In 1972 I used to 'commute' to work daily from Nelson airport aboard a Okanagan Helicopters Bell Jet Ranger. I worked for Reid, Collins, and Associates and we were surveying along the proposed hydro right-of-way about to be built. Many times we had to jump out of the helicopter as the pilot skillfully hovered a few feet above the ground as there was no level land to disembark. At the end of the day we signaled the helicopter pilot our location by stacking all our unused cans of Krylon spray paint in a pile, popping a small hole in the base of one can with a hatchet, igniting it and allowing the jet of flame to hit the pile of cans. When the cans cooked off the fireball could be seen for miles, alerting the pilot to our exact location.

A very enjoyable trip, Jeff. It reminded me of the days flying Lancasters to Cessna 150s & 172's. In this flight, I had a 'deja vu' trip with you. Thank you very much for the experience.

As a former resident of Castlegar, I never saw you show our GREAT KEENLYSIDE DAM! DID IT JUS DISAPEAR somewher. Maybe just collapsed and flooded out the village downstream?

I have lived in Nakusp and know your area very well, Many car trips through there. It is hard to believe the volume of water held up by a few dams.Nelson airport doesn't have a lot of options if something goes wrong

There are a few "dangerous approach at Castlegar" videos online, but that S-turn approach looks pretty demanding! Do commercial flights take a big loop over Kootenay Lake land from the east? Or are there any?

Castlegar has commercial scheduled passenger service. They approach from the east along the Kootenay River and from the west along lower Arrow Lake. Nelson has no scheduled service. The approach in Nelson is to cross midfield from the south, then turn either left for 04 or right for 22. They want you to stay out over the lake (river if you want to call it that) to avoid buzzing the city. It's a little tight but not too bad when you get used to it.
