- On this video, we started our day with a Subaru recovery guy ended up over the island off of Main Street after getting him out at around 3 AM we went to moving some snow. It really never stopped snowing all day. It was super heavy I would say we got, possibly 36 inches in 24 hours we definitely will be surpassing. Mammoth‘s all-time record. I would look for headlines in the next day or two in the news for that later on in the day we got a call from a tour bus company they had their bus in a pickle Plow Brothers came to the rescue and we were able to get that bus recovered fairly easily. Take a look and see how our day went.

This is around 8500ft or so, where wet Pacific storms dump most of their load. Mammoth ski resort was built *there* for a reason, but entire High Sierra (8 to 14k ft) wrings out weather systems. It's perpetual desert East of Sierras as a result.

I just came from a news report of San Bernardino county and all the comments were berating the locals for not being prepared for being snowed in or out for weeks.
That's kind of you to let them know they're doing great work. A woman from Quebec (of course) came into a live stream two days ago and asked us why we couldn't handle all the snowfall, then told us how they have snowstorms every week. Ugh, the Quebecoise...some are so arrogant it's like they're American instead of Canadian! lol
All over the California mountain ranges, these crews have all reached their breaking point, and it's kind of you to boost their morale.
I'm sixty three years old. I've lived in minnesota all my life. I've seen my share of major snow storms. I've never seen anything like what you're dealing with. That is unreal. I hope everybody's safe.

Born raised in Wisconsin, I seen many blizzards etc and -20 below , I live in Northern California now for 40 years , I love the snow , I go u to tahoe every month to ski ! This storm is not the norm , after this winter we’ll be in a drought again for 5-10 years 🌬️
When this Winter is done, the town of Mammoth Lakes owes your and all snow removal crews a Hawaiian VACATION my friend. Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!
I'm 97 and lived in mammoth for 104, and I remember back in 1871 when it snowed on us this bad. My papa and ma had to use all the bulls and horses to move the snow. All 17 of my brothers have to help, too. It was crazy. Now we have all those trucks and blowers. You guys have no idea how easy you have it.

The amount of snow is insane
If this amount of snow is insane, then what is Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort's seasonal snowfall record of 800 inches? That's over 65 feet. They are over 600 inches of seasonal snowfall now. Also if this is insane, then what was the 1140 inches of seasonal snowfall that fell on Mt. Baker Ski Area, Washington in 1998-1999 winter season? That's over 95 feet!!! That happens to be the worldwide seasonal snowfall record.
I think even people in Buffalo New York are impressed.
They're quite dismayed...feeling a little silly now after seeing "California" with this much snow. Sometimes people forget it's not all beach and sand here.
I promise to NEVER complain about 6-10 inches of snow again…EVER. Watching in horror from Door County, Wisconsin.
Michelle Garry, this ISN'T horror!!! This snowfall is like GOLD in ski resort towns. Not only here but other areas in Western United States and New England area as well. I never been to this area except of visiting this area by UA-cam videos. I did drove across Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and New Mexico all in winter weather months. You stated you're from Wisconsin. I was born in Detroit and grew up there and Livonia(west of Detroit).
@@exmichigansnowskier2150 I see your point, for sure. I guess I should have clarified that, to me, the “horror” is the hard work doing the continual clean up. I live in Wisconsin now, moved here last May from Florida just in time to miss hurricane Ian. Now THAT was true horror!
@@michellegarry1872, I have almost something in common. My first name is Gary. You look at the following UA-cam video short and YOU will say that's horror. This highway happens to be the most dangerous paved mountain pass highway in ALL of Canada and the United States combined. Hardly any GUARDRAILS in this 23 mile highway. As in video short shows. The highest avalanche paths per mile in these two countries. Rock slides and in summer months mud slides happen. Deer, mountain sheep and goats to avoid. What is a person going to do, hit one of these animals or go off the highway south of Ouray to hundreds FEET to your death? Yes no GUARDRAILS and this area is 800 feet down to the river gorge below. Some have said it's a 1,000 FEET down to the river gorge below. Yet Colorado Department of Transportation(snowplowing, avalanche debris removal, and road repair responsibility) keeps this highway open yearlong, except for avalanches. They also keep this open because of a major north/south highway in Southwestern Colorado. The local people say, "keep your eyes on the road and don't look towards the gorge because you find yourself in trouble".
With all that said, there's all kinds of vehicles traverse this highway especially in the summer months. Charter buses, RV'S as big as charter buses, semi-trucks, school buses, SUV'S and pickup trucks pulling fishing boats, etc and travel this highway. Here's the video.

@@michellegarry1872 I’m in the sierras and love it. Sure it is a hassle for travel and a little extra work. But the skiing is insane, and most people are well equipped to handle this. Fir perspective, our snow removal contractor won’t come out until 3 inches, which is the norm in our area. A two stage Honda blower, a few shovels, and you are golden.
Truckee, CA resident here. We've picked up 72 inches of snow within the last 7 days just here in Truckee, never mind what they're seeing and experiencing in the higher elevations. It looks you got even more snow but that's be to expected given that Mammoth Lakes lies at a greater altitude. Glad to see you're all ready to adjust and prepared for these kinds of winter storm systems. Stay safe out there!!!
Truckee has been insane.just got home from our place up there today after leaving at 5 am today. It’s the lightest snow I have ever witnessed in the Sierras and IMO better than Utah snow bc it is deeper.
In ‘83 I was 22 years old and there weren’t enough people to clear the roofs, so the condo associations were paying $15 an hour cash. This was a huge sum of money and I was young and strong, but there’s so much shoveling you can do. The work paid for my first harness and 5.10 climbing shoes that I bought from the mountain shop that was in the A frame that’s now a noodle place on Mountain Blvd close to the gas station.
I lived in the lower half of the house behind the shop and Rex’s old Matsu restaurant where I worked was right next door. It’s now a dentists office.
After 11 days of being cooped up from the storm we had some awesome blue bird days. I remember the cats had to dig a trench under the lift lines otherwise your skis would touch, and we walked _down_ the snowpack to enter the Mid Chalets second story.

I grew up in Nebraska, then moved to L.A. for 17 years. My wife and I spent a lot of time in Mammoth, one year they skied till August 17th. Think that my be broken this year. Moved back to NE 18 years ago, love seeing you guys work!
Wow, that's a rough transition...LA for 17 years and back to NE. Guess it helped that you were a native and knew what you were going back to, weather-wise.
@le th my wife was born and raised in L.A., and was in her 30s when we moved to Nebraska. She loves it, loves the thunderstorms, the wind, the spring, and summer. We make a trip back to Mammoth now and then, driving back through COLORADO! Life is strange sometimes.

I saw a post from a snow removal company similar to yours, posted March 4th from Lake Tahoe.
The video description indicated a 42 feet snowfall amount so far this year … that is insane !!!
I am assuming you have pretty much the same figure in Mammoth Lakes.

Thank you for another great video! So appreciate all your hard work and taking the time to document the experience. I learned to ski at Mammoth 40 years ago, and love the town and the mountain. I wish I could get up their again, but age and health prevent me from skiing these days. Hope to take the grandkids some day and watch from Canyon Lodge. 😊

Epic dude! When I was a kid my brother and I saw snow in the backyard in Bakersfield! A dusting and it was gone , I will never forget it. 1965 or so.

You guys are all doing such a great job managing this insane snowfall up there. Honestly, it's impressive how you've all held up under the unrelenting weather.
When this is said and done, and it's June, you need to print t-shirts: I survived (at the top) Mammoth (center) Winter 2023 (bottom).
When you see all this snow, you definitely understand how the earliest settlers starved to death during bad winters trying to cross Donner Pass. Can you imagine if you only had covered wagons, no commercial snow plows, and no electricity in this weather??? The earliest settlers were made of stronger stock than we are today, that's for sure.

Now your nonstop roof crew are heros and endless muscle.....Bravo to them and your ever present repair shots and lessons for us heavy equipment lay people....I so enjoy watching the dilemmas of heavy snow fall and hope more skiiers learn from you about weather and how to view it to stay safe and less frustrated...like stay home and look ahead....Carry on and thank you for great informative posts...also thank Mike for posting the Subaru on facebook

Thanks for staying on it! As a welder who grew up Mammoth, can you please move the cardboard box out of the vicinity when welding and grinding? I’ve seen many fires start from welding sparks landing in/on flammables, especially cardboard. rubbish cans with flammables in them also. Just instinctual to notice it… bad time for a garage fire… but sorry to be obnoxious I hate people telling me what to do …. Just would rather speak than regret not saying something re safety. Thanks for staying on it, funny you said “take off and go to Hawai’i” I live Hawaii now and we are getting plenny rain - we send the atmospheric river so I always know when Mammoth is about to get hammered. Been a wet and windy winter for us but today is cherrie! Going beach… I put my time in shoveling snow growing up and am grateful to enjoy the ocean today but also jonesing to carve some turns on our mountain!

I worked snow removal at kirkwood back in the early 2000's for 2 winter seasons before the kmpud started doing it. The 950F with a balderson blade was a good combination for ski resort level snow. There were aspects of that job i miss and some i dont miss at all.

It's a good thing you are roof clearing, there have been roof collapses in Anchorage Alaska due to snow loads on top. So keep up the good work and stay safe.

I managed to get out of mammoth today by 11AM. I heard the blizzard and visibility got worse by noon. Luckily people weren’t driving to close to each other while heading out

Back in the early 1980s I took a physical geography course at a local junior college. One of the topics of discussion was how weather patterns may change in a warming global environment. One of the things the teacher suggested was to not buy property in the California mountains unless the building was capable of shedding its own snow, like an A-frame, and had at least three stories so that you could get out the top one in an extreme snow event. Pretty sure this is what he was talking about and it might be a new normal.
This is not uncommon in the sierras. They had even more snow than this in the 50s. With our roof, the key is copper, as it sheds snow better than shingles. Additionally, we have had to dig around the perimeter of the roof to make room fir shedding snow. Absolutely insane. Btw, the lowest section of our roof is 20 ft off the ground

Back in the 1970s we had snow storms in Lake Tahoe where we had to go in and out of the second story window. So although this storm is significant it isn't something new.
@@billyrayvalentine7972 yea, we moved, and used to keep a stockpile of plywood at the old house for windows. Unfortunately, we did not keep that stash, and just spent a grand on plywood….
I've stayed at that Motel 6 which is often sold out when skiing is good. I'm sure the management and guests were really happy you were able to clear one of the two ways in - driveways on slopes can be so hairy when weather happens. Not sure where he's going to go w/ 395 in such bad shape (maybe closed?). He will be thanking Ullr when he gets back to LA.

Yeah, I seen a guy snowmobiling on a field south of Mammoth Lakes in late July, 2019. There was 15 FEET of snow on the ground then.
It's normative for Mammoth to be open through July 4 weekend. It's fun to go up on Memorial day weekend, too.

Dude that 5th floor snow removal looks so sketchy, man I would be freaked out even tied in.
I am surprised no one has thought of an automatic snow removal system for roofs. For roofs with a pitch some slick plastic to lay down for winter months. Or even a roof heating system to melt the snow off.

Is there no requirement for the roof pitches on all structures to be adequate to shed naturally?
There are recommendations not requirements. As long as structurally. It can hold the weight they can make a flat roof.
There are, that's why Bonshare model houses are no longer allowed to be built. The really wet, hard packed snow tends to stick to most roofing materials, even metal. Despite well angled roofs, no matter how much snow we get here (Ontario, Canada) we have to go up on the roof every year, about mid-winter in February, to remove it. Just part of life I guess:) The eavestroughs also prevent snow from sliding off naturally.
Many roofs use heating elements too.
Another good video, dogs just bring joy & are always happy . My 2 big dogs I check them at the door & they get there feet cleaned before coming.
