  • What does your teen think about gender?
For the last five years, SHE Media has been filming with a focus group of about 25 kids, to cover an array of topics. When we first met Bailey, Evan, Gabrielle, Julia, Juno, Jojo, Reed, Sabine, Sadie, Skye, Zaki, and the 14 other kids we interviewed, they were 9 years old. We've followed them for the past five years, and today, they’ve grown into young adults, navigating the weird, wild, and wonderful world of teen culture.

It's Official: Gen Z is Rejecting the Gender Binary
Today’s teens are more gender-nonconforming and gender-fluid than any previous generation, and it’s serving them well.
A 2018 study from the journal Pediatrics, for example, noted that nearly 3% of kids they studied identified as transgender, gender-nonconforming, or non-binary; compare that with an earlier UCLA study (from 2017, so not that much earlier) that found only .7% of teens identifying as transgender, and it’s hard to deny the expansion of gender identity, gender terminology, or both. As for our five-year focus group of 25 kids, our recent follow-up interviews with them support just that trend, with an increase of 10% or more in un-articulated or non-binary gender identities among the 25 kids.
“Gender identity is not what you’re born with; it’s who you are,” one of the Hatch kids, Reed, tells SheKnows, reiterating what science has long known about gender (that it’s a social construct) - but a fact that this country seems oh-so-draggingly delayed in embracing. (Case in point: Why is it so damn hard to let trans kids use the bathroom they’re comfortable with??) “It doesn’t matter what they think,” Reed adds. “It just matters what I think, and how I imagine myself.”
Skye, for one, has reimagined the gender - and the pronouns - they were assigned at birth.
“I’m gender-neutral and I use they/them pronouns,” says Skye. When asked which bathroom they would use, Skye replies, “Whichever one has a shorter line.” Um, you can hang with us anytime for that response, Skye.
Skye goes on to explain that they’ve spent these past five years we’ve been following their story truly struggling with their gender before coming out as non-binary. “As of this summer I feel a lot more confident. I just felt really weird about myself [before]…I have some pretty specific memories of questioning my gender when I was younger… I’d suppress that.”
“I’m not a boy. I’m also not a girl,” Skye continues. And realizing and acknowledging this? “That was a really important step for me to take,” they add.
“Right now, I think I identify as male? I’m still kind of figuring it out,” another teen, Zaki, tells SheKnows.
But what’s the biggest struggle for kids coming into their own and identifying as gender-nonconforming? Aside from, you know, U.S. politics (see: aforementioned bathroom awfuless), a huge obstacle can, sadly, be the parents.
“My friends especially immediately started using the right pronouns and correcting themselves when they used the wrong ones,” Skye explains, “as well as using my [new] name as soon as I told them that’s the name I was comfortable with.” But the adults in their life? Not as accommodating.
“I think it’s more nerve-wracking to come out to your parents,” 19-year-old Sadie, explaining that we expect folks of our own generation to be understanding - older generations, not so much.
So what can we, the parents - whether we’re elder millennials or elder generations - do? Listen to and validate your child and their gender identity. Don’t question, don’t gloss over it, and above all don’t refer to it as a “phase.” Accepting them for who they are is by far the most important thing you can do to be a good parent to your LGBTQ child - or any child, for that matter.
After all, as Zaki says, “It’s important to be yourself. Because if you’re not yourself, who are you?”

“Rip human race”…this comment section is dramatic. These teens are first of all respectful. Like all teenagers, including my self, they’re easily impressionable. They’re a product of their environment. This whole gender neutral fiasco makes no sense to me..doesn’t mean we shouldn’t listen to others opinion and be dramatic. That’s my 5 cents of thought

We absolutely shouldn't accept opinions on something that is factual. Your opinions on abortion rights, sure. Do you believe in aliens, okay. You think their is an infinite number of genders... absolutely not. listening is one thing, but this nonsense is being encouraged. You should listen enough so you can guide them to how silly stupid it is, but that's about it.

When I was about 4 years old I got into my mother's closet and decided to play dress up. I got on a pair of high heals, a dress, some clip on earrings and I was attempting to put lipstick on my mouth. My Mom caught me. She flew into a rage, ripped the items off me. I thought she had ripped my ears off she pulled the earrings off with such violence. Shen she picked me up by an ankle and dragged me into my room. My head bumped on the threshold as she did. I was dizzy and had a headache after that.
She locked me in the room and told me of my impending doom. My Dad would be home from work soon and I was condemned to punishment.
I could tell when my Dad got home because of the yelling going back and forth. Then I heard loud stomping up the stairs I was was in tears before he entered the room. He grabbed me by the wrist and dragged me down two flights of stairs into the dark forbidden basement and into a corner of the basement I had previously been told was off limits or I would be whipped. I had been whipped on many occasions and deliberately avoided that part of the basement primarily to avoid getting whipped. He got out some clothesline and tied my wrists together and hoisted me up by my wrists and hung me from a hook in an overhead beam. Then he pulled off my underwear and got out a knife and cut off my t-shirt. Then I heard the terrifyingly familiar sound of his belt being pulled out of it's loops followed by the even more frightening sound of that belt being rolled up with the buckle jingling. That meant I was getting the buckle end. I had never gotten more than five with the buckle end before. He then said the most frightening word in the English language: "COUNT!" That evening I learned to count to 100. He did not want to limit himself to just my rear end. He struck me everywhere including across the face. I have half a dozen permanent scars from just that one incident including one that disqualifies me from ever having a pretty face. Mercifully I passed out just as he was unhooking me.
I woke up as he was dragging me back up the second flight of stairs to my bedroom. He kicked open the bedroom door and flung me across the room. I hit the wall and fell onto my bed and passed out again.
I woke up the next day in the afternoon not having eaten anything in over 24 hours but I was too dizzy and my headache was too much for me to even notice the grumbling in my stomach. I also felt very weak and had a hard time standing up. I was dragged back downstairs into the basement where I was tied to a stool because I kept falling over from the dizziness. Dad got out the clippers and gave me what was then known as a whiffle cut. Basically it was what some people would call a military style haircut. Prior to that my hair was roughly an inch or so long. It was maybe an eighth of an inch long, anything shorter would have required a razer.
I was taken back up stairs into the dining room and sat on a chair and Mom and Dad opened up a can of string beans, (which I detested) a can of beats, (the one vegetable that always made me puke at the taste), and some liver. At least they cooked the liver. They chopped it all up and put it in a bowl. They gave me warm water to drink. On the third bite I had to run to the bathroom to puke. I missed the toilet and got it on the floor. dad scooped it up and put the vomit back into the bowl and mixed it with my meal. I was told I would not get another meal tomorrow unless I ate and kept down everything in that bowl. I did not eat the next day. On Day two Dad asked me if I was queer. I had never heard the word and had no idea what it meant. I shrugged my shoulders.
I was dragged back into the basement and hung back up naked again. the first stroke hit me in the face. I counted to 150 that time. Then I was asked "Now are you queer?" I still had no idea what he was asking me. On the third day I ate nothing and got 200 strokes of the buckle and asked again "Are you still queer?" I got it then. "No Dad" I said trembling barely able to get the words out weak from hunger and the third beating, "I'm not queer." Just to make sure I stayed not queer, he beat me ten more strokes every day for weeks. I learned to eat canned beats, string beans and liver. It was all I was permitted to eat for months.
I will say that I remained not queer for many years.
Dad died when I was 16. The guilt I felt for not feeling an appropriate amount of grief drove me near to suicide. I believed Mom when she told me I had murdered my Dad by being a bad person. Dad died of a heart attack. It seems I caused it by existing.
I graduated from high school and moved 1500 miles away from "home."
To all those of you who have supportive parents. Give them a hug for me.

I am so sorry that you were treated in such a way, no child ever should ever have to go through what you have suffered.
Parents are supposed to love and protect you, guide you and hear what you say and try to help you find your way through.
When my son was little he had long hair down to his bum, he liked playing with doll and had a toy stroller for his teddies. He love flowers and fairies, he like to play with girls and boys.
He grew and had his long hair cut off (I still have his plait), he started playing rugby the reason for his hair cut.
Then he grew his hair down to his bum again and started wearing odd socks and braclets and necklaces and got his ears peirce, then came the stretchers.
Then he had his hair cut so he had a long sweeping fringe, he dyed the main part black with the fringe being purple, next he dyed the whole lot black and started wearing black eyeliner and lipstick and I would paint his nails black he went to his prom in a ruffled white shirt with a black long pirate style jacket, while all the other males had tuxedos.
He went through a few more changes and now at 27 he has his hair I a sort of viking style and has a beard.
Children go through many changes it's part of growing up and it's a parents job to allow the freedom to investigate and to guide and advice them and do them no harm and that means deciding somethings for them until they are old enough to understand the consequences of their decision because children can not always comprehend to full and lasting consequences they may have to face because of one rushed and hurried decision.
I send you much love and hope that you have found peace and happiness ❤🤗😘

I'm so sorry for what happened to you. I guess you know now, but I want to remind you that you did nothing wrong, you were just a toddler having fun, and even if you had done anything wrong you would not deserve by any means to be treated that way by anyone, much less from your parents who are supposed to protect you from any harm, even being myself victim of a violent mother I can't imagine the pain and terror you had to endure. What your father did to was beyond evil, and the fact that you mentioned that you had been beaten before by him being such a little kid makes the whole picture even more terrifying. I'm glad that he stopped being able to beat you since you were 16, I hope that you have got over the guilt you never deserved to feel, and I wish your mother is ashamed of herself for enabling your torture and guilt shaming you.
Much love and care for you 😘

How about stop defining our selves by society's expectations? Why can't boys wear dresses, play with dolls, wear makeup, be emotional and identify as boys? Why can't girls have short hair, hate pink and dolls and have stereotypically masculine activities and still identify as girls? Maybe it's time to stop giving importance to gender as a personality trait and stop trying to fit in a box. Let's start teaching kids what they are and what female, male and intersex bodies are, and tell them they don't have to conform to gender roles. This is going to save many kids from the unnecessary confusion.

We have to look at this issue objectively, critically and philosophically. There was a time when no one regarded sex and gender as two different things. Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary of the English language of 1952 defines gender as "to beget," "to copulate" and "to engender." It defines engender "to bring into existence." Sex and gender were regarded as the same. Why, then, did some people begin to think that they are different, that gender is a role or identity? Because of politics. Gender belongs to bodies, not identities.

People never seem to say this, but it's so key to nonbinary identity. Biological sex has been tested and found to be a spectrum in the shape of two hills with a valley in the middle. My point is that intersex people exist and are as common as redheads. Intersex means you have Male, female, and in between biological characteristics. So why can't you want that for your body? Why can't you want to fall in between if that's what makes you feel comfortable. I don't want people to be attracted to me as a woman or a man, I want them to see someone who is androgynous. That's how I'm most comfy in life and there's a good chance a brain scan would prove that I have a trans brain and that my feelings are there for a reason. People with transgender brains have a brain closer to that of their desired sex than that of their birth sex. There is also a part in all brains that accounts for sense of self, and a trans person's has something wrong with it. It's just like being born with any other condition. And according to brain scans, the best way to fix this part of the brain is hormone therapy and otherwise transitioning. You can be born biologically female and desire to be more biologically androgynous. There is literally not a single thing wrong with that.
If you do proper research into this and still are against it, you just enjoy being a bigot and thinking your better than other people for no reason.

This is so awful what they are teaching children. If gender can mean anything to anyone, then it has no meaning and biological sex becomes all that matters. Society can't run on self-perception. And yes you can be gay, lesbian or bisexual--- only 2 sexes so their can't be more sexualities than this. If I see a person I think is a attractive and I am attracted to men, I won't know he thinks of himself as non-binary. Personal feelings are just that, personal. How you think of yourself is not the burden for everyone you encounter to carry. God, I hate this world.

It's not that parents don't understand, it's that parents do understand a lot more than children do because they all went through exactly the same things only it was much harder for them to come out as the world was less tolerant then,
As far as trans gender goes parents certainly understand a lot more, they understand what you will be giving up if you decided to go down the root of transitioning taking hormones and having cosmetic surgery that changes your life forever and there is no going back. With all the other genders you can chance your mind as there is no surgery involved unless the children are pushed by those with an agenda to believe they are not one of those genders but are in fact trans. A large number of children who decide they must be trans have mental health issues, some are autistic, some are confused. They need to spend time having counselling to investigate all their issues before setting of down the road of transitioning which is a one way street, if there is medical intervention.
Let them dress however play with whatever, wear makeup if they want, these things are reversible.
Let them be children why do they have to have a sexual preference before they understand what sex is.
Some children do feel uncomfortable in their body at some point while they are growing up, some girls get boobs early and it's embarrassing or there are those who have none, some boys are smaller than girls and some girls are taller than boys, she children are overweight, some very underweight all kids go through these things and the majority sort it out on their own in their own good time without the need for them to be told the must be the wrong sex/gender

I'm happy that I came out after 18 so I can say to everyone that it was never a phase
I'm happy that non binary people got to be recognize
    Pronouns are important
People were killed for being who they were
Disrespecting their identity is reminding us from a time 200 years ago where black people were enslaved, but a black person wearing a dress would be instantly killed
In Brazil transphobia is a crime for one reason
If it's not a crime people will keep reproducing the hate
    It's a crime for a good reason
It starts with someone joking about a clothe
    Then hurting that person
    Then hunting
And then the person's who fit kill the person's who doesn't fit
    If you fit
    Great
    Good for you
You don't need to come here to say what is right and wrong
Cause you only lived your life
    It's the life you have
And the other person's are not your slaves and should not follow what you think is the right thing
We really need non binary people
Cause without then, we would have never thought of how silly is to judge a person for their body or how they identify themselves
If the person is happy with neutral, what is wrong to use neutral?
If you want people to be sad
    The wrong one is you
    Maybe this are just words
    But words can hurt
    Words can kill
Words can genocide an entire population for century's
    And more then one
So stop trying to be God or the word of god on earth
Cause a real God wouldn't want people to be other thing that's not the creation
And for me humanity is the best creation that could ever exist
Love you for who you are, love the person's for who they are, respect yourself, respect the others, no one can say what is right or wrong
One page of the bible isn't worth a life

It's like we'd discover now that only children up to 5 years old have a certain thing, than lose it as they grow up, and we'd say we shouldn't attribute that to the kids, because the label doesn't necessarily mean that the kids have it. Of course this would make no sense. It's the same with the male and female genitalia. Eyy, let the guys breath. Let them express themselves, some day they'll find the truth, but in order to understand that, they need to stop being bombarded by stupid ideas, they need love and they must be taught about the reality we live, they dont need to be judged but understood and listened, and driven without judgement. They need to be capable of communicating things because they think so, not because others taught them how to think. They need help, they don't hate being ignored, they just hate that their voice has been shut up, because the noice of us, of the adults, is so louder that the youth does not know how to speak by themselves. One of the answers at the start made it very clear many of these young kids are unable to differentiate internal identity from external norms. It must be very confusing to be a kid right now. Even science says most kids that “come out” as trans have at least one friend who identifies as trans. It’s like the cool thing to do now, spend all day questioning where you are on a made up spectrum instead of focusing on the billions of other things you could focus on. Self-reflection is useful. People never seem to say this, but it's so key to nonbinary identity. Nonbinary isn't just gender expression, that's an outdated idea of gender, or should be. Nonbinary identity is biological too the expression just may or may not follow the biology of nb people and is a different matter entirely.
Biological sex has been tested and found to be a spectrum in the shape of two hills with a valley in the middle. There is peak female biology and peak male biology and the myriad of variation in sex characteristics forming the valley in between. My point is that intersex people exist and are as common as redheads. Intersex means you physically have male, female, and/or in between biological sex characteristics.

Hi! you two seem a little lost, so let me break this down for you.
Sex is what your reproduction organs are based on, and guess what, there's more than two sexes! there are also people that are born with both parts! So that would make TranSEXual people male parts to woman part or woman's parts to man parts!
Gender is a social construct that society created. "Cisgender" people go by the gender they were given at birth, male or female. TransGENDER people identity and go by the opposite gender or something different! I'll use myself as an example!
I was born with women parts, but I don't identity with male or female pronouns and societal bases, meaning I would be nonbinary and use they/them, but I can still be feminine, masculine or androgynous! but Im not TranSEXual, meaning I don't want to change my sexual reproduction organs, but I do feel like my chest doesn't suit me. Does that make sense?
Another example would be Wall-E and Eve from the movie Wall-E. They both are robots and don't have sexual reproduction organs, but people still call Wall-E a Boy and Eve a girl. meaning gender is a social construct.
      I hope you both understand!💜

My teachers weren’t even allowed to use lgbtq+ terms or use gay people as examples when talking about couples until junior high and at that point it was the bare minimum- it’s not being taught in schools and that makes it hard for kids to figure themselves out when it comes to gender. I was kept somewhat isolated and I ended up ignorant for quite a bit, I still years after finding out my gender and sexuality (which took two years in the first place due to my lack of knowledge) haven’t come out because I have a hard time coming to terms with these feelings because of how long heterosexuality and cis norms were shoved down my throat by teachers, classmates, and society in general.

Kids don't need to question their sexuality at young ages. Implanting in their heads that sexual preference is more important than their character, and defining sexual identity over identifying self worth through accomplishment, is child abuse. They don't need "you" to help them make a choice to be gay, straight or trans. Why would they even be thinking about this at 8 years old unless they were exposed to the cult mentality of identity classification?. They need you, to say "the most important thing is that you take responsibility for your actions and contribute to your community in a positive way" "Express yourself by you good deeds, not what you wear or whether you have a dick or a vagina" The day will come, when all you child manipulators will be remembered as what you are....social experimental sadists with a need to self fulfill your your own identity issues and social justice guilt. Kids and teenagers go through phases, always have, and always will....but now, those phases are being hijacked by the woke mob. I see it no less destructive than white supremacy and religious cults, but with biological consequences that could last a lifetime.

I am okay with doing your gender identity shit with adults but you cross the line when you put this idea on kids!!!
