Want more power/volume? Move the beater back.. you’ve got the pedal sideways at 9:00 and the beater is like 3 inches from where the bassdrum head would be. I have owned Iron cobra, Eliminator, Demon Drive, Axis A (shown in this vid), and Axis Lazer. To be fair, I have never had issues with any of those pedals, besides a broken U joint on the Iron Cobra driveshaft. Axis pedals can give you whatever feel you want, its just a matter of manipulating the settings.

My son spent a lot of money on two Axis As with the MicroTorque system. It took almost two months to get them and when they arrived, one of the nuts for the bass drum hoop clamp was already cross-threaded. Off to the hardware store to find a similar machine screw and wing nut. Then, two weeks in, one of the springs broke. This time, we called Axis about 10 times to explain the problem and get some replacements to both fix the pedal and keep some spares. They’re very fast, but everything you said was right about quality control and customer service.

I have axis a21 sabre Derek Roddy since years and none of the above problems occurred for me except low quality springs i have to change them often.but that's normaI I think cause my settings are super hard.I gig ,I play death metal and what i see in this video most of issues here are coming from simple neglect and poor maintenance.yes these pedals need once a time inspection and maintenance -checking all nuts bolts screws etc they like to losen up sometimes .This stuff working hard in extreme music !it never happen to me to beaters problems with shaving rods -puzzles me what you been doing to them they shave like that seriously.Second thought a bit controversial would be that many people blame pedals -they cant set them up etc and never look at their bad technique that can manifest very quickly and make you struggle with super precise pedals like axis .There's plethora of axis using extreme musicians and while they get nothing for being in their roster or some not even on it they still use axis and not complaint it at all...

Man. Their quality control must have gone downhill over the years. I have a double setup that I’ve had since the 90’s. I don’t remember what year they are, but the driveshaft is a larger diameter than the newer ones, and it’s all silver.
    They have been absolute tanks.
I am a hard player. I mean....at times I’ve felt like I was on a mission to turn my kit into a pile of kindling. Mine hit hard, and have never broken.
Now I will say that the clamp nut and stud have gotten beat up like you said, which should never happen, and some other spots where they have, “eaten themselves”. But other than that, mine are solid.
I also replaced those dumb beaters immediately. I took a steel rod, threaded the end and fabricated it to accept skateboard wheels for my beaters.
Oh and while we are on the subject. After I fell in love with the pedal, I outfitted my whole kit with their stands.
    On the record....
    Axis....your stands SUCK.

there are so many modern pedals out there, that could have been produced by rocket companies (Trick, Altone, ACD, Czarcie Kopyto). Just Take a look at the Altone Pedals - incredible! just wow! Just watch how the beater is swinging - it´s stunning!!!
Everytime I see such pedals of course I´m jealous and want one too.
But i´m still playing my Gibraltar Intruder and my Tama Camco Pedal from the mid/end 80´s.
Simple, reliable, light and fast , easy to repair/restore and maintain - these will outlive me easily.
It all depends on your technique and playing ability.
As long as you are a "casual" player who does not steadily kick beyond 200 bpm, every decent "normal" pedal that works properly will do the job. If it´s not in your feet, you won´t get it out of the machine.

So, they hit so hard they broke titanium rods, but they don't hit hard... you broke parts on your second tour... so they must be crap... and, they sell rebuild kits that include the rubber bumpers for the hoop clamp. I've had great service from Axis. Any time your tour equipment it's going to need regular service. I do agree the sonic hamers are not a great design... the 21A Laser solved that problem. Go with some type of ball beater. Axis recommends the more solid X pedal for tour duty. 6 years of many gigs and tours... yeah...

Man, you're absolute right. Axis should fire their engineers. The slave beater position is a total joke. The hoop clamp is not even designed. Its children Meccano at its best. Rebounds, due to the slave beater position, sound weak. Bearings, screws, joints break easily. Tension springs are hard to adjust and even more unworkable. Board height, you need to buy extra pieces of metal to adjust it. They mix plastic with cheap aluminium. And most stupid of all is the fact the footboards are designed for people with two left feet.

I've owned a set of Axis AL-2s for about 7 years now. I live in the UK and picked a pair up from Musicians Friend and had them shipped here. Paid like £450!!!! Bargain at the time.
I threw those trash beaters in the bin within the first month of having them. I use a set of iron cobra ones with a few hefty weights on them to add some velocity to the swings. Works really really well! Highly recommended doing that. As you said in the video, crazy smooth swing mechanism on these. Great for triggering, but with these heavy beaters I have, I've managed to get a crazy strong punch out of 'em from a very minimal effort👌
Aside from the beaters, the only thing that bothers me is the wing-nut spring tension system. Really f***ing tricky to tighten them. But once they're adjusted your good to go. I've actually swapped those for some circular plastic things. Works miles better...
I noticed my boards at the heel side have started to rattle a bit and I do need to sort that as I record a lot of stuff. That is becoming increasingly annoying and now I've heard you say it, I need to fix it hahaha
Hopefully Axis can sort you out man, sucks that so many things have gone wrong with your pedals :/ also I wish I could have picked up the black ones! Mine are boring silvery colour 😂 haha

I was so glad you (the poster of this video) spoke about the lack of power with these pedals. I have tried Axis twice before, and although they are definitely light and smooth, as one poster on Drummerworld put it "they rendered my bass drum impotent". I agree with your assessment 100%. These pedals are really designed for use with triggers, and while triggers don't help you play faster, they absolutely do make you sound more powerful (and yes I'm aware of triggers on the market that are touch sensitive, but that's not what most guys are using triggers on their kick drums for and we all know it). I've never understood why so many guys just don't admit the truth about these pedals. They serve a certain purpose and part of the marketplace (predominantly hardcore/speed metal), but without triggers I can't even fathom attempting to play "Kashmir" with these things and be heard, even if mic'd up. I saw Richard Christy play once live with an Axis double pedal. He wasn't triggering according to what I read online, and although he was very fast, you couldn't really hear his double bass patterns very well despite playing on a fully mic'd kit. To me it's like sticks. A pair of 5A maple drumsticks is going to be much lighter and easier to maneuver on a kit than a pair of 2S PRO MARK OAKS. The difference in lightness/feel will be enormous, but good luck producing the needed power with the 5A maple's if you're playing loud rock (again unless you're triggering the snare and toms etc). I'm not slagging Axis. I think they make a really nice pedal overall, it's just designed for a very specific purpose. Now will come the obligatory attacks I suppose, but I think the info about the power aspect of these pedals mentioned in the video is SPOT ON. I too would also recommend something like a DW 9000 double, or Tama Iron Cobra Double etc if you want significant power from your pedal.

  • @contrebombarde6950

That's almost opposite of my experience overall, though there's a few similarities. I've had both a double shortboard since ~94 (well, there were no longboards then...) and a single longboard.
Service: I've only had to send in one for service once (shortly after I got it), and I got back the pedals not only fixed but with spare parts and a hand-written letter explaining the issue and how it was resolved (early days!).
Speed and feel: totally agree. Some love chain drive, but for me, it's like going back in time when I have to play chain drive (DW, Tama, whatever) again. They're fine pedals, but not the same. One might argue that you have more control with something not as "fast," but I don't know. JR Robinson plays Axis, so it's obviously not only about speed.
Power: I hear many say this, but I disagree. The speed folks may not configure their Axis pedals this way, but you can hit the kick as loud as you need to with the appropriate beaters and settings. I think there are two things to consider: 1) the same weight beater feels much lighter on Axis--try a heavier beater, and you will get as much power as you want (note how DW has the removable weights with their beaters for their direct-drive pedals); and 2) at some point it really doesn't matter--to double the volume, you need 10x the power, which just isn't going to happen. Yes, the feel is different with chain drive, and that heavier action may "feel" more powerful. That doesn't necessarily mean it's functionally louder.
Rod slipping: that hasn't been my experience, but I think it must be a common enough issue that they've apparently redesigned it to be a square design.
VDL screw breaking: I've had that happen, but replaced it with a traditional drum key-style metal set screw. I think only the older models had the plastic (resin?) screw?
Beaters: yeah, I swapped those out pretty quickly. The "wrecking ball" beater is aptly-named: it chews through drumheads, but pairs well with a Gibraltar Click Pad (if you want that sound). I haven't tried any of the others, though the Kollias beater looks worth a shot. I've had awful luck with beaters, though. I forget which model I used where the head could be rotated up/down to align with the head and then set with a set screw. It invariably would keep rotating while playing until it had rotated up 90 degrees, with the edge of the beater head digging into the batter pad. The one I have now rotates right/left, but for whatever reason, that continually rotates off-center also. One would think it would twist to align itself flat rather than rotating from aligned to off-angle. No problems with an old-school felt Danmar beater, though.
I agree 100% on the hoop clamp screw--those get eaten up. The problem is that it's aluminum, which is a soft metal (you can cut it using saw blades made for wood). The mechanism in general is a pain, and my biggest complaint about these pedals. I wish they used something more like DW and others where the screw isn't beneath the footboard--it's difficult to get your fingers in there and tighten it hard enough to the clamp. Thankfully, their velcro is so strong that the pedal is going nowhere (on carpet)... but the clamp mechanism unfortunately won't clamp hard enough to keep the drum in place.

    • @x8jason8x
      @x8jason8x Рік тому

I've had experience with enough of the Axis line to know that they simply don't deliver the power I want, in any configuration, where others do. Whether every pedal Axis made has the same issue or not, I couldn't say of course... but I've played every type of pedal for sure. Direct drives are unforgiving of mistakes, in build or play. Axis pedals make plenty of them.
I will not be buying any Axis pedals that currently exist, and my reason is that while it may be possible to get a good power setup with them, I never managed to find one, even with hours of tuning them. I didn't have to do any setup on my Tricks at all, and they played like sledgehammers out of the box. I can crank the spring all the way up or down, and it doesn't take the finesse out of the footboard, something Axis has never been able to accomplish, in my experience. I've not had the pleasure of being able to really mess with Czarcie Kopyto or ACD pedals, but I've got to play a set of both, and the experience was similar to my Trick Bigfoots, they just play themselves honestly. Ntm that having now played a set for two years, I don't think Axis is capable of making a pedal as good as these.

This is really weird because I bought my longboards like 10 years ago, at the time they were the ONLY direct drive pedals on the market (this was before Pearls Demon Drives and everything else), and there are zero plastic parts in them anywhere. I've toured all over the world with them, taking them apart, putting them back together, switching from 2 singles to a double pedal, and the only issue I ever had was sometimes the rod to the slave pedal would slip off like you said. All the adjustment screws on mine are like regular drum lugs. I did immediately switch to Iron Cobra beaters because I didn't like how the Sonic Hammers felt. I wonder if they switched to cheaper materials at some point or if yours are different because they're the black ones? I never had any issue with a lack of power either

I put the pedals on my 2 Tama 24" kicks'. Adjusted everything accordingly, but I wanted to use my Danmar Redhead long throw beaters instead of the hot mess speed hammer beaters, or whatever they called them back then. so i get the regular wood beaters on and Wow! I was flipping!! I couldn't get the beater to contact the head! It literally Deadheaded at the 12:00 position. So, I went back, readjusted Everything again. NO GO!!!, No matter what I tried I couldn't get a regular beater of any type to impact the head without laying all my weight into it. I looked closer into the issue and found they were using springs which were about 1/3rd too short. replaced the springs with the same gauge coil wire, but longer, the springs needed more coils on them to allow for the full rotation...replaced the springs and now I'm flying....Thanks Axis!

I bought my AL2’s back in 2004, I just sent them in for a refresh to the factory after 16 years of abuse. My refresh process was easy, they had them done in a day, even with all the Covid backlog they have.
Your heel hinge issue can be fixed by getting the updated heel bearings. To help with the power, get the A21 #1 piece. The sonic hammers are made out of carbon steel, not titanium. They have a new ds3 rod that finally doesn’t slip however, AND THIS IS BS, you need to change all of the drive shaft rods for it to align properly. Never recommending these to anyone! Gotta be honest. The things you are complaining about varied and can be fixed. If you don't like the beaters, just replace them. Most standard beaters are not everyone's cup of tea anyway and you can simply replace them (Which you did) by making your own modified Tama iron cobra beaters. For the long term damage and unreliability of the drive shaft, I get that, however, you could also have gotten an ACD drive shaft which has been known for the last 3-4 years. All in all, if you put up with these pedals for 6 years and had such a myriad of issues, you could have looked into something else. If I had issues I wouldn't have put up with pedals for 6 months non the less 6 years. I respect your dedication to them, but perhaps examining other possibilities could have prevented such grief?

I came from the side of pedals that come at a fraction of the cost and come by as tougher and more reliable. I do understand that there are replacements out there, but I don't see why someone would have to down the line buy new parts especially when the pedals come at such a premium price, if it was cheaper I'd understand that it would need upgrades sooner rather than later. Fortunately these came from a trade with my old Iron Cobras (longboards were mint) so I didn't have to pay the thousand-some odd dollars for these, if it was any other circumstance I would have bought something else.
