Radical red implemented so many cool buffs to a lot of underwhelming and bad pokemon, making the game a lot more balanced overall and give players so many more good options for building teams
What went unmentioned is that Meganium's main issue lies within the same fault as all the other Grass type starters - its design is simply outclassed by its middle evolution.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the gen 2 starters didn't get their hidden abilities until gen 6. So even if Leaf Guard was a Hydration clone, Meganium would've gotten it when permanent weather was no longer a thing. And just look at how much better Feraligatr became with Sheer Force, it boosted up it's viability a lot. Giving Meganium Leaf Guard was such a missed chance to buff it.
When I was in middle school, playing SoulSilver, my game data for it corrupted and I lost everything in it. I was very sad but my sister asked me to use Chikorita instead since she wanted one for her Dex and didn't have it. After rebuilding my team and getting back all my favorites, I got a new one along the way in Meganium. If you hate Meganium, were gonna have problems
I love Meganium, I actually got a shiny Chikorita named Lemon as my starter in heartgold a couple days ago after much time doing resets. I look forward to seeing him blossom.
I went out of my way to dodge all spoilers about sword and shield to be able to play it blind on release. The day before I started playing it I was spoiled Sobble's evolutions. I would usually have been annoyed at being spoiled. Instead, I am very happy I was, for if I hadn't been spoiled I would have picked Sobble and watched it devolve into the abject monstrosity that is Inteleon. I was saved from feeling that despair and disappointment, and for that I am forever thankful.
Inteleon is EASILY the ugliest starter design and Gen 8 starters overall are my least favorite batch. Rillaboom saves it because funny monkey but even then I feel like the in-game model sucks
The Gen 8 starters demonstrate the "new Pokemon are too humanoid" criticism pretty well. Sure, there were always 'humanshape' Pokemon like Mr. Mime, but those were discrete lines, and didn't apply to families that started out as other species like rabbits and newts. I don't even think that these designs are objectively bad, but they are clearly stylistically different from those of early gen starters.
@@globalistgamer6418 It's really disappointing bc I like all of them up until they reach their final form. Even the middle stages. It doesn't help that all of them become humanoid when we used to get a good variety of body types. Rilla's the least offensive bc apes are somewhat humanoid anyway, I just wish the drum was incorporated into its chest, not some clunky separate object it carries.
Meganium missed out on a mega form for a similar reason to poor dragonite, who would have had to hold the dragoniteite, which sounds like something to help your dragons with their insomnia.

I actually cannot concieve of why you could hate Meganium. It's adorable. Sure it's not super strong but, it's still an adorable, iconic and well designed Pokemon. I've used it on many playthroughs and it functions really well as a support Pokemon with Leech Seed, Reflect/Light Screen and powder moves to help its teammates.
I don't know if I would label emboar as "the worst" starter, but I would certainly label it as "the most forgetable". This thing has NOTHING that makes it interesting. - it does not have a mega evolution like the gen 1 and gen 3 starters. -it did not get its own z-crystal -its typying is not original for a starter -it does not have any regional forms -its stats are trash (Its speed is not fast enough to outrun anything and not slow enough to abuse trick room, the defences aren't high enough to make up for its low speed) -it's movepool isn't doing it any favours -it's hidden ability is totally lame. -it has never had any success in OU.even as a gimmicky niche. -it didn't get a gigantamax It has nothing that makes it fun to use. ALL the other starters have SOMETHING going for them, emboar has nothing.
Worth pointing out emboar was the 3rd fire/fighting starter in a row, which compounds with it's other lack of interesting points, effectively being the start of people being sick of the fire/fighting starter "trend"
Nah alot of these are just flat out wrong, you're just a hater "Doesnt have a mega evolution" yeah 70% of starters don't, how tf is that an emboar problem "Didn't get its own Z crystal" Brother, less than 20 pokemon in total got a unique z-move, again, how is that an emboar problem??????? "Doesnt have regional form" just give it time man, the only starters to get regional forms as of yet are the 3 in PLA, goddamn man "Stats are trash" Base 100+ mixed attacking stats and high hp pool would like to have a word with you "Bad movepool" Said about the starter that probably has the most diverse offensive movepool What other fire type off the top of your head learns scald? "Hidden ability is lame" Emboars flare blitz already hits like a truck, and having an extra 30% boost makes it even better, not to me tion it helps wild charge and head smash, which are both good, relavant coverage options for the boar, so its not a one trick pony ability "Nothing that makes it fun to use" Thats just subjective You claim emboar has nothing going for them, but I could probably use any of your "points" against most starter, and it wouldn't be right there either
@@leviistired3621 I think that you missed my point. maybe if my fault for not expressing it properly: emboar has every single one of the flaws I mentioned. the other starters have some of them but not all of them. also a friendly reminder that my points were about being "memorable". all the other starters have something making them even a little memorable. -charizard: genuine success in OU in gen 3 6 and 7 not one but 2 megas and a gigantamax. unic typying for starter venusaur: mega evolution has had some niches in OU in several occasions. bulky grass type unic typying for starter blastoise: mega evolution a few niches. now it knows shell smash. meganium: it was niche in OU only in gen 2. somewhat bulky grass type but that bulky. typhlosion: has a regional. in gens 2 and 3 it had the nice gimmick of knowing thunderpunch (special move back then) allowing it to run whatever hidden power it wanted. also in gen 9 it has a gimmicky niche with abusing eruption. feraligatr: the stats are actually decent, it has a nice ability sheer force and okay movepool. blaziken: speed boost got it banned for several generations. mega evolution sceptile: mega evolution(if only its movepool was compatible with its stats). swampert: has been in OU in gen 3. great typying. good movepool. empoleon: used to be in OU, has a niche in gen 9. okay movepool. great typying. infernape: used to be in OU. great movepool. torterra: knows shell smash. it has okay typying. serperior: its contrary ability combined with access to leaf storm is busted. samurott: its hisuian form is amazing. grenninja: great signature move. alternate form. amazing ability. got banned in gen 6 OU. delphox: unique typying. okay stats okay movepool. chessnaught: niche in OU. okay movepool. not terrible stats. incineroar: one of the best in doubles. unique typying. z-move primarina: good in gen 9 OU. z-move unique typying. decent movepool decidueye: z-move unique typying rillaboom: gigantamax good in OU nice gimmick with grassy surge + grassy glide cinderace: got banned in gen 8. its hidden ability got nerfed. gigantamax. inteleon: gigantamax. okay stats and movepool. meowscarada: success in OU. good hidden ability. good movepool. quaquaval: used to be in OU. great gimmick with moxie+ aqua step good stats. skelledigre: great ability good stats has the good move torch song. has a niche in ubers has been in OU and still has a niche. what does emboar have? nothing.
Finally justice for Meganium, thank you Jimothy cool. As head of the Meganium cult, I assure you that you will be spared from our wrath when the time comes.
I think the combination of Chikorita being the most difficult start in Johto and it being underwhelming when it's fully evolved is why it receives so much hate.
@jaide1312She serves as the team's support instead of destroying everything in her walk, and that's honestly so cool! She's a nice, peaceful dinosaur that protects your team from damages and status.
When I was a child, some kid at my summer camp convinced me that Chikorita could learn fly if you didn't evolve it by the time you hit Cianwood. This made sense to my child brain, as clearly Chikorita's little leaf had the capacity to turn into a helicopter propeller. I deleted my save to get this rare elusive flying bean. Mh disappointment upon realizing the truth was immeasurable, but I had still grown very attatched to the little guy. Now, Chikorita is my go to starter for Gen 2 and I have loved it ever since.
They should make a regional Meganium that's insanely overpowered. Like an incredibly defensive grass-steel special attacker with flash fire as it's hidden ability. Seems like something GameFreak would do at least.
Everyone talks about Muk Monday, but what about Meganium Monday :'( This poor happy dinosaur needs some love. I hope it gets its own Muk moment one day, even though this hope is in vain.
What gets me about Meganium is how it’s emblematic of something I took for granted for a very, very long time, that being the importance of defensive Grass-Types and the ability to control the pace of the game. During the 2020s (that sounds so weird to say), Meganium’s only gone up in my rankings where during the 2010s Feraligatr was far and away my favorite Johto starter.
While Generation 6 introduced Mega Evolutions, it also introduced Mega Devolutions as well. Thanks to this mechanic change, Meganium gained the ability to Mega-Devolve to Nium.
Meganium is still one of my favorite Grass type Pokémon from gen 2. I really like just how simple but pleasant its design is. It isn't complicated but it is immediately recognizable to most players even if chances are you will never find a trainer or player use one. I hope it gets some love in Pokémon Legends Z-A because it along with how the anime had Chikorita and Bayleef really made me quite like the characters. It is just a very endearing Pokemon to see and listen to. I think the reason why so many people dislike Meganium is because of how if you picked Totodile, as you would, Bayleef would always give you trouble but after that battle, it never really keeps the threat of razor leaf. I love it quite a lot and hope more people find appreciation for it.
My very first game was Silver as a kid, so Meganium was my very first starter and forever has a place in my heart. What a legend. What a terrible legend Glad there were niches for it
Used to dislike Meganium but then I used it on a HG playthrough, made it so It learn leech seed with a sunflora and single handenly hold itself agaisnt Lance and Light screen + reflect really put it into work and my entire team was knock out, except our friendly green dinossaur and won. Meganium is now my fav starter.
A lot of people say that Chikorita is really bad in Johto, but I've also experienced how that's not really true. It's an amazing support tank that can easily take a super effective hit or two and set up what you need for your main attacker of the team. It IS a very unintuitive Pokémon to use when you're a dumb kid who only sees value in moves that deal damage, though. (And I'm not saying this to insult anybody. We ALL went through this dumb kid phase)
If you think about how gen 1 worked, meganium would have been great with a single special stat, a high crit ratio razor leaf with good speed, body slam learned via level up, synthesis for healing, and no psychic weakness. It was probably designed early and suffered due to conversion to gen 2 systems.
I think it'd need Sleep Powder to compete with Victreebell and Eggy. In general being a Grass starter without a sleep move (besides Grass Whistle I guess) is one of Meganium's biggest problems IMO. If it had that, its natural bulk would be way more impressive.
I always picked the grass starter growing up and loved Meganium. Fun dinosaur thing with pretty flower necklace. Simple, functional design with a recognizable silhouette. Good Pokemon
i sincerely hope the pokemon Meganium will rise to new heights with the upcoming generation 10 pokemon games. Personally i cannot wait to unleash Mega-Meganiums Megakick onto the battlefield.
Meganium has always been a favourite of mine. I like it is a defensive pokemon, even if it doesnt excel at the role. It just, fits nicely in a way that i enjoy
Charizard in gen 10 when Meganium receives a new form instead of him: "Look what happened because of what you did, what It lead to, there are are riots out there! Flygon is in critical conditions and you're laughing! My potential new form was killed because of what you did!" Meganium: " How about a joke Charizard : What happens when you cross an extremely underpowered mono grass type starter with a society that abandons it and claims it's ZU trash?! You get what you f****** deserve!" *MEGA EVOLVES*
The most overhated starter is Charizard, and it's not even close. You can't even sit down to eat a sandwich without someone coming out of the woodwork to complain about Charizard being "overexposed"
Giving it Flower Veil would already be much better - blanket status and stat drop immunity to you and your grass-type partners in doubles. Right now, only fairy types have it, so being the only grass type with that ability would be a significant niche.
Some of Meganium's reputation must come from the fact that, while it has a competitive niche in Gen 2, it's much less useful than Feraligatr or Typhlosion in a single-player run.
I think a lot of people got a bad first impression of meganium because people expect starters to be their main pokemon in single player. Offensive play is much better in single player, and stall feels boring when your opponent isn’t trying to play around it. Sure it has a good defensive movepool, but it’s hard to be excited for a starter when one of its best moves is reflect.
Meganium rules, thank you for making a video giving Meganium some love. Genuinely my favorite starter, hard mode for Crystal, and I love its design (anything thats a soft dinosaur in style I love)
Meganium should get a Grass-type Earthquake that has a 50% chance to inflict Leech Seed on the opponent. And its BST should go from 525 to 535 by giving it +10 in HP.
So other than the common request of giving Meganium the fairy typing, i think it should get a signature move (along with all the other startes bc wtf) that heals itself & all party pokemon by 1/3 of their hp, call it Blossoming Health. I think it fits in thematically of what meganium is supposed to be, a friendly healer typa pokemon without making it broken. If you want to make it broken tho, give it that with the triage ability.. did i cook yall 😩😩😩
Meganium reminds me a lot of the character Sakura, and her relationship w Naruto and Sasuke (Feraligatr and Typhlosion). At the start, she definitely has some good capabilities, but as the story progresses, she is kind of left behind by her 2 friends. Meganium just couldn’t keep up w Typh and Gatr
My biggest gripe with Meganium is the design. Bayleef was so cool. One of the best designed middle starters. But Meganium's bald head and bland flower ruff are just.....meh. I honestly feel like Tropius was like one of the other options for Bayleef's evolution (or maybe an after the fact redesign put into a new pokemon), and would have been a way better option. Maybe if there was more detail in the flower, like a cattleya orchid or a gloriosa lily then it would have been better, but the flat amaryllis-like flower being the only visual interest on Meganium makes it fall flat, especially with the color they used.

Except for one… We don’t mention the rotund armadillo’s name

I really like Meganiums design. The changes radical red made to Meganium, giving it fairy type and triage, made it really powerful.
Based
Inteleon is EASILY the ugliest starter design and Gen 8 starters overall are my least favorite batch. Rillaboom saves it because funny monkey but even then I feel like the in-game model sucks
I'm probably one of the only 100 people who likes Inteleon...I just like lizards. The shooting water from fingers is pretty cool too
The Gen 8 starters demonstrate the "new Pokemon are too humanoid" criticism pretty well.
Meganium: Absolutely unremarkable stats and move pool
Blastoise: Gets shell smash and water spout
Meganium has such a cool design though, I love Meganium
I don't quite understand what you're comparing but somehow I agree
@@OcRIPS He made the point that Blastoise and Meganium was comparable, whilst ignoring the fact that blastoise gets shell smash and water spout and a mega
I love meganium because I think dinosaurs are cool and flowers are pretty.
same
I hate how accurate it is to say that just making a Pokémon’s neck longer is part of the play book at this point 😆
Meganium is a beautiful flower dinosaur -- it just so happened that it grew unlucky as the generations went by.
I don't know if I would label emboar as "the worst" starter, but I would certainly label it as "the most forgetable".
This thing has NOTHING that makes it interesting.
- it does not have a mega evolution like the gen 1 and gen 3 starters.
-it did not get its own z-crystal
-its typying is not original for a starter
-it does not have any regional forms
-its stats are trash (Its speed is not fast enough to outrun anything and not slow enough to abuse trick room, the defences aren't high enough to make up for its low speed)
-it's movepool isn't doing it any favours
-it's hidden ability is totally lame.
-it has never had any success in OU.even as a gimmicky niche.
-it didn't get a gigantamax
It has nothing that makes it fun to use.
ALL the other starters have SOMETHING going for them, emboar has nothing.
Worth pointing out emboar was the 3rd fire/fighting starter in a row, which compounds with it's other lack of interesting points, effectively being the start of people being sick of the fire/fighting starter "trend"
Nah alot of these are just flat out wrong, you're just a hater
"Doesnt have a mega evolution" yeah 70% of starters don't, how tf is that an emboar problem
"Didn't get its own Z crystal"
Brother, less than 20 pokemon in total got a unique z-move, again, how is that an emboar problem???????
"Doesnt have regional form" just give it time man, the only starters to get regional forms as of yet are the 3 in PLA, goddamn man
"Stats are trash" Base 100+ mixed attacking stats and high hp pool would like to have a word with you
"Bad movepool" Said about the starter that probably has the most diverse offensive movepool
What other fire type off the top of your head learns scald?
"Hidden ability is lame" Emboars flare blitz already hits like a truck, and having an extra 30% boost makes it even better, not to me tion it helps wild charge and head smash, which are both good, relavant coverage options for the boar, so its not a one trick pony ability
"Nothing that makes it fun to use"
Thats just subjective
You claim emboar has nothing going for them, but I could probably use any of your "points" against most starter, and it wouldn't be right there either
the world if emboar was fire/ground: (it wouldn't have changed much but it would have been cool)
@usernametaken017 I still think fighting type emboar is cool, but thats valid
@@leviistired3621 I think that you missed my point.
maybe if my fault for not expressing it properly:
emboar has every single one of the flaws I mentioned.
the other starters have some of them but not all of them.
also a friendly reminder that my points were about being "memorable".
all the other starters have something making them even a little memorable.

What a way to celebrate Meganium Month! Thank you, Jim!
Finally justice for Meganium, thank you Jimothy cool. As head of the Meganium cult, I assure you that you will be spared from our wrath when the time comes.
Meganium has always been my favorite gen 2 starter design wise. Batleef is one of my favorite mons in general
I think the combination of Chikorita being the most difficult start in Johto and it being underwhelming when it's fully evolved is why it receives so much hate.
I really like it for that since I tend to use pretty weak pokemon on my team. It means my starter isn't overshadowing my other pokemon.
@jaide1312She serves as the team's support instead of destroying everything in her walk, and that's honestly so cool! She's a nice, peaceful dinosaur that protects your team from damages and status.
7:50 YOOOO I'M IN THE VIDEO, thank you for that Jim❤
When I was a child, some kid at my summer camp convinced me that Chikorita could learn fly if you didn't evolve it by the time you hit Cianwood.
This made sense to my child brain, as clearly Chikorita's little leaf had the capacity to turn into a helicopter propeller. I deleted my save to get this rare elusive flying bean.
Mh disappointment upon realizing the truth was immeasurable, but I had still grown very attatched to the little guy. Now, Chikorita is my go to starter for Gen 2 and I have loved it ever since.
the intelion shade is crazy
They should make a regional Meganium that's insanely overpowered. Like an incredibly defensive grass-steel special attacker with flash fire as it's hidden ability. Seems like something GameFreak would do at least.
1:11 “While Meganium is pointed and laughed at like a *freak* ” I’m dying 😂💀
🤣🤣🤣🤣
i literally come here to hear him talk absolute shit😂 dudes wording is insane
Let's not slander the name of Inteleon to artificially boost up Meganium's social status...
I am 110% convinced that someone at GF has this unnatural hatred towards Megamium and Flygon to screw both of them over generation after generation.
I think it’s more likely they have no one fighting for them at game freak whereas other weird mons do.
holy crap, jim brought up the johto starters not getting megas just as I started typing about it
Everyone talks about Muk Monday, but what about Meganium Monday :'( This poor happy dinosaur needs some love. I hope it gets its own Muk moment one day, even though this hope is in vain.
Is Meganium joining the horse council?
What gets me about Meganium is how it’s emblematic of something I took for granted for a very, very long time, that being the importance of defensive Grass-Types and the ability to control the pace of the game. During the 2020s (that sounds so weird to say), Meganium’s only gone up in my rankings where during the 2010s Feraligatr was far and away my favorite Johto starter.
Meganium peaked in New Pokémon Snap. There’s a gigantic glowing meganium for you to take pictures of

What a terrible legend
Glad there were niches for it
i can confirm my first impression of inteleon was to scream and cry in fear
Bayleef was just better designed and like, if you disappointed visually when your starter evolved from its 2nd evolution…
13:59 you back OFF of my james bond cosplayer right now, JIMOTHY.
Shoutout to Meganium for being the first ever mega-evolution
The real tragedy, is that after all this time meganium still has yet to be reunited with his childhood friend horsea
Very nice of you to our iconic Dino friend to speak up in this echo chamber of negativity towards it!
I feel bad for the Chikorita line, especially Meganium. Its life has been terrible due to Game Freak and The Pokemon Conpany screwing it over.
I love Meganium! I'll go to bat for the poor thing, it deserves better.
They should just suck it up and replace the poor thing’s hidden ability with Harvest
Mega Meganium's sprite would just be Meganium's head poking through the clouds. Mega long neck
Meganium was my first ever starter :)
I still love them even though they're bad
You don't like Meganium because it's weak I don't like Meganium because I like Bayleefs design better we are not the same.
I think meganium looks like it would be nice to hug
If you think about how gen 1 worked, meganium would have been great with a single special stat, a high crit ratio razor leaf with good speed, body slam learned via level up, synthesis for healing, and no psychic weakness. It was probably designed early and suffered due to conversion to gen 2 systems.
I think it'd need Sleep Powder to compete with Victreebell and Eggy. In general being a Grass starter without a sleep move (besides Grass Whistle I guess) is one of Meganium's biggest problems IMO. If it had that, its natural bulk would be way more impressive.
I was gonna go to work today but I decided to take a sip of water for everytime Jim says "folks" and now I'm drunk.
Meganium isn't even the worst starter story-wise. Chesnaught has less good matchups against mandatory fights
Meganium is nice to use in a casual run of Gen 2 as a support wall. It's nice for setting up screens.
My potential new form was killed because of what you did!"
Meganium: " How about a joke Charizard : What happens when you cross an extremely underpowered mono grass type starter with a society that abandons it and claims it's ZU trash?! You get what you f****** deserve!" *MEGA EVOLVES*
"Give it a longer neck, it's a common play in their playbook" 😂😂
Trueeee
All Johto starters need some kind of buff, whether it be to their stats, movepool, or abilities.
I loved transferring my Meganium with Frenzy Plant from HG to Battle Revolution. It was so good seeing it in 3D modeling.
It's one of the best designed grass Pokemon, I love it for that simple reason
Leech Seed, Knock off, Giga Drain, Aromatherapy Meganium is fairly usable in modern gens. bulky grass with that set has a niche
Muk Monday 🚫
Meganium Monday ✅
The most overhated starter is Charizard, and it's not even close. You can't even sit down to eat a sandwich without someone coming out of the woodwork to complain about Charizard being "overexposed"
12:15 "Give it a longer kneck!"
Why was he so aggressive folks😂
Change its typing to Grass/Fairy, Give it thick fat as a hidden ability, and possibly even give it access to spore.
Brother wants meganium in OU so bad😂
Gen 2 is just underwhelming I like fraligator but gen 2 really suffers from game freak thinking it would be the last game
Giving it Flower Veil would already be much better - blanket status and stat drop immunity to you and your grass-type partners in doubles. Right now, only fairy types have it, so being the only grass type with that ability would be a significant niche.
“Hmm, I’d like to look in the team builder to find a powerful mega to build my team around”
The ever helpful meganium:
Some of Meganium's reputation must come from the fact that, while it has a competitive niche in Gen 2, it's much less useful than Feraligatr or Typhlosion in a single-player run.
I think a lot of people got a bad first impression of meganium because people expect starters to be their main pokemon in single player. Offensive play is much better in single player, and stall feels boring when your opponent isn’t trying to play around it. Sure it has a good defensive movepool, but it’s hard to be excited for a starter when one of its best moves is reflect.
''while Meganium is pointed and laughed at like a freak'' You are so funny man, never change
Now that you've pointed it out, Pokemon has indeed used the "give it a longer neck" card a few times
This poor dude should have been given the fairy type years ago.
Chikorita was my first starter, all the way back in 2003 when I was six years old. Plus, I used to use it in GSC OU. I can never hate it.
Just give it Scald, Knockoff and Serene Grace
Meganium should’ve gotten an exclusive Z Crystal in Gen 7 that also lets it mega evolve, just so we could have the Megameganiumium Z
