I grow prickly pears on my farm. I blanch the fruit in almost boiling water for a few minutes and it gets rid of all the glaucids (small prickles). After this, I can handle them with my hand and not get prickled! It also makes them easier to peel as well, you just top and tail them, then cut them dorsally, and the skin peels right off!
Ok that sounds like a good method too. I guess it depends on what you want for the end product. To juice them as I was doing that would be an extra step. Most of my fruit doesn’t have many glochids if I am careful when I harvest. Cutting and dropping in blender is quick for me then just add a little water to blend. But for preparing fresh fruit to eat or even freezing fruit whole the hot water method would do well. Thanks for tips😊👍
You are fortunate to have a very accommodating variety of the cactus. The pears from my cactus have at least double the spine nodes per fruit and I have to spend a fair bit of effort to scrape, abrade, or scorch off the spines before I can handle them.
I learned a lot from your video, neat that you dry the mushed up prickly pear fruit, then dried can separate the fruit from the seed, the fruit made into powder, and the seed saved for other usage. Also, the chopping up the fruit and freezing it into ice cube trays to add to fruit drinks. I will try to remember this. It has also made me truly appreciate how much work, that the Native American women used to have to do in order to provide food year around in that harsh climate.

Hello yes it is old but I do get notifications when so one comments ☺️ This are prickly pear Cactus. If you lived by me I would give you one to start your own. They are easy to grow. But require full sun to bear good fruit.

Love the fruit. Only it is expensive. For £2get a punnet of six or seven. Bought few punnets for friends who had sensitive lungs and she ate it. Helps.
It does take a lot to process and actually I found even an easier way using the harvest right freeze dryer. I hope to make another UA-cam doing that. Can you grow in your area or can your friend?
peachmango pie yes I do that. I think I show that at end of video. If you want a thicker more concentrated juice a screen is better to start because this fruit has a lot of mucilage. But adding more water you can use squeeze cloth👍

I just planted a nopal that I got from my family, but not sure if its the same, since I have never noticed any of the prickly pear fruit. Does it perhaps go by a different name? Or where can I buy the plant?
Bonne Gomez Glad you enjoyed the video and that it was helpful😊 It is called prickly pear Cactus and there are different varieties. Here is a link I found that may help you. www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/cacti-succulents/prickly-pear/opuntia-cactus-varieties.htm It does take a few years from when you plant your Napale to have it get big enough to produce fruit. Hi- I am looking for some much needed information about prickly pears! They are one of my favorite fruits and I usually buy them at the store, red and green ones. A few months ago I pulled over on the side of the road to pick some wild prickly pears because I've never had the opportunity to eat them wild since I don't have my own plant and don't know anyone else who does either. I picked about 15 or so and did a bit of research to make sure it was safe to eat the wild ones and I found absolutely nothing about wild prickly pears being poisonous. Even though I didn't find a thing about them being dangerous, I still only I ate one that day just to be on the safe side. I was totally fine so the next day I decided to eat as much as I wanted since I love them so much. I probably ate about 12 of them or so spread out throughout that day, (yes I know it was a lot but like I said they are my favorite lol). I ate two more around 6 in the evening and within a few minutes I began feeling unwell. I spiked a fever and had chills out of nowhere. I didn't know if it was just a strange coincidence or if there was something wrong with the last two prickly pears that I ate or if there was pesticides on them or what?! I had no idea but it was a bit scary so I called Poison Control. They said there was nothing in their database about prickly pears being poisonous and not to worry about it. I have been rackhing my brain ever since trying to figure out what happened that day. I finally came across one tiny bit of information in a book someone had written that said some prickly pears can give you a temperature and the chills but they are still not poisonous and it only happens if you eat too many- too many being more than two or three depending on the person's tolerance. Apparently I must have an extremely high tolerance because I had a ton of them and felt fine all day until the last two I ate. My question is have you heard ANYTHING at all about prickly pears causing chills and a fever? I really wanted to plant my own cactus pear so I could grow prickly pears but now I am afraid to do it because of how sick it made me. I also prefer the wild ones over the store bought and really wanted to use the wild seeds but I don't know which wild seeds are safer thanothers. I know for sure of that the store-bought ones do not make people sick in any way because they have been cultivated in such a way as to prevent this from happening. However I'm so confused about which wild ones are edible and which are not because they say although all wild ones are edible, some do gives people chills and afever but at the same time I see people eat tons of these on UA-cam videos and never mention anything about chills and fever. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated as NO ONE seems to know anything about this.
Everly Green so sorry you had that experience😔 This information is new to me as well. I have never heard of getting fever from prickly pear. I did give some of my powder to a friend who had RA and she said it constipated her. Though normally it is the other way around and should help with bowel movements i think if too much is consumed and especially in powder form with not enough water that can happen. But as far as fevers I have not heard of that. Did you make sure they were all cleaned well and that you did not eat any that were possibly too ripe and fermented? You may not want to consume too many at one time. It is good to go slow with new things that your body is not familiar with. Where do you live? What zone are you?
I also had a similar experience the first time I tried it. Got heat exhaustion while working the day I drank the juice. But since then I have been doing big harvests once or twice a year and making prickly pear fruit syrup. Observe moderation in the quantity you take in. But it also may be that your body figures out how not to overreact after a while. After seeing this video I am interested in trying to make powder as well.
I have ground some into flour and added to my bread. It gives a nutty flavor. You can add to pancakes too. They are hard seeds. I have a stone grinder so that works for grinding them. Not sure how other grinders would do. I have a blendtec but have not tried in that yet. Once I try more things maybe I can do a video ☺️
A stone grinder can be purchased either electric or manual. I have an electric one to grind my seeds into flour. This is the kind I have though I purchased mine many years ago for a bit less. They are expensive. There are other options and also cheaper manually operated ones. wisementrading.com/food-storage/grain-mills/golden-grain-grinder/
Glad it was helpful😊We live in southern Virginia close to NC We have all 4 seasons here. It gets cold and sometimes snow. Gets below freezing but not enough to damage the prickly Pear. God bless 🌸
I think some ovens have a dehydration temperature mode where it can go low enough you don’t want it to go any higher than 135. But for the fruit I would probably Not go any higher than 115
Beautiful video. Do you sell any of your frozen cubes or other prickly pear products because I am very interested. If you do write me back here and even if you don’t. GoodLuck
Glad if the video was helpful to you. I do not market my products. Just for personal use. Prickly Pear is easy to grow. If you can get a Napale somewhere in your area. Just lay on fairly furtile ground and it will take root.
I noticed yours didn’t seem to have any seeds. When I wild craft them here in New Mexico, the fruit is much smaller and full of seeds. I’m assuming I should de-seed them before blending, but do you happen to know? It would sure be easier to leave them in and strain them out later.
Did you watch the whole video? Mine do have seeds. I blend with seeds. If you watch through you will see what I do with remaining pulp and seeds after extracting juice.
I suppose, I have never done that. The easiest and quickest way to start a new prickly pear cactus is to just plant one of the Naples leaves. You can just lay it on some worked mulch soil and it will grow. Do not have to bury it. Or you can stand the noodle upright and plant a few inches in the ground.
i have a eastern prickly pear i got flowers this year but they didnt turn into fruits it stayed green n dried up not sure what happen ild like to get one of your kind do u ship pads? i hae diabetes and hear its good for it let me know ty
Yarden Food Forest if you know anyone who has a prickly pear in their yard or any place. You can ask if you can have one Napale leaf. Just lay leaf down flat on soil or plant standing upright with 1/3 part in soil and it will grow. Just plant in sunny location where it has lots of room away from children because of thorns.
@@WDWanda6 this juice does have a lot of mucilage. I don’t know if a juicer would work. I do have a juicer and I’ve never tried it. I don’t think it would work as well, but you can find out.
@@jonathan_r_lee92 i don’t know actually, never tried to plant them. They would just be used for flour. I use the Nepali leaves to start a new plant. if I was going to save seed to plant, I probably wouldn’t use the dehydrated ones, but as I said, I don’t use seeds for planting. I just use the leaves much faster.😊
I never tried to plant seeds. The quickest way to grow is to plant the napale. You can literally just lay them on the ground and they will take root and grow.
I vacuum seal so I still have some from a few years ago I think. As long as they don’t get frost bite they should be fine for however long. Fruit really doesn’t go bad in freezer if sealed well. Maybe some freezer burn but 🤷♀️
At 1:14 instead of saying glochids (the hair-like spines on the cactus fruit) she called them prickers.....LOL. Gave me a good laugh. This was a very informative video. I never knew you could get so many uses out of cactus fruit. At 2:25, you said if you have one that is juicy and ripe and starting to ferment you don't use it. Why not? I would think those are the ones you would want.
Lol, you are right, the proper term I Is “glochids” but the do “prick”!! Glad is was informative though there are probably many more who are more learned than I. I made it to be helpful to others. Concerning your question about if a fruit “tuna” that may be to ripe and starting to ferment. For my purpose of extracting the juice I prefer not using one that is already fermenting. Though I do make kombucha and add the prickly pear fig juice for my second ferment. I believe I only came across 1 or 2 that were fermented. But I do want them to be very ripe and juicy. Hope that helps☺️
Looks like you have lots of helpers! ❤ Harvesting today from my prickly pears I planted 4 years ago, call them what you will, I have prickers in my thumb…my knee…and even on my upper lip. Good thing I was very careful, because it seems I could have come out worse. 😂 I so wish I had a dehydrator, as I’d love to add that powder you made to my smoothies. The only thing I knew to do with these, before your video, was to boil them for the juice and make jelly. It’s pretty. Tastes good. But I hardly ever use jelly. I’m rethinking my nice little harvest of maybe 50 or so pears. I was also wondering if you might use the skins to make jelly and use the rest as you’ve shown? Maybe I need to watch again, but I don’t recall you using the skins. Thoughts?
I believe what I did that year was dehydrated the seeds and peel together then sifted the seeds clean, storing them for later use. Then the Remaining powder would be the fleshly remains and peel. You can use that in smoothies for extra fiber. This year I have been using my freeze dryer. A new investment. I am actually just throwing the fruit while in my k-Tec blender and blending whole. Then pour on trays to freeze dry. Then sift. I do rinse the fruit, but do not bother taking any glochids out. It all gets powdered and sifted anyways. Simple and quick.
My daughter in Indiana has a prickly pear but not the pink. Can I make jelly from those? I want a prickly pear pink like yours. Can you recommend a place to buy one I don't know where you live. Can you recommend a place to buy a plant like yours? I would love to make jelly.
I have year to make an actual jelly. I mostly do the juice and freeze for smoothies. But I also thought about doing jelly this year. I don’t like to use a lot of sugar so need to experiment:) We live in central VA near NC
I have so many napales that I would give away but I have never done mail orders. Best to wait till spring now because if you are in a freeze zone the napale will not take root well now unless you start in greenhouse
I am sorry, but no I do not do enough to sell. I always have plenty of prickly pear Napales to plant if others wanted to start there own plant. But my time is limited to have a mailing business.😗 I offer free napale to locals. Where do you live?
@@deloresmiller6468 I do powder for kombucha but you can do juice also. I have also steamed juice out of fruit, filled jars, and placed jars upside down to seal. Surprisingly they have done fine staying sealed that way. It’s just not raw that way and taste is different.
@@Gods_creation.His_harvest Yes. I've noticed the rind tends to have a tangier flavor than the flesh, but that depends on the species of Opuntia. I bring in my experience into what I'm viewing. So, your brief elaboration makes for quicker understandings. Thank you.
@@bonsummers2657 For making raw juice it is quick and easy for me to just fill a blender with the fruit cut in half or quarters with a little water and blend. This makes it easier to strain out the juice as I showed on video. The skin and seeds are sifted out, dehydrated then dry sifted through various Screens. I find I have different by products that way. If we eat fresh we remove the peel. But I guess it just depends on the product you want and will use and the method that works best😊 God bless

They didn’t have a very good root system but had a good amount of stem that would produce more roots. So I am testing them to see how they do. Never hurts to try. God bless😊

Thank you! Blessings to you as well.
Hello 👋
I know this is an old video, but I'm hoping you'll sill see it.
Your cactus are gorgeous 😍 What type are they? I love how they are not so large and they grow a lot of fruit ❤ thank you for sharing this video!
Hello yes it is old but I do get notifications when so one comments ☺️
This are prickly pear Cactus. If you lived by me I would give you one to start your own. They are easy to grow. But require full sun to bear good fruit.
@Gods_creation.His_harvest ty for your reply! I'm not sure how I missed it. Oh, I would have so loved to receive this from you but I live in Nor Cal.
Your video is chalk full of info that I'll definitely utilize in the future. Ty again for sharing. God Bless & happy New Year 🙏🏼 ❤️ 😊
Thankyou
@@CherylFreeman-bf9rj your welcome 🤗
learned so much. Those are just about the biggest tunas I've ever seen. What is that? A wheel cactus?
Glad it was helpful! It is Prickly pear cactus. ☺️
Amazing, I have a lot of this fruit in our farm but I don’t use it like you,we only make a juice. Thank you so much for your great video
Your welcome, God bless🌺
Love the fruit. Only it is expensive. For £2get a punnet of six or seven.
Bought few punnets for friends who had sensitive lungs and she ate it. Helps.
It does take a lot to process and actually I found even an easier way using the harvest right freeze dryer. I hope to make another UA-cam doing that.
Can you grow in your area or can your friend?
Yes, I’ve would think it would be good for colds because it is high in vitamin C.😊
Awesome usefull video! Love it!! Question what can be done without all the sugar?
I put prickly pear in smoothies
Thanks, glad it was helpful! ☺️🌸
Hi. You can use a squeeze cloth/bag to get the juice faster and easier 😊 nice videos. I love aloe veras too.
peachmango pie yes I do that. I think I show that at end of video. If you want a thicker more concentrated juice a screen is better to start because this fruit has a lot of mucilage. But adding more water you can use squeeze cloth👍
What an amazing video!! You should have more, much more subscribers, I don't understand.... Anyways, thank you so much for taking the time. You've inspired me to buy some day a dehydrator and one of those special blenders. God bless. Ps. I just planted a nopal that I got from my family, but not sure if its the same, since I have never noticed any of the prickly pear fruit. Does it perhaps go by a different name? Or where can I buy the plant?
Bonne Gomez Glad you enjoyed the video and that it was helpful😊
It is called prickly pear Cactus and there are different varieties. Here is a link I found that may help you. www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/cacti-succulents/prickly-pear/opuntia-cactus-varieties.htm
It does take a few years from when you plant your Napale to have it get big enough to produce fruit.

Everly Green so sorry you had that experience😔
This information is new to me as well.
Yes you can get chills and fever from to many. Same happened to me. Looked it up and it's a normal thing. Not pleasant, but normal.
Great video, thanks, lot of work on the fruit. Then the editing I,m sure.
Yes😊Hope it was helpful, God bless🌺
I'd love to hear about how you've used the seeds!
@@Gods_creation.His_harvest I'll have to look up stone grinders, I don't know anything about them. Unless you mean like a molcajete.
A stone grinder can be purchased either electric or manual. I have an electric one to grind my seeds into flour. This is the kind I have though I purchased mine many years ago for a bit less. They are expensive. There are other options and also cheaper manually operated ones.

This is so amazingly informative! Thank you! Where are you located? What are the climate/soil conditions like?
Glad it was helpful😊We live in southern Virginia close to NC
We have all 4 seasons here. It gets cold and sometimes snow. Gets below freezing but not enough to damage the prickly Pear. God bless 🌸
Soil is clay/loam depending. I make a lot of my own soil by adding compost. But prickly pear is easy to grow.
Great video! Do you sell cuttings?
I am not in the business at the moment. Where do you live?
got a tutorial like this for the pads to get juice, seeds and powder 🤔
@@njroyalty No not yet but hope to☺️
Can you put the fine powder in capsules
I would think so
I like how you make use of the pulp and seeds. Any way to dehydrate using the oven?
I think some ovens have a dehydration temperature mode where it can go low enough you don’t want it to go any higher than 135. But for the fruit I would probably Not go any higher than 115
Can you tell me what the name is of the variety that you grow. They have prolific fruiting and much more compact than I am used to here is Australia.
I believe it’s the Indian variety with red fruit. This variety also has pink & yellow fruit. Mine are the red fruit variety.
Where is this located? What's the history of that variety? It's Opuntia ficus-indica?
We live in Virginia. USA
If you watch through you will see what I do with remaining pulp and seeds after extracting juice.
thanks..I can plant seeds before dehydrating?
I suppose, I have never done that. The easiest and quickest way to start a new prickly pear cactus is to just plant one of the Naples leaves. You can just lay it on some worked mulch soil and it will grow. Do not have to bury it. Or you can stand the noodle upright and plant a few inches in the ground.
i have a eastern prickly pear i got flowers this year but they didnt turn into fruits it stayed green n dried up not sure what happen ild like to get one of your kind do u ship pads? i hae diabetes and hear its good for it let me know ty
I am not in that business of shipping pads. Where do you live? State?
Where are you located and are you still willing to share a cutting? I’m so sad our new house has no cactus and I want to start growing some.
Near Danville VA
Where do you live?
Beautiful..I have never seen this in my life, I want to grow them. Where can I purchase them? Thanks
@@Familyadventures727 Okay thanks so much, I will definitely do this.
Amazing, I can’t wait to do this in Jamaica where the clime allows me to grow and harvest rather than buy from the market.
That sounds great! Blessings in Jamaica ☺️
Could I use a juicer to do the same thing? Or is it better to do it your way for prickly pears?
@@WDWanda6 this juice does have a lot of mucilage. I don’t know if a juicer would work. I do have a juicer and I’ve never tried it. I don’t think it would work as well, but you can find out.
@@WDWanda6 also the seeds are very hard and you don’t want to crush them in juicer
Silly question, are their seeds still viable after being in the dehydrator? 🤔
What is preservation method to longer self life
Freeze drying is best if you can afford a freeze dryer. This will allow longer shelf life
You are wonderful, thank-you, if you sell this I hope you sell alot
Dolores Cook thank you I just process for myself and share if I can.
Can you plant these seeds after this process and will they germinate?
I never tried to plant seeds. The quickest way to grow is to plant the napale. You can literally just lay them on the ground and they will take root and grow.
So beautiful
Thank you, Hope it was helpful, God bless 😊🌸
Me want your WhatsApp number
I'm wondering if you would sell some
What growing zone are you in? Also what state?
I am in mid VA. Near the NC line. Zone 7b
How long do they last in the freezer?
I vacuum seal so I still have some from a few years ago I think. As long as they don’t get frost bite they should be fine for however long. Fruit really doesn’t go bad in freezer if sealed well. Maybe some freezer burn but 🤷♀️
Did you cook them before you started processing?
No, they are raw. 😊
This process might work equally well for mulberries.
What variety of Opuntia do you have?
I am not sure. It is the prickly pear cactus with red fruit.
Lol, you are right, the proper term I
Is “glochids” but the do “prick”!!
Then the
Remaining powder would be the fleshly remains and peel.
My sister and I are hardcore into seeds and plants and want to make jelly.
I have year to make an actual jelly. I mostly do the juice and freeze for smoothies. But I also thought about doing jelly this year. I don’t like to use a lot of sugar so need to experiment:)
We live in central VA near NC
I have so many napales that I would give away but I have never done mail orders. Best to wait till spring now because if you are in a freeze zone the napale will not take root well now unless you start in greenhouse
I would think asking as fruit is ripe it would be fine to use for jelly. There are different kinds of prickly pear and some do not turn red
Do you sale this products. I would love to buy from you
I am sorry, but no I do not do enough to sell. I always have plenty of prickly pear Napales to plant if others wanted to start there own plant. But my time is limited to have a mailing business.😗

Do you have a online store selling this nutrition powder?
No I do not have an online store. Just make enough for my needs at this time. God bless🌱
Can I order some of the dry prickly pear powder?
Sorry, I do not sell the powder and actually I mostly make raw juice and freeze now.
What do you use the powder
I use in smoothies, drinks & kombucha
@@Familyadventures727 do you put the powder or the juice in the kombucha? Also do you know if you can pressure can the juice to use later?
@@deloresmiller6468 I do powder for kombucha but you can do juice also.
I have also steamed juice out of fruit, filled jars, and placed jars upside down to seal. Surprisingly they have done fine staying sealed that way. It’s just not raw that way and taste is different.
You're keeping the skin on?
Have you watched the whole process?
@@bonsummers2657 I am not sure what species this is. It is common on our area.
Do you sell & ship the powder form?
No I do not. I mostly just juice it and make ice cubes to put in smoothies. I do not have enough to sell nor do I have a need to. Hope you can find a good source if you cannot grow yourself. There are places you can buy the powder.
