“You got a day date complication. Which is critical on those longer dives.” True words. You better know what day it is in one of those underwater dive bells 🔔
Yes and no. Yes because Seiko has a very wide array of choice. However, it doesn't have everything you need because your needs will have to consider several factors such as affordability, purchasing power, utility, specs offered, etc.
Certina DS Action Diver at 38mm should definitely get a mention. At 38mm, ISO-certified diver, 300m water resistance, Powermatic 80 movement, the watch is absolutely a bliss for small wrist wearers who want a decent Swiss automatic diver at affordable price. I used to own one but I realize it was just a bit too small for my wrist. I wish they could release it at 39-41mm to fit more wrist sizes.
@@benjamintchang3923 the GMT version is incredible. I was very close to pulling the trigger on that one. Unfortunately the long lug-to-lug distance on the GMT version would've dwarfed my skinny wrist.
I love my Q Timex GMT and thoroughly recommend it. I ordered it in the same configuration as in the video almost a year ago and have not had any issues. The 38mm case is a perfect size, is very comfortable on the wrist with the rubber strap and it looks great. I've nicknames it the Vader. The Swiss movement by the way is a Ronda 505.24H.
Normally, (IMO) Tom tends to knock it out of the park and take these "dial" offs no problem. And while he did bring in the most interesting and varying selections, I think Andrew brings it home this time. The Seikos - clear winners but the Rally was very nice. I feel like Andrew took so many Ls he played his selections very safe to get a long sought win. Either that - or I have become a Seiko fanboi.
Gotta give it to Tom this time around, with a more varied collection. My picks would be: Diver: Citizen NY0040 Dress watch: Tissot Le Locle Chronograph: Seagull 1963 GMT: Phoibos Voyager GMT Military watch: Boderry Voyager Let me know what you think 😊
Fantastic as always… and it is impressive how prolific Seiko really is, from these “cheaper” suggestions all the way up to Laurent Ferrier type Credor and beyond… it’s shocking! All great choices and you guys have amazing chemistry in how you do these videos 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Ive been thinking about the seiko blueberry skx gmt and I think youve convinced me now. And the fact you've used the orange one when i have the orange seiko 5 gave me a confidence boost lol.
Aviation cocktail: 2oz gin 3/4oz fresh squeezed lemon juice 1/2oz maraschino liqueur 1/2oz crème de violette Shake with ice, strain into coupe glass, garnish with lemon and/or cherry. Should be a nice light purple color, primarily from the crème de violette.
Well done! The +40 sec/day spec on that Seiko movement swings me to the other side. I know the watch usually does much better, but I have received NOB Seiko running +30 and over, but they have that covered. "It is within specs, mate". Cracking the back voids the warranty and you risk bricking the watch. Seiko, with your pedigree, think of throwing us poor lads a crumb and get that precision down to +20 or even +15. Hopefully the watch will still out perform +20. All IMHO and with a smile of course. I really like the Serica field watch. I may even save up and buy one. You do a fantastic job with this channel and I look forward to the uploads.
Great article, gotta say Seiko are pretty good. The amount of times I've heard reviewers say go for a Hamilton Khaki over the Seiko Field watches if you can afford it, are many. Then in the last week or so, I have heard of 5 anecdotes about how Hamilton Khaki fields fog up as soon as they come anywhere near moisture! Sounds like they have a real issue making water resitant timepieces.
I received a Citizen Pro Diver for Christmas. Eco Drive, Blue Bezel/Dial and Strap. 200m, 43mm size, crown is at 4 o’clock which is really great and the lume is amazing
You guys got me with genuine Timex leather. 🤣🤣 But all being said my grandfather & myself have many others watches like Bulova, Citizen, Seiko etc. But we had never been laid down by a Timex watch and always it's the one that I keep going to all the time. 🐷leather 😂😂
In regard to the SEIKO GMT: This is a diver watch you can't use for diving, an imposter. SEIKO tells us customers "... if you want to have a dive watch with SKX-looks you have to spend more money"
Well a Boldr chrono with a Luminous dial would be super useful at the Bol B'Or which is the oldest endurance race still run today. Started in 1922, factlet of the day.
Seiko without a doubt have something somewhere that should cover all general categories including new ones that we never knew existed. They might even have a piece designed for cave dwellers that uses a sun dial with a little remote LED fire fly to emulate the sun and a built in compass, different hemisphere no problem just flip that firefly. Tom wins this one. All good fun guys. Cheers for sharing.
What about this for the diver: a Smiths Commander by Time factors this is a 38mm 300m diver with a Miyota 9039 movement and its a British company and costs £365.
@khaaaaaaaaaaannn. Dont worry yet, i'm on 16 seiko's 4 kings, 8 grands & 2 lm's & 1regular & 1diver diver & looking for 17 but at least i have it down to a particular model..
6:36 so at this point we have seen 4 watches.. but only two movements ETA 80 series and Seiko 4R … 6:36 let’s see what comes next… 14:09 4R number 3 17:54 4R number 4…and also what I’m wearing right now
I own a mido Ocean Star and it has one of the best, if not THE best, bracelets I’ve ever seen, not just in the $1,000 price range, this could be said compared to watches with much higher prices. Brushed links with dull edges give this premium vibe. The bracelet fits the wrist perfectly and makes the watch quite pleasant to wear without any worries of clipping hair or dangling noise. The diver’s extension is easy to operate with two push release buttons and makes a lot of sense: when extended to the maximum the watch can be easily worn even wearing a thick diving suit.
Hmmm, most of the watches in my collection mainly consists of Seiko tbh, 9 to be exact. Sounds quite a lot to have of one particular brand, but that wont stop me from buying another one. Although some of my Seikos may fall under the same category and style, I believe each one of my seikos looks unique enough to offer me something different to wear.
I really can't get why they declare such bad precision for the Seiko 4R movements, I believe it's because of lack of regulation during assembly and not because of poor movement as one can suppose, because I own quite few of them and, after I regulate them on my timegrapher, they generally are all within +/- 2/4 seconds/day... The 24h useless subdial of the Boldr (and Seiko) chrono is a total deal breaker for me, also the image at 8:31 is false: the 24h subdial can't indicate that with the other hands in those position. I'd rather go for a VRATISLAVIA CONCEPTUM - HERITAGE CHRONO, same price, but with a more "car inspired" dial and a similar movement without stupid 24h subdials.
Got two seikos a king turtle and a pressage cocktail time with champagne diel. Both great watches. The king seiko is fantastic. Got it for same price as normal turtle. Also no need to buy a captain willard if you get itcas the king turtle would be the watch he would her now
Of course there are a lot of Seikos. Not mentioning a bunch of Seikos in a discussion about affordable mechanical watches is like talking about pantry staples and not mentioning salt
I can't decide. I think I might be on Tom's side though. If i was spending around $500 I would have a hard time looking at Seiko unless it was a deal on a willard. Lots of other options out there with good materials and construction. The micros use Seiko movements a lot anyway.
There is a lot of Seiko 5 going on here! Not least Boldr which, in my view, is largely a Seiko 5 clone. If you want a classic field watch I would suggest a CWC. Although I'm not sure they are in the affordable definition, whatever that is.
How could you *not* pick the CWC G10 as a field watch for £230?? It is a true, military-proven field watch issued by the MOD. I love the sarcastic banter on this show. Keep it up!
If I had to do this list it would go like this: Diver: Orient Kamasu Dress Watch: Timex Marlin Chronograph: Seagull GMT: Seiko SRPD GMT Military: Hamilton Khaki Field Very Very Generic i know
When are they going to get it through their thick sculls that the date sitting on the six indice like the Aqua Terra is such a Turn off !!!!! The timex needs a better colour variant but is the best bang for the dollar.
I love affordable chronographs and actually use the complication to time stuff constantly with my Daily Driver being a Junghans Form C. One thing that annoys me to no end though, and it's something clearly visible in your two choices, is the negative impact that Seiko movements have on the chronograph market. I love Seiko and the movements they make are great (both in quality and at a price point) but they do insist on putting a 24 hour subdial, good only for submarine operators and those awaking from a coma, into each and every chronograph movement they offer. Thanks to the fact that Seiko movements are the obvious choice for microbrands and affordable time pieces, combined with Seikos boneheadedness of not just giving us a usable chronograph hour dial, 95% of all chronographs below 500usd and 65% below 1000usd are burdened with a subdial that serves no purpose for the core feature of a chronograph, timing. These subdials also look misplaced and leads to many watches I'd love to own (including the two in the video), simply not being for me. If I want to time only up to 60 minutes, any rotating bezel can serve that purpose. If the Watchfinders team needs a video idea, how about this: The best affordable Chronographs that can time beyond 60 minutes. And manufacturers, please consider Ronda movements. I know they are more expensive, but there are people willing to pay a premium for the ability to actually use their chronographs for some extended time tracking. Lastly, if anyone from Seiko is reading this, please do some research into how many people actually want a 24h dial on a chronograph, especially one that can't even show a second time zone. Maybe I am wrong and there is massive demand for that, but I'd be doubtful.
Yes! It's become a real bugbear of mine too. It annoys me so much that anytime I see a multi sub-dial watch, I look immediately for the dreaded 24 hour dial, and if it's there, I'm not. It annoys me no end and has literally stopped me from buying a chronograph watch. As you say, it seems to have become an industry standard thing now, so I guess no affordable chronograph for me any time soon.
I think chronographs are actually used by their owners only slightly more often than helium release valves and tachymeter scales. Check Seiko's sales numbers if you doubt it.
@@jpdemer5 But both of those, even when they are not used by the owners, at least can serve a purpose for the type of watch they are attached to and don't look out of place. The 24h subdial is like putting a helium escape valve on a chronograph or alternatively a tachymeter scale on a dive watch. Out of place, if nothing else. Sales wise, Seikos movements are simply so great at their price point that they sell regardless, but I suspect few, if any would complain about replacing those 24h subdials with one actually fitting the watch, even if they never use it. There is a reason why above 1000usd, you will hardly find any chronograph with a 24h subdial, even though the vast majority of owners at a price point, that might warrant more out there subdials, hardly use their Daytona, Chronomaster or Moonwatch for timing either.
I think Andrew missed the memo for this and instead somehow heard they're doing a talk on 'the best seiko watches to buy in 2023' 😉🤣 only messing. It goes to show however just how much value seiko can offer the consumer in a market where a lot of times £1000 can't get you anything special. The speedtimer is just 😍

Tom: whatever / Andrew: Seiko... This sounds like an old turntable that the needle got stuck! 😋 (or bad cop / good cop, where Seiko is ALWAYS the good cop... hahaha)
As a fairly new watch idiot I am wondering why majority of GMT watches are divers? I mean you hardly dive from a time zone to another. Something more dress oriented would fit better for airport lounges…
Andrew Seiko Turtle - Unique case great choice. Seiko Presage - Same brand eh, great value watch, a bit thick, beautiful dial Seiko Panda - same brand…, other than that I love the chrono. Seiko GMT - I won’t hold the same brand against you anymore because you at least kept it consistent. Great choice, started a watch movement toward affordable GMTs. Seiko 5 Field - Eh looks kind of copy and paste from other field watches. Tom Mido Oceanstar - great choice, great value for $. Tissot Chemin de… - beautiful watch Boldr Rally - not my favorite, but objectively a nice watch Timex Q GMT - Love this watch and own it in the Pepsi variation. Serica Field - Great looking choice, I’ve just heard bad things about the dive watch they sell with the crown.. but i haven’t heard anything bad about this beautiful field watch. Great choice. Tom wins. Variety and better looking watches overall.
“You got a day date complication. Which is critical on those longer dives.”

Yes and no. Yes because Seiko has a very wide array of choice. However, it doesn't have everything you need because your needs will have to consider several factors such as affordability, purchasing power, utility, specs offered, etc.

In the affordable watch category the most affordable watch is a ...
I wouldn't want to own one that falls in that category.

Seiko Turtle - Unique case great choice.
Seiko Presage - Same brand eh, great value watch, a bit thick, beautiful dial
Seiko Panda - same brand…, other than that I love the chrono.
Seiko GMT - I won’t hold the same brand against you anymore because you at least kept it consistent. Great choice, started a watch movement toward affordable GMTs.
Seiko 5 Field - Eh looks kind of copy and paste from other field watches.

Mido Oceanstar - great choice, great value for $.
Tissot Chemin de… - beautiful watch
Boldr Rally - not my favorite, but objectively a nice watch
Timex Q GMT - Love this watch and own it in the Pepsi variation.
Serica Field - Great looking choice, I’ve just heard bad things about the dive watch they sell with the crown.. but i haven’t heard anything bad about this beautiful field watch. Great choice.
Tom wins. Variety and better looking watches overall.
Glad moonswatches aren’t on this list
