I think most girls who keep a hair set for days (or more) will tell you that brushing is the key to keep hair clean without a build up of grease. The oils produced by your scalp (unless there are odd circumstances, like infection) are meant with that 100 strokes of a hair brush to be distributed through the hair to keep it shiny and protected. When you see Marsha Brady brushing her hair 100 strokes, that's why she's doing it - it was the conventional wisdom until shampoo commercials told us we were dirty unless we over-washed our hair. I'm quite guilty of over-washing my hair, though! I'm apparently very susceptible to shampoo commercials, lol.
@@anavillegas6199 - That's because you wash it every day though :P You constantly wash out the oil, so your scalp constantly has to produce more to replace it. My hair used to get greasy after just a day without washing it, but since I got used to washing it less and less frequently, I can go 4 days before it begins to get greasy and flat.
I had no idea about that, :o I shall try the 100 strokes of a hairbrush from now on since I suffer from oily hair but I hate how dry my hair feels after a shower :(
i thought it was great how they encouraged woman to be themselves at their best and not try to copy others. Also the emphasis on how a good diet and exercise effects one’s appearance. A very progressive video that stands the test of time in many ways
Hahaha, yeah, a "good, brisk dusting" would not improve my health or beauty at all. My family would've come home to a frightful sight where my teary red eyes and runny red nose did absolutely nothing to bring out any natural beauty or soft lines... And they'd be left disgusted by the pile of used Kleenex and left hungry because I wouldn't have been able to stop sneezing, much less cook dinner! 🤣 My Mama and Grandma kept fit for the longest time trying to keep up with a huge brood of kids each, though. My Grandma could've fit right into this commercial; she "briskly walked" every morning of her entire life that I knew her, until cancer took her down! Mama tried, but we really just drove her a bit crazy... And we lived in the country, where it was impossible to get to our house without driving on dirt roads, so any and all dusting was vigorous by necessity. 🤣 As for the makeup, I think we were lucky that all of the females in my family (and most in Mama's and Daddy's) used the minimalist approach, beautifully demonstrated here (though we used less). We weren't even ALLOWED to wear makeup until we were 16, but even then, we didn't wear much, if any. I didn't start wearing it really until I started working in corporate America (Except my fun and awesome black, silver, and dark purple stuff when hanging out with friends (before Goth was Goth), but that was only for a short time).

I am truly enjoying this series. It's a lot of fun to see the vintage beauty videos and hear the tips. My dad was going through some boxes he had packed from my grandmother's house after she passed away. He found a shoebox with some of her makeup from when she was younger. It's so cool to see the compacts and packaging. I love how beautifully ornate the compacts were. It's nice to have this piece of my grandmother.
Very fun video. Yes, the recommendation to brush your hair with 100 strokes a day was common in the 1800s and up to the 1960s. As you mentioned back then they shampooed only once a week. Using a much less harsh shampoo and hair powder everyday instead. Brushing distributed both the natural hair oils and the hair powder which would pull out dirt and excess oil. Did they actually do this much brushing in the 1950s....probably not because those curl sets were meant to last 3 to 5 days. A common 1950s way to tell someone you couldn't go out on a date was that you were "washing your hair" that night. Which could be true because washing, setting and brushing out hair took a long time.
Felt so nostalgic watching this video! These are the videos that my grandmother and great-grandmother were shown in finishing classes. The same activities I watched them carry out throughout their lives. Brings back good memories, thank you for the time and effort you put into this video.
The22726 Got it right. They had a set "hair wash" day back then, and you washed your hair with the very harsh shampoo they used back then. Every day they brushed their hair with boar bristle brushes to distribute the natural oils and pull the oil from the scalp all the way down the hair shaft. I have curly and frizzy hair and yes, brushing it like that will make it frizz at first, but if you sleep in a silky hair cap (I use a $4 satin cap from WalMart!) and brush it regularly, your hair will eventually calm down and get its natural curl back. I admit, it's a bit of a pain to me, so I only brush my hair before bed, when it doesn't matter how frizzy my hair gets. ;)
You probably have curls. I thought I just had frizzy hair too; turns out it’s just curly! Look up “natural curly girl method”. Literally made my hair sooo beautiful.
After brushing it they would wear rolls or pins to bed, the next day the hair only had to be a little brushed and fixed and it looked perfect. Something like this ua-cam.com/video/xuZKOY6uGmI/v-deo.html

Remember, it's never too soon to get lip fillers and botox. If you're 25, you're already ancient." --now
And on the other side of the coin- Then: make sure you're exercising by dusting for your husband, and be sure to never wear lipstick or mascara to school or everyone will know you're a harlot. Now- it's okay to be single, vote, wear whatever what makes you happy.
@@noonespecial9233 - The video didn't say it made them "harlots". That's your own personal projection. They equated it to going to school in an evening gown, which isn't "harlotesque", so clearly it was meant in the sense, that make-up was something you used for special occassions and to look extra nice. Wouldn't it honestly be much nicer, to not have to wear a full instagram-pic make-up everyday just for going shopping and stuff? Honestly. I remember a few girls on my school had the problem, that they didn't know what to do when it was time for the school galla at the end of the year, cause they wore full, all-out make-up every day, so when it came time to look "extra", there was nothing they could do, so they looked pretty much the same at the galla as they did every other day.
Honestly, it's fine if folks wanna look "extra" every day. It's also fine if people want to do understated makeup. Hell, if people don't care about looking attractive at all, that's okay! In all honesty, though, it does still work. I have dark blue eyes and I'm always recommended orange eyeshadow. Orange. ORANGE!! It looks nightmarish and I look like I'm recovering from some sort of terrible illness. Same for anything with strong warm tones (except for gold, but even that isn't very flattering). Anything with a cool, blue hue--like slate grey, light lilac, or even a light steel blue, makes my eyes pop. So I actually agree with "old" color matching more than I do with new...
@@ZovestaDark Sounds like you have a cool or pink undertone? Orange looks pretty wild on me too for that reason. And most commercial browns have muddy yellow undertones that don't flatter cool skin. Try the Lime Crime Venus palette. Disregard everything you've heard about pinks, it's easily the most flattering eyeshadow palette for dark blue eyes and cold toned skin. The taupe has this slight pink undertone that brings out blue but doesn't war with cool undertoned skins. That real my eyes but better look.

Gosh, you and the lady in the video look sooo lovely after this!! Excellent job, I love the look. :) Besame makes wonderful vintage style lipsticks that actually last forever and have strong pigment, unlike the mostly waxy lipsticks we have nowadays, if you ever want to get really authentic. ;) I like how you included perfume too! Cleaning is good exercise, and of course a lot of families were one car households and mom had to walk to the grocery store to get groceries, then walk back with arms full of groceries... Lots more exercise in general back then!
I actually soak my face in my setting spray. Like not a smooth mist, but close to dripping. And when I didnt want to spend money on a setting spray, i would just put water in a spray bottle and do the same. Easy dewy and set right there.
12:10 - they definitely had powder puffs and big fluffy makeup brushes in the 1950’s! I think what this tutorial is trying to say is that applying makeup with a disposable applicator is the most sanitary method. Unfortunately, cotton balls are/were the most universal disposable tool for the 20th century (and 21st, LoL)!
This was fun. I have fine wavy blond hair. It is down to my hips. I can tell you for my hair I wash every 4/5 days. Brush out about 75 strokes a day, not all in one sitting that will kill ya. Braid the last day or two. But it is usually up. If I shampoo more often it gets dry and just not healthy feeling. I have tried treatments and conditioning therapies but really just not washing as often and brushing keeps it healthy. My hair has changed so much in the past 10 years. Anyway thanks for these blasts from the past.
Do you think you could substitute a modern synthetic puff for the cotton balls so you dont have to keep torturing yourself for these videos? I love my puff and it both reminds me in looks like the flattened cotton ones my grandmother used to use, but in feel and texture on my skin like the lambswool I used when I danced to protect my feet (pointe). They may work better for you and they are less wasteful since you can wash them like your brushes - or even toss them in the washing machine on gentle in a lingerie bag and then on the cool setting in the dryer if you dont want to wait for them to air dry - mine usually takes about 36 hours to fully dry out in a sunny window. I also remember my grandmother going to the salon to have her hair washed and styled once a week, she would use a shower cap at home so she never got it wet the rest of the time. This was in the 80's but she was a young wife and mother in the 50s and according to my mom her routine basically never changed from then.
I love the puff that comes with Coty Airspun and also the ones that come with the ELF lose powder, they have a little band I can slip my fingers in. I hand wash them with baby shampoo.
please keep doing these!! theyre so fun and i do this a lot when im bored :p theres an 80s one thats like an hour long but thats because its for young girls and older women so maybe you could follow the young skin one :)
Rachel Colvin Apparently it was done by some because the steam made the makeup look more natural....If only they had setting and finishing mists instead 🤔
ive always washed my hair once a week, but my dad is black so it sort of became normal for my family - including my mum who is a fully celtic woman and has that flaming red Merida-type hair. I kind of got a mix of both and it goes dry and frizzy if i wash it too often, needs that natural oil to stick
Loepsie, I just want to tell you that I have the EXACT same issue with cotton. It makes me so uncomfortable to feel and hear cotton balls rub together or even just thinking about it. So glad I am not alone:)
They used to tell you to brush 100 times to spread the oils throughout your hair and stimulate the scalp but now they say if you look at hair under a microscope you'll see that the best thing to do is brush your hair only enough to get the knots out and then stop because brushing tends to break your hair.
when wet maybe or if youre using some cheap ass brush. Back then things were made with the intent of long term use so generally better quality than the crap they sell to us now. They get away with it because people aren't as attentive or aware of such things nowadays...they don't take the time to really have a full beauty routine that takes time and cultivation. Everything is instant, disposable, and cheap as hell. These routines and videos were developed by actual scientists so I trust them over some random talking heads who aren't versed in beauty science or huge corporations who could care less about the science behind it or the importance of quality/materials and sell you anything for a quick buck (plastic)
Huge 👍🏼. I love this series. I do think it would be helpful for you to have all the tools and makeup you need to hand so you’re not scrambling to find things during the video.
I used to wash my hair with shampoo once a week (now I’am no poo) but during the week I would wash it with just water wich also made my hair less greasy once it got used to it
I wash my hair once a week, but rinse it out otherwise. I was told by my hairdresser it’s not bad although i have colored hair but also pretty dry. Some shampoos don’t do well for your hair. So once a week washing and a cream conditioner. My hair is better now
I wash my hair either every day or once every other day, I exercise every single day and I work up a sweat at the gym or I go swimming so I feel gross if I don't shower or wash my hair.
This is the first video of yours I've seen and when you freaked over that cotton ball I knew you were awesome. I CAN'T STAND THEM! Its like feeling the sound of nails down a chalkboard
I only comb my hair in the shower after finger-combing, and I only use shampoo every couple weeks while conditioning every day. I have 3A curly hair though
Okay is it just me or does one of the models in the video look like the Rock Johnson with makeup. Like they look beautiful but is that just me?????? 😂❤️❤️ love this video so much
you did a great job, my Mama was a you woman in the 1940s and you pretty much followed her style of makeup. I still remember her using cake mascara in the early 70s, when I was finally allowed to wear it in the late 70s Mama updated her idea to modern mascara. You look lovely, this is the first time I've watched you, may I ask where you're from? Love from Phoenix, Arizona
That was fun! Loved the makeup - very pretty look on you, and I don't the the eyeshadow look was "retro & dated" at all - it's what the MUAs call a "one shadow look" these days (rather the same way "old fashioned" contouring with multiple blushes (rouge) has now been renamed "draping"). I hope you can find more of these film clips, because I'd love to see this "series" continue. It's been great to see how many of these old tips, tricks and methods still have value today (and how many of them are some of my makeup routine fundimentals, taught to me by my gran, my mum, etc). Oh, and I had to laugh at the no makeup to school thing - I'm Aussie and girls have never been allowed to wear makeup to school (uniforms are still worn here too)... we'd try to cheat it by wearing tinted lip balm, but you'd be reapplying it 10 times a day after every time a teacher noticed it was suspiciously not natural and made you wipe it off. LOL.
I love 4711. Reminds me of my Ouma too. But I had a bit of a giggle because last year I learned it was super popular in the transvestite scene in the 70s because if it’s vented neutral smell. Dr Frankenfuter in Rocky Horror has a 4711 tattoo in his leg in the film. 😂
When I was a child I used to be afraid of anything soft and fluffy: stuffed toys, cotton, feathers, fur... I would visibly shake if I touched it or even looked at it. So I understand your feelings towards cotton balls! Lol and now, when I grew up, it's only feathers that freak me out
I can’t touch cotton either. *shudder* even just the thought of you touching your face with it makes all my hairs stand on end, my whole body in tingling with goosebumps! 😖
"The beauty of the eye is what you see, not the makeup." I think the overall philosophy of the makeup tutorial was awesome 💕👍

The wet sponge technique reminds me of today's dipping your face into water idea, and according to some women these days, that method works. ☺
I love your videos! It is great to do historical makeup.
You look really pretty!
Clinique have these wonderful chubby sticks for the cheeks and they work beautifully❤
Gosh, your skin was really gorgeous (also you). I can't stop to adore you. Can you make a video on how you take care your skin?
I love these videos so much!! 💫
please keep doing these!! theyre so fun and i do this a lot when im bored :p theres an 80s one thats like an hour long but thats because its for young girls and older women so maybe you could follow the young skin one :)
Did the lady in the "clean look" vidoe just take a bath after doing her makeup???
Rachel Colvin Apparently it was done by some because the steam made the makeup look more natural....If only they had setting and finishing mists instead 🤔
@@Poorstargazer23 I shower after doing my makeup, it reduces the powdery look.
Love ya!!... I have bangs too it's because of you... I'm inspired yayyy😅💕💕💕
I like that older lady, she looks classy lol I also brush my hair outside whenever I can, it feels fresh, idk if I make sense lol you nailed it!
Oh my gosh!!! I cannot touch cotton either!! I am so happy to finally find someone else with the same cotton complex as me :)
ive always washed my hair once a week, but my dad is black so it sort of became normal for my family - including my mum who is a fully celtic woman and has that flaming red Merida-type hair. I kind of got a mix of both and it goes dry and frizzy if i wash it too often, needs that natural oil to stick
Omg I thought i was the only person who was freaked out by cotton wool then I saw this! I'm so glad I'm not the only one@ x
This was so fun to watch!
Love this type of videos!!!!!
I used to wash my hair with shampoo once a week (now I’am no poo) but during the week I would wash it with just water wich also made my hair less greasy once it got used to it
You look very pretty in this makeup!
You're so adorable! I love your reactions to the video. I'm subscribing for sure.
"can I take the towel off now? Please. " 😂 Love this
How fun! Made me smile. 🥰
I've got 12th winning thanks to Mr Gary Gensler he's really the best, I've made £16,400 in 18 days working with him

I wash my hair once a week, but rinse it out otherwise. I was told by my hairdresser it’s not bad although i have colored hair but also pretty dry. Some shampoos don’t do well for your hair. So once a week washing and a cream conditioner. My hair is better now
"Feel the blood tingling..."
"Oh yea!"
Literally died. You're so funny XD
I wash my hair either every day or once every other day, I exercise every single day and I work up a sweat at the gym or I go swimming so I feel gross if I don't shower or wash my hair.
I always remember my mother using her wide cream rouge stick.😄
This is the first video of yours I've seen and when you freaked over that cotton ball I knew you were awesome. I CAN'T STAND THEM! Its like feeling the sound of nails down a chalkboard
Lucy you have the cutest personality. Complemented by your beauty.
I only comb my hair in the shower after finger-combing, and I only use shampoo every couple weeks while conditioning every day. I have 3A curly hair though
as someone with curly hair, i wish i knew what brushing dry hair with ease was like. looks so satisfying
You need to do 40s too😘💕
The 40s is basically the same, just more skoncare involved and from i remember they didnt really use eyeshadow or they used natural colored eyeshadows
That makeup style is amazing on you best look I’ve seen on you yet ^_^ new subscriber so watching all videos back to back ^_^
Oh my gosh I was dying, I thought I was the only one in the world that had a thing about touching cotton balls!!! 🤣🤣🤣👍
😂so funny with the cottonball☁️☁️☁️
Omg, my mother makes me remove the cotton from tylenol bottles 🤣🤣 I didn't know there were others
Yes, indeed, haha! And the cotton from the vitamin bottles as well! Very vintage not to waste anything. 🙂
Okay is it just me or does one of the models in the video look like the Rock Johnson with makeup. Like they look beautiful but is that just me?????? 😂❤️❤️ love this video so much
I’m naturally curly (3b) brushing out curls/ ringlets!!!! 😱😬🤬 NEVER!!!!!
Siobhán K. Hahaha same I cRINGED! 3a girl here 🤙
I have Curly hair.. But with my length it created waves. With a vintage style you Brush out a curl set to create a uniform Wave
The eyeshadow may look outdated, but you look lovely with it.
I HATE touching cotton buds too! And flour! It gives me shivers all through my body.
you did a great job, my Mama was a you woman in the 1940s and you pretty much followed her style of makeup. I still remember her using cake mascara in the early 70s, when I was finally allowed to wear it in the late 70s Mama updated her idea to modern mascara. You look lovely, this is the first time I've watched you, may I ask where you're from? Love from Phoenix, Arizona
Are you buying your glasses on line? I'm loving them!
LOL.
I wash my hair once a week and brush daily with a natural bristle brush. It works.
I liked the message be ur self etc..
You are soo cute dear 😍😍😍
I love 4711. Reminds me of my Ouma too.
But I had a bit of a giggle because last year I learned it was super popular in the transvestite scene in the 70s because if it’s vented neutral smell.
Dr Frankenfuter in Rocky Horror has a 4711 tattoo in his leg in the film. 😂
Lol 🎵 what a waaaaste🎶 lol that made me giggle!
When you're hair was back, you had a look of Elizabeth Taylor... love these videos
When I was a child I used to be afraid of anything soft and fluffy: stuffed toys, cotton, feathers, fur... I would visibly shake if I touched it or even looked at it. So I understand your feelings towards cotton balls! Lol and now, when I grew up, it's only feathers that freak me out
why are you so beautiful without makeup?! 😭❤️
Love your videos.... I wash my hair twice a week.
I can’t touch cotton either. *shudder* even just the thought of you touching your face with it makes all my hairs stand on end, my whole body in tingling with goosebumps! 😖
The less you can get away with washing your hair the better. The more you wash it, the more oil it produces and the quicker it gets greasy
The voice reminds me of the old animations Cinderella from Disney
I do miss how lovely everyone would ware their hair back then.. men and women !
Do you have a link to that cologne? I would love to try it but I can’t seem to find one that looks like yours
Its 4711 cologne. Hers was a special edition one. The original ones come in a blue or tealish bottle.
I have that same eyeshadow
