- Time Stand Still
Music by Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson
Lyrics by Neil Peart
On January 7, 2020, the music industry lost a giant. Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist for the band RUSH, lost a three and and a half year battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. Neil will forever be one of the most influential rock drummers of all time. Over RUSH’s 40 year career, his drumming and thoughtful lyrics have been part of the soundtrack to millions of lives around the globe, and his passing has created a huge void.
When SFC Tim Whalen heard the news, he was shocked and saddened. As a lifelong RUSH fan, he felt compelled to do something to honor Neil and the band that has meant so much in his own life. He immediately knew the song “Time Stand Still” would be the perfect choice.
SFC Whalen relfects, "The lyrics to this song have always resonated deeply with me, and they show Neil’s heart. I wanted to showcase the deep humanity he had in his writing. The song is about life moving too fast, due to both things we can control and things we can’t, and the desire to hold onto something just a little longer. This is such a universal message, whether it be children growing up too fast, a loved one dying, or a soldier leaving home wondering if they’ll ever see their family again.”

My soldier son is the vocalist wearing glasses. So proud of this group and all that they do in support of all of our soldiers serving, and those who have served. They know how much great musicians have influenced the music they perform.
I'm a 64 year old Canadian who saw my first Rush concert in a hockey arena at age 14. I was able to hold the tears back through this whole song.... until the picture of Neil at the end. Then my 3 year old grandson says, "Grandad, why are you sad?". I said "you'll understand when you get older, when I introduce you to the music and lyrics of a band called Rush". To our US Army friends south of the border, all I can say is thank you. That was well done. Very well done indeed.
WOW. I’ve been a Soldier for 22 years. I’ve been a Rush fan all my life. This is special and means the world to me.
Leave it to the United States Military to give a proper homage to the greatest Prog Rock band in the World....RUSH, and the greatest Prog drummer and lyricist ever...the late, great “Professor”....Neil E. Peart...
This is the most appropriate use of my tax dollars I've seen in years!
Because there are no drums at all in this arrangement, the focus of this particular memorial performance turns to Neil Peart’s lyrics. The man deserves recognition as a great poet in his own right.
Speaking as a Canadian Rush fan (from Toronto) seeing these Americans in uniform playing this Lyrically beautiful song brought tears to me
As an Army Veteran, and a RUSH fan since I first heard the band's music in 1974, I was both proud and touched by this tribute to Neil. He was unquestionably the greatest drummer/percussionist there has ever been; as well as being a fantastic lyricist. RUSH has been my favorite band since I first heard their music when I was stationed overseas; and that has never changed. I was very blessed to see them in concert many, many times.
When the United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own”, posts a tribute on UA-cam in your memory, to your legacy...you know you lived your life right.
I’m a grown ass man in my tattoo studio, with tears streaming down my face.
As a Rush fan since 1977, I have to admit. This is the finest remake of a Rush song I have ever heard.
It's now three years since Neil has passed and I still cry listening to this. Amazing job . Thank you
This is an Englishman saluting the U.S. army, paying a heartfelt tribute to an amazing Canadian. Good job guys!👍👍👍
I’m ex-British Army and a lifelong Rush fan. So we’re brothers. Well, brothers, I’m a weeping mess and my 8 year old son has no idea why. I better tell him.
"Thank you" seems so inadequate. I'm sure all of Rush appreciates this. Close to tears with this beautiful rendition.
Neil wrote some of the most beautiful lyrics ever. This song is one of his masterpieces.
When the US Army does a tribute, you know you've lost a remarkable man. And I'm crying. Again. I may never stop....
Neil Peart is the only person who I never even met, who's passing actually made me cry. I have never cried over someone I didn't know personally, but being a huge Rush fan, and knowing what type of guy Neil was - a bright-eyed, eternal optimist with a heart of gold and the best drum skills on the planet.......and his lyrics! It just made me cry crocodile tears...... this tribute made the tears flow again.
Almost 2 years later ...and this performance still renders a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. Rest in peace, Neal Peart.
3 years later - it doesnt get any easier...
