Local state of emergency declared (36”-48” expected this weekend)

  • Today it was more clean up blower, work loader, work hand work on the roof. We have multiple crews working at multiple locations clearing roofs in preparation for the heavy snowfall that we expect this weekend. The county was officially declared a local state of emergency a couple days ago there is a big avalanche to the north blocking the highway. Hopefully crews will get that cleared soon, but it’s going to be a daunting task with that particular area as there was a metal fence that protected the hillside that all came down with the avalanche so it will be a tough go cleaning that up, anyway, we are looking at a lot of snow. This weekend could be very wet which could cause some additional problems that we haven’t seen yet this year, so will keep an eye out for that also more of the same with the snow pit. Stay tuned for any upcoming developments with that we are doing our best to work with the folks but we don’t seem to be getting anywhere fast. Hopefully I can get some of the city officials that I have emailed to actually return an email, a lot of these folks don’t necessarily respond very quickly unless it’s something that’s on their agenda than they want answers from you immediately. One way or another I am going to teach these folks to understand that they work for us and they are here to provide a service to us taxpayers and residence of the town whether they like it or not the message is going to start going out and if they’ve got an answer emails on a daily basis because they do get it then so be it.

An investment in a snow melter would take that dump completely out equation! I know your exhausted at this point but keep at it! April is right around the corner. It’s going to be a pretty amazing site when all that snow starts melting.

I lived in Mammoth for over five years and know how tough the snow removal business can be. We saw a drought that ran into February in the early Nineties. It caused a lot of small businesses to tank and private contractors such as yourself lost their rigs to repossession.
The restaurants opened soup kitchens to feed those that stayed and prayed, but I left and that was my last tour in Mammoth. Sending good thoughts your way. I hope they’re wrong about this weekend.

Weather does not look promising. I checked with NWS in Reno and Fresno, what I've been able to extrapolate between the two is heavy rain up to about 8,000 elevation which will cause severe flooding along the west slopes of the Sierra where the snowpack between 2,000 and 5,000 ft will be melted down by all the heavy rain. The forecast above 8,000 ft is 4-6 FEET of snow through this weekend; the velocity of the jet streak is supposed to produce winds along the ridges of 75-120 mph -- stronger toward Tahoe Basin, but because Mammoth Mtn sits in that gap in the Sierra between Fresno and the crest, the summit could potentially be on the high side of those wind speeds. Gonna be ugly the next few days starting Thursday.

One would like to think in times like these, everyone would work together for the betterment of the community and the safety of all, but greed and money seem to always win. Living on the Gulf Coast of Florida, we see the same after hurricanes, where the community comes together to help their neighbors but selfishness and greed always play a role. It looks like all your accounts need to help put pressure on the city council to help get things done. Also maybe you can find a land owner and open up a new pit of your own. Or maybe with the addition of a new loader you might want to get a snow melter and completely bypass the city and the other contractors. Get one big enough to be towed behind a 3 axle dump truck to really melt some snow. Or a couple of smaller units that can be towed behind a 1 ton. So you can use the skid steers and clean up multiple accounts at once.

I’ve been in the landscaping and snow removal business for over twenty years. Started with just plow trucks and skid steers and got into operating loaders. We’ve had a couple Cat loaders (908 and 924). They were very fuel hungry compared with our Volvo loaders (L60 and L70). They are so smooth running engines and quiet too. The one thing that I loved about the Cat loaders is the forward/reverse switch is right on the loader joystick controller. I’m surprised that you don’t use any snowpushers on your loaders. We’ve had the snow pushers that are chained to the front cutting edge of the bucket. Then we got snowpushers that mount to the hydraulic quick attachment. Much better for back blading. Only downside is if you have to move snow or use the bucket to scrape ice/hard packed snow off the pavement, can’t easily unchain the pusher. I haven’t had it become an issue frequently, and most of our accounts are within 5 miles and easily go back to change to bucket when the need arises. One of the best things about our Volvo loaders was the boom suspension that allows the front arm to float. Really makes the machine ride so much better and doesn’t bounce around like a standard rigid boom arm.

Will it be a few more feet of snow or a deluge of rain? This weekends storm is coming from the tropics bringing a lot of warm air with it and some models are showing the snow level rising as high as 9,500 feet. However the models often overestimate how quickly the cold air gets scoured out so its possible the cold air could hang on long enough for a big wet snowfall. Either way its going to be a mess heavy wet snow on top of cold dry snow will create extreme avalanche danger and greatly increase the load on roofs. If it rains alot the streets could turn into canals and basements could flood.

I'm wondering why you don't use the roof rakes which have the sheets for the snow to travel along as compared to just the roof rake with the paddle on it? Some of those buildings seem to Warrant the need for a really decent lift bucket which might make things easier and safer as well

3 more feet of snow would be outrageous and never seen on east coast. We cant even imagine such snowfall and lived in Maine 3 yrs. Amazing workers. 5 stars.

Buffalo,NY was hammered by around 80” of snow earlier this winter. I do know that they’re kind of an anomaly for the amount of snow they get compared to other places on the east coast. West wind off Lake Erie is relentless for lake effect snow. A few miles Outside of that main lake effect snow band places only get a foot of snow and sometimes even less.

You've got me trying to bite into my phone at The Warming Hut...
The cat's the only one around and without that evolutionary opposing thumb I'm still safe from the guys in white coats... She does, on occasion ask me to dial up her friends at ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals). She knows her name and shows it well, and so is most cautious to tread lightly about me with those soft paws and 10" claws (actually a full 1/2" apiece but added together, hey ! )....
So all that said, her name is " Soup Stock". Yup, that's for real.

Bro, take some metal barrels, fill them with wood and cardboard, little gas, stick it by those huge snow piles and light it.
It'll start to melt the snow within 10-15ft radius. Have a bobcat readjust them

Your right we all need to call the state of Cali. Gov. office and Pres. office snow removal funding was alotted for what you are doing. I'm going to contact them who is the State Rep for Mammoth Lakes area never mind the news stations know they will broadcast it all good or bad. Keep up the good work If God is for you who can be against you. At 78yrs old to see what you guys have to put up with is upsetting. I have to go in my prayer closet 1:23am wed here in the high desert. May God Bless you and the family and all your worker's.

As soon as you mentioned disagreements in the past I'm sure you know why you didn't get a text. Local officials better understand that people are beginning to get their voice back and I'm sure there's some kickback money that'll be mentioned when they're voted out. Good luck 💪✌️

What is happening to the building materials on-site? Can the drywall still be used or is it a write-off? And the lumber? The moisture level in it must be really high.
And what about the snow when the temperature is rising and it turns into water? Is there sufficient run-off or will it be flash floods all over?

no trucking, puts your clients in a tough spot. If you have no more room for snow, what do your clients do? I bet they are tempted to go to other crews who do get the 'inside' scoop on when the pit is open. Seems very dubious and sketchy.
Also the roofs look horrid? Do most homeowners just chance it and not get them removed?
