saw them 7 times GARY!! and... I didn't have paper when I saw him somewhere at a record store and I had them autograph my arm and took photos of it😂 looking for 157 Riverside Avenue...
Neal Doughty was my neighbor in Belleville, Illinois. He taught me how to play the piano when i was 13 years old! We lived on Cambridge Drive. He lived @ #8 & i lived @ #23. I still play the piano! Time For Me To Fly! I'm Ridin This Storm Out! Respectfully Submitted, Jack
Prime example of why the Midnight Special kicked ass. This is what live music 🎶 🎵 shows should be like and sound like. This was the best of times. I'm blessed to have been apart of the generation that still remembers this.
One of the best concerts I ever saw was REO sharing a bill with Rainbow in 1978. The lead guitarist, Gary Richrath, was a beast on those 6 strings and remains one of my biggest influences when it comes to playing leads. May he rest in peace.
Saw these guys a few years at Grenta Fest across the River from New Orleans. The band basically said " I know you know what "Riding a Storm Out" means...I sat on the levy watching, and I don't think there was a dry eye around us. Great song!
It was that opening synthesiser line that sold me on this song. Surprisingly it didn't even break into the top 100 when it was released. It had a slow burning fuse up the charts even though many of us think it defines the sound of this band. Kind of like Dream On by Aerosmith which also took forever to make a dent in the music charts.
Aerosmith had a lot of songs like that. Their earliest stuff was available on the double album "bootleg" edition, that came out in the early 80's. One song, "Mother Popcorn" goes back to their roots-beginning when they worked out of a little van with nothing in their pockets.
1976, I was 16 years old. Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, TN...Wet Willie, Golden Earring, and REO Speedwagon. It was sponsored by an AM station, 56 WHBQ. It was a "special pricing" concert and the tickets were only $1.56 each! My seat was 3rd row, directly in front of Gary. I saw a few concerts before and many more after that, but watching Gary play was one of the most memorable concert experiences I ever had. Listening to "You Get What You Play For" very closely emulates that experience. They were such a fantastic live band.
That original lineup was so good. I know they’re still good, but there was something special about those guys. Kevin’s ability to sound like the record live is very impressive.
I’ll admit I was never a big REO fan. My girlfriend in high school liked them so of course I had to take the counter position, just to be annoying. Maybe it’s why we broke up. Anyways I’ve never seen REO live although this is the second video I’ve seen of REO on this channel. What strikes me immediately: they are or were a really “clean” band live. They sound almost like they’re in the studio playing live. Their guitarist, while being no Randy Rhoads, plays great live and the singer is excellent too. I saw Journey during the Escape tour - one of the best shows I’ve seen - and Journey was like that live as well.
Greg Philbin bass player and founding member of REO was asked to leave the band before this video because they said he overplayed. Pure BS because he was such a solid bassist through their early years. RIP Greg Philbin.
Gary ❤ and the band really rocked live (before Good Trouble and the sappy ballad era) and RTSO was an excellent example! Gary was a real rock star, also credit to Neal - I’ve been watching a lot of REO live on YT and in addition to being very talented he is always spot on. Bet he could play these songs blindfolded.
Interesting how low Kevin’s rhythm part was in the mix and the riffs and solos from Gary really needed some rhythm under them. Gary was so freaking amazing on lead.
Cronin with a les paul wow! Gary was a monster! Those guys needed a Andy Johns or Bill Symcyzk type to open up that ballsy guitar sound they had...reel that Cronin in...Mike Stone or Keith Olsen would of got it done too!
I just noticed that he had a bit of a Duane Allman sound with that Les Paul. He should have a second lead with him in the band. The things they could have done.
As much as I love Hi Infidelity when it came out (I was 16 and my girlfriend had just broken my heart) I think Gary was wasted in this band, they weren't strong writers and Hi Infidelity was truly the only good album they ever had or did, I have tried many time over the years to listen to all their other albums and Gary is the brightest light in the ones where he played
Wish this had Mike Murphy who sang this song when Speedwagon released it not Kevin Cronin. Gary Richrath's guitar is killer but the vocals just don't sound right.
Gary is such a great player.
saw them 7 times GARY!! and... I didn't have paper when I saw him somewhere at a record store and I had them autograph my arm and took photos of it😂 looking for 157 Riverside Avenue...
Reo was Gary and Allen
@@HappyEndins ya, OK
@@HappyEndinsThis definitely!
This band has many classic hits and they are still very underrated.
This is a great performance, thank you for posting.
One of our favorite bands. RIP Gary Richrath, true guitar legend!🙏🏻🎧
Gary Richrath, self taught player & very good, RIP!
Before they went full tilt 80s AOR, they were a fantastic hardrock band. And this is the proof! Thanks
If there was ever a guitar player more at home on the stage than Gary, I’ve never seen it.
Saw them in the 70s and they kicked ass. Gary was killer.
Those neon letters always put me in a good mood. A little REO Speedwagon does too🎉.
Me, too!🙌😀
Same here!
I'll be in the Rockies this winter and I hope my neighbors like this song, cause they're gonna definitely hear it!
😂
It will be their favorite song whether they like it or not! 😆
If by chance they should call to ask if you would mind turning it do you should answer Dut Dut Do Dudio Dut Dut Dudio× 3 😅
So well done; Gary really had a lot of talent.

Small world. We (I presume) and Neal were born in Belleville or grew up there. I'm only 25, though.
Cool story...this is what the Internet was designed to be.
RIP Gary. You were the pinnacle of cool.
Pinnacle of cool indeed!!!! I was 12 years old when I saw REO play this and Gary seemed like a god to me. The coolest!
Prime example of why the Midnight Special kicked ass. This is what live music 🎶 🎵 shows should be like and sound like. This was the best of times. I'm blessed to have been apart of the generation that still remembers this.
Only band ever named after a truck. Always loved Gary's playing!
This one has my vote for the best rock n roll song EVER!!
Richrath rules 🤘
YES
I saw them at the Shrine Auditorium in LA in 1978, they opened with this song.🎉
This is a great song, I was lucky it received heavy play on the radio. Thanks a lot, The Midnight Special for refreshing my memory.
This is ALL Gary all the way-incredible effortless perfection...the most under rated guitarist ever! the other guys were there for the ride!
I saw REO in concert 7 times. Gary was a hell of a guitarist and looked so cool doing it. One of my favorite bands to this day
Man, Gary was a cool guy! 🤩
YES
REO does it again! Awesome performance! Now I'm sad I never got to one of their concerts back then! Kevin sure rocked that lead vocal! 🤘💜
Well, it worked A LOT better when Kevin sang it than with Mike Murphy.
@@gregoryduncan3067I assume that was the previous lead singer? I didn't really know of this band until Kevin. I like his voice a lot.
REO was my first concert. 1983. It was a party !
@@shadowwolf9503 That's cool!🙌
@@StephanieJeanneThey've had a couple of other singers. With Kevin, it was REO Speedwagon. With the other 2, it was just some other band.

I remember the first time I heard this! Went and bought the album and it rocked! Still a good song!
It was that opening synthesiser line that sold me on this song.

Dear Lord that crowd didn't move at all. Such talent.
I heard that they were required to stand still.
I remember the first time hearing REO. Blown away, then. Blown away now
One of my favorites back in the day. I feel so bad for youngsters who missed out on these types of concerts
Wow! Love an actual live performance.
1976, I was 16 years old. Mid South Coliseum in Memphis, TN...Wet Willie, Golden Earring, and REO Speedwagon. It was sponsored by an AM station, 56 WHBQ. Bitd when you could see a killer 3 band show for 10 bucks.
Wet willie! Wow!
I saw them in 1978 or 79 at Mid South coliseum as well. They opened with Like you do, then Roll with the changes. Great show!
Enjoyed seeing this. Great American band!
Saw them at an outdoor show in Louisville Ky… it was awesome and they were on fire in 1980.. 🔥
This boys and girls is real rock and roll!
Great quality video and sound - thanks for posting Gary was such a force in this great band .
Awesome performance!! Great band!!👏💯🔥💝
Wonderful Very nice
I was 11 years old, loved these guys - thought they were the American Beatles.
That original lineup was so good. I know they’re still good, but there was something special about those guys.
Kevin’s ability to sound like the record live is very impressive.
you're not saying this is original line-up are you?
It's not the original lineup, the definitive lineup probably.
Great Video and Sound Quality! Thanks again for sharing these.
So great....´nuff said!! Thx!
Great to see Gary pound on a real Les Paul Standard- ace player, underrated, and not afraid to crunch a rare guitar on stage.
Look how young they were. Hard to believe how fast time flies by. Must be an awesome feeling to know you created something that will outlive you.
Alan Gratzer! Wow! These guys rocked so hard!

I have this on cassette tape. But I don't have a tape player any more!
Wonderful!
Greg Philbin bass player and founding member of REO was asked to leave the band before this video because they said he overplayed. Pure BS because he was such a solid bassist through their early years. RIP Greg Philbin.
💗 this album ... Sexy !!
KILLER 🔥 📛
I saw Gary and reo in 1976 at kc collage in centralia il. Awesome
Hell yes..
Isn't it about time these guys got into the rock and roll hall of fame?
Yes, but the rnrhof...sucks.
Kevin’s hair was far out man! What a cool dude!
REO was excellent in 1989
Shoulda seen them in the early 70's fire 🔥
The Moody Blues don't get enough credit - this riff is lifted directly from "The Story in Your Eyes."
Are you deaf? Playing a similar chord progression on bass is not stealing a guitar riff.
Moody Blues one my favorite Bands. Glad I saw them 5 times.
I don’t think so, sounds different. Just heard the first few minutes, but I hear a different tune.
WHERE ARE YOU GUYS AT? I live in Heritage Harbour behind Costco !
I live in a Rocky Mountain state. I stay OUT of them from October to June. Yechh.
1:21 His knees...
Haha.. right? 😂
😊❤👍
Dido rest in peace Gary so bad how he was treated in a band he started
Kids in the 80's wanted to play like Van Halen. The Richrath style technique was just as good or maybe a little better even.
Saw them numerous times in the 70s and 80s… not the same without Richrath…
I can’t help but notice that Kevin Cronin looks like a 75 year old man in a wig 😂
Living in Japan.
Lately he looks like an 80 year old grandma 😆
Never was a Kevin fan. Liked the Origional lead singer so much more. Gary was the man !
I just noticed that he had a bit of a Duane Allman sound with that Les Paul. He should have a second lead with him in the band. The things they could have done.
Nice Les Paul Goldtop.
His legs are like a metronome.
Kevin shouldn't have did such big rails before getting on stage.
I'm pretty sure Kevin Cronin ran a half of a mile in place...
There's a slightly better version on the live album You Get What You Play For with Greg Philbin on bass
Still, this is killer
😮
Richrath was underrated. Cronin looked like a poodle with a big nose
One of the few where I like the original singer better than Kevin.
I love Zep AND Skynyrd, but Stairway to Heaven and Freebird got NOTHING on this epic orchestration.
Not even close to the same tune sung by Mike Murphy. A real step down for this band.
Is he wearing a wig?!
345
Wish this had Mike Murphy who sang this song when Speedwagon released it not Kevin Cronin. Gary Richrath's guitar is killer but the vocals just don't sound right.
Kevin Cronin is a dork.
Зашибись
Does anyone else think the guitar player looks like Steve O wearing a wig?
Great song from a mediocre band.
