  • Amphibia has earned its way into the hearts of many fans with its mysterious story, its loveable characters, and its heartfelt animation and humor. But, it did seem to have a rough start when it released its troubled first season. However, the show would eventually grow bigger and stronger in its inevitable 2nd season, but what exactly did it do to improve and redeem itself?

      That is another good way of looking at it. I just personally picked the term "redeemed" since I personally thought that S1 was kinda a rough start. I know people love S1 of the show, and I respect that love that they have for it despite my gripes with it, but I just can't seem to get over the problems I personally have with it, which may be why I personally found S2 such a great step in the right direction to make the show what it is now.

      What about "focused", because I feel like the overall weakness of season 1 was how filler heavy it was, but in season 2 the show finally started to bring more and more attention on the overarching plot.

      Honestly, every cartoon is kind of like that. Starts off slow and is still finding an identity. When Steven Universe first got his powers threw an ice cream sandwich, would you have believed he'd be going through things like intergenerational trauma and identity crises? Even episodic shows can be thrown into that. SpongeBob season 1 is great, but let's be honest, most remember seasons 2 and 3 a lot more. That's what got us Band Geeks, Chocolate with Nuts, Idiot Box, The Camping Episode, and so many other classics. Season 1 had it's episodes too, like Pizza Delivery but I think it's humor came more from the charm than the characters themselves.

      I honestly didn’t like Season 1, seeing it as too much filler and not enough story, especially with cliffhangers that were never brought up in Season 2, that I thought would never be brought up again, but were brought up in Season 3. Still, Season 1 is my least favorite. That’s why I love modern Disney Channel. They’ve proven that it can be something for all ages, not just with Amphibia, but other shows like the Owl House.

      The only TRUE filler episode was "Thai Feud / Adventures in Catsitting". That should have been shelved for something more important, like maybe expanding the finale to two episodes instead of one. Other than that, every episode held some manner of importance.

      @@GihirahimOfTheShadow I'm sorry but those episodes aren't filler either.
      Thai Feud focused on Sprig being part of Anne's family especially with what we learn back in Hopping Mall regarding his parents. It is NOT filler and it never will be.
      Adventures in Catsitting foreshadows something that happened in the finale plus we get a great moment with Mr. Boonchuy thanking the Plantars' for taking care of Anne. That is not filler either.

    As a fan of the kind of humor the show uses, I honestly had a great time with Season 1 and Season 3's more laidback episodes as much as I had with the more important ones, but I completely agree that Season 2's more plot driven approach did wonders with all the characters, and you explain all the reasons why so well. Great work! ^^

    I definitely agree that Season 2 was better than Season 1. It kept me enticed and wanting more. Season 3’s first half is definitely similar to season 1, but honestly I would say it was better and sort of fixed the problems. By sort of I mean while there is a lot of filler there is at least one half of each set of episodes that drives the story forward. (Except episode 3 if we don’t count Sprig getting closer to Anne’s mom which I do) It was nice to have that half and half, and then going back to Amphibia shifted the focus onto the story like Season 2. I still think Season 2 is better than Season 3 though (even though All In is DEFINITELY my favorite episode).

    @ Midgard Madness I personally see the entirety of season 1 being locked into wartwood as a way of the writers letting the audience know to slow down and get to know the characters before the bigger adventure. The friendship between Sprig and Anne developing, the sisterhood of Polly and Anne, Hop Pop and Anne learning to accept their different personalities, the entire Frog Fam learning how to fight together and develop love towards one another, Anne's slow development from a selfish uncaring teen into a near-selfless caring town protector, Hop Pop showing time and time again how he cares for the little guy and his family, Sprig learning to make choices that benefit others, the dynamic of Anne and Sasha in the finale, there is so much great foundation laid in season 1 that I agree with most of the comments in here saying that I disagree with the words that season 2 just enhanced the series, it did not redeem the series because it was already pretty good in season 1.

    I'm sorry but the filler complaint is BS.
    I don't see "filler" episodes in Amphibia. I feel that Season 1 and especially Season 3 feel more important to the point that they are necessary.
    It's hard to take a critique of Amphibia seriously when they call certain episodes "filler" when they are obviously.
    That being said I do agree with you about Season 2 and why it's a great season.

      One of the things I praised about Amphibia is that it easily subverted the idea of filler entirely, and I can expland on my idea
      When Season 1 was airing (in the bomb format), I was on vacation with my family, and watched the episodes from my laptop. One of the episodes I skipped because I thought it was filler was "Hop Popular," because I had thought that it wouldn't lead to anything. However, imagine my surprise hearing the line about HP running for mayor and that's why Grime wanted to kill him.
      At the time, I thought to myself "Wait... That episode that I missed actually has some plot significance?" Now, mind you, there are a lot of episodes like that, but the callbacks are all really well-done and wholesome. For example; "Fight or Flight," I had read the description of the episode and thought "Oh, Anne's going to save Marcy, only to learn that she's under the Core's control." NOPE! Domino II is who arrives, and the use of Domino II in the plot makes perfect sense.

    Season 3b. That was worth every episode towards it. The three finale episodes. I was gushing tears for almost an hour after that. Season 3a was not the best, but it wasn’t bad, there just wasn’t much plot important stuff. Season 3b. That was probably one of my favorite chunks of amphibia. And the hardest thing. That knocked my socks off with the whole Anne dying thing. And once I put them back on when she came back to life, they got knocked off again with the trio leaving forever. They will never come back on. I am still sad, and I still have a lot of questions, THERE WAS AN ENTIRE NEW CONTINENT TO EXPLORE! and now it’s gone forever. Also can I just say that in one scene in the aquarium where Anne works now there was a sign that said *get lost in Amphibia* and not only did that hit hard as it was, but, also the in in get lost in amphibia was super small, so at first glance it said *get lost amphibia*. I personally analyzed this as, welp, this shows over so scram everybody. I don’t know, I might just be over analyzing.

    I didn’t like a lot of the filler in season 1, but I actually really liked all the filler in Newtopia in Season 2 that you implied was padding out the runtime near the end. The show had just introduced Marcy and Andrias at the end of a long journey there, so it had already earned one or two episodes of filler, but the fact that they were in an entirely new setting too meant that Newtopia would probably feel underexplored if the characters didn’t get some downtime to spend exploring this exciting new place.

    • @MidgardMadness
      @MidgardMadness  2 роки тому +1

      That's honestly something that I wish I brought up in this video looking back on it, cause like how I mentioned that in the first few episodes, despite the characters not doing too much for the actual plot, it still felt a bit relative since it's been established that we're slowly getting to where we need to go, the same sort of thing can be said for the episodes you're talking about. Indeed, we spend a few episodes of doing nothing but exploring Newtopia, but 1. (like you said) it gives us a chance to see what this new location has to offer, and 2. it's been established that Marcy and Andrias are doing research in the background on how they can advance the story, so we'll just take some time with the characters as we wait. All this ultimately falls back to what I said in the video, "It feels like there's a sense of direction now," like no matter we do, whether that be exploring a city or a road trip, it still felt relative to the story somehow

      I do agree, some of the best shows have had a slow first season, the first one that comes to my head other than Amphibia is Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But, the problem that I had with Amphibia's first season was that it set up the premise of the overarching story WAAAY early on, and I guess I was just expecting them to do more with it from that point as the season went on, but just didn't feel like it was doing much towards it, if that makes sense lol

      @@MidgardMadness Also I have another question is sasha like azula from avatar the last airbender if you have seen that and also do you think cartoons have an easier time telling an overarching story than live action shows because their are less complications like cast members leaving and such and how long should the average cartoon go for I think less is more personally

    • @MidgardMadness
      @MidgardMadness  2 роки тому

      1.There are a lot of similarities Sasha can have with other characters since there's a lot of redemption arc type characters in media, and some of them can be different in their own way for the context of the story they're a part of. So I'm not surprised people find her similar to characters like Azula despite the differences they have.
      2. Live actions shows can still have the opportunity to tell over arcing stories, the first one that came to MY mind are shows like "Agents Of Shield." Despite the MANY problems that the show has, it still had the sense that there is an overarching story to be told, so it is possible, just not easy. But, cartoons do seem to have a bigger reputation telling overarching stories since they don't have to deal with the problems like you mentioned that live action has to face (Cast members leaving, different advancements in the field, etc.) The only limitation that cartoons really have is to keep it all consistent, such as the voices of all the characters, the artstyle that they choose to use, and despite the creative freedom they have with animation, making sure that everything they do still remains grounded to the story. All in all, I think both live action and cartoons can indeed tell an overarching story, it's just that both come with their challenges.
      and 3. I'm kinda in the "in-between" category for when it comes to a shows length. Of course, I don't want shows to be TOO short so that the creators behind them can get the chance to tell the stories they want if it is necessary for it to have more than one season in order to completely express their vision. But, I also don't think that a show should go on for TOO long for the chance of them losing interest or ideas for it, I mean, look a show like Family Guy or The Simpsons, or even SpongeBob. The publishers and people behind these projects have to make money off of them, that's just how life is, I just don't want that to be the ONLY reason for a show to keep going.
