  • What if nonfat foods are actually making us less likely to lose weight? Neuroscientist Krzysztof Czaja's research focuses on obesity and finding no-surgical ways to overcome it. What his research has uncovered so far will surprise you. Krzysztof Czaja’s obesity research focuses on changes in the human brain following a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. His lab at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia is investigating the role of neural gut-brain communication in the development of obesity with the goal of finding non-surgical ways to overcome it. His work has been featured in Science 2.0, ScienceDaily, and Quartz. Krzysztof, an associate professor at UGA’s Department of Veterinary Biosciences & Diagnostic Imaging, has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed research papers and several book chapters. He holds a D.V.M. from the Veterinary Medicine College at the Academy of Agriculture and Technology in Olsztyn, Poland and a doctorate in neuroanatomy from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you for this research. It makes a LOT of sense. I think that since English is his second language I caught more information in the way he said it. Thank you so much!

It's not about what you eat, it's about the how, when and the why. Listen to your gut and to your hunger, and to your gut and hunger only. Make concious decisions: "What do i want to eat? What do i crave?". Learn to listen to your hunger and stop if you are not hungry anymore. Don't eat if you are not hungry.

Very interesting! Many people say to "limit sugar", but can't give us the peek inside the body that he does. It's very motivating to see (among other things) the scientifically demonstrated cycle of sugar intake--> toxic gut bacteria--> gut inflammation--> leaky gut--> fatty liver--> more obesity. His voice is almost hypnotically calming but it's well worth making the effort to really pay attention. Thank you for this video!

I can confirm that fructose including fruit makes me eat more. Unfortunately avoid it 100% is not enough to make me lose weight.

"While sugar is necessary for a healthy life and the consumption trend is going in the right direction, we still consume more than the recommended amount of added sugar (6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men while average americans consume 23 teaspoons per day) instead of counting every calorie you eat count every gram of added sugar".

Note to self: "Instead of counting every calorie you eat, count every gram of added sugar."

maybe the sugar consumption is declining in the pure form, but it's in everything else, so those numbers are not correct

Would love to read more on this. So, if we begin counting grams of sugar vs. calories, will our neuro-gut connection heal? Or has the damage already been done?
