I have had and have both ferrari's and ducatis for over 24 years. I learned a long time ago to take anything the dealers say about belts with a pinch of salt. For example on a ferrari it was originally said change belts after 3 years in the UK, at the same time they were saying 5 years in the USA. Then they changed it from 3 to 5 years. Now owners wait until between 5 and 8 years. Its the same with ducati, that's why it's called a ducati tax. Every time I have checked desmo valves they have never needed adjusting.
As for the belts, it's your choice as to when they are changed. So yours had gone over the time suggested by ducati by 5 years. And I bet them belts and tensioner were looking as good as new when removed , also I bet the valves needed very little attention.
Hey I'm just saying, that's real world owning and working on Italian belt driven machines. Not seen many belts let go because the belts were old and weak, I have see tensioners loosen after a long and short period. Italians🙄

Yeah, exactly this. I guess it's better to lean towards caution (and more revenue) than to up the intervals and risk issues. Also these things are (mostly) never used as daily drivers, and tend to be well looked after anyway. Thanks for your comment!

Tbh, if you have Ducati and didnt know the service intervals for belts, you dont know about Ducati's :-)
Ive just done mine, DIY job, easy and quick doing rhe actusl belt swap on a Ducati Monster 1100 Evo. The longest part is dismantling the bike to the point you can get to the belts, i.e. tank off, an exhaust pipe off. Not a hard job but the most time consuming part. Am i going to pay Ducati or a mechanic to do that? Nope, why would i. As i say, belt swap really easy, 10 minutes max once got access.
Oh and you dont even need Ducati belts, there are other options, but as i was doing them myself, i paid the approx 100% premium over other options and did get official Ducati belts from a dealer, but thats simply a choice you can make doung this yourself.

I just had a 10,000 mile service on my HD Street Glide in the US. Not a special service, just an ordinary check up. $725 USD. Considering you had a timing belt change, your service charge was a bargain.

Learn to do your own maintenance on your Harley. I did and really enjoy working on my bike at my pace. There’s a lot of good info on UA-cam. I even swapped out my cam and oil pump. Take your time and pay attention.

Sounds cheap the labour, are you sure they did the valve clearances. Also, I noticed they've not changed the spark plugs ?

I think it's pretty shocking what these dealers charge for servicing, lets face it most bikes arent ridden that much and tend to be well looked after, I just don't know how they can justify the prices. I have a multistrada 1260s 2018 model with only 5000 miles and the dealer in glasgow wanted £480 for an annual service after telling them I had already changed the oil, filter and flushed the brake/clutch fluid myself, it's shocking

  • @nr3157

It's not bad considering that you saved a bunch of money doing oil changes yourself. On Harley Davidson the first 1,000 mile service can be 500 dollars then 400 for the next service at 5,000 miles.
I heard the Diavel V4 maintenance is supposed to be much more affordable because the service schedule at the dealer is spread out farther apart than on your bike. This is assuming that you continue to do basic things yourself like, oil changes and break fluid flush.

    • @TABonTV

Aside from superbikes with a stratospheric red line, it's about time bike manufacturers showed more enthusiasm about the use of gear driven cams and hydraulic valve adjustment. Too much of a cash cow to slaughter, most likely. A noisier top end wouldn't bother me in the least.
