If they didn’t have the “filler” , we wouldn’t get used to the characters/get to know them and if we didn’t get to know them , seeing them in danger (like in the season 1 and 2 finales) , we wouldn’t care as much.
I just can't agree. After 5 episodes of watching the main characters, their personality is pretty much explained. It's a kid's show after all and the character are not that complex... or funny half the time.
Interestingly, most of the criticisms you have towards season 1, I also have towards season 3. Season 2 was the only season that nailed that balance between story and continuity in my opinion. However, while I think Amphibia is a generally very inconsistent show, their good episodes are really good. So its an interesting experience that leaves me bored a lot, but also keeps me watching under the hope that they'll pull off something epic again. And if the latest episode is anything to go by, my patience is being rewarded with some strong final episodes.
Yeah me too, and honestly I didn't really mind the "filler" episodes of season one too much since they were at least fun and were useful for giving the characters some personality, but in the third season they were incredibly jarring. The first half of season 3 is probably the weakest part of the series
The thing is with amphibia's first season is that it feels more like your standard kids cartoon, it allowed the ratings to go up the world to be savored and the characters to seem interesting enough to stick around. For me as I found the show exactly as you did Amphibia seemed like a little slice of life show, it was comfortable and got enough drama to enjoy and keep going. I like to think Season 1 is like going to the beach as a family, you get your family drama, your excitement and maybe even a highly traumatic experience that sticks with you until the end of your days but all in all good clean family fun. all in all it's a comforting memory that sparks your adventurous side Season 2 (which i think thematically is the best season) is like going on a road trip with friends or family. The amazing stops, the exciting food and the time of your life with those you care about a true spectacle that will be remembered by all for everything that it gave you. A true splendor of a life well lived. Season 3 is the aftermath of that trip: a reluctant return to norm knowing school or work is around the corner and maybe there's one last adventure out there before you go back. Now I LOVE season 3 personally as that reverse fish out of water after the emotional highs really does good to reel you back in for the finale. I left every season hoping for more and that's why to me once the entire thing is streamable I'll revisit those memories and good times once again and warm back up to a show that had me bursting at the seems for every Friday for the last year and half.
In my opinion, there are no fillers in Amphibia. Each episode helps introduce the world and the characters so we can care about them. These "fillers" helped me empathize and love every single villager in Wartwood. In all honesty, I saw a lot of Tolkien (Fellowship and Love for Nature) and Ghibli (Anti-War and Anti-Industrialism) in Amphibia. The Frogs of Wartwood remind me of the Hobbits of the Shire, the Toads remind me of the hardiness and stubbornness of the Dwarves, and the Newts remind me of the intelligence of the nature-loving Elves. Additionally, the Frobots (Except Frobo) remind me of the Orcs who are evil and destructive with the Core reminding me of Sauron.
I just finished watching the entire show so far, and… yeah, I’ve got to agree with you. I feel like show definitely had some pacing issues and kinda forgot about its overarching story for long stretches… and I’ll admit, I actually skipped two episodes without even knowing what they were because I was so impatient to get to the finale. I still enjoyed it, but you can really tell that the writers upped their game with Season 2.
Interesting perspective - love the analysis. You articulated understandable points in a clear manner. I became hooked on the show because of those character & comedy moments that you've mentioned - each episode of their shenanigans endeared me to them. The overarching story was just a pleasant surprise 🤣 Again, fascinating to see a perspective/retrospective of the season as one big picture. Keep Up The Good Work~!
Thank You! I really try to be as respectful as I possibly can to how other people look at this season since it's so well loved, but I just wanted to show my problems with it. Idk if that means I'm a good or bad film student (probably the latter if I'm being honest lol), but eh, I thought it'd just be something fun to talk about, so I'm glad you enjoyed!
Honestly I really enjoyed amphibia season 1 and I know everything is subjective but I’d say the “filler” in amphibia is what makes the show work, most people would probably be wanting to learn more about the characters if there was no filler and I think the best way to go into amphibia is to not expect it to be completely like other shows, I have partially made shows worse for myself by going in with a oh it will be like this and that even if it won’t. It’s good to not have expectations to high and it’s also good to just enjoy what you watch. I like all the characters and everything in season one, I do believe with no doubt season 2 is better and improves season 1s flaws but that doesn’t mean it’s going to make me look down at season 1. Maybe I am just writing nonsense because i am not the oldest and not the best at analysing but I do stick with my opinions. Still enjoyed the video tho, hope I didn’t sound mean. Already subbed since I still like your content.
That's honestly really understandable. The reason I did get into Amphibia at all was because Disney+ had recommended it to me after first binge watching the The Owl House S1, and had heard that they were a bit similar, so there was indeed a level of expectation going in, so maybe that's why I feel the way I do towards it. It's kinda hard to find something I can just enjoy watching since I'm a film student, so I just unintentionally analyze everything lol, but I respect why people love the first season of Amphibia, even if I disagree, I still respect how they feel
I agree! I started Season 2 yesterday, but the pacing of season 1 did not check off the boxes for my own personal preferences when it comes to shows like this. This is not to say the show is not good, I did find season 1 charming, I was just expecting something different. So far I am loving the references and guest VAs of Season 2, this dialed up the comedy for me by 10. Thank you for your perspective, great video!
Thank You! Yeah, never really meant to say that it's bad, it's just that it's not exactly what I expected after what was set up after the pilot. The characters and humor are indeed charming, it's just that it kinda drags or stretches out what the show set up for itself or something. Idk, I have very strange opinion on the show as a whole, which I'm not sure tells me if I'm a good or bad film student (probably the latter in all honesty lol), but I'm glad you enjoyed regardless!
@@MidgardMadness oh no worries I didn't get the impression you thought the show was bad or anything. Good luck on your film studies! You will do great!
I carry the sentiment of amphibias first season, the pacing of season 1 and 2 are night and day. Season 1s pacing feels really slow and it feels like it takes forever for things to happen. I feel that if season 1 had episodes split between Anne and Sasha before reunion. Season 2 handled this the best with Season 3 was fine but some of the earth episodes could be replaced with episodes in amphibia as we see a parallel between Anne and Sasha where Sasha has to regain the trust of wartwood after the events of true colors
I don't disagree with what you're saying I just have different tastes. I don't mind filler as much as most people seem to for example In Steven universe seems to like townie episodes even when it's sandwiched between very overarching plot-relevant episodes cause I just like those characters' interactions enough to not be bothered by it. The same goes for amphibia I don't think I'd care as much as I do about the characters without this filler but you might be right about them needing to balance it better with the main story-relevant episodes or elements. It's also easier to forgive the way this is handled if you think of Anne's life before she came to amphibia as a mystery that slowly gets unraveled with Sasha being an ominous mysterious figure of Anne's past life
I think it would've been better as you said if we weren't just seeing Anne's adaptions to Amphibia. But it would've also been great to see Marcy too, even just a little bit. Each time I watch the theme song takeovers from Sasha and Mars I just can't help but feel like we missed out on so much more of what season one could've been.
That's one of the major things I want to talk about when I come around to making my video around S3; after everything that S2 did, it felt like it was THE GIRLS story, not just Anne's. It could've greatly benefit a lot of its quality if it had been split evenly between the 3 of them, rather than mostly focusing on Anne with the occasional mention of the other 2. Now, for Marcy being in S1, I would say might be a stretch or asking for too much. The mystery around her throughout S1 until her eventually involvement in S2 really built up what was to come pretty well, but indeed, the first season could've benefited greatly had we've seen more of Sasha's side of the story, would've made the finale feel a bit more built up and impactful for the bigger picture of the show
Yeah you lost me when you siad that most of the season was "filler" cause I don't see it as such. Season 1 of Amphibia really got me hooked from the first episode and I have been enjoying it ever since. I never had a problem with the episodic nature of the season and honestly I didn't mind it. I feel like the episodic nature was the season's strrength. None of the season felt filler in my eyes. I also disagree with your thoughts on Sasha and I personally thought that the character was written well. The only thing I do agree with you on is that Season 2 is better, that we can agree on. You may disagree, and that's fine but in my opinion Season 1 of Amphibia was good.
Seeing the comments here, I feel like the idea that you NEED "adventure of the week" episodes to develop characters properly... is a tad close-minded. There's plenty of serialised stories that have no problem with developing the characters along the way. Fully serialised stories also have "breather" segments between journeys, missions, expeditions, etc. They feature all kinds methods of character development & growth. I think the main reason Amphibia has so much episodic content is Disney. They're still rather anti-serialisation. They prioritise rerun-friendly shows. I'm fairly confident the show's creator would've made S1 more serialised if he could. Like, Sasha's sub-plot at Toad Tower begs for more fleshing out. Maybe not 50% but at least 30% of the season could've been about her. For an example of a fully serialised cartoon set in a creative fantasy world, I would suggest Jim Button.
Personally would’ve loved a few Sasha episodes in Season one about her time in Toad Tower being fleshed out which sucks but still Reunion still one my 2nd favorite Amphibia season finale.
Given that many of the supposed filler in Season 1 actually ended up coming back in Season 3 in some major capacity (Domino 2, Tritonio, the Moss Man, etc.), yeah I can't agree with this take. Sometimes a slow burn beginning pays off in the long run.
what did those characters do though? they came back for one battle never to be seen again. they didn’t need any more screen time. they were written as 1 offs and treated as mains, taking away more time for more important and quite frankly way more interesting characters.
my friend from school recommended me to watch this during summer break. i recently finished season one and i skipped alot of episodes there and im watching season 2 now, still skipping the roadtrip shenanigans. honestly, i simply want to watch the important parts (like sasha's story and all) but the 'filler' episodes just bore me and like you said, the pacing seems... odd. i appreciate the video though :) nice to know i wasnt the only one who thinks the fillers are...just there.
I said before that I disagree about Sasha in Season 1 and never explained why.....whoops. Anyway, I would argue that the lack of Sasha in Season 1 is more of a strength for the show. To me it's more of a less is more approach for the character and honestly with how they handled Sasha not just this season but Seasons 2 and three as well, I think the less is more approach works. Especially in season 1.
So, question, what tools and microphone do you use to make these videos? Everyone makes it seem like a piece of cake, but I have no idea how to incorporate scenes from actual shows without cropping them and doing all of this, since I actually am planning to give my own take on the show as a whole by ranking the seasons. And honestly, Season 1 for the most part, didn't feel all that boring, to me. Yes, the issue with Sasha is still present within me, but I kind of like the episodes dedicated to the other characters that aren't the Plantars, which yes, makes me give this season a 7/10 as well, unlike most of Season 3, which was just atrocious and handled poorly. I'm sorry, but not even All In could top True Colors for me. It was still fun to watch but was a bit contrived here and there. Here's hoping The Hardest Thing delivers promptly.
I use a yeti nano for recording my commentary, and I get most of my footage from screen capture through streaming services And I do agree that S3 has many problems that kinda holds it back, which I'm gonna discuss in my S3 video, or my retrospective of the entire show, and while I do think that both True Colors and All In have their strengths and weaknesses, I can see why people may not like one or the other, so I understand where you're coming from with how you feel towards All In
@@MidgardMadness Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure screen capture is via PC or laptop since if it's on a phone, the screen will just be black once looked back at. And speaking of S3, I think the finale, while it does have issues, albeit VERY few, I think it made me tolerate almost all the atrocities I had to sit through. Like True Colors, I actually cried at Anne's "death", before all that was ruined thanks to Disney shoving dolls, Big City Greens and Doctor Strange advertisements in my face.
Nothing against you but oh my gosh I hate it so much when people compare Amphibia to The Owl House. Also personally I love season 1 so much I feel like it does have a lot of plot hidden if you look into it, again nothing against you I don’t really want this to feel offensive or anything
Don't worry, I knew I would get comments like this when I first wrote the script for this video. I really didn't want to have to put stuff like that in there, but I felt like to support my case, I had to. I know both shows have their strengths and weaknesses, along with both of their different fan bases, but it's just something I personally perceive, and I respect how other people see it
Personally I think Amphibia‘s first season was way better than owl houses. Amphibia is hilarious from the start and got me hooked on the story by the first episode. The owl House has one of the worst first episodes I think I’ve ever seen in a TV show. The first season of the owl House is just boring. It’s so generic. Everything it did had been done before by better writers. I love the second season of the owl house but the first season is one of the most mediocre things I have ever watched and I hate it because of that. Amphibia had amazing characters that I instantly liked from the start but the owl house was not the same. I honestly didn’t give a shit about any of the characters in the owl house until the second season. So basically to summit all up I think the owl house has a horrible first season and amphibias is much better. I just wanna say though that all of this is just my opinion
I respect your opinion. I think the whole "Everything it did had been done before by better writers." is one of the things I disagree with. Everything that first episode did had been done before, you're right, but the writers of The Owl House put their own spin on it and that's one of the things that matters most to me.
Some of the points you bring up are true, but when you bring up the owl house, it’s first season has the same problem with pacing. Also, when you bring up some points, you show clips from season 2
Yeah I’m in agreement with how you feel about Season one, and honestly it’s taken me until 10 episodes to actually consider Amphibia worth watching (Toad Tax/Prison Break). Sasha is sadly underutilized in Season one which kinda sucks cause I wanted to see more of the Frog and Toads conflict on both sides, along with Sasha’s character. Season two is really the best season for pacing and serialized adventure story gaining up to True Colors.
This show don’t have filler all episodes are important even the episodes that you see that doesn’t make sense it does for example: the zombie mushroom episode it was important for a future episode for season 3 and the road hog filler that is not filler was at the end of the season fighting along the Amphibian
I'm sorry but I fail to see how is Gravity Falls season 1 paced any better with its overarching story and I love that show. You get a hint that Stan is up to something in ep 1, then nothing until the end. episode 4 introduces Gideon, and you see him again in a meaningful way again only in episode 11 and then nothing again until the last 2 episodes. You get some tiny hints (more foreshadowing) in other episodes, but same is true for Amphibia. And let me say that I don't have a problem with it, becuase I enjoyed the episodes in between. Same for Amphibia
I suppose the fact you get 20 22-minute episodes instead of 40 11-minute ones makes it easier to get through it. Amphibia S1 juggles a lot more plotlines as a result and feels longer. But yes, Gravity Falls S1 pacing was nothing to write home about either. I recall getting rather annoyed by the lack of progress by the time Land Before Swine aired for the first time.
I agree. I only got through it was because I knew S2 was gonna be better. Which it was, and I love it. S2 really took all the flaws from S1 and improved amazingly on it.
Yeah, currently writing a script discussing why S2 was such a big improvement over S1. I respect people for liking this season, I can see why, but I just can't seem to get over all the problems I personally have with it
There was HELLA filler/‘filler’ for the first season, but still had great moments. I feel it’s not as memorable, intense, attention grabbing (for me), or as dark as the later seasons. Battle at toad tower especially had me motivated to stay a bit more.
Indeed, I go more in detail about it in my S2 video, but it was a big improvement from S1. Don't get me wrong, S1 was still fun with some of it's episodic plots, but just really didn't do much with the interesting overarching story that it set up in the pilot
Yeah, I know, a lot of what's brought up in those episodes would return in S3, but at the time, we didn't know that, so it kinda just felt like they were doing something for nothing? Idk, I have a very strange opinoin on the show as a whole, which I'm not sure tells me if I'm a good or bad film student (probably the latter in all honesty lol)
Honestly I think seasons 1 and 3 have way too much filler. But the odd thing is that 3A's filler is really enjoyable to me while 1 and 3b's kinda are a slog for md
Eventually I'm gonna do a video discussing the entire 3rd season, I'm just stock piled on script ideas at the moment so it may be a little bit until I can get around to making it
Yup I agree. Owl house did really good and made me watch more owl house. And gravity Falls.... it's SOOO GOOD FROM THE START. Anyways i agree I wanted to see more sasha in S1. I got me really bored by watching the 1st season. Finale was good but still. Season 2 saved the show for me it was more lore-up. Great video!
Thank You! Hope you enjoyed. Really felt like a hot take for me to discuss something like this since the fandom loves this season so much, so your words mean a lot! Currently editing a video discussing what made S2 such a big improvement by comparison, so I hope you look forward to more!
I personally enjoyed season 1 of Amphibia more than of The Owl House. It just clicked with me better. Owl House season 2 is definetely a BIG improvement, and while it probably could be argued it's better than Amphibia, I just can't help it, personally I like Amphibia just a bit more. Just to be clear, I really like both shows, just one a slightly more than the other.
Cuphead did the same thing with a lot of filler to the point where really the second episode after the carnival should have been with King Dice cause he is number 2 and the episode was really good and introduced a good threat instead we got "watch the baby episode". With Amphibia yes you're that guy cause Gravity Falls had a stronger first episode but also got into filler really yo u can be very critical and say the pacing is off but let me tell you this ( YOU haven't watched enough TV shows if you are just staying in cartoon shows) Really go watch a lot more and see how good you actually have it here cause you are criticizing a really amazing show and if there were more critic like you season 2 and 3 wouldn't have been made because of poor ratings. So really be grateful of what you got and rate the shows that are good with as close to 10/10 to freaking keep them alive. Also Over the garden wall does the same thing but has a great payoff so really straw-man argument here.
This is not cool, Amphibia is waay better than Owl house. seriously, perhaps you can just relax and enjoy the comedy and the funny style of life in Amphibia, and then you might see that fast pacing everything does not really work, like how would you know all the characters in Wartwood and their traits if there wasn't season 1, and you would then miss out on a lot during the rebelliance in season 3. Anyways, if you want to critisize something, maybe do it privately.
in season 1, Anne seems to learn something, then forgets it in the next episode and makes the same mistake again. it was annoying. also how most of the time, the events from each episode didn't affect the others episodes. It was hard for me to finish season 1. thankfully, season 2 and 3 redeems most of the mistakes of season 1. people still praise the show as perfect but it isn't, the finale is perfect, but the beginning is trash, for me.
"people still praise the show like it's perfect" so that's not true at all, just because some people give a show/movie a lot of praise doesn't mean they think it's perfect or that they're acting like it's perfect.
If they didn’t have the “filler” , we wouldn’t get used to the characters/get to know them and if we didn’t get to know them , seeing them in danger (like in the season 1 and 2 finales) , we wouldn’t care as much.

I use a yeti nano for recording my commentary, and I get most of my footage from screen capture through streaming services
And I do agree that S3 has many problems that kinda holds it back, which I'm gonna discuss in my S3 video, or my retrospective of the entire show, and while I do think that both True Colors and All In have their strengths and weaknesses, I can see why people may not like one or the other, so I understand where you're coming from with how you feel towards All In
@@MidgardMadness Thanks for the info.
I know both shows have their strengths and weaknesses, along with both of their different fan bases, but it's just something I personally perceive, and I respect how other people see it
@@MidgardMadness Ya, either way it is still cool to see others opinions even if they go against mine sometimes, loved the video
Everything that first episode did had been done before, you're right, but the writers of The Owl House put their own spin on it and that's one of the things that matters most to me.
worst take in history of takes
I agree with you about season 1
Some of the points you bring up are true, but when you bring up the owl house, it’s first season has the same problem with pacing.
Also, when you bring up some points, you show clips from season 2
i agree that it was a bit drawn out but i still had a really fun time.
I actually watched it on increased speed on my computer just to get through to the good parts, and I really don't think that was a mistake.
I really agree season 2 was the season the show really got good in my opinion.
Indeed, I go more in detail about it in my S2 video, but it was a big improvement from S1. Don't get me wrong, S1 was still fun with some of it's episodic plots, but just really didn't do much with the interesting overarching story that it set up in the pilot
hey, those fillers my friend are just forshadowing trust me
Yeah, I know, a lot of what's brought up in those episodes would return in S3, but at the time, we didn't know that, so it kinda just felt like they were doing something for nothing? Idk, I have a very strange opinoin on the show as a whole, which I'm not sure tells me if I'm a good or bad film student (probably the latter in all honesty lol)
@@MidgardMadness wow you replied quick, you are the type of youtuber I can enjoy watching and you get a sub
I just try to do my best lol
I really liked Season 1, but ofc everyone has their own opinion :D
Honestly I think seasons 1 and 3 have way too much filler. But the odd thing is that 3A's filler is really enjoyable to me while 1 and 3b's kinda are a slog for md
Can you review amphibia season 3a?
Eventually I'm gonna do a video discussing the entire 3rd season, I'm just stock piled on script ideas at the moment so it may be a little bit until I can get around to making it
@@MidgardMadness Ok thanks for replying.
thank you this is exactly why I stopped watching amphibia
Well yeah! Almost the whole Disney community loves it
Yup I agree.
@@MidgardMadness yes!
I personally enjoyed season 1 of Amphibia more than of The Owl House.
It just clicked with me better.
Owl House season 2 is definetely a BIG improvement, and while it probably could be argued it's better than Amphibia, I just can't help it, personally I like Amphibia just a bit more.
Just to be clear, I really like both shows, just one a slightly more than the other.
it can’t be argued, it’s a fact lol. season 2 of owl house is better than 95% of amphibia
Cuphead did the same thing with a lot of filler to the point where really the second episode after the carnival should have been with King Dice cause he is number 2 and the episode was really good and introduced a good threat instead we got "watch the baby episode".
With Amphibia yes you're that guy cause Gravity Falls had a stronger first episode but also got into filler really yo u can be very critical and say the pacing is off but let me tell you this
( YOU haven't watched enough TV shows if you are just staying in cartoon shows)
Really go watch a lot more and see how good you actually have it here cause you are criticizing a really amazing show and if there were more critic like you season 2 and 3 wouldn't have been made because of poor ratings.
Anyways, if you want to critisize something, maybe do it privately.
i also think s1 is overrated
in season 1, Anne seems to learn something, then forgets it in the next episode and makes the same mistake again. it was annoying. also how most of the time, the events from each episode didn't affect the others episodes.
