Dr., I really think you are doing an excellent job here. Most people are not fully aware of the dangers of psychiatric medications. I have been a psychologist for 20+ years... I taught at the University of Havana, I worked for several years as a clinical psychologist in my country, and I currently work in the United States in a psychiatric emergency clinic and believe me, over the years I have seen things that have scared me both as a professional and as a person.
I would like to emphasize that this type of iatrogenic approach defines not only psychiatric intervention but also psychological-evaluative and psychotherapeutic practice... I often see many people begin therapeutic processes inadvertent of the negative effects that may arise in this sense, especially when it is not entirely necessary to intervene. The effects of iatrogenic practice are not exclusive to the psychiatric field, but also largely define clinical psychological praxis, giving rise to "biased approaches" that respond more to commercial interests masked in legislative statutes than to clinical criteria. Where have the ethical values (Primum Non Nocere, Non maleficence, distributive justice, and autonomy) gone in this entire network of selfish interests?
I believe that mindset is playing a critical role in this regard... most academic and residency programs have among their purposes educating students to blindly obey what they are taught....paradoxically, the same programs emphasize the importance of critical thinking....the field of "Mental Health" (questionable construct) has become a labyrinth of whims supported by non-scientific procedures....

I deeply appreciate your truthfulness! We're living in very critical times in every way, certainly within the medical field too, no exception. It is very refreshing to see/hear/see many medicos, so much like yourself and this young doctor, bringing such light to our lives.
I don't take any medication at all, I'm just weeks off 78, but .... I have a 38 year old son who is as psychotic as they come, and I certainly blame the fact that he's become a 'drug addict' through overuse of too many medications. It's a never-ending cycle.
I live in Australia. It's no different here.

I had been on Trazadone several different times throughout the years, since 1995.
Trazadone has a very short window to where it makes you sleepy. If you go past that window, and still haven't gotten to sleep, then it's not going to work for you on that night. You have to go right to bed and be ready to go to sleep right when taking it, or the window can pass.

This may sound strange. Being in protracted withdrawal from benzos, anxiety is through the roof, I found that if I only take 1/4 .12mg it would take the edge off my sever anxiety and shaking!! Then to sleep at night I have been taking.25mg for the last two years to sleep. Extremely low doses it has helped get through this. When my anxiety level is so high. Better than taking a strong sleeping pill or antidepressant.
    Whatever works for you. ❤

Dr I am taking it now. I have what you might call a hangover effect in the morning as well. I wake up each morning feeling in deep depression. The feeling of depression is one of universal hopelessness. It takes about an hour or hour and a half to break out of this state stuporous depression. I feel a state of total helplessness and hopelessness. I directly connect this to my use of trazodone before going to bed the night before. This pain was so great that when I connected the dots very quickly I cut the dosage into hoping that the adverse effect would be less. The effect still remained. I now only take it on times when I remain awake until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. as an absolute last resort. The Doctor who prescribed it has taken no notice of my words to him. I truly feel abandoned by this doctor.

To me trazodone was pure evil. It caused really bad acne along with a nervousness that urged me to pick my skin. I developed dermatilomania because of that and for years i had badly infected wounds and sores covering my face and chest. I have scars on my face that span a couple centimeters and there’s no binding tissue under the scar tissue. Luckily im skilled with makeup but im deeply embarrassed about it. The effects of this “medication” will forever scar my face and im crying just writing about it.
After i quit trazodone the acne cleared up and i have no urges to pick my skin anymore. I never self harmed before or after taking trazodone. Im still enraged and no doctor or psychologist will take me seriously. It’s bone chilling how the system works. I’ll never, ever take any antidepressants again and I’ve lost all my trust in doctors.

Omg that sounds crazy! I was recently prescribed trazadone but havent been brave enough to take it yet. I actually dont have ANY issue going to sleep. My issue is extreme tiredness the every single day. I had a sleep study which was normal. I also have untreated ADHD as well. Doctor wants to try me for n trazadone for 2 weeks to make sure I dont have any insomnia as she said untreated insomnia plus the ADHD meds is kinda dangerous, thats what she said anyways. I have seen ppl say when they take trazadone they slee straight through their alarms the next day and sleep all day and feel drunk. I wake up early for work so that kinda scares me. Thats wild abt it causing your scars though. I am sure even with those scars you are still as beautiful as can be though 😊 and yes, doctors are kinda reckless these days, not all but most. I swear i have a phobia of doctors bc they can be very neglectful and think they know everything. My adhd is out of hand so i do think it needs to be treated but im scared to take those meds. I was on adderal my whole kid and teenage life. Only thing i remember was it causing a little dry mouth. But i still really dont wanna be on it but my adhd really affects my life, my work, my goals, many many things

@@Ghetto-toaster22 Thank you so much for your kind words! You definitely deserve to extend that kindness and empathy to yourself! I don’t think you’re not “brave enough” in your hesitation to take the Trazodone, if anything I believe you’re wise to be cautious and critical. I took Trazodone (100 mgs) along with Fluoxetine (40 mgs) a day and looking back on it, I believe that this combination didn’t work for me. I never engaged in any self h*rming activities, even at my lowest point, so it stood out to me. I used to pick my skin until I looked like on of the actors from the Chernobyl series. My mental health care team sadly ignored my concerns and it taught me the importance of not solely relying on meds to make my life better. Antidepressants can certainly help with getting through the hardest time, but they’re more like a bandaid rather than a long term solution. I regret to tell you that I recently started taking Trazodone again, but not the Fluoxetine because of a double burn out, and the skin picking is at a minimum. The scars on my face are sadly quite pronounced, the biggest is on my forehead, it’s about 3 centimeters in diameter and it made a dent in my skin. However I am thankful for the fact that I didn’t get any infections (due to sheer luck or a good immune response). They definitely do bother me, but a good concealer and setting powder makes them stand out less!
Because of my severe burn out I also take benzodiazepines, but I found a trick to keep their use to a minimum- whenever anxiety strikes, i look at the clock and I try to sit with it for at least half an hour before taking a dose. This way I’ve been able to go four hours without taking a new dose. It’s quite empowering and it gives me a sense of control.
About ADHD, I relate so much to you! I’m not a doctor, but I do agree with yours about cutting back on them when you feel extremely tired during the day. Insomnia can completely destroy you and having quality sleep is crucial for your mental and physical health. However, i also understand your hesitation to quit the ADHD meds, because our condition can be quite disruptive and society demands that we function at a certain level AND we have bills to pay, simple as that. When you do decide to cut back on stimulants I would highly recommend you taper them off instead of quitting them cold turkey. It’s best to discuss this with your doctor, and stick to the regimen. I totally get why you’re scared of doctors, because I am too. But believe me when I say that most doctors are good, empathetic people that genuinely want you to live your best life. If you don’t feel comfortable or heard by your doctor there’s definitely the option to look for another doctor who might be more caring and patient. It’s easier said than done, but I feel that because of your openness and willingness to get better you have the skills you need, even though you might feel like you don’t.
Another thing that really helps me is whenever I feel anxious or overwhelmed is to have a private kitchen dance party. It might seem so silly, but the body stores a lot of our emotions and with something like dancing, writing or any other kind of artistic expression you might be able to release some of the tension. The goal is not for it to be perfect, it just needs to bring some kind of relief.
ChatGPT4o also helps me to understand myself and my relationship to others a lot better, and it made me a lot more compassionate towards myself! I hope you find these tips helpful, feel free to reach out to me if you need any advice.
Thank you for your honesty, kindness and for sharing your story with me, I consider it to be an honor and a compliment.

@@alicebecker2212 humor is showing. I am not on ADHD meds, i haven’t been on them since I was 19 and I am 39 (yikes I am old). I didn’t really quit them for a good reason though. I basically only quit bc I was embarrassed to be medicated at that young and it made me think I was crazy or something I dunno lol. That sounds dumb I know but hey I was 19 lol. The doctor that put me on the trazadone was a sleep doctor. Just to rule out insomnia before putting me on the ADHD stimulant. I feel like the older I get the more ADHD is affecting me. It really impacts my life I feel. Although I would rather not be on stimulants, i think the positives would outweigh the negatives since I know I did so well on adderral before. I used to party a little bit, but only with alcohol but i completely quit that a couple years ago. I wasnt an alcoholic by any means but I definitely had a unhealthy relationship with it. And btw, I really really like your positive mindset you seem to have! Your whole story I in all honesty just would like to hear more about. Oh I LOVE chatGPT although I have never used it for that. Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope you have been feeling better than you were previously, I definitely want that for you. I am also glad you were never into self harming. Your positivity is definitely something that this worlds need more of even all that you been through so sticking around forever is a MUST for you! I have never engaged in self harm either. I know I am slightly depressed but nothing severe. I dunno if its actually depression from something more mental of just from being extremely exhausted all the time. I was up more tired than before I went to bed even with 7-10 hours of sleep. Im thinking i feel the way I do bc of the exhaustion to be honest. Its just tiring and depressing to feel like that all the time you know. Are you in the US?

That said, getting off it was very hard and no doctor warned me of that. I tapered over a few weeks, and would literally hear voices when I tried to sleep.
Though eventually I got off, I now find that good ole THC is the most effective. I don’t take much, fall asleep easily and stay asleep, but don’t feel hungover in the morning. I only took it after my benzo hell to help sleep. The dry mouth was horrible. It's not a problem now, but it took me forever to slowly get used to it. I want to taper off, but I will wait for a bit until I can sleep better.

It’s not an addiction to it but it’s a dependence on it.
It may sound like the same thing but it’s not.
The analogy to Benadryl is a good one.

My experience with trazadone was very underwhelming. It did not help me sleep nearly as well as seroquel. By that I mean the sedative effects were unnoticeable in comparison. But maybe I was spoiled by Seroquel because that stuff absolutely knocked me down and forced me to sleep (and eat junk food)
I have quit all sleeping medications, except maybe a Tylenol or aspirin before bed on occasion
