Those licks are burned in my generational brain! Gary was definitely the man. One of the best players and most underrated. And REO was hittin on a cylinders then!
Those fast octave chords at the end of Don't Let Him Go.....immense. Richrath was a beast at playing those fret runs (like the bend runs in Roll With The Changes). Man, he was a great player.

I think people finally realized what a powerhouse amazing band they were. Still are, but Gary made them really amazing. Love love. We all must roll with the changes, and ride out our storms.
Neal Doughty had some pretty good work going on in these songs as well. Everything he did, whether a melody or a solo, was always in perfect context. I always felt the same way about Steve Pocoro from Toto...unsung heroes.
Roll with the changes... Our friends and family get older and pass away, but you just have to keep on Rockin and Rollin along. Life can be short or long....keep rolling along!

@ ButterBobWorth Please do not mention Dokken and Lynch in the same sentence as the other guys who are worth mentioning. You are way off if you think George Lynch had a single thing to do with influencing any real guitarists. He was a smoke and mirrors player. He played little phrases and recorded them all on tape, then the engineer spliced the master tape together to form a cohesive solo. He was not able to fluidly play. I know that even the greats "punch in" solo parts that were tough to do in a single take...hell even EVH did it on "Push comes to Shove, because he could not make his mind up on a single solo for the master. So he "punched in" a few parts. You can hear it when you listen to the solo. But that was rare. Lynch was Warren DiMartini , watered down, or light. LOL. DiMartini is fuckin great though. If you play, you should know all of this...so I am sorry for rambling on to ya man. My apologies. We can agree on all your other stuff without a doubt though, that is for damn sure R.I.P. I cant believe the genre of music is dead. I just cant believe it. But JUST like many styles that came before this guitar-drums rock band style, all things fall by the way-side. Its too bad, because although my perspective on this is subjective, Im old, and kids today don’t care about this, just as I didn’t care about Elvis, or rockabilly.
You all are correct. Gary is a fantastic player. Saw REO in the Paramount Portland, OR in 1978 right after I saw Clapton in the same venue. Love Eric but REO was awesome. Everyone stood up for the whole concert. Tickets were $8.50 then, lol. Still pissed off at Keven Cronin for what he did to Gary.
Richrath WAS a guitar-god in the likes of the greats. He looked great with that Les Paul slung over his shoulder, and played searing, melodic leads as well as anyone. This band could really play. They lost their way around 1984, success spoiled em...as it does many bands.
That smile GR has when he plays guitar is so infectious. I have fun just watching that guy have his own fun. Also, I get a kick out of moments like at 1:57 when GR brings the house down with his guitar solo, smile, and body language and then KC tries to upstage him with some goofy leap and back pedal movement to the microphone at 2:09 . Sorry KC, but you'll never be GR because GR was a genuine person with a down-to-earth personality who was talented beyond belief. Because of that, it was GR who connected with the fans.
We can compliment people without having to put others down or make stupid assumptions of why someone leaped in the air while they were rocking out. It's rock 'n roll, dude. I too "leap" when listening, and there's no one around me at the moment to "upstage". Perhaps the person leaping is smiling and enjoying the sound too, the one they're making as well as the one Gary is. I doubt it you knew either one of them so you can't say what personality one had and what the other did not. Calm down!
Gary kept the band grounded in ROCK- they hit the formula to sell their albums and keep playtime on the radio- but LIV they were the TRUe ORIGINAL REO im from MN seen em 5 times- they were Midwest Rock and Roll- 70s and 80s wouldnt have been the same w/out Richrath/Cronin and the team
I saw them at a school in Peru Indiana right after they released their first album. The synthesizer was so freaking loud. The Gary was so very good. I saw them five more times over the years and Cary was just a rocking Superstar. He's one of the greatest guitarist I've ever seen. Rest in peace Gary
