    I myself am glad that we are moving toward electric. Not having to deal with out date combustion engines is an all right deal...It great to hear that re-genitive capabilities are now here also ...

    Dolphins aren't attracted to your motor. They're riding your bow wave. They'll do it with any boat.

    I HAVE A 1970 MORGAN 22 SAILBOAT IN GREAT CONDITION AND THIS LOOKS AWESOME! I LIVED IN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY BY THE FLORIDA KEYS NOW.

    an electric motor on a sailboat without the sails is just as much fun. it's quiet and smooth and no heeling

    Ok, I've been lookin at these electric motors in boats. First off , I think they are a good replacement for sailboats but the people who demonstrate these motors are electric motors worst enemies. They don't talk about what came out of the re-powered boat (ie. weight of motor, Hp, fuel, range, speed, consumption etc.) Then they don't give much info on what they put in (ie. weight of motor and batteries, range at different speeds with installed battery bank, how long to charge with different charging options, PRICE) They go on and on about how is better but don't show how. this would tell me that it over-priced and not ready to compete with current gas or diesel motors

    Interesting. My sailboat is wind powered.

    Very cool. What is the range of the electric motor? Also, did I understand right that you can recharge the batteries while you are underway under sail power?

    I've built a electric motor system for my Alberg 30 and I love it. The only thing that would make it better is a throttle like yours. Do you retail the throttle control or know where I can purchase one? Thank you

    @ 2:16... no, no, no, you do NOT have full control over the sailboat while leaving the helm with running motor and setting the sails up....

    I suppose you can charge the battery with an on-board diesel, right. Right?

    I like this idea but if you are a blue water a sailor there well come time when you need as much prop power as you can get. To me having a good size gen, to aid in the power of the electric motor would make things feel safer at sea.
    Nether the less its a great idea with some work could make sailing as well as motor yachts a much cleaner vessel to the sea life and ours.

      You can find electric motors as big as any deisel that might be mounted in a sailboat, up to 500+ HP. The qauestion is the range if the boat has only batteries for storage.

      Electric cars are a thing. Electric semi trucks? Nope. Diesel is just the best application for the heavy, continuous load of pushing a displacement sailboat through the water.

  • @josephdupont

    does it recharge the battery

    • @jameslambden
      @jameslambden  6 років тому +2

      yes but fairly insignificant on a monohull about 100 watts at 6 knots and double it for each additional knot

  • @iancarmstrong
    @iancarmstrong 6 років тому +1

    So many sailboaters just motor off the hook and back on, and only on nice days. This might be good for them. I have yet to see a video where an electric powered boat goes into 25 mph wind and five foot waves. Not enough torque on that motor. Only good for flat water and light air. Want to try using this to keep off a lee shore in a blow?

    • @jameslambden
      @jameslambden  6 років тому +3

      The motor has plenty of power. More power than a diesel any day. How much range is the issue. If the motor is supported by a diesel generator in a true hybrid configuration then it will outperform a diesel in any conditions.

    • @iancarmstrong
      @iancarmstrong 6 років тому

      jameslambden thanks for the reply. Is there an inherent advantage in using a diesel generator to convert the energy into electricity and then into mechanical energy as opposed to turning the prop directly from a diesel motor via a prop shaft?

    • @jameslambden
      @jameslambden  6 років тому +1

      Below Approximately 75 % of hull speed, the hybrid will be more efficient, Above Approximately 75% the diesel will be more efficient. Percentage of hull speed where equilibrium occurs differs for every boat, propeller, shaft seal, electric motor, diesel motor, bottom condition, number of through hulls, etc. etc. I also refer to this speed in my book as natural boat speed, which can be quickly estimated by taking the square root of the waterline length in feet, the resultant being in knots
      At 3 knots, the Catalina 30 only needs about 500 watts, so it is more efficient to deliver 500 watts through a battery than it is through a diesel because a diesel is very inefficient in its bottom end. At the natural boatspeed of a Catalina (square root of 25 foot long waterline ) 5 knots the C-30 needs about 3 KW and at this speed the diesel becomes more efficient because it doesn't have to convert the mechanical energy to electric and then back to mechanical.

    • @iancarmstrong
      @iancarmstrong 6 років тому

      jameslambden thanks that was a sensical answer. I understand that diesels need to be kept running at higher speeds in order to maintain the pressure necessary for continuous combustion.

    • @chogg611

      Add a few solar panels to keep the batteries charged. And you can use the excess power to power other devices onboard.

    • @markleyg

      With Lithium, 2000 cycles or more.

    Obviously it isn't as good as he portraits. He hasn't any questions that has been asked. It might be good for in the harbor but can you imagine how many batteries you would need if you had to motorsail for a couple days.
    If your gas or diesel engine breaks down, almost every marina can help get it running again without too much difficulty. Loose the electric motor or its controller, good luck with that
