Phantom Regiment’s 2024 Show “Mynd” is an amazing example of why DCI should be considered to be Olympic level. The drill writing was some of the most difficult I’ve ever seen and the musicality was still incredible. The toll of work and effort on the body from visuals alone is incredible. The show is amazingly written and brought together. Being able to make a show come together and appear the way it does is beyond human. DCI is more than just a form of art and sport. It’s more than worthy of being recognized on an Olympic level.
I don't give a sh*t what everyone else says, Cadets looked AWESOME in black. 2015- Shostakovich 10th Symphony was fantastic. Power of Ten Ten tubas- Brass won the Jim Ott award. Ten snares- Drumline was great Guard- WTF? I've seen better high school guards. What Happened? Prelims show was electric. Finals was flat. What happened?

You should mention that there are many videos of videos before finals, and those shows almost always have something different either removed or added compared to the finals show. Really cool to see a show progress!
My favorite corps is Phantom Regiment, they have always made shows that has heavily impacted me in a way I can’t describe. My top shows for them are Juliet 2011, Exogenesis 2023, and Mynd 2024. Juliet is my number 1 show ever across all corps and for good reason

Oh don’t worry I’ve heard about this from my band friends going on page long rants and eventually just making video essays about the placements/scores from this years finals
Have loved DCI since I was in High School in the 80's and saw the Blue Devils '79 Show (La Suerte De Los Tontos) and now live in Canton (Home of the Blue Coats).
I had a friend that was quite overweight go off to compete in drum corps summer of junior year and they came back skinny the same August😅 that’s how i came to know that dci was intense
Truth be told, I didn’t know about DCI until after I aged out. I was kind of upset about it, but I’m so happy that they had a merger with Drum Corps Associates to introduce the All-Age division. It may not be the same, but it’s the closest this 25 year old will ever get to marching Spirit of Atlanta. Hoping to march in Atlanta CV in the 2025 season! 😊
Bloocoats “Change is everything” (just performed this last season) is my favorite DCI show and Phantom Regiments “Spartacus” is my second favorite show.

One thing I've always disliked as a non-American is that it's called "Drum Corps International". Where does the "international" part come into play? Afaik, it all or mostly takes place in the USA.
I used to be confused by this too. I then realized that only the US has “American Football” Fields readily available for rehearsals and performances all over the country. Additionally, the amount of people I marched with from other countries is higher than I would’ve thought!
There have been Canadian corps (mostly in open class) competing most seasons. At least all of the years I marched and most since. None in open class sadly. We also have corps that will come from out of country every once in a while from Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, the Netherlands and even the UK. But most if not all groups at the world level are from the US.
Yeah, there were definitely more bigger Canadian corps in the past. But as mentioned in the video, the performers still definitely come from all kinds of places, so participation is certainly international in scope. The Miss Universe pageant, however... 😜
Also highly recommend watching gopros of these performers. Watching the bloo 2017 buph soloist is what convinced me to finally audition and march euphonium with the Mandarins this last season. Seriously life changing (if only we did get $50k for it)
Nice presentation. but just saying, Does anyone really care what these shows are? Many would be excited to hear them playing cool music. jazz, West Side Story, whatever.
You’d be surprised at the number of high schoolers that genuinely obsess over DCI like with how some people obsess over hockey or whatever. And they take that obsession clear into adulthood.
@@tperk There is still a ton of traditional marching in shows these days. We’ve sprinkled in staging and ballet now! The activity must keep evolving, even if there are a few seasons of misses.
I've been a fan of DCI since 1993. But honestly, it lost me when they started to allow electronic instruments and *gasp* microphones. That just a bridge too far. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the size and static nature ifcthe pits these days. I yearn for the days where all instruments had to march. We got a taste of it in 2014 with the Cavalier's marching marimba solo. But that battle was lost decades ago.
I'm not coming here to judge, but I genuinely am curious why so many people who marched in the 90s have such a hatred towards the tech used in shows. If anything, it's broadened the musicality and creativity of the sport to bring it to new heights. Every year is another innovation of immense proportions, and it's so exciting to see!
Also, as someone who marched in both battery AND PIT, pit has SO much movement. You just have to watch them (especially in WGI). Cavs 2014 was cool, but it's so campy fo see that every year and defeats the purpose of what the pit is. A front ENSEMBLE. If anything, they capture musicality more than anyone else on that field
@GingerKing243 electric instruments and microphones is an affront to the traditions of drum core grown from the days of brass bands marching 4th of july parades. It's Brass and Percussion. Equally how this argument applies to artists like Anna Meredith who uses vocoders and other electronic tools to warp the sound of acoustic instruments. Would it be a reach to say you consider generes such as EDM or Techno as "not music" because they're electronically produced?
