i also like using two strands of yarn and a hook a little smaller than i should use to make sure the potholder is nice and cushy and won't burn my hand or the table. ive also seen people making a rectangle and then folding it, or making two squares and connecting them

I concur. A few years back, I learned this the hard way. My mom ended up with a very lovely potholder decoration, totally unusable. 🤦♀
