Recently I attended a special lecture from one professor at a secular university. During the lecture he did put forth the idea of Kush/Egypt sweeping up to confront the Assyrian King. Sennacherib's view of Hezekiah was that he was a worthy opponent because of the number of alliances and preparations he had made in countering the Assyrian offensive. That Sennacherib was content to leave Jerusalem alone in return for compensation speaks to the difficult position which Hezekiah had placed him in.

  • @sagesarabia5053

You didn’t finish saying what Sennacherib wrote. Allow me to complete it for you.
“Moreover, as for Hezekiah of the land Judah, who had not submitted to my yoke, I surrounded and conquered forty-six of his fortified cities, fortresses, and a large number of smaller settlements in the surrounding areas, by having ramps built and battering rams used to decimate the cities with the assault of foot soldiers, sapping, breaching, and masterful use of siege engines. I brought out of them 200,150 people, young and old and female, horses, mules, donkeys, camels oxen, and sheep and goats, which were without number, and I counted them as booty.
As for him (Hezekiah), I confined him inside the city Jerusalem, his royal city, like a bird in a cage. I set up blockades against him and made him dread exiting his city gate. I detached from his land and took his cities that I plundered and I gave these cities to Mitinti, the king of the city Ashdod, Padi, the king of the city Ekron, and Ṣilli-Bēl, the king of the city Gaza, and thereby made Hezekiah’s land and Kingdom smaller.
With regards to Hezekiah’s annual tribute and what he typically paid, I added the payment of gifts In recognition of my overlordship and imposed it upon them.
As for him, Hezekiah, fear of my lordly brilliance overwhelmed him and after my departure, he delivered to me his auxiliary forces and his elite troops whom he had brought inside to strengthen the city Jerusalem, his royal city, thereby gaining reinforcements, along with 30 talents of gold, 800 talents of silver, precious metals, large blocks of ivory beds, armchairs of ivory, elephant hides(s), elephant ivory, ebony, boxwood, every kind of valuable treasure, as well as his daughters, his palace women, male singers and female singers brought into Nineveh, my capital city, and he sent a mounted messenger of his to me to deliver this payment and to do obeisance and bowed to me with respect”

      And the point is?

    • @sagesarabia5053
      @sagesarabia5053 3 роки тому +5

@@777-Phil the traditional stories written about Sennacherib and Assyrians are mostly false.
The Assyrians were not cruel for the methods of the time permitted punishments that were used by the Assyrians.
And… with references to the siege of Jerusalem (mentioned in the Bible) in 701 BC Sennacherib’s army of 185,000 men was not mysteriously killed by an angel. Instead, Sennacherib showed mercy upon Hezekiah the king and the people of Jerusalem by accepting tribute, ending the siege and going with all the Judean gold, women and glory an ancient King could ask for
Assyrians were the first civilization with organized trade among vast areas of land, they accepted women in leadership roles… proven by the veneration of the legendary queen Shamiran.
They also were the first to create aqueducts, they were masters of geometry, astrology. Mathematics and other important sciences and discoveries for humanity
my reply is a cry for recognition that the Assyrians were not this cruel, evil empire like the Bible portrays. In many ways History has based its opinion of ancient Assyrians on the writings in the Bible particularly in Kings 2 or in Isaiah.
As an Assyrian myself it hurts.. especially after knowing that it simply takes someone to open a book and read objective accounts about the Assyrians and their accomplishments and their civilization and how they treated people. It was quite humane for the time to be real.
Romans crucified people right? Over time our punishments have become Less severe… to a point now where most countries don’t allow execution of prisoners at all. Obviously the value of human life has increased over time.
But I’ve been to the Smithsonian museum in New York and witnessed the absolute lies that the curators tell the public when describing ancient Assyrians… the majority of the references are on military battles and killings. Not their positive contributions to society. Not their innovative spirit. Not their leadership in world trade. Not their establishment of western law.. think Hammurabi.
Assyrian history has been hijacked. Yes they had their beefs with Judah at the time.. the Israelites of the time weren’t saints themselves. One of The reasons why Sennacherib invaded Judah in the first place was because Hezekiah kidnapped an important Assyrians governor named Padi
Sennacherib mentions padi in his message regarding Jerusalem on the Taylor
Prism. He says he gives land back to Padi to govern or something like that.
I’m addition to kidnapping Governor Padi, Hezekiah conspired with a long time enemy of the Assyrians. A dude name maradach baladin who captured Babylon (which belonged to Assyria) and started attacking and killing people in neighboring Assyrian towns/villages
Hezekiah conspired with maradach baladin to take Assyria down shortly after Sennacherib became King.
Maradach sent his Babylonian emissaries to Jerusalem after Hezekiah fell ill. It is mentioned in the book of Isaiah… they discussed attacking Assyria and Hezekiah showed them his Arsenal including weapons, gold, he discussed strategy etc etc
When Isaiah found out about this he flipped out because he said the Babylonians would betray Hezekiah and they’d be able to easily win a battle because Hezekiah showed them all of his tricks and secrets. At that time, Isaiah predicted that the Jews would become the subjects of the Babylonians one day. That was his prophecy. It came
True later in the book of Daniel
There is so much more to the story… but I’ll wrap up because you’ve probably stopped reading my now lol.
But ultimately, Hezekiah conspired against the Assyrians with maradach baladin.. and also the Egyptians.
Sennacherib was simply defending his people by responding to ehe threat.
      There’s so much more
To the story. I’ll be happy
      To share more
      If you
Would like. But this is probably already waaay too much lol.
Obviously you can tell I geek out on this stuff.
      God bless.

Because Hezekiah surrendered after the fall of Lachish, as mentioned in 2 Kings 18:14. Also, there was the Egyptian threat, mentioned in 2 Kings 19:9. I view the account of the angelic massacre as Exilic fiction, and view the whole account of Sennacherib's invasion in Kings as divided into three sources-a brief annalistic one, a longer Josianic one, and an Exilic addition to the Josianic one.

Ramat Rahel was established as an Assyrian center and shows no evidence of destruction (except after the Early Persian period). Why would the Assyrian army spend further resources to attack Jerusalem when there were rumors of another Egyptian army coming up, Judah had just surrendered, and its king had made promises to pay further tribute?

Esarhaddon's incursions came after Sennacherib. Lower Egypt is a name for the Delta, not Nubia (the lowest part of the Nile is where it enters the Mediterranean). Taharqa was not King of Kush at the time of Sennacherib (a mistake of a Biblical author), but he could easily have led a campaign to Philistia in 701 BC, as Kush ruled Egypt during the 25th Dynasty. Do you remember "Eltekeh"?! A fairly important confrontation between Egypto-Kushite and Assyrian forces just before the invasion of Judah.

Seems to me a bit of pedantic drivel aimed at destroying faith in JESUS, like Sennacherib himself, in his military boasting with non-bullshit 'unbiased historic' accounts. Lachish was small, but strategically important-cf. the numerous lmlk impressions discovered there. It seems from his destroy-Shephelah-first policy that Sennacherib probably did not mean to destroy Judah or to turn it into a province so much as to weaken its local power.

I understand how a statement as this looks to the unbeliever but I tell you as an Iraq War combat veteran that I literally have stood face to face with Satan and was tricked into possession (before had and knowledge, wisdom, understanding from on High) My point is during the exorcism, when the pastor asked what name, Satan growled out of me, "Sennah". Later I found this name in 2 Kings & Isaiah, pretty much referencing a letter reproaching the living God by Satan through Sennacherib! The LORD as my Witness this is what took place.

Sennacherib claims he spared Jerusalem because Hezekiah's soldiers deserted him, to save their lives, and accept Sennacherib's terms he gave, before the siege, promising them their lives if they deserted Hezekiah: "Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat of his own vine...fig tree...cistern." (2 Kings 19:31) "Hezekiah...whose irregular and elite troops which he had brought into Jerusalem, his royal residence, in order to strengthen it, had deserted him.." (pp. 200-201. "Sennacherib the Siege of Jerusalem." James B. Pritchard, editor. _The Ancient Near East. An Anthology of Texts and Pictures._ Vol. 1. Princeton University Press. 1958)

Where in the Bible are you reading "plague"? Have you even read the verse you reference? Maybe you meant 2 Kings 18:31? 19:31 is what YHWH is telling Hezekiah what will happen. In an interlinear bible and KJV, there is NO mention of troops inside the walls leaving. As a matter of fact, chpt 18 states that NOT ONE person on the wall answer the commander.
In Sennacherib's Prism, he even says he is able to get mercenaries and Arabs to flee, but doesn't mention any troops at the level you speak of! Josephus, Berossus, and Herodotus all agreed and wrote about the Hebrew account.
Not sure what you are trying to accomplished, but you failed in delivery as what you write is false..... It apparent that James Pritchard is blowing hot air, why, I don't know.....

Which "god"?Why are People still repeating the rubbish written in that ghastly book of lies, the bible? What a wonderful "loving, just and merciful" creature must the god of the bible be,who, according to the Speaker kills,in one night, without any compunction or discrimination,185000 soldiers of Sennacherib's army.If this wonderful, supernatural being can work such wonders why did he allow then the Assyrians to overthrow the "jingdom of Israel"?Or were the Jews of Israel less important than thóse of Judah? The whole Story is utter bloody nonsense!

Yawn. Are you a child? Because your questions are at a Sunday school level. - God destroys the wicked and extinguishes evil because he is Holy and good. He destroyed Assyria and he destroyed Israel and unless you repent he will destroy you too.
