Benjamin have you heard about avoidants...they can hurt you and then avoid talking even when you repeatedly and respectfully grant them space but make it known we would like to resolve. And any attempt to talk turns sour deflected and the elephant remains. Its like your keeping of communication lines open is their very ticket to ignore the elephant while talking about other things. For me i see this as disrespect and blocking kinda ends the madness. So that they now garner their own focus to talk about what uve been wanting to talk to them about.

There’s a difference between the silent treatment + taking space. When a person takes space it’s communicated: “hey I’m feeling super overwhelmed right now + may say something I don’t even mean. I’m going to need to take a break + return to this conversation (tonight, tomorrow, in an hour etc.)” Silent treatment has a withdraw of love aspect to to it. It feels punishing. It feels scary. And, ultimately it brings up lots of intense emotions around abandonment.
