  • Many books and movies portray a pirate’s life as glamorous, but nothing could be further from the truth. Living conditions on board the ship were terrible. A cramped and filthy environment, along with a lack of adequate nutrition and no access to clean water, led to the rampant spread of disease. And being out at sea for long periods of time in all weathers only added to the hardship. Let’s travel back in time and find out about pirates and their lousy hygiene habits. Welcome to Walk the Plank.

Dirty tow rag is a common British insult, but most people using it don't realise it refers to that bit of rope or rag hanging from a ship used like toilet paper.

If they saw they way we live now, even a poor person would have conveniences beyond a king back then.

I wonder if pirates ran around with clothespins on their noses. You know, because of "P.U.!" 😂

If they were in southern warm oceans you would think they would jump overboard a little bit and have a paddle about in the ocean to rinse off

Watch gold and gunpowder, he says pirates ate relatively well as they didn't go on long voyages and most stuck to the coast and Island hopping so there were plenty of chances to go ashore to get clean and reprovision.

I read a poem once that basically was about gooch cheese that was inches thick found in bathtubs frequented by pirates.

There was an outhouse at this place I had to go.. We were ALWAYS in a rush, so you'd have to rapidly go to the bathroom.. The smell.. dread. i feel dread, remembering.
yeah. that is nothing, compared to what pirates had to deal with!! WOW. But, yeah.. not all of them even chose it. wow. This world is so weird!! God is amazing. like, Try prayin folks. idk. "Parasitic fish followed the ships" It's like all of us with our celebrities :D trying to eat their..
that's a rude over-statement.. but, in many cases it applies.

They probably kept a couple sheep on board. I would not doubt sheep were the only livestock the men did not eat.

Hygiene as we know it, is a brand new thing. In the 1950s lots of people bathed only once a week, with was also the time to change their underwear.

They could've just towed a hotel ship behind, and detached when attacking in the smaller pirate ship.
