This is the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. Period. All you death metal growlers out there think you know rage? No, you don't. Not rage like this.
Say what you want about my generation, but this was a #1 pop album. And even if it might have had widespread public consumption, it's also visceral, honest, and there's not a click track or prerecorded vocal in sight. Let's also take a minute to appreciate just how flipping insane Taylor Hawkins was... rip...
Agree, at the time there was such a high caliber of music to consume that this gem, and I view it today as an absolute freight train, was really just pop music. Alanis wasn’t my bag at the time but in hindsight, this song hits hard.
serious, as a snobby music teen back in the 90s..who thought seattle was the only music out there listenable..the pop music like this of the 90s, looking back,, is still some pretty amazing stuff..
@@danman6669 Well "pop" has been shorthand for 'popular' so it's kind of a chicken v. egg dilemma. And "Jagged Little Pill" is not only one of the top selling albums of all time, but you couldn't walk 20 feet in 1996 without hearing at least two of its songs on MTV/radio/etc. So what's amazing is, had it never broken big, it could have been an 'underground' record. But it broke. "bigly" in fact.
@Chris White Courtney did us a favour, Nirvana was over and stale after two records. Have you ever listened to any heavy metal band? Majority write and record all their own music. Not sure where your 90s comment is directed at, but maybe you should escape listening to radio pop, buddy. Can't wait for your judgement on heavy metal.
Chris White Exactly. Music is supposed to be fun, not inspiration for conflict. Hell, my favorites are the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and U2 - I’m a Gen Xer - but I like every sort of rock, pop and R&b, etc. that ever existed. My first favorite group was KC & the Sunshine Band, who I still jam to, by the way.

Dang! It doesn't get much better than that! Another musical icon that makes me a proud Canadian. Alanis taps into such raw emotion when she performs, it's primal in a way. What a special talent!
I remember when people got uncomfortable always giving hurricanes womens' names, but I think naming one Alanis would be a fitting tribute to the absolute torrent of rage in this song. edit: and this performance in particular. Damn.

I rarely ever, ever missed a single Letterman in all his years on the air, from the time I was 13 years old I was a loyal viewer, and this imo, stands as the best performance in the show's history.
I’m a drummer and this was the first time I noticed Taylor Hawkins. I remember talking to other drummers after this show and we were all talking about this fucking blonde kid playing drums for Alanis Morrisette and who the hell was he? He came out if nowhere. We could all recognize that he was a Stewart Copeland guy for sure. He just killed it in this band. And I never liked his drum tone more than I did when he was playing with her. Alanis made the most of this opportunity and delivered the goods. Her vocals are powerful, and indeed disturbing. Wow. So great!
This is the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. Period. All you death metal growlers out there think you know rage? No, you don't. Not rage like this.
lmao, keep discovering music bro, you are still a long way to go.
Great start tho.
The "greatest" part was that she is angry but she is still singing and carrying the tune, not just screaming
Chester's 17 second scream disagrees with the term "greatest" but this performance is absolutely amazing! #MakeChesterProud
It's definitely up there...in the same breath as The Who's "A Quick One" on the Stones' Rock'n Roll Circus imho.
Nirvana's MTV Unplugged was pretty damn good. Eric Clapton playing Tears in Heaven on SNL after his son died also was very memorable.
This is one of the most amazing, raw performances I've ever seen. Her level of emotion is off the charts, almost frightening. Epic in every way.
Not quite pop, but I get your point.
@@danman6669 right, she was on that famous Canadian 90s label, Not Quite Pop.
serious, as a snobby music teen back in the 90s..who thought seattle was the only music out there listenable..the pop music like this of the 90s, looking back,, is still some pretty amazing stuff..
There's enough energy on that stage to power a good-sized city for at least six months. I miss rock and roll.
@DJ DJ ah, ok DJ
DJ DJ I
What general genre - such as rock, jazz, blues, country, classical, etc. - would you assign to this song?
Possibly alternative grunge would you call it.?
You don't see real powerful raw talent performances like this on the late night shows/main stream music anymore...not one pre-recorded track in this, the whole band is actually making that huge sound. Fucking awesome stuff right here, crank this shit!
Wow. I bet this melted your face live. Wish I'd been there
I think it scared the hell out of the Audience.
Rest In Beats Taylor... wowza.
Damn.
Chris Chaney's bass tone is freaking incredible!!!
Tonight I played a gig in Ottawa, Canada and as soon as I jumped off the stage and opened my phone to this I was completely in shock.
This live performance is the one that sticks to me the most about him and also because im Canadian.
Its 2:15 am and il be mourning all summer about him.
The best break up song EVER! 👆🏻
I can't imagine how a live performance on letterman could be any better. Just amazing.
I rarely ever, ever missed a single Letterman in all his years on the air, from the time I was 13 years old I was a loyal viewer, and this imo, stands as the best performance in the show's history.
It's awesome. So was Sabotage by the Beasties.
Bare Naked Ladies "The Old Apartment".....
Candlebox and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies were better.
No the same type of tune, but Ray does an outstanding job!

I can’t quit watching this amazing performance.
Just that CRACK of the snare. RIP
Something about 90s snare drum... 311, Korn, Deftones, Sublime, Limp Bizkit all had that signature wound up tight and loud sound.
The energy, passion and emotion vocalized in the last "know" to end the song is breathtaking. I've watched that moment over and over and am absolutely mesmerized by it. Superb camera work to capture that moment.
The fact that she didnt edit the F'bomb makes it even better.
The quality of this performance is unmatched. Rock God.
I love Taylor..I Saw in last gig in Chile's Lollapalloza! Peace & Love to FF's family
nothing compares to 90's.
xrollinx lmao
90-95 were great, music at the end of the decade was awful. All the grunge/rock went pop or morphed into puke like Creed and Limp Bizkit and Nickelback.
@@C0C0_Nuts still better than all the fake mumble hip hop shit today lmao
Except the 60's.
Thurston Howell and the 80s
Such a groovy drummer, in the pocket sooo hard on this live version. Damn… RIP Taylor Hawkins
Total authentic songwriting and blistering performance, even more incredible for her age. Taylor Hawkins.........😢
Here for you Taylor after reading the New York Times Obituary .. true greatness right there, all of you on stage .. thanks for saying yes to Dave .. you absolutely deserve every success you’ve had, and I’m certain are an inspiration to those who inspired you; Roger Taylor and Stewart Copeland .. Rest In Peace our friend … 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 …
It just dawned on me that Alanis Morissette was grunge
Grunge was dead in '94. As corny as it sounds, it really did die around the same time Cobain died. The shit that was coming out of California and the U.K., imitating what was coming out of the PNW wasn't grunge.
@@allrequiredfields while Grunge may have peaked it certainly was not dead. The fact that it spread and continued to gain in pop culture and spawned more Grunge bands all over America is certainly evidence that it was alive and well into the late 90's. It was just another evolution of rock that came from heavy metal, punk, new wave punk, alternative etc...
@@allrequiredfields Grunge definitely wasn't dead in '94
@@allrequiredfields grunge died in 96 with the last alice in chains album Nov 96 AIC's unlpugged and Soundgardens Down on the upside album in may 96. Kurt been dead for 2 years now. Taylor’s drumming made this song great along with her vocals of course and lyrics ✌🏼
Taylor added another layer and brought it to another level. No one has been able to duplicate on any cover of this song.
The bass, the guitar so brilliant. Pure magic. Alanis on fire. And Taylor...a monster. Huge performance and energy. He'll be missed here
I never knew this before today, it was Flea and Dave Navarro from the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing on the studio version! (but not Taylor on drums)
@@Babomomebeo I don't knew about this information
My band recently picked this song up. I was looking at the bass parts and I thought to myself, "Who the fuck plays like this?" It was Flea. I got a super simple version together and now I'm trying to incorporate some of the insane playing Flea used. Props to whomever is playing bass here. He did a great job with his own improvs.
I’m coming from Broadway and the Show is amazing 👍👍👍👍👍
What a rhythem section. Taylor kills it on the drums, and that bass player is phenomenal.
Don't know who he is but he MUST be a session player because he's playing the bass line that Flea (from the RHCP) laid down on the album. And it ain't exactly easy to duplicate that.
Chris Cheney was the bass player here. He was/is also a session bassist and is absolutely incredible. Check him out.
@@scottbaron121 He's actually from Jane's Addiction, so he's far from just a session player.
@@JasonHarperRealEstate It's actually Chris Chaney, not Chris Cheney. They're both musicians, but Chris Chaney was the one who played bass on this song.

Even in 2022 this powerful performance is breathtaking! Thanks Alanis and may god take care of Taylor!
Which god? All of them? If you meant the Judeo-Christian god, then you should write His name correctly as God.
@@danman6669 😅😅
Chills every time.
A sad day, missing the bright light that was Taylor Hawkins on the drums. Rest easy bright light... 😭🎶💔
I remember watching this that night. I'd already heard the song and I knew who she was, but she was still new on the music scene. Man, I was fucking hypnotized! Her performance, her live raw, anger/pain filled, energetic absolutely, 100% perfect vocals blew me away. I fell in love with her and her music. Still blows me away today.
Alanis is one of the absolute best female vocalists I've ever heard in my life.
the chorus flanger on the voice in the bridge part sounds great.
Absolute goosebumps. The band performance, energy and emotion is on another level here. This was always such a "heavy" song - and this live performance really shows just how vocally and musically intense "You Outta Know" truly is. I was headbanging in to this in 1995 like it was a metal song.
Freakin legit. Definitely one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Every one of them killed it. Epic.
Man, if I was Dave Coulier - aka goofy "Uncle Joey" from Full House in real life in 1995, I would have feared for my life. This is wild, untamed rage. From what I've read, deservedly so.
Rest in Peace Taylor Hawkins Great great drummer
Rest In Power Taylor Hawkins.
You were the man.
the scream of that guitar at the end
Thank You Alanis for putting A woman's true emotions out there in all the raw female glory! Finally a song real women could relate with.
The difference between being a singer and an artist...laying it all out...vulnerability!
Jeff Porcaro Groove Right????!!!!!! True artists are a dying breed unfortunately. Today’s music is overproduced, fake, mindless drivel!
Karen Feck there’s still good music today
Alanis would crush Taylor Swift in a rock battle.
You're right.
Helium Road, and, FWIW, Taylor Swift knows that Alanis paved the way to make it possible for someone like Taylor Swift to have a career in music.
This song and Alanis'performance thereof is everything rock and roll can be and should be.
Ugh... this rocks so hard. I freaking love it. I get goosebumps every time I watch this!
And yet it's so ingeniously simple.
Alanis Morissette is so fucking awesome!!

That bassist is kicking ass. Those baselines are crazy.

The best songs are deeply personal. I'd hate to be the guy who pissed her off.
weird to think that she's singing about uncle Joey from full house lmao
David Scott .
Dave Coulier.
She must really love her some corny humor and cartoon impressions....and hockey. I have have 4 little kids that love that show in 2018. Much more wholesome than anything else on nowadays.
I'm from the same city as her and we understood it was a former NHL player. I believe Troy Mallette
Goddamn this was an honest moment on that stage. This wasn't a performance; it was a bloodletting.
that performance was fucking badass
Fucking epic performance.

Gorgeous. So authentic and uninhibited
This was my first exposure to Taylor’s drumming back in the day. Loved jamming to this album (some of the lesser known songs were fun as hell to play as well). RIP
