Enjoyed the latest video and catching up with a fine young man as yourself. Marched St. Andrews Bridgemen back in the day and competed against the Cadets when they were in Garfield. Drum Corps has evolved into something that I can appreciate and shake my head at as well. I enjoyed my time marching as the only female in the snare line as I am sure it was an integral part of shaping my professional ethics and empathy towards my colleagues. God Bless you Rocky. Much success in all you put your hand to.

Really enjoy your videos. Any advice for an incoming high school senior who wants to be a high school band director?

Hey Matt! My advice would be to be a sponge and absorb everything your band director is doing, ask questions, find a mentor, and know that leadership is service. Take the best of every teacher you’ve ever had, put it into a melting pot, add a sprinkle of yourself and keep growing!

Rocky Point Vlog Thanks, sounds like I’m on the right track. Of the six classes I’m taking first semester this year, half are music related (I also have two free periods on top of that which means more time in the band room 😁)

I love watching your videos; they’re really helpful! I had a question. So my band director can play multiple instruments and (assuming you can too) if I want to be a band director am I required to play all the instruments that I want to teach? Also, do they teach how to play all these different instruments in college?
    Thanks

You’ll need to be proficient at most every instrument before leaving college, but learning to play them is part of the curriculum, so no worries there! :)
