I hate how people resort to free speech to justify trolling or rudeness. Nobody has to actually have to read you or listen to you. Especially if you're going to try and be hurtful on purpose.

Internet trolls are really sensitive about what you say, they stalk you, the spam your Facebook and troll you because their mad at what you say. They are annoying.

LittleImpaler yelp, trolls are mentally deranged and get kicks out of bullying others. They seek to control others because they lack control in their own lives. It's about power and monopolizing others

Trolling to me is someone who will trample onto an individual with the intent of getting an emotional rise out of them. Just unwarranted, out of the blue with no clearcut goal of accomplishing anything constructive. They will take a tiny thing that they've picked up on about you and run like hell with it to take you down a path into emotional turmoil for their own satisfaction and enjoyment. They delight in "getting to you" so to speak. I think it makes them feel mentally superior. They truly get something positive from putting someone in a bad mental state.
For example, I was playing a game on my PlayStation one morning (Elder Scrolls Online to be exact), and my character that I have created has this really neat dark smokey shadow around his eyes. The character looks like me and essentially is my avatar, it's the game's extension of me. Well, it was probably 6:45 am or so when this other person in character comes up to me and initiates a public chat in the game done where everybody can see. He says "Why the f@$! are you wearing eye shadow? That's for women." I told him that I thought it looked neat. Here was my first mistake, cracking the door open by responding. Of course I was literally in the process of trying to wake up so most of my intelligent faculties had not yet turned on at this point. So this guy starts going even further with rediculous comments "LOL look at this guy! You look so stupid!" And he kept going on. I told him "Why are you harrassing people, it's not even 7 am yet." His response was "Not where I am! LOLOL" you get the idea. It wound up morphing into me allowing to climb into my mental health area and rain havok on me. I reported him to admin but as I sat there about to bawl my eyes out at 7 am before I had to go to work, I realized what I had done. I allowed myself to dance with the devil. I should've just ridden off to another zone but I stayed. I should never have allowed this troll to get the satisfaction of knowing that he got under my skin. Hell, I should never have given him the time of day and had I been more awake, I know I would've reacted differently.
There are some people who really prey upon others. We must remember what to do and know that we most likely never did anything to deserve it. Heck I didnt know this guy and I'll most likely never encounter him again. But let's maybe use the old fire safety saying of "Stop, drop, and roll." to get away and keep ourselves safe.
Pardon the long comment, I just wanted to help nail down these ideas surrounding the definition of what a troll does and who they are.

To me, a troll is a lot like a bully in middle school. Theure deliberately trying to make you upset and try to counter their statements, i.e. feeding the troll. They want to get a rise out of you and make you respond. Just like a lot of bullies get off on the fact that you are emotionally affected by their behavior. They get off on your response to them, they feed on your feedback. Which is why a lot of people say to just not respond and not let it affect you. But, just like with a bully, this doesn't always work with trolls. If you don't do something they'll persistently harass you. Good thing about the internet is that blocking and reporting exists.

Perhaps we can revisit this topic? My impression is that our current circumstances have led to an increase in online anger. We've become feral. As an example, a Reddit page for people trying to negotiate unemployment insurance has a regular parade of trolls telling people they are stupid, and so on. The swath of folks seeking help range from those with humble jobs, to professionals and academics. There are kids and elders. The abject meanness and lack of empathy is so disturbing. Block, block block is about the only remedy.

I’m really glad you made this podcast. There’s so many things I would like to do to promote myself in my business and one of them is doing a UA-cam channel. But I definitely don’t have a thick skin and I just don’t follow through with doing self promotion because I’m afraid of being criticized. It’s helpful to know that even someone like you is affected by Internet trolls, but have found a way to cope with them and keep putting yourself out there. Thank you for the inspiration I hope someday I can find the courage to put myself out there more.

I was surprised when I listened to Courtney love being interviewed back in 1993? by the really funny, animated, eccentric reporter from Vancouver b.c. with the long curly hair who always brings little odd sentimental gifts to the musicians... Anyways, "trolling" was specifically used by her to express how the general press' was trying to make her look like a monster because of the vanity Fair article becoming very popular. It seemed that that guy was the only guy who seemed to be really genuine about reporting but used a bizarre way to conduct the interviews back in the early 90's. She got along well with him as I recall.

I enjoy this podcast. I am not trolling you, Kirk, but just for listeners who don't feel like doing the research I just did, this is what happened with Lindy West. After a troll put up a fake tweet where he posed as her deceased father, Lindy wrote an article in a magazine about how much the troll had hurt her feelings and then the troll reached out to Lindy and apologized.

I enjoyed this video a lot. I am not being harassed by internet trolls but some internet friends of mine are. It's frustrating. I relate to the trolling of being amused. That's the extent I go to. I don't hide behind an alias or fake account. I don't hurt people. I just amuse myself and entertain myself. Similar to Ethan Klein of H3H3 productions channel. Or like the old school trolling on newbs you mentioned. Such as the infamous Ken M where he has his own subreddit on Reddit. Guys check out r/kenm on Reddit for a good laugh assuming you haven't read his troll account screen shots yet. Thanks for the awesome podcast! I'll be looking forward to watching more of your videos!

Humberto reminds me of a gamer I watch, called SwoleBenji. They both grew up poor and were somewhat raised by 4chan. Benji is a troll but he is also very open and sincere. He's hard to explain but he does say that he needs to troll to fulfill his slight sadism. I call it "slight" sadism because despite wanting to mentally screw with people for keks and lawlz, he has a high sense of morality that seems to be at least cognitively empathetic.

You guys are more intelligent than that, you repeat the word "Hostile" a lots and I appreciate the fact that one of you corrected the other If a person is genuinely reacting to what he or she may consider "Your bullshit" [keep in mind, your opinion is not a true gospel and you are acting like: How dare she, he disagree/gets pissed off?] then that's not a "troll". I think a "troll" is someone who never watches a video, has no reasons to comment but does it just for tha heck of it.

Trolling isn't being a violent asshole/bully online, it's pretending to be stupid about a certain subject to get someone to argue with a satirical strawman you've created, which frustrates the person arguing with you because they can't believe someone could be so monumentally stupid, meanwhile everyone else watching the conversation can see that you're trolling and it's totally going over the other person's head, which is humorous. It's not meant to be evil, just mildly frustrating

Thanks, this helped. I feel like an entire large you tube channel that I watch is being trolled. It's probably by 3 fifteen - year-olds with a few different accounts but it's causing a lot of problems. I think if the group knew how to respond it would be fine, but it hasn't been going well. Is there a term for when someone stirs up a controversy on purpose? Like "Saying that you don't think that Totem Pole would look good in your living room is so disrespectful to Native American peoples!" Then apparently non-trollers but easy offended people are like, "That's right, that was disrespectful!" And then chaos ensues.

Wow. That sounds rough. Yeah, I learned long ago that these internet trolls are not interested in constructive debate. They're only interested in insulting people and/or getting a reaction. I suppose if I had the internet when I was 10, I probably would have gone through a troll phase myself. I just ignore those comments. I can usually tell when they're trying to troll me.

    • @Nelle4ever
      @Nelle4ever 7 років тому +1

Thanks! I think that the channel itself is finally taking more aggressive action to delete comments and maybe block accounts. But I hate that they have to spend time doing that and dealing with that. As a watcher and comment-er our only weapons seem to be self control. I went to You Tube's Safety Page (that link comes up when a comment-er reports harassment and bullying) and I think it was more directed at teens, but it actually suggests to engage.

I was married to a therapist for 20 years and let me say that psychology is a never ending problamatic maze that doesn't normally lead to any lasting peace. Meditation on the other hand normally (among long time practitioners) leads to greater sense of humour a lighter self image a realization that you're not the noise in your head. These clean dry (be here now) kinds of insights are philosophical or (ontological to be precise) in nature. Just saying. Oh my trauma oh my story talk about narcissism. Ok some folks have big issues to resolve even Ekhart Tolle is via a different person dealing with psychology. But it's no end in it's self.
