    This is excellent! I am currently rebuilding my 1967 Contessa 26's toerail and also bought some reclaimed teak from a Bruce Roberts 44. I never thought of painting it! Interesting idea. I also like the electric propulsion as my Co26 isn't doing to well with the weight of my outboard so far aft... Choices.

    I'm impressed with his technical ability and commitment to electric drive. However, I personally don't think I would want to run the chance of being caught in a surprise three day blow with an unfriendly reef or coast leeward and an electric only system. But that's just me, I worry about the weak link in the chain, so to speak.

    Used Lithium battery pack instead of those golf cart deep cycle old technology batteries and a small standard 5 kw gas generator or an alternative DIY which consist of taking a small 3 cylinder diesel from a crashed Smart car with a used 5 to 10 kw generator with a busted gas motor. The small diesel 3 cylinder from a totaled Smart car can be found for around 400$ to 600$, a 10 kw generator with a busted motor could be found for very cheap, from 50$ to 150$ depending on how old and which brand it is. The most expansive component will be the used battery pack from a totaled Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt or something similar. With a little planning and a well organised setup, this way to go could give very good result. For the propulsion system, the Nissan Leaf electric motor or anything similar like the Fiat 500 or the Chevy Bolt can be used to replace the gas or small diesel engine. When sailing, you can generate power 3 ways, solar panel, wind turbine and hydro turbine and charge your battery pack plus all your day to day power need inboard. In the worst condition you can always use the diesel/alternator pack and with a 40 to 80 litre tank of diesel you can run your boat for quite a while. Everything acquired used and recycled DIY, 15,000.00$ maximum for the 10kw generator with diesel 3 cylinder, 6x 325 watts solar panel, one 1,250 watts wind turbine, 2x hydro turbine at 1,500 watts each, charging controller 3 ways, a 10 kw inverter cc/ac and a 40 kw/h Lithium battery pack from a Chevy Bolt. If you chop around and take your time to get the best cost per unit, the total could be as cheap as 5,000.00$ for all the setup. If you get a totalled Chevy Bolt, you can have it for 2,000 to 2,500$ and you end-up with the electric motor for your propulsion and the 60 kw battery pack plus plenty of high grade wire. The used generator could be a bit smaller, like a 5 kw or a 7.5 kw, with the engine frozen or burned, this can be found for less than 200$ and as low as 50$ on garage sell or on craigslist/Kijiji. The diesel 3 cylinder from the Smart can be found for as little as 250$ if you're lucky, so 5,000 to 6,000$ plus your labour and time. With new concept, open mind and imagination, everything is possible.

    great video,love the red toes rails! you said they were just redone with new wood. Do you know what type of wood was used in make the new toe rail? thank you for these videos, they show very simple and go anywhere boats....

      Fabio ordered some recycled or discount teak online for the job but when it arrived it was poor quality so after gluing it on he glassed it over and painted instead of varnish. Since it's sealed in epoxy resin, he could have used other types of wood instead. Contact him thru his blog for more info.

    Anyone know of a list of boats/manufacturers that have an ALL fiberglass deck (i.e. no coring?). All sailboats I've come across at least have a cored deck. Thanks in advance! Love the videos and insights into just how great these old designs are!!

      That would be a short list since most builders and owners find the weight savings benefit of deck coring outweighs the negatives. Besides the Columbia MKI it's been reported that the West coast built Aeromarine Triton 28 has solid deck core. You might consider adding boats built with foam deck core to your list of non-wood cored boats. The Hallberg-Rassy Monsun 31 comes to mind. Maybe someone else can comment and add to the list or you can post your question on a forum like www.cruisersforum.com/

    It would seem to me, that if I had to run a generator to motor along at 3 knots and charge my battery, I would have installed an inboard. Carrying a generator and extra gas seems horrible to me. Seems to negate the whole reason for an electric motor in the fist place.

      You have a point and that's one reason why EP is not yet more widely used. If the aim is to motor long and frequently then a diesel seems more efficient. But an inboard diesel is way more intrusive and complex with all its systems and accessories than an electric drive, batteries, and a small portable gas generator and a few gallons of gas. Once you get away from coastal trips on the ICW then you rarely need to use the generator. It's just there for backup extended range. Also, in this case, the previous owner installed the system and Fabio is testing it. In another year or two it will be interesting to see if he still wants to keep it or not.

    Thank you, for Sharing your video! I am wondering now how would a Auto Pilot work with that system? How does the Trottle work to go slower or faster is it like a Hobby Train throttle? You really help me to think about getting my boat converted. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!

    I'm curious about the statement "allows to regenerate power under sail", with regards to the prop working in reverse. How much power does it generate at various speeds, such as 2 or 3 knots? If anchored will it charge the batteries as the tide goes in and out? Considering that water density is 800 times that of air I would assume the water generator would provide much more power than a windmill and be more consistent than wind and solar.

      I think I recall Fabio saying the regen only kicks in above about 4 knots and has no output at the 1-2 knots you typically find in most anchorages. The water does provide plenty of torgue but the prop is small and slow turning so it's output is less than you would expect. Apparently at around 5 knots the output is several amps so on a long passage that really adds up..You can ask him directly thru his blog at: www.squiddingaround.org/about/

      Regeneration is about 1.5 amps @48v at a speed of 5.5kts. I've never anchored in places with tides 4kts or more, but I'll check it if it happens.. Considering that the regeneration would be only at top flood or ebb, it would probably not be worth the fuss in terms of power regeneration. We have a 48v wind generator for trickle charge when at anchor.

      His motor is an old 5kW 48v Electric Yacht with brushed motor installed in 2008 by the previous owner so you'd do better with something currently produced that's more efficient. You could email Fabio through his blog at www.lapossibilitadiunisola.com/blog/contact/
