Yeah, that's how I've felt about relationships for the past five years, since my last ex... Our relationship was incredibly intense and we constantly idealised it, twisting it into this grandiose melodrama... it's hard to describe really, but I feel like all my idealism and my former romantic, "magical realist" conception of the world has been utterly expended and exhausted.
All those things that made love so wondrous, all the places it supposedly could have lead to, now seem absolutely ridiculous and fraudulent. I feel like everything in life has been stripped back to its barest utilitarian essence, colourless and totally incapable of inspiring anything.
I can't even find comfort in memories of the relationship, because they all seem to involve a delusional and laughably naïve version of myself, someone I feel absolutely no connection with. Either that or they're just horrible memories.

@@portugaltheman9717 they started brainstorming the outline in 1999 after they casted in Waking Life and started write the sceen play in 2003 until 2004 and they filmed in for 15 days cause they only had little budget. It's similar with Before Midnight. They said they was brainstorming for the outline in 2010 and met again in 2012-2013 to write the screenplay and filming for 20 days+ in Greece but had to rehearsal it over and over again to look more natural for weeks in Greece before started filming. It happened same thing while they filmed in Paris & Vienna. It tooks 3 months to rehearsals in Paris for Before Sunset and 6 months rehearsals for Before Sunrise because they have ton of lines. Each scenes contain 7-20 pages.
Ethan Hawke mentioned it before in his interview Before Sunset was the time where he was in depression and had problems in his marriage with Uma Thurman. He remembered exactly that Before Sunset is meaningful for him cause he was there with his bestfriends Julie and Rick.

Her monologue showcases the ambiguity of finding love in the modern world and the conflicting desires we have, as well as the consequences of heartbreak and grief. She is just working through it. To acknowledge the ways in which we act out our fears and internal conflict in our relationships is an act of profound humility.

There is no clear explanation of her statement "I would have said no but atleast they could have asked" . Its like she has no regard to the person pursuing her. Her ego takes control when in distress. That is why she is single. Jesse made a mistake. Should have left her.

@@Aniket-dr8pu I see what you mean, but I have different view of it. I think that line itself makes Celine one of the most complex female characters on screen. The way I see it :that line has nothing to do with her ego.She just wants to be loved-just like everybody else. But she knows all of those guys were not right for her and she was not right for them. But she wished she had been choosen, at least for once, that someone could look at her and plan to have seroius plans with her.I think its a beautiful line that perfectly portrays the woman who seems to be unable to find love. At least that is my view, but I understand that people see her on different way (esspecially considering 3rd movie)

When I started watching this movie I really liked the more relaxed atmosphere between them two. Everything was flowing easily and they seemed to have a good time making jokes about their only night together. Suddenly, in the middle of the movie (before the boat trip) I was getting frustrated because they didn't seem ready to open themselves emotionally and the script was not matching the romantic tension of the marvellous previous movie...and then, things started to get pregressively intense until they got in the car and bang! all the feelings afloat charging against each other and the audience itself. Great direction...the final section of Before Sunset is so good. Such a beautiful surprise. Barely surpassed by the unforgettable flashback section of Before Sunrise.
I didn't expect to like this film as much as I did, but Linklater knows how to convey tenderness, nostalgia and humor in his dialogues and sense of detail. The last scene with the conversation about Celine's cat, the apartment sorroundings, the outdoor lunch, the neighbours' jokes and "Jesse's Waltz" is so plenty of color and joy. Easy-going and deep at the same time.

Before Sunset, imo, was one of the most heart wrenching video because at that time, I remember watching and not knowing for certain if Jesse and Celine would've gotten back together. 9 years is a long time. And seeing each other again, especially Celine is concerned whether Jesse is still as she remembers. And he is, he's still the same as in the first movie, still witty, still supportive, still as charming. I think Celine was assuming a lot of stuff and also meeting him again, she hoped to find closure in seeing him having changed. But as they spend time again together she realizes he's still the same guy she liked from that time, and that drove her nuts because that means she still loves him. I think in essence it is what it is, if the core of two people doesn't change, they will always have something for each other, the amount of time that separated them doesn't matter. EDIT: it's also a brilliant direction to choose an enclosed space like the car, where these two characters burst out of their emotions. If you think about it, every location has been chosen carefully to as to set the natural environment for one sort of conversion/interaction to be facilitated.

The best part of the whole trilogy, as a friend of mine told me once, is that she is exactly like this on the third one, basically with that famous line: “This is how people start breaking up.” Completely out of the blue, I burst into laughter.

In general, I'm just ticked off at people who are dishonest, lie to my face, hide things, play mindgames with me & others. I'm a really smart gal & I see through all the B.S. even though I also am empathetic & nice & openminded & give people the benefit of the doubt, too. It's a balancing act being a decent, good person to others. But yeah, the most recent boyfriend wiped me out energy, heart, mind, emotional-wise than the other 3 relationships I had before him combined. (cont.)

He came back all married, which she knew before they met in Paris and she is so frustrated about. She is saying the one night had a huge impact on her love life and he has been in the back of her mind all along. And then Jesse confessed marriage problems and he's thinking about her on his wedding day and even still dream about her. This sounds like he's blaming her for his failure in marriage? For me this is the scene where they realized they were never over each other but Celine can't do anything as Jesse is married with one kid. She said all her exes got married after they broke up. Why do men not understand?

myself to feel for 1st time since 2009 because I felt something deep that I never felt with other men for a long time. I let go & let my guards & fortress down for this man. Now, I feel like Julie Delpy's character. I help other people & am a good friend to them. I'm still the good-spirted, generous gal, but when it comes to love dept., I'm incapable to feel for any guy because it all went to guy of 2012. I hope it ends up better for Julie & Ethan's characters in next film, Before Midnight.

This guy was honestly the most complex, complicated, headscratching, confusing guy I've ever dealt with in the history of my life & at the same time I still loved him even though he was the most difficult, hard to read guy I've ever come across. Life is weird that way. That last boyfriend, guy is the type of guy who makes any gal who is in a relationship with him need to go to counseling because he is that complex & confusing. (cont.).

I read your comment in the voice(s) of my ex(s), because I could imagine at least 1 or 2 of them saying this exact thing about me (or at least about the version of me they dated back then). Now-a-days at least I do feel more steady, sensible, and sincere. But I do sometimes have regrets about past relationships and how things ended or I think about areas where I could have been better, but- because of how relationships tend to end messy, I feel a sense of sorrow that they (probably) won't ever reconnect or at least see me as I am now. Even if only to just reconcile a bit to create a better closure than where things left off from back then. But- they've likely moved on, and I feel any outreach on my part would either be seen as romantic or disingenuous, irregardless of any remorse that I would want to express. Not that my ex(s) were all perfect or flawless either, everyone is flawed. But I was definitely a more intricate and complex hot mess of a man back then, and Therefore I suppose I leave it to them to ever try to reach back towards me, or leave it to fate that I should ever just bump into any of them by random chance years later.

Right now, I'm not interested in romance with any guy. I'm still dealing with pain & hurt of that guy leaving in mid-February & dealing with the confusion & mess he left. I have many friends who say I could talk to them in private. They have been wanting me to talk to them via PM or e-mail, but for some reason, I just don't feel like talking to people I know. I only feel comfortable now talking to random stranger, aka you, about "feeling there is nothing left to give". Sorry for long post.

I feel wiped out because I'm not interested in other men romantically now. I don't have the energy to move on. And if this guy lied to me last year & this year & was being dishonest to me, I'll be even more pissed. I don't like it when people lie to my face, or hide, or act like they don't know me. I deserve respect & better treatment than that. If he has a conscience, he would make amends for that to me. It's not right what he did. (cont.)

Sorry for the late response, kate aka Julie. ;-) Sadly, things haven't changed, & you add some medical & health setbacks to the mix as well. Yes, "Before Sunrise" & 'Before Sunset" are among my favorite movies. I have yet to watch "Before Midnight" because the film wasn't aired in a theater near me. But I'll buy the DVD.
