I've discovered ShadowDark out of a long time away from 5e, it's the only edition of the game I've played, and after playing other rpgs; I found going back to 5e very distasteful. This game and possibly the OSR in general has reinvigorated my interest in this genre of tabletop. Thank you for all the coverage and commentary! I look forward to seeing more

We are definitely buying Life-Paths. We liked how in Deathbringer each class had its own background lists.
I haven't tried Deathbringer yet. It's on my list for sure!
Hey, the writer of smoke and steel here. Thanks for the review! The machine gun is quite powerful but I wanted to include it for folks that want to run games set during WWI. For games set earlier I'd recommend excluding it or making it rare. Also I like your suggestion for Battlefield Insight.
Absolutely! It's a great document. That makes a lot of sense, about the machine gun! I think it definitely works with a WWI vibe!
I have bought and helped to kickstart quite a bit of shadowdark content (including life-paths). I really enjoy this game, and so do the students I run the game for.

This is of course just from my experience so it's not 100% accurate, but when I hear people talk about taking, say a longbow over a crossbow, they are thinking of combat as sport which is opposite of what Shadowdark is implying which is combat as war. I'm 5e you are thinking about the multi hour long combat. In Shadowdark you are thinking about how can we have this combat end in a few turns max. That's just my opinion though.

Life Paths looks awesome, a must buy.
Maybe I will include it in the Shadowdark CoS Campaign the party is traveling to the vistani camp. So its quite early in the game.
It would make a perfect version of Madam Eva's readings!
