  • These are the 6 things that impressed me on the new 2021 1290 Super Adventure linup. I had a chance to ride both the new R and the new S version recenlty. This year I switched to a 2020 1290 Super Adventure R after riding a 2018 S model for three years and almost 50.000 km so I am very familiar with the 1290 Super Adventure series from KTM. I also owned the BMW R 1200 GS for 2 years and have ridden the current 1250 GS on numerous occasions.

    Thank you so much for your videos! I watched quite a lot of them (especially the riding ones) and you convinced me going with KTM as my first "adventure" bike is the right choice. I've been riding a Harley Davidson Road King for the past 8 years, doing roughly 100,000 KMs around Europe but both my wife and I wanted to try something more versatile and potentially more comfortable. so I got the SAS 2021 just 3 weeks ago and it already has now 8000km on it after a 2 week road trip from Romania to Spain :)
    I really enjoyed the bike, definitely more fun than the BMW GS, engine wise, and similar ergonomics (suspension, riding modes, etc.) I also did use the adaptive cruise control quite a lot and I experienced the unexpected acceleration that you mentioned in your first clip about the new model. I eventually (think I) figured it out as being caused by turning on the left signal as if I wanted to overtake the car in front, at which time the bike would start to accelerate again at the set speed. I still didn't read the manual, which I should probably at this point :))
    One thing that's annoying is the lack of available extras (engine guard, tank bag, bigger screen, etc.), but that will hopefully be fixed soon. The engine guard is a must for me as I want to get it into offroad, and without that I'm not taking any chances
    Enjoy your rides and keep up the good work on your channel!

      I ride Harleys and am considering getting the 1290 SAS. Interested in the comparison of the Road King 2up at freeway speeds, 80mph/130kph, regarding stability, passing large trucks, windy conditions. Also, would you buy the 1290 SA again?

    I am still very happy with my 1st generation of SA 1290 (2016). Have it now for 2nd year and I can imagine I will have it for long time. In my opinion there is no reason to upgrade. And I did drive S and R 2020. Anyway very good review!

    Agree the handling is much improved. One issue for me was top heavy feeling of my 2018 model compared to 2021. Personally I'd still replace steering damper with higher quality after market adjustable one. For example the softest setting on after market damper is still 20% stiffer than stock WP damper. Im 1.9m tall and found wind protection much improved also. Will be more involved process to remap engine as there are now 3 O2 sensors and big convertor in exhaust. Really hate the small flimsy turn signal switch. Always enjoy your interesting and measured reviews! All the best.

      Thank you very much Martin. Good to know that wind protection for taller riders is improved too. Hard for me to judge at 1.80 m 😉 the small turn signal knob really bothered me too. I couldn't agree more. The initial feedback for me was that the previous model had more snap, however if you put the bike in Rallye mode with slip 5 is becoming a supermoto monster. Extremely playful. Lower slip mode for higher wheelies and higher slip for lower ones. Amazing control comes with this setting if you're looking at poping up some wheelies for a playful ride👍

    Excellent job, brother! Thank you for clearing up any doubt about the high speed stability issue on this new generation vs. prior iterations. That issue, along w the twitchy throttle, are my biggest gripes w my '17 1290SAS. I did the whole kit and caboodle with the Rottweiler parts, but that only partially helped w the fueling. I hope after doing more riding on the new SAS, you still feel that the fueling is not problematic on this new generation?

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much. I have to admit that fueling was not an issue for me - also I lack the experience with upgrades like the Rottweiler kit. Would love to try the Rottweiler kits on my bike but I would likely not pass emissions testing in Germany which mandatory every 2 years. With that said. The new SA has gotten smoother at lower RPMs which was noticeable during my off-road day with the R. Takes some getting used to as I also stalled the bike many times that day 😂

    Good video again. I've a 2020 S model. Thinking of upgrading but...
    A few things. ... Can you turn off wheelie control and keep traction control on.. or Do you need to buy Rally mode for that? And even then will it let you wheelie for a distance.
    Also.. I remember you saying before thst you liked the character of the old engine. I'd hate to buy a new one and it feel too refined and not as mental as 2020 version. I havent test rode yet.
    Lower height does appeal to me though.
    Cheers .

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much. You can turn off traction control completely if you want to wheelie - just like on the 2020 version. Rallye mode will incremental setting of the traction control- highest setting of 9 will engage traction control very early before the front wheel comes up. Dial it down to less than 4 and the wheel will start to lift and still cut the power of rear wheel keeps spinning to fast - all that can be changed while you ride with + and - buttons on the left. Also- Rallye Mode will remember the last setting even after the bike was turned off.
      Best thing is to take the new one for a ride to see if it’s worth it for you to upgrade.
      It’s not all sunshine in my opinion- there will be a second part to this video with 6 things I did not like 😉

    KTM should fix yesterday the issue with the seat. Is a crusial reason which I remain on that machine.

    I was drawn to SAS because of its engine and because of top heavy feeling and wobbling issues decided me to sell it. All my complaints with the previous model has been solved now in the current one but as you mentioned in your video that the engine in the 2021 model is now a bit muted compared to the model that it replaces. How significant the changes to the power? More power to you motoVibes!

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  3 роки тому +1

      Still the same power as the predecessor - just with a little less roar (vibration and sound) compared to mine (which also has the Akra exhaust my test bike did not) but you gain smoother response at low RPMs. Overall the new tuning can be considered an improvement - for many this may not even be an issue. Call it nostalgia but I liked the character of the predecessor better 😎

    Good info on the seat height. Can you comment on your previous 1290 S vs the 2021 S model. How much lower is the 2021 S compared to the 2020?

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  2 роки тому

      Hi Mark - I think on paper the difference is only 1 cm but it feels more like 2 maybe 3 cm to me because I can reach the ground better with my feet. Nominal seat height is not the only deciding factor on how well you can reach the ground - the shape of the seat also factors in - a narrower seat will give you more reach (think of light weight Enduro narrow) - a wider seat less reach.
      The 2-3 cm is in the normal setting - the "low" setting (standard on each bike) gives another 2 cm. I am 180 cm tall - the lowest setting is much too low for me on the 2021 S model. I hope this helps

    Great video. I’m upgrading from a BMW F900XR to a big size adv bike. I test rode the 2022 GSA, great bike, comfortable etc etc. It just doesn’t give you the kick. Have both SAS & SAR scheduled for test rides by the end of March since my dealer doesn’t do test rides during super low temps. My biggest question right now is, SAS or SAR? I do mostly long trips and really not an off-road guy, however the SAR looks far more aggressive and appealing to me. The 21” front tire and long travel are questionable for me when it comes to high speeds on highway but i just don’t want to make this kind of investment and be restricted to road only with the SAS. Not sure if SAR is the actual SAS with added capabilities or just a totally different bike that will excel off-road but will lack what the SAS has on pavement.

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  2 роки тому

      Thank you very much 😉 as for your bike choice - from what you are describing the SAS would be the better fit for the riding you do - the S and the R are very similar but their respective bias Onroad vs Off-road is very noticeable- I will have a video coming up soon to break down the exact details between the S and the R
      I do like the R design better too but changing the look of the bike is relatively easy. The smaller and lighter wheels as well as the semi active suspension of the S will be perfect for road riding 😉

    This is definitely on my “wish list” to upgrade from my 1200 GS. My biggest concerns would be poor warranty coverage and dealer support, as well as electronics that still appear to error regularly. Most of all though, we do a lot of two up touring and the GS excels at that. I’d be very curious to know how someone would rate this bike for two up touring compared to the GS?

    • @MotoVibes

The GS will always be a comfier bike but I have done close to 350,000mile son them and guess i was ready for a change.

      @@flapjackbeans Don't get me wrong - the KTM is probably more fun and engaging to ride - but its not as comfy. The plastics are no way as good as BMW's. They scratch up easily I found. Why KTM screwed up the seat manufacture I have no idea but it put me off - I ordered the Ergo seat but it never came and now is no longer even an option on KTM's website. The new Ergo heated seat from BMW I am finding is good for 200+mile days and the seat to peg ratio is more comfy for me (injured arthritic hip). I have had 6 GS's over the years and both the old 1290 SAS and the new one. The new SAS is a great bike - prob the best KTM have ever made. If I had the money I would have both - the KTM for fun trips and the GS for day after day touring comfort - :-) Oh and the KTM quickshifter and gearbox overall is way nicer (and sportier) :-)

    I dont think it's the "only option you got"..Harley Pan America is a equal to this bike or so the saying goes...Im waiting for the Super Duke GT to come out before I get to excited over this bike, it looks like it's a winner!

      yeah - I did not consider the new kid on the block when I said that. I have no experience with the new Harley - as a former Harley owner I am very curious to take the Pan America for a ride some day.

      @@MotoVibes Im not a Harley fan but I think they did a fantastic job for a first attempt, I went to the KTM dealer yesterday, it might be difficult to buy a Super Duke GT or this Adventure model the dealers are short on supply..
