-writing on this album is rather pedestrian and is the first album to have not progressed or differed in some way. My opinion is that it is their worst, which is a shame given it is Floor's first album with them.
So totally agree about Evanescence! :D
I think this album is their best one yet. So majestic, beautiful and heavy at the same time. Floor's vocals are amazing.
Everyone has a different opinion about this album in general. I liked it but.... yeah just like you said, it's not quite bombastic and powerful as Imaginaerum, DPP.... :) Hope they'll make something better in the future.
btw. you're super cute :))))) :P
A similar as Coheed & Cambria
Pretty much everything he says is purely opinion. Talk to a real sound engineer about the mixing issues on this record... you know, someone who knows what they're talking about.
the tarja era was the best Annette sounded like a pop star
no, she didnt, you don't have to like her voice/delivery, but she didn't sound like a pop star.
+Ted Pysh theirs nothing wrong with pop when it's done right Annette just wasn't the best for nightwish however she did do a great job on storytime
Sean Quertinmont I disagree. Tarja had an amazing voice, but it limited Nightwish, Anette's more flexible range was a grand development and again, not pop.
Annette could do everything but the opera stuff floor can't even do the stuff
Oh ya. I remember all the time Tarja and Anette blew the crowd, and the band, away. Odd there are no videos of it happening, but I'm just sure they did .... didn't they?
Ok love the greatest show on earth but there is a better song with that name by machinae supremacy would strongly recommend it
"Talk...Talk...Talk" ;-) ...well it's always matter of taste!I listened the album few times from beginning to end and it sounds better and better.
PS. The first sentence is sarcasm...no offense!
RockSidi I do not think that such a thorough and elaborated view on the album can come from a person who has listen to it just a couple of times ;)
Teodor Kasabov I don't know that but the music is a happy thing to me and I will enjoy this new album ;-)
I enjoy Nightwish.I'm not going to dissect note by note.
Man you talk so much an say so little. Half a new band, what's there to expect ? Expect a new direction i''d say. All is said with that. Don't need to blabber on that for 14 min 35 sec's ...sjeesh.
Good review but Nightwish isn't really gothic band and Anette wasn't fired.
Tara Russell Yes but the band denied it.
Tara Russell Here is a link to one of the articles where she talks about not wanting Floor to do her maternity leave:
carlbegai.com/2014/02/02/anette-olzon-careful-what-you-wish-for/
Anette confuses being fired because she refused a good solid solution (Floor) to the problem she created (inability to complete tour, thus leaving the band in a bad situation) as being fired being of the pregnancy.
Be prepared because the subsequent fan discussions are mostly unflattering for Anette.
www.nightwishforum.com/index.php?/topic/3362-nightwish-anette-media/
Just to let you know, I was a big Anette supporter.
PS. Yours Is an Empty Hope is not about Anette as Anette thinks.
instagram.com/p/0m-WinLEfs/
It's about internet trolls who hide behind the anonymity of the internet (the smoke reference) and bash the band.
If you want to know more about Anette's recent activities:
www.nightwishforum.com/index.php?/topic/3305-anette-olzon/page-42?hl=%20anette%20%20olzon%20%20music
Thank you for your reviews which i'm used to watch. Agree with you on this. For me is the weakest Nightwish Album.
XD
There is nothing political about evolution
"Nightwish fan" "Marco Helata"
This hand is confusing
I disagree totally u, i think this is their best album ever.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gothic!? You have no idea what you're talking about! Gothic metal is My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost etc...
it makes me happy to see my favorite band see some love
Haircut looks good! No homo!
It is pretty good. But it is merely a shadow of what Nightwish once was. The music is too mainstream now, and i'm not a fan of Floor Jansen. Endless forms most beautiful for example, it's seriously a pop song...
glue sniffing is bad for you
Love this album still miss Tarja :(
i loved nightish every album but it just doesnt feel like nightwish to me... i also hate their attacks on religion it seems forefront in this album let people believe in what they want why try to destroy it
Dude-- you're stoned.. NW better than ever...
This album mixing sucks!!!!
That's the most idiotic review I've ever heard. The reviewer obviously has no idea of the band - he didn't even bother to pronounce one of their names correctly. Besides comparing Evanescence with Nightwish... Very uninformed, I'd be surprised if he has even heard a song of theirs..
B o r i s s l a v that's right, if someone disagrees with you, they're an idiot...
