I have no problem with a Mustang being electric. My problem is calling a four-door SUV a Mustang.
Absolutely agree
That's what kills it for me. Plus, this thing is too similar to the body Tesla uses and I think we've all seen enough of those.
Well we Mopar guys had to suffer through 4cyl. Mitsus called Challenger and 2.2 Turbos called Charger; (I won't even go into the Volare Road Runner) and then still today an ancient Benz E Class 4 door called a Charger - and you're squawking????? I'd be more pissed this is a Mexican dog if I were you. 🇺🇸
it's their car. they can call it whatever they like. lol
I have a problem with Mustangs being electric. I have issues with EV garbage in general.
I love that when Jay said he doesn’t like fake engine noises that electric vehicles make, the guy went right to the screen to turn off “propulsion sounds” 🤣🤣
Saw that too
I'm glad he said it. Now companies will think twice about adding it. Jay is a big hitter in the auto world.
I like it alot. Porsche did the sound the right way in tycan.
It's entirely optional and easy to switch that's the good part.
Ford does this on the V6 Raptor. Fake exhaust sounds through the speakers.
My first car was a 67 Mustang. Always liked the Mustang brand, and I don’t car that they added a different model to the Mustang line. I ordered the MME GTPE last year and have been driving it daily since October 2021. It is amazing. The acceleration from the torque still puts a smile on my face every time. The smooth quiet ride and technology make it a great vehicle for commuting. And as Jay said, zero maintenance (other than tires). I never have to stop at a gas station to refuel. I just plug it in in the garage about 2x a week and charge while I sleep. To me it’s a great combination of performance, style, convenience, economy. And for all you gearheads, which I am, I also have a 68 Camaro convertible in the garage, just so you know I’m not an anti-ICE guy.
thank you for giving the mach-e a chance and sharing your good experience with this car. everyone seems to shutting this car out because it’s mustang that’s electric and an suv
So histoically the Mustang is notoriously kind of a crappy built car, how do you feel the Mach e is built on a scale of one to ten?
What the hell is a MMEGTPE........Is that a vitamin or something from the Pharmacy..???....Paul
Great reply! I also own a 2023 Mach E GT PE and I absolutely love it. Love the Horsepower and torque combo.
my 2021 Mach e is such a joy to drive !
I love that Jay has not lost his sense of reality that most us common people that watch these videos weekly have. Point being just the simple things Jay brings up about something costing $200. To most working class people that’s an expense we wouldn’t want. Jay still understands that even though he obviously isn’t poor by any means lol. Thank you Jay for bringing these videos to us. I have been watching them for years and love them!
Jay is my template for honesty.
Nice engines to show off. No thanks. Pieces of Sht when they need new batteries
In this particular review, he seemed more old fuddy wishing for the old days ,,, side note Ford finally comes out with the performance version and it's horses are half of what they should have been 😑
Me too I love the show
@@DaveyboyJonez don't know about all of them, but tesla's are designed to be million mile cars. Much of them are way overbuilt. Batts are lasting 200,000 and 300,000 miles in them. I've kept a car that long, though I guess some folks do.
If I bought one of these, the first thing I would do would be to remove the Mustang badges. It is a 5 door crossover. Electric or not, it is not a Mustang. Could have just called it the Mach-E.
lol
Thunderbolt is a better name with Ford heritage.
Says the guy that will never own one.
You do realize dodge darts were 2 door muscle cars then came back as a little 4 banger 4 door coupe with plastic bubbles for fenders? Even with ford. Have you seen what the thunderbird went through? Times change. You can too. Boomer.
@@stgeorge5862 Darts were economy cars. You could get a trim with a decent engine and suspension, but for every 340 GT that was made, they sold 20 slant-sixes and 318s

Kudos to Dave for being able to call this thing a Mustang that many times with a straight face. He's a real company man through and through.
I will never call it a mustang!!
@KingLouisV Yup, and that's why @1:53 he couldn't even put a number to it - "...now that we've sold, so many of them..." LOL!
I love that Ford is furthering the BEV philosophy even if it's by chasing Tesla taillights down the road, but the goof that authorized naming this thing "Mustang" should never be allowed to brand anything.
I know. Hard to watch. Got to keep the climate grift going.
He deserves a award. He knows how cringe it is to try and call it a mustang.
Really too bad they've stopped providing spare tires. I guess new car owners will have to buy run-flats instead of those sporty things. Jay made a great point about getting a new tire and waiting for three days...
I don’t know how Ford does it. My electric car has roadside assistance. Which means in 30 minutes a guy pulls up with my tire for my car. He puts it on. He takes my wheel to the service center. The next day I go there, and my tire is fixed on my wheel.
@@garywiseman5080 that wouldn't be the case on every road. If you are on a camping trip with no cell phone signal, you are screwed.
We'll just mount them on the "frunk", like an old-school Land Rover. That'll be good for aerodynamics.
I had two flats in one month in my Shelby and I had to wait about 7’days each time to get a replacement tire. I almost thought about buying a spare but it cost like 500 dollars
I remember BMW removing the spare tires from their cars starting way back when and pushing the runflat tires as the answer. Owners hated the early runflats as they were so stiff and harsh riding.
They should have just called it the Mach E it would have sold just as well . There was no real reason other than marketing to call it a Mustang
Yep, agree. It's outselling the regular Mustang because it's an SUV, not a Mustang. SUVs are WAY more desirable for everyday use and to top it off, because it's electric, it gets a huge write off to boot.
Probably would have sold more
Same thoughts!
@@brandonnixon7105 absolutely they were not SUVs
They should have just called it the Thunderbird... The T-Bird has always changed from a two door convertible to a boat and back again.. Besides, Thunderbird has Thunder in it.. very "Electric" sounding.
impressive how Leno is able to just drill down to the essence of what electrification means for cars
Jay Leno: The Great American Car Story Teller. Thanks for having Dave again.
They should have revived "Thunderbird" for this. Makes too much sense to me.
I actually think that's a good idea!
Ford Maverick is a truck now 😂..
Ford “thunderbolt” would have been nice too
"We got a lot of heat that this was not a Mustang, but that's dying down now." No, you're just ignoring it.
And its tough to ignore "ugly suv-ish".
Well its not like they are going to change the name. People are buying these things up so they have no reason to.
FUGLY.
it has been dying down tbh. i see them in a lot of places, and a lot of people who are mustang owners and enthusiasts while the they don’t love it they’re definitely not as mad as they were.
It's not a mustang. It's a fking abomination. Ford should be completely ashamed of themselves.
I never thought i would see a hatchback, 4 door, suv, mustang 🤨😵💫🤯
These two are by far the best combination they both are entertaining and knowledgeable!
Accept the fact they both are lying about talking about a mustang.
The look on the guy's face after Jay says that 27:59 😂😂😂 Then frantically looking through the settings to turn it off.
LOL
I’m glad someone else noticed that lmao the look of sheer panic
I can appreciate the technology. I can appreciate that this is an SUV. An advanced SUV. But it's not a Mustang. It doesn't look like a Mustang. It looks like something a soccer mom might drive. But it doesn't even resemble a Mustang. At least for the most part when changed were made to the Corvette it still resembled a Corvette. Same thing with the dodge charger. It doesn't look like the classic charger. And it's a 4 door! Dame thing with this "Mustang". It's a 4 door SUV.
It just makes Ford look like they were DESPERATE for this car to attract attention, and the only way they could think of was to re-appropriate the name of their 'sportscar'...
Agreed, it's probably a great car, but I just hope this doesn't 'backfire' and end up DILLUTING the Mustang badge?
When you tell people you have a 'Mustang', will they assume you have a 5.0L 2 door sportscar, or think that you own this electric SUV?
@@StreetPreacherr Dude. The only mustang that's faster is the $100,000+ GT500. It's an SUV, but it is NOT slow.

From the front, It resembles a Mustang to me. And if FORD calls it a Mustang, guess what? it's a Mustang!! Get over it, people. it's not that big of a deal.
I would have chosen - Galaxy per Galax-E?
I have blizzaks for the winter on my GT PE. It's quite the sled! The range definitely suffers but it handles like a dream during Michigan winters!
This is only called a “Mustang” because they realised that nobody would pay these prices for a Ford badged crossover.
FUD motor will be BANKRUPT in 2023.
And...that's why you have a marketing department. To figure these things out and make money. So Mustang it is.

I’m the same age, and will take the additional step in saying I prefer a manual transmission.. but I 100% agree with everything you said.. think the sweet spot is about 2008 which is right about when they added the zoomer features
The sweet spot is any 2011-2014 S197. New engines (5.0, 3.7) and 6 speed transmissions, still analog enough to feel old school, but not so much a pain to daily.
"no knob to change gears" you like your gear stick with no knob?

Great show! Love Jay’s sense of humor.
I watched this video when it first came out. At the time, I was looking into replacing an aging Chevy Malibu hybrid after five years, 100,000 miles, and a head gasket leak. I tested the Mach-e, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model Y, and VW id.4 electric cars. I chose this one. Though I did not get the GT. Good review. I love Jay Leno's garage. Now need to watch the one with the Corvair again.

Man Dave Pericak just gives me that used car salesman vibe. If he told me water was wet I'd have to think about it before I believed him.
It's because he hates the car but has to feed his children.
I was thinking the same thing!
Yeah, I was about to moan about them having got a marketing guy on to do the show. Then I looked him up and realised he's not the marketing guy.
He gives me the same vibe. I much prefer the way Franz von Holzhausen comes across (shame the wayTesla service is so bad though).
Yes. Every sentence he utters, he’s looking for an opportunity to sell something.
Surprised that Jay reads so many of cards/letters sent to him. With the stand up shows and constantly working on his many cars, his schedule must be full. I’ve noticed that with so many interviews and conversations there are times that Jay repeats comments that are relevant when discussing details about features. We get references to his 7 litre Ford Galaxy and the cold air box, I think I’ve heard it at least 4 times when discussing air intakes in general. Keep it going Jay, I love the coverage!!
Appreciate how Jay was willing to describe things he didn't like, but did it in a kindly manner. E.g., the lack of a spare tire. The need to look down at the gearshift knob (and screen) rather than grabbing a big shifter. The cues to gas powered cars that don't make sense for electric (but are probably needed to coax folks to accept it).
Re: the pointless front grille, one other possibility: the grille has always been a big part of the "face" of a car. Maybe even the most distinctive part. So, what happens if it only has "eyes," no "mouth"? Especially in these days when huge mouths are the fashion. Can they make that look good?
An idea for the frunk: make a gas generator, or extra battery pack, that can drop into that space for long distance driving. True it would add a lot of weight and probably make a mess out of driving dynamics, but might be worth it if it increases range by at least 100 miles.

Jay.. Talking about car speeds from 0 to 60 I remember an article from either road and track or car and driver from 1988 in which the editor firmly believed cars would never make it to under 5 seconds 0 to 60. I remember counting out in my head from 0 to 4 and thinking how could a car ever go that fast, this guy must be right, LOL
I love all the automobile history that Jay injects into these conversations. Very informative and entertaining!
I can’t imagine these things at car shows forty years from now with the hoods propped - engine bays from the past are a big part of the interest in vehicles- cars are becoming nothing more than just utility
Yeah, they're about as interesting as fridges or washing machines. I cannot understand, for example how folks get so excited about new cell phones. it's different with internal combustion powered cars.

Really good review. I'm 55 and getting my first Mustang in a few months. It's the I.C.E. version of the GT. I'm not ready to jump on the E-revolution for a variety of reasons. While I don't really mind that Ford has an E-version of a Mustang, I'm confused of an SUV version, if that makes sense. While there's a lot of good to say about progress, there's also a lot to say about those things that people can make and feel. Gone will be the days of working on your own car. While I know that many people will gravitate to this new generation, I'm still liking when people say that their Mustang (or whatever ICE car they have) is 'built, not bought." Now, the car is plugged it into a computer/charger, hit the 'enter' button and complete an upgrade. I'm probably romanticizing too much. Thanks, Jay and Ford-guy.
Keep your ICE forever. Ford has yet to make a mustang EV. But what they did make was a Ford Escape EV. And called it a mustang. Mustangs as everyone knows is not a suv. Does not have 4 doors. Everything about calling the Mach E a mustang is a joke and is all about marketing.

All things aside, the numbered key pad on the door is an awesome feature and oddly enough the reason I haven't traded in an old fusion that I have. I'm glad they mentioned that their customers love that feature, because I certainly do. It's great, like he said to go to the beach, or out to golf, or for a run or mountain bike ride and not have to worry about your damn key. Also great when you have to leave the car at an airport.
That keypad has been around on the Fords since the '80s
Just awesome thanks for the review!!
I want to drive to NJ from NM in 3 days, not 4 (or longer). I don't want to sit idle while my car recharges. Nothing like getting 500 miles (or more) on a tank of gas, 10 minute fill up, and back on the road.

Gas car owners spend 9 hours a year fueling their cars. EV owners plus the car in when they go to bed.
Road trips are a blast in EVs. Fuel costs 75% less, and 20 minutes gives me enough charge to get me to my next bio break. Which, sadly, seems to take the whole 20 minutes, when you add in picking up a drink and a snack!

@@Neojhun 48 hours to recharge from NY to CA? Or are you stopping the clock during the recharge? Because you certainly can't sleep 3 times a day while you recharge.
If they just called it a Mach E they would have had no pushback and probably sold just as well
My thoughts exactly.
Not a chance. People would look at it as a Ford compliance car. Ford knew they had to have recognition so they used the Mustang badge to get it.
Saw my first one at a winery at the north end of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. It looked really good and was wearing Connecticut plates. Saw my second one at the Ford display at the Woodward Cruise event this year. I emphatically exclaimed that the United States is V8 country and that the V8 powers America on it's highways and bi-ways. - After thinking about this thing for a while, and hearing the current sales figures, this car will probably be a big go for Ford and the electric car segment. Time will tell. I will say, the experience of driving a reworked Mustang GT is like no other and puts a big smile on everyone in the car during those fun moments. Both are unique! G.

24:00-If I'm not mistaken, the late Sixties Ford Thunderbird had something like that as well. As for the Mustang Mach-E, one might consider that Porsche was largely known for its two-door roadsters until it started coming out with crossovers some years back. PS: I've seen them in person in Massachusetts, and they look great!!!
Very nice informative video, Jay. Thanks. BTW, you may have already implied it earlier in this video, but I suspect one of the reasons Ford chose to name it a Mustang was to also show Ford's commitment to the new EV. Quite possibly, if they named it anything else, many might have considered it more of a joke. Naming it a Mustang showed their followers that Ford is dead serious about their commitment to the technology and to this model in particular. And so it seems. Risky? Apparently not from Ford's perspective. At least not anymore. :) Thanks again. I'm awaiting delivery of my 2nd Mach E Gt which should arrive in 1 week.
putting the Mustang name on a crossover or SUV is about the most disrespectful thing you can do to the Mustang brand. Ford ether needs to put this technology in a coupe or they just need to stop making Mustangs.

Electric vehicles will not work in the large rural states. Until they are able to go 500+ miles in the winter, they will always be urban vehicles. Light trucks/SUVs that have only 100 mile ranges towing a camper in the winter is just not going to replace ICE light trucks. Most of the places we go camping in Oregon do not have charging stations
There are always exceptions. Most people even in rural america this will do most of the driving perfectly.
Pointless, BEVs do not need to cover every use case. If you need more than 400 Miles don't bother with BEVs. There is not even enough Production Capacity for people who only need 400 miles or less. I live in freaking Australia, I would never use a BEV to go into The OutBack. But I would not use a freaking Expedition 4x4 to commute in our megacities. Different tools for different jobs.
How many ICE vehicles can go 500 miles in the winter? Very few. As for electric vehicles that can go 500 miles (although maybe not in winter), there is already one on the market. The Lucid Air has been tested in the real world as being capable of going 500 miles at 70 MPH on the highway, and probably farther at lower speeds.
For everyone that drives 500+ miles a day, and never gets near a highway, this won’t work. That currently rules out Alaska, South America, Africa, and Australia, if you drive 500+ miles per day.
Jay, at the end, says, "You could go half a million miles in one of these" - only if you pay to renew the batteries a few times I think.
Brakes and oil changes are cheap. Batteries are a big ticket item.
Exactly. You think. Do the research
@@332ARA Tesla batteries warranty is for 100k miles. How long is your gas motor warranty?
@@ismaelcarrillo3956 I have two cars, both twenty + years old. My problem with some electric cars is that when the battery needs replacing - owners won't, because the cost of the new battery will be more than the car is worth - therefore what in the UK insurers would call a 'write-off'. If this proves to be true in the future, then electric cars will not last as long on the road as petrol / diesel cars. You could have a situation where in the lifetime of a petrol/ diesel car, two or three electric cars have to be made - therefore overall the total environmental issues caused per each electric car built could be more than per petrol/ diesel car.
I may be proven wrong, but I don't like the way we are all being encouraged to dash headlong towards electric cars - after all this is what happened with diesel cars - and look how that turned out! I have nothing against electric cars, but believe we should still keep our eyes open on other alternatives - fuel cell, bio-fuel and hydrogen cars for example.
@@ismaelcarrillo3956 Most manufacturers have power train warranties of 80,000-100,000 miles…. Some more. Do the research!
At 29:19, I see the Apple Watch ringing and everything in every fiber of my being just wants to say "do you need to get that?" LOL
i still love the keypad on the door feature.
Does anyone think that looks like a Mustang?
It appears to be a slim cross-over.
Nah crap who really honestly wants this generic a$$ ish all based on something they are trying to push down your throat nah im good plus all the unnecessary tech that comes with it whos gonna control the updates you or ford who will be able to ultimately turn it off at will
Got nothing against electric cars but this is wrong in every way. This is no mustang it is a 4 door family car. Would really like to see more 2 door coupes. Is there any nice sports cars left today?

Jay…all this talk of motors/engines…
I had a flight instructor tell me:
A motor has two outputs…heat and torque
A engine has three outputs…heat…torque and exhaust…
(Of course in both…RPM is the result of torque)
23:23 that „Bangs and Olsen“ cracked me up 😅
Agreed...he's totally out of touch with this detail. 😆
Thank you Jay for all your hard work !
He is a national treasure!
Your annoying as your channel.
You raised a very interesting point about lack of wear and tear and maintenance etc
So if you get the chance Jay, next time are they thinking about battery swaps in say 10 or 15 years
Or if battery cell technology moves on, can you upgrade and improve power and range and then motor tech moves on too ?
Yes, I agree. The cost of replacing the battery or even the motor. People don’t think of that. Ironically, a Mercedes’ hybrid owner has to replace the battery in his Mercedes’ and the cost is 20 000$ and the vehicle isn’t worth that.
Tesla batteries are rated for 1 million miles. So, you’re more likely to buy a new car before you replace the battery.
@@prodantech
Can you prove that
@@pugnos1Edit! I was replying to the wrong comment. Haha. The million mile battery spec is determined by accelerated lab testing. I suppose we’ll see how that goes in real life. Even if we get half of that, then that would be pretty amazing. There have been some older Model S’s with newer battery tech that have crossed the half million mile mark.
@@prodantech making stuff up is fun!
Solar panel on the car would be badass I’d just drive all day on a sunny day😎 wonder if they could use wind to generate more power too?
Jay is spot on about the shifter. There's such a thing as too much tech--bring back the old shifter you can use by feel.
I can promise that things on that car will wear out, from suspension to sensors to circuit boards, switches, cameras, solenoids, relays and giros...I could go on and on and it won't be cheap to fix.
They actually do need maintenance. Car and Driver found EV maintenance to be just as expensive as ICE maintenance.
It's not oil changes but what is does need is more expensive. Different things need routine checks.
Tesla's vehicles been out for 9 uears. No significant problems have come up. And that's 9 year old technology. How much is an engine and transmission after your 36k mile warranty?
"This isn't just some SUV that we've electrified..." What a stupid comment. That's exactly what the Mach-e is. Its an electric 4-door SUV/CUV
Love it!
I recently drove the Mach-e GT performance. the acceleration is insane but so linear that it wasn’t exciting after a while, the brakes are perfect and have a great pedal feel. I didn't find the steering very communicative, the car feels downright heavy in sharp bends. On short bumps I also found the car restless and not very pleasant (seems like a huge challenge to make such a heavy SUV sporty and comfy at the same time). I also found the finish and materials to be substandard. There were quite some squeaks and rattles and the B&O system was a let down. I was impressed with the grip the car has and I thought the “fake engine noise” was nicely done.
Jay talks about going 500K miles and not needing anything. Oh, just a battery pack that will set you back more than a rebuilt trans and a long block. I'm also confused about how Dave can say you never need to change brake fluid. Is there some magic stuff in it? Brake fluid is hygroscopic, except for silicone fluid.
When a switch goes out on a window in 5 years it will be $1000 to fix it. $500 for the switch $500 labor. There’s nothing really to go wrong,,,,,these two are so full of S
It’s not that the life of the brake fluid has increased, it’s that the life of the vehicle decreased 😃
Why did they call it a Mustang? The idea of a SUV Mustang, when the Mustang has always been a sports car since it’s birth.
@Marlina Lovely💛💛 ❤️❤️😘😍
Because Ford and many other major manufacturers no longer produce cars. They only do SUV's & trucks and companies like Honda & Chrysler still make Mini Vans.
I like electric cars and their electromechanical superiority. Having said that, my biggest concerns are end of service life environmental impacts regarding battery material mining practices and disposal methods, coupled with the fact that this country's power generation and grid system is not up to the task of supporting the move to electric vehicles. We're putting the cart before the horse, if you'll pardon the pun. There's also the issues of the government having total control over your vehicle and car theft by hacking. So while I'm hopeful for this shift, I'm also pragmatically skeptical. But thank you Jay for always delivering a stellar presentation!
I love you Jay! U are a true car guy!
He was a car guy until he embraced the Left’s EV trash
Love the channel and show Jay! I'm curious when you will discuss the future of these batteries, how long they'll last (I doubt a 1/2 a million miles), and what will be done to fix, replace, regen. The big issue is, how will thousands will be disposed of.

THERE ARE PLENTY COMPANIES INTO RECYCLING THE BATTERIES...TO MAKE NEW ONES. JAY DOESN'T DEAL WITH SOCIAL ISSUES ON HIS CAR CHANNEL.
@@MICHGO1 There are plenty of companies into it while it's new. Is anyone saying what you do with your car once the batteries are depleted? I was told, it'll last 100,00 miles, after that you'll be done with the car. I have seen bills of $20k to replace a Tesla battery. It doesn't cost $20k to replace a gas engine. Just asking is there a solid plan, or we'll cross that bridge when we get to it...
@@Broncostu 100k miles is the warranty of the batteries. Not the life span. At 100k miles Tesla batteries have shown to have lost 8% of their state of charge. Which means the batteries will outlast the car itself. I'd like to see a gas motor with that kind of performance
That Le Mans win was a seriously impressive achievement. Same goes for the Mustang Mach E's - stunning
so go drive your toaster, and stay off the expressway.
MotorTrend says, "The 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition costs around $70,000, while the 2023 model costs almost $78,000."

Back in the 1970s Yamaha had an advertising campaign declaring that "Someday You'll Own a Yamaha" at the time I was a pretty devoted fan of Suzuki motorcycles and had owned a few Hondas as well so I couldn't imagine owning a Yamaha but sure enough I've now owned 3 Yamahas. I imagine someday I'll own an electric car. I think I'm a little more excited about the day I own an electric car than the first time I owned a Yamaha motorcycle.
Not saying it's a bad vehicle, but it is not a Mustang.
Agreed
Calling a 4 door crossover SUV a "Mustang" is just a straight up middle finger
Perfect for the transgender and can’t define a woman generation. 😂
But a 4 cylinder “Mustang” isn’t? Who makes up the rules on what a Mustang is? Oh that’s right Ford the owners of the name. The MachE GT is faster than 90% of all production mustangs but “it’s not a real Mustang I want the slower one because it’s traditional” SMH

Even my 2004 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Wagon I have to drill out or remove the rivets in order to upgrade/replace the original component sets. Which amazingly enough still all works and none of them are blown. Soon enough I'm replacing them with JL Audio all around. But yeah most newer cars 2 date it's getting harder 2 upgrade or change the sound to your liking. I'm sure those who are determined as I am 2 make an idea happen they will simply cutout and custom fabricate a setup but yeah for the vast majority they want you to use what they give yuh.
