I've read many comments were people who claim to be guitar players saying that Gary was just an average guitar player there was f****** nothing average about Gary's guitar playing he was great one of the best to come out of the 70s that's a fact.
Probably the most underrated guitarist, friend of mine had a book with the SUPPOSED top 100 guitarist of all time, Richrath wasn't in it, yet Joan Jett was, that tells ya something right there
Gary Richrath is such an ultra hard rocker....he works that Les Paul like you would imagine Ace Frehley or Neal Schon working it. hARd rOCk! What rock and roll is all about. Gary is up there with the greats.
No disrespect, but imho Gary was way better than any that you mentioned, possibly the best instinctive player out there to ever pick up a Les Paul. To this day I've never heard anyone duplicate Gary's tone and style "without electronic dubbing". This would include "Dave" the guy that took his place in the band years ago. Don't get me wrong, Dave is a good player. Maybe it's just that Gary put his all into playing. Heart and soul.
I am a capable guitarist that has been playing for over 50 years.... there are very few truly noteworthy guitar greats..... but Gary has always been a freaking show stopper
What I have always loved about Gary's playing is he made it look so effortlessly and fun.....and of course that sound....wow!!! BTW....glad the vhs tape didn't mess up during Gary's solo here😂
In Honor of Gary…..and todays news that Meatloaf has passed…..it’s safe to say that all of our Rock legends from their respective eras are reaching the ages and mortality that we fans could never have imagined. The world is a more sad place without them but they will always live on in our lives. Here’s to all of the Rock Gods that we’ve Loved, and to all those generations of fans who love them!! THANK YOU All!!!
Gary was boozing and taking drugs before they got really big the with Hi Infidelity album, but yes Kevin's ego became inflated after the success of the Hi Infidelity album.
@@gregorycarlson6632 Greg you have got to watch this, and read the guys story. First time he met Gary was 2014 and he jammed with him! facebook.com/jami.martinez.12/videos/10204041136503416/ Man he could still play like no other!
Just wow, Gary Richrath. I pray there's a rock n' roll heaven. RIP.Those were REO's best musical days, with this line-up. Period. My favorite band through the 80's, saw them as often as I could...still listen to the cds in my car from time to time.ps. Just struck me.. Kevin Cronin's looking a little like he took his styling tips from Ronald McDonald in those days. lol.
These guys were fantastic musicians, something rarely seen these days since so much "music" is synthesized, and computerized. I love to watch Alan beat the heck out of those drums, and Bruce is a really good bassist. Then, there's Neil on keys, and dang, could he play those keys! And Gary ..... the guy is hot like lava!! I remember friends getting to go see them, and I couldn't go. Afterwards, all I heard from my girlfriends was how Gary looked in tight, black pants, and a pink shirt, lol! Now that I have the benefit of seeing what I missed on UA-cam videos, I would certainly have to agree cause, OMG!
Them champagne Illinois boys rocked as hard as any band could. Gary was a ass Kicking guitar player very under rated just listen to Riding the storm out one of many songs he shredded.
That band had so much energy live and the camera direction did an amazing job in conveying that.So much talent back in that era,in front and behind the camera. Most bands at that time didn't need to rely on huge stage show productions, just pure talent and energy is all it took to rock a friggin' stadium, qualities that so many bands lack today.
What made this even better was the VHS glitches throughout the video. Reminds of recording these videos off NightTracks and MTV's Saturday night concerts. Greatness.
Video and Song 39 on MTV August good pick also random is brilliant what they did even unrated tune u dont hear much by these guys anyways blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s

Gary richrath was one hell of a talented guitar player! it is very sad that the booze messed him up so bad. He looked horrible when I saw what he looked like before he died. He was unrecognizable! r.i.p. Gary richrath. So sad.
Carl Dinkel : I commented on the exact same thing earlier. Literally broke my heart to see him looking like that!! I loved REO back in their prime but on their albums they sounded kinda "soft" (like Air Supply)...then saw them in concert around 2003 and they were so loud and BIG, amazing show. One of my favorite all time bands for sure. And we saw Air Supply a couple years ago and they are not like their albums either, they rocked, great show.
Something that they always forget to mention when talking about Gary, the rest of them were just as much into drugs and drinking as Gary, Gary just didn't seem to have as much ego as some of them. Gary had friends in low, and high places, yet never acted better than anyone.
If anyone ever notices Kevin Cronin NEVER REALLY PLAYS THE GUITAR. I'VE looked at several different videos to watch. He was just singing. Should have let te other guitarists be right up front with him.
Love these guys. Hi Infidelity was the first cassette tape I had as a kid. Used to listen to it in my Sony Walkman. These guys rock , but it's kinda funny--prancing around in those getups they look gayer than the Village People :D
