  • Hey Kiddos, In this MSG we find the charger will not start and go through multiple steps to troubleshoot and see if we can get it running again. We also discuss the plans on what is next after we get it running.
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.

Definitely seems like a dead battery, I would recommend disconnecting the battery when you park it in the barn to keep it from draining down if there’s a draw on the system 👍🏼 Cleaning all the connections with a wire brush certainly won’t hurt either!

We usually keep it disconnected but when we got there it was still connected and dead. I thought we should be able to jump it, but that did not work. Charged battery did not work, and running the cables to my battery did not work I will have an update in the next video

Definitely a loose connection somewhere if it's not the battery.

You were spot on! Loose connection on the relay. Turns out the first trip to the car was a VERY dead battery. Charged it at home, but turns out my old charger is not the greatest. Took it back and did not start, so replace the relay and put a new battery in it. The battery worked but the wire was loose. I thought I had ruled that out but found it later. Probably should have said spoiler alert for the starter video.

Glad I could help. Keep the videos coming, this is and has always been my dream car. Atleast I got to be able to help out!

The battery in the car is drawn down com0letly flat. As you hook up the jumper cables listen to the truck engine. As you connect the last jumper cable, the truck engine should lug down when you hook the last cable. If not wiggle each jumper cable one at a time and listen, once you find the weak connection the truck engine will lug down as it starts charging the dead battery. Often just hooking the clamps on wont get a good connection. Wiggling the clamps cuts through the crud on the battery to get a good connection.
If you cant jump start try a known good battery in the car. If that doesnt work you can pull the starter and bench test with the jumper cables. If it works then the starter is probly fine. Clean all connection between battery and starter. It doesnt take much corrosion on connections to keep a starter from working.

This was our exact thought process. In the next video, we will go through these trouble shooting steps. I am a few videos behind the actual work.

Clean all the terminals, including at the block. Somewhere you have a dirty connection.

If you have seen the latest video, you will see that you were correct. I really wish I would have posted this video and seen your comment before having the kiddo replace the starter! oh well. Live and Learn. Maybe I should post my footage about the overheating issue before I go spend another few days on it!

try cleaning the negative battery cable connection to the car, could just be rusty and not making a good connection.

I did not show it on my latest video (the starter video) but when testing the terminals, the ground terminal does have a zone that is not registering. Most of the terminal shows a connection but one zone appears to not work. Did not make much sense to me, so just left it on, but may swap out the terminals in the future. Thank you for taking the time for the input. It really is helpful

Where you where saying about connecting the jumper direct to the leads instead of through a battery.
That doesn't always work. Especially on newer vehicles that draw more currnet.
I've tried it before on a mid 90's car and it hasn't worked with leads between the battery and cable.
An easy way to check the battery. While you're cranking, check how many volts it drops.

Correct. I should have mentioned Ohms law and that resistance of the conductor, the length of the conductor, and the voltage applied can have an effect on if extending the cable using the jumper cables on the terminals like that would be effective. I missed a teachable moment... although I think I would have to do a web search to remember how to calculate that. Can't let the kiddo see me do that!

You need a new battery, the starter is engaging. Or you have a loose wire on the starter.

I knew I should have posted this video before all the work we did on the starter! Oh well, Macy got some good hands on experience and this is a learning experience.

Are you asking why it looks melted or where it is now? @Dylan McCool just talked about the battery in one of his latest videos and how long it lasted.

Your jumper cables definitely don't have a good connection. I noticed one of the times you turned it over it arced and smoked that's tells you its a weak contact.

We will be swapping out the battery cables, or at least the terminals, during this restoration. Thanks for catching this and pointing it out for us
