Just this morning we were talking about monk, and how sad I was that EW changed monk enough that your old monk leveling guide wasn't as useful as the others have been. Then an hour later my friend sends me this! Very much appreciate these videos you do, they are so very helpful to beginners.
Monk leveling 1 to 90 skills guide but every time he says greased lightning the video gets 5% faster. Phenomenal as always, and makes me want to go back and start leveling monk again now that my machinist is past 50 and can do anything other than leveling roulette to get some extra experience. I like that you mentioned Monk being a fast job but also a consistent job. its a rhythm that you keep the entire fight even during your burst phases. there is little to no frantic double weaving even during burst windows and when i realized that i became more comfortable taking time and planning where to begin the combo again after a rush which was one of the biggest hassles i needed to learn getting used to the rework. Very good guide and I really look forward to your other ones.
It's a very important note. Other jobs have similar speed as I bring up but that extra 5% is huge. it forces most people to do the suggested single weave openers so you don't speed up at all. But you never slow down. NIN is this flurry of different attacks all over so when you are out of the opener it doesn't feel 15% faster.
Desided to level a monk after seeing Stormblood trailer. By far Monk has the most complicated rotation I ever performed. Even standing still and fighting a target dummy makes me clench my teeth in concentration, its just CRAZY how hard monk is compared to other classes. You need to have lightning fast thinking to perfectly withstand this constant brainstorm of desisions. I think I overheated my brains after playing monk for a few hours.
I picked up Monk from level 1 after the expansion and it was a lot of fun to level it up! And then I got to Perfect Balance and stopped understanding everything... And then I got Formless Fist... And then after that Beast Chakras... And stopped leveling at 60 because my confidence with the job completely left me lmao I took a break from the job thinking to myself "I should wait for Wesk to put out his guide and I'll pick it up again". And here we are! Thank you so much for your work Wesk, super appreciated you're the best!!!
I'm a caster main who's just dipping her toes into melee with MNK, and I've been watching the segments on the skills as I get them. This is legitimately so useful. Every time I think I won't be able to get it and then I try it out a bunch and slowly get used to it, and then I get something new that I dont understand. I'm lvl 50 now, the rotation with Perfect Balance has me stumped, but now I know that in time and with help of this video, I will be able to conquer this job!
Monk is quite possibly my favorite dps job ever!!! Im so happy I got it to 90 second after arcanist. I can’t wait for this guide to help new monks start out on their monastic journey :))

I didn't even know greesed lightning could get even... greesier, so muscle memory is going to be important.

really organized, informational, and clear cut video. def deserve more subs. Even with it being fast paced and a little complicated being a beginner monk player i still will need to practice rotations but this explanation definitely gives me an understanding of why the forms are important muscle memory and how to learn how to do my rotations. thanks a lot!
even if i dont get the rotations down correctly right away i can still know what they are and how to do them in order and such have a broad example of the pacing i suppose as i progress to level 50 and above

Here's something I've found very helpful for Thunderclap. I have it on my bars twice - once as the skill itself, and once as a mouseover macro. This makes it much easier, at least for me, to reliably gap close to the boss while also being able to rush to wherever without having to futz with this game's fussy targeting. I just started playing, and have been trying different jobs, but this is by far my favorite! I'm only at lvl 23, but your guide is EXTREMELY helpful! I was so confused with meditation and Chakra as I've been trying to figure out how to build it up mid-battle. Now i know not to worry about that yet. And looking at the combos once I become monk makes me even happier with this job. Thank you for such a great video!
Duuude I was waiting for this. I've been playing as Monk from level 1 and leveling it (nearly lvl 70 now). This explained a lot in the way a moron like me can understand - like WHY bootshine/dragon-kick and WHY this rotation I keep seeing. This is gonna help a lot. To the training dummies! (My goal isn't to become some super awesome poggers Monk. I just enjoy it way more now than I did with earlier versions of the Monk. It's super fun even if I'm not optimal, but I wanna improve and not be a burden on the party at the very least.)
So glad this video dropped! I've been running the "Double Solar" opener tactic so far, and jumped straight to your opener images to see how what I've been doing compares. I do find your Solar/Lunar opener much more manageable than what I've been doing; I push TK/PR to the 20 minute mark using my current opener. Regardless, I can't wait to watch the video fully to hear your thoughts.
They're both good but Double Solar opener usually more optimal. Lunar/Solar is very much more user friendly for the entire job flow so is why I went with it
Got back to my lvl 50 monk after getting 90 with healer and tank. This really helped me understand better some of the flow of the monk. I still sometimes miss or do extra action but now I know what I did and why its bad. Thank you!
Easy to follow and not overwhelming like other guides! Thank you very much! It was helpful to see how and why to use moves instead of just word vomit on skills in some giant rotation. Understanding 'why' I'm hitting buffs and how they chain was important. Phenomenal guide =)

Thank you for this guide. I was always afraid to try MNK because of the "complicated rotation" but I loved the glam options (so many unique ones) so I dove in to at least level it for my 80 challenge. You broke it down really well which is super important with how all of these skills build on one another. Personally, this is so far one of the most "involved" classes I play in terms of how the attacks and abilities interact with each other, so it's super important to have a strong foundation like you built with the Dragon Kick/Bootshine combo which you emphasized even before Perfect Balance. I ended up loving MNK and blazed through Bozja and got to 80 and felt like a kid at the end of a birthday party. Right now I'm only going up to 80 to give other classes a chance but I'm super excited to get back to it and continue on. Thank you again for the wonderful breakdown and making MNK much less intimidating.
Monk was the second to last job i tried and it's hands down my favorite! Very fun and smooth and flows nicely once you get over the initial skill floor of getting how it's supposed to work

Nice! I was waiting for this. I played some monk in ShB, got some extremes cleared with it. I really enjoyed the hecticness of the positionals. I was thinking on perhaps moving to it as my main melee DPS instead of SAM but I don't quite get the job. My P2S dummy tries leave me at 14% at the end when with SAM I either get it killed or at worst at 0.4%. Granted, my monk weapon is slightly worse than my SAM weapon and I'm bound to have less damage as MNK, but that is way too much for the stage in my search for the rotation to be anywhere close to the solution.
@@cyan_2169 Thank you. I knew of it, but last time I had checked, all resources I found linked seemed obsolete (I have really weird and bad luck). I stopped the video before reaching it level 50 to try work on monk rotation on my own and I've managed to go from taking the P2S dummy down to 14% to just killing it in time. Last touch to get it down from the 0.9% I got it with my own development (which is surely be very close or not the same to I'll see) has been from this video clearing my misunderstanding the tornado kick needed three different chakra. Now back to watch all I didn't see to find if there's anything else I missed. I also got the feeling monk may be among the less forgiving jobs. It's a feeling from my time trying to find the new workings, so it may well be mistaken.
This is so helpful @_@ I had started leveling MNK in ShB and got to 60ish just before Endwalker. I've been trying to figure it out organically ever since, and just haven't. Thank you Wesk, as always. You do awesome work.
The new flow of Monk feels so so so much less clunky. Positional complexity (while unique) always felt more frustrating to play. Still having them but now less and having a combo being your complexity is more fun (imo) :D Love these new guides, your stuff is what I ALWAYS reference. Keep it up

Ngl, I did not realize just now little Monk gets from 52-60. Which is fair given the rework and just how much is going on during level 60. Also, I am loving the new Monk. It’s a lot more fun and Blitzes are just a really cool mechanic. Edit: Ok using Twin snake immediately during the second perfect balance is something so simple, but would have fixed so many of my problems where I felt like I kept dropping the buff.
If I see you in a dungeon with MNK I'm 100% expecting you to pull out some Marvel 3-level Wesker combos tbh. Godly video I always watch when I need a fast pick me up.

I wasn't sure how much of a priority this job might have in your list, so I was positively surprised to see it appear so soon. ^^ I've played Monk before EW and struggled with getting into it after the updates, to the point I was considering taking another job with my alt. But your guide gave me a bit more clarity in the whole Beast Gauge thing and the Riddle of Somethings and I think I'm going to do better now. It alpso helped to understand why there are two basically opposing openers flying around. :)

Excellent as always WeskAlber! Small nitpick. Thunderclap doesn't truly teleport you. You move across the ground really quickly. It seems pedantic, but it is an important distinction. If there's a big pit into a pool of tears between you and your target, you will zip right off the edge and fall into it. You don't bamf across. (Looking at you, Dohn Mheg!)
I love your old videos, and i love these new ones looking forward to you getting to my mains so i can look over them and decide what to play as next. I'm always jumping from class to class every 3 levels or so, can't stick with anything
THANK YOU for pointing out you can/should use party buffs on just the tank during dungeon pulls!!! Sprouts need to learn not to hesitate using their cooldowns regularly
Oh my god, I can believe I didnt notice that elixir field was a higher potency than celestial revolution. Id been useing the latter for lunar nadi in single target.
This guide was absolutely amazing! I went from not sure if I want to play MNK to realizing I should have been playing MNK all along. I love how busy the rotation is.
I love these Karaoke openers. It really gives a good idea of how busy a job can be. I can't wait for some of the really buttons mashing jobs like Gunbreaker, you're gonna have to spit bars to get through continuation windows :p

I decided to lev up other jobs a year ago. I don't think I could have done it with out your guides. AWESOME. Monk is one of my last, and so far most difficult to get down. That being said, I noticed the opener from the Balance to be different. I don't know the mechs well enough to know the benefits of each and how they will affect my play. Comments? (ps- I'm still using yours..)
In terms of attention there's this shift when you hit Brotherhood in 8-man content where the karaoke in my head is like, ....(Brotherhood, Perfect Balance) Dragon Kick (Riddle of Wind) Bootshine (Maybe The Forbidden Chakra) Dragon Kick (Maybe The Forbidden Chakra) Elixir Field (Maybe The Forbidden Chakra) Bootshine (Perfect Balance, Maybe The Forbidden Chakra).... and so on.
Currently levelling monk and thank GOD for this video or I would have no clue lmao Managing the combinations is actually really fun when you get used to it I think i prefer it to other dps who follow a fixed rotation
This is going to take a few watches to understand, and then some. Kinda wish I hadn't left Monk til last! My only suggestion for future videos is to stick to a target dummy when it's single-target, because the changes of scenery and random mobs can make it a little confusing.
I was intimidated at first, thinking Monk would be a tough job because of the speed. Once I started getting a feel for how long the timers for Disciplined Fist and Demolish flowed, it honestly became the easiest
Fucking bless you, man. Just started getting into Monk purely because of a good glam set. That nerf to riddle of earth sucks though, specifically because of the massive cooldown. I imagine it used to be fun, using it on demand and weaving it in actively. Now it's just a defensive like the others to be used sparingly.
Six sided star is actually a really useful skill because it lets you melee LB essentially for free. Using a melee LB normally costs 7-8s of your uptime, but if you're essentially stunned for 5s anyway you don't need to worry about anything.

I like that monk is still a "weird" job. Like, it does all the same types of things that other jobs do. It just does it all in a unique monk way.

My P2S dummy tries leave me at 14% at the end when with SAM I either get it killed or at worst at 0.4%. Granted, my monk weapon is slightly worse than my SAM weapon and I'm bound to have less damage as MNK, but that is way too much for the stage in my search for the rotation to be anywhere close to the solution.

I stopped the video before reaching it level 50 to try work on monk rotation on my own and I've managed to go from taking the P2S dummy down to 14% to just killing it in time. Last touch to get it down from the 0.9% I got it with my own development (which is surely be very close or not the same to I'll see) has been from this video clearing my misunderstanding the tornado kick needed three different chakra. Now back to watch all I didn't see to find if there's anything else I missed.
I also got the feeling monk may be among the less forgiving jobs. It's a feeling from my time trying to find the new workings, so it may well be mistaken.

This is so helpful @_@ I had started leveling MNK in ShB and got to 60ish just before Endwalker. I've been trying to figure it out organically ever since, and just haven't. Thank you Wesk, as always. You do awesome work.
The new flow of Monk feels so so so much less clunky. Positional complexity (while unique) always felt more frustrating to play. Still having them but now less and having a combo being your complexity is more fun (imo) :D

this guide is amazing! my static group is requesting my switch to melee for savage content. Been leveling monk and its been a little confusing. Ngl, I did not realize just now little Monk gets from 52-60. Which is fair given the rework and just how much is going on during level 60.
Also, I am loving the new Monk. It’s a lot more fun and Blitzes are just a really cool mechanic.
Edit: Ok using Twin snake immediately during the second perfect balance is something so simple, but would have fixed so many of my problems where I felt like I kept dropping the buff.
If I see you in a dungeon with MNK I'm 100% expecting you to pull out some Marvel 3-level Wesker combos tbh. Godly video I always watch when I need a fast pick me up.

I wasn't sure how much of a priority this job might have in your list, so I was positively surprised to see it appear so soon. ^^ I've played Monk before EW and struggled with getting into it after the updates, to the point I was considering taking another job with my alt. But your guide gave me a bit more clarity in the whole Beast Gauge thing and the Riddle of Somethings and I think I'm going to do better now. It alpso helped to understand why there are two basically opposing openers flying around. :)

Small nitpick. Thunderclap doesn't truly teleport you. You move across the ground really quickly. It seems pedantic, but it is an important distinction. If there's a big pit into a pool of tears between you and your target, you will zip right off the edge and fall into it. You don't bamf across. (Looking at you, Dohn Mheg!)

I decided to lev up other jobs a year ago. I don't think I could have done it with out your guides. AWESOME. Monk is one of my last, and so far most difficult to get down. That being said, I noticed the opener from the Balance to be different. I don't know the mechs well enough to know the benefits of each and how they will affect my play. Comments? (ps- I'm still using yours..)

This is going to take a few watches to understand, and then some. Kinda wish I hadn't left Monk til last! My only suggestion for future videos is to stick to a target dummy when it's single-target, because the changes of scenery and random mobs can make it a little confusing.
The problem is that's not always possible. Skills change. Effects change. At that point I should go over the 90 rotation and nothing else.
I was intimidated at first, thinking Monk would be a tough job because of the speed. Once I started getting a feel for how long the timers for Disciplined Fist and Demolish flowed, it honestly became the easiest
At max level, I find double weaving really unreliable and just clip way too much. 20% is really, really fast.

That nerf to riddle of earth sucks though, specifically because of the massive cooldown. I imagine it used to be fun, using it on demand and weaving it in actively. Now it's just a defensive like the others to be used sparingly.
RoE has had many functional iterations since 4.0. The current one isn’t the worst, but I agree the long CD doesn’t feel great.
Six sided star is actually a really useful skill because it lets you melee LB essentially for free. Using a melee LB normally costs 7-8s of your uptime, but if you're essentially stunned for 5s anyway you don't need to worry about anything.
