Southwest Airlines commercial circa 1972

- Ahhhh, nostalgia. They don't make them like this anymore - commercials or "flight attendants". One has to wonder how many takes they had to do until they got the timing right - this was, of course, before CGI ruined everything.
I worked at Southwest at the time they shot this and I was told that they did it in one take and the plane cleared her head by 20'.
How cool is that, today's standerds, that wouldn't fly.
no pun intended.
Do you remember her name? I wasn't hired until a decade later, but she was still working.
I heard that she was a model and not an employee - can't confirm -
@@LanaRainbow69 All Southwest ads feature employees where employees are shown. Retired SWA 30+ years.
@@LanaRainbow69 There is an interview with several SW execs & attendants. They said that was the one instance they didn't use a SW employee, because of the danger. Another employee recalled it took 6 takes, because she was flinching. That is probably the case. The vice president of operations was the pilot. The exec said the plane was takng off, probably because the FAA would frown big frowns over an airliner flying 20 ft over people. The landing gear was fully retracted. The model had everything tied down & braided.
Best commercial ever. Southwest has a business model to admire
This ad proves the 21st century sucks.
Not anymore they don’t
You have to remember that shes at the very end of the runway, and that airplane is higher than you think.
Holy crap even then Southwest was badass!
One of the greatest airline commercials of all time.
Remove "One of" and drop the "s" on "commercials" and you're still correct.
Very Best Regards,
Tom Scott

I bet she spends all the ad revenue from this commercial on hearing aids.
+New American Fishkeeper I seriously doubt it. I don't think the flight attendant in this commercial had to have hearing aids.
Aaahhuuuuuuuhhhh !!! This is awesome !! I´d like to be back in the 70´s. That was a great time.
Look at the smokey engines from 737!
EVERYWHERE I GO!!!
Like a Phantom lol
Ayo I knew I'd find you here
one engine worn worse than the other?
@@willg.6168 This explains the smokey engine. ua-cam.com/video/tAbGW3i3LM0/v-deo.html
No more free cocktails or legroom, But Southwest still is the best!
PSA(Pacific Southwest Airlines) of San Diego, California. Had stewardesses wearing revealing outfits and LOUD colours of red, pink, magenta, orange uniforms. THOSE WERE THE DAYS.
Dude, this was shot in like 1972, there were no green screens back then!
This is how it really was!
They did have green screens back then but you can tell this is the real stuff
If I almost pass out watching this coolness, I wonder what people thought back in the day when this was new.
My mom told me, that in 1993 (When I was 3 years old) a Malev Captain carried me through the intire airport because my mom had to carry all the luggage.
Now THATS serive.
Btw. It was with a Tupolev 134 :p
Wish the SW flight attendents were still like that...
They are all the same women just old and wrinkly now 😂
Free cocktails for everyone and an ashtray in one armrest of every seat! Early flights used the "Long Legs And Short Nights" theme for stewardesses on board typical Southwest Airlines flights. A committee including the same person who had selected hostesses for Hugh Hefner's Playboy jet selected the first flight attendants, females described as long-legged dancers, majorettes and cheerleaders with "unique personalities." Southwest Airlines dressed them in hot pants and go-go boots.
Jim B why do we care
Avery the Airplane.....because the old overweight hags we have now don’t even come close...that’s why we care!!!
@@tonyossipov I apologize that I can only thumb up your comment once! Agree! You are wise!
@@tonyossipov The airplane attendants aren’t just there to be pretty, they’re there because they are actually important for your safety.
@@gwynzynoodles2553 That's funny...
I lived in Dallas next to Love Field Airport from 1973 on. Loved watching the planes take off and land.
Got to be the coolest airline commercial (for me) ever! The ones from the 70s are cute but sooooo corny. This one is sooooo cool!
fly me back to the 70s
I love how that thing didn't just fly over, it was fucking bookin it.. Haha
Amazing clip! She must have nerves of steel!
Coffee, tea, or me?
Are those the must-have fashion of the day; Hotpants?!!!
Oh yeah ... definitely.
Yes........with go-go boots.
Hot Pants WERE the dress code for flight attendants - back when they had weight restrictions
that's cool seeing one of the original commercials! i love southwest airlines and i have an interview for a flight attendant position with them in a few weeks!!!
So what happened? We need an update!
They should redo that commercial that was sweet
She must have trusted that pilot a hell of a lot to do this. Perhaps she'd also gone through a drill of hitting the concrete if she got the signal from her lookout crew. 1970s flight attendants confirmed for having nerves of steel.
Utterly vintage!
This is one of the greatest commercials I have seen. Miss the 70s. They should allow for a "throwback day", everyone would love it.
Southwest should've done a new commercial for their 40th anniversary last year. The first 20 seconds of the ad would've been footage of the original 1971 ad, but then at 0:21 as the 737-200 flies over, it would directly cut to new footage of a 737-700 Winglets flying past the camera in the current blue WN livery, with an announcer saying "Celebrating 40 Years of LUV. Southwest Airlines"
Yes, It was awesome. They really wore go-go boots and short dresses, but it was only Southwest and they stopped a long time ago(Early 80's I think.)
I still remember my very first flight in 1990 when I was around 3 years old. the stewardess was lot more friendlier and charming and even noticed my boredom face during those killing non stop flight from LA to Hong Kong.
I did not get that experience nowadays, even when I paid double sometimes just for the sake of extra leg room :p
actually i have to agree. only 46, but I remember the days in the early 70's when people actually dressed up and it was a joy to fly...
anyone remember Delta's old "Medallion Class"... today its a bus
I do remember what it was like before somebody else up there loved me. Then, there were my heavenly '70's flings with Southwest and Braniff. Now, no one loves me up there again. But, oh, the memories.
I remember when they used to call Southwest "Angel Airlines."
Amaizing commerical! almost 40 years ols and beats the ones form nowadays!
Love the JT8D!!!!
Legroom and legs! Whatta winning combination!
I remember this commercial when it was first run
Below this video, people who cry at home while they dont do anything about their problems outside of it
LOVE IT
What a great ad. Fun, a little sexy, and really dramatic.
They only filmed this commercial once. See all the smoke that is rolling out of the right engine? The original plane that was supposed to do the fly over went down for maintenance and that was their reserve plane. Had to learn about it in Aviation Marketing.
Holy shit I saw this commercial on a retro channel and I couldn't believe they were allowed to do that
Just found out that commercial was created and filmed by Donald P. Bellisario (creator of Magnum PI, Quantum Leap, JAG, NCIS etc.)
Thank you partner!
She must be wearing some mighty powerful earplugs.
she's probably around 80 now, so i'd say she's working at delta
The good days.
GUYS!! It's 1972! There were no personal computers! How could they animate it like they would today?
I noticed the exact same thing flying Japan Air to Tokyo in the early 90s. Coming back, the final leg of my trip was on American Airlines and I couldn't believe the stark contrast on every level between levels of service. I was about 18 but never forgot how beautiful, polite, and fresh the stewardesses were on JAL, even after 11 hours.
Ahhh, the glorious heydays of flying. Wouldn't be cool if they reinstate that uniform for at least once every year (like on Southwest's Anniversary)
Considering the crappy working conditions and pay concessions imposed on flight attendants, pilots, and support crews in the 30+ years since government deregulation and the major bankruptcies after 9/11, i would be quite surprised if any of them are still working nearly 40 years later.
Flippen awesome
The author of this video was wondring how many takes to get it right.....I would imagine not to many with the operating costs of a B737-200. GREAT VIDEO AND GREAT SOUND!! I LOVE IT!!
This is from that brief period following the adoption of jetliners, but prior to the adoption of pants.
@carolwoody2 You' are so correct, Carol! I'm in my mid 40's and remember traveling from Phila to Hollywood Florida several times a year b/c my grandfather lived there. We would take NORTHEAST AIRLINES (Remember the old "Yellowbird" jingle?--Yellow-bird, we make your vacations fun//Yellow bird, our service is number one....).
Yes, those WERE the days and I'm privileged to have lived through them!
1. Damn that's a short miniskirt!
2. Free cocktails for everyone?
3. You see all that smoke on the old 737?
Right on!!
Pepperidge farm remembers
Wow. You know your stuff. Thanks for the info.
You might be right. Still have a hard time believing they would put a model/actress in the path of a real airplane :)
aah very short dress wish flight attendants were still like that :P
i don't remember. but thanks for sharing this video.
YOU GO GIRL!!!!
cute outfits! i think she still works for SW, most stewardesses are old compared to other countries'. i fly international all the time and thats one big difference, along with the service.
Shit! I was born 25-30 too late! Things were simpler yet funner in those days!
Remember when the world was not being overrun by killjoys and prudes?
Composite shots and stuff have been around for a long time.. The Rear Window, Pyscho, The Birds, etc., all pre-date this ad by a few decades.
Actually, the commercial was made in 6 takes. The Flight attendant is Linda Pinka, one of the first 10 FA's hired at SWA. She is Real, the Runway is Real, and the Plane is Real. It was done in 6 takes because she kept ducking when the plane flew over her.
They must have burned through a ton of fuel. I guess after six takes, she got used to it.
Used to fly with Pinka and it doesn't look like her, but I could be wrong.
@@kenlott8488 Other videos with Herb-? said this is only one of 2 commercials where they hired actors. The vice head of operations is at the controls of the jet. All very real. I bet she had words with her agent after.
I cry when i watch this, it reminds me of how far the Human race has gone.
For thousands of years of pain and sadness and blood, sweat and tears, we are finally coming into an age of safety and greatness.
"Humans have been through so much crap, i cry becuase of that."
Ya
Those were the days....
Have you flown lately?
they only had one take to do this becuase they only had enough money for one take. They had only 3 or 4 aircraft at the time. one of the aircraft was in reserve, (the one they were to use in this commercial). However, one of the planes that was in service went down for maintainence and they had to give up the "Standby Aircraft". The one in this commercial is the one that went down for repairs. This explains the massive amounts of smoke coming out of the #2 engine
Rolling coal when there was still coal to roll.
Free cocktails? Back in the day it must have been fun to fly. Not like the "flying bus" experience as of late.
From what I know, they had to do the scene over many times because she kept flinching.
I have been watching that women for years now and no one ever told me what was her name and where she is today ?!...
What a great TV spot. Brilliant and hot.
I can't believe they pulled that off and I'm surprised she could speak correctly.
I do no how they have the guts to say that with CGI it goes faster and cheaper. To make this shot you just need a good timing. You do it once and it is on tape. And you don't need 10 nerds who will work during a month trying to make the scene as real as possible but in the end failing at it.
FX in the camera: faster, direct result, cheaper, looks more real then cgi will ever be.
CGI: cost a lot, a lot of people is required, ultra sofisticated PC's, a result that will never top reality.
Yup. I wonder if they had to do more than one take.
yup, true... the most 'safe' and 'secure' way to dress is in sweat pants, sandals, and a t-shirt.
Looks like the burner can filter wasnt fitted to engine number 2, which is why its smokier...
They weren't forced to wear the uniforms, especially not by the pilots. The other, well-can't say, wasn't there.
I wish we had flight attendants like that today. Now many(but not all) are old ladies. I would have been scared as hell if I were that Pilot. Trying not to land on top of someone standing in the middle of the runway.
The only reason to watch old air disaster movies is the shots of the great aircraft, well dressed passengers and crews, and well appointed cabins with plenty of leg room. I wish people still dressed up to fly. People wear sweats now, and not always recently washed ones. What's up with that? I want people to care how they look, stews that are dressed like that girl, and Dean Martin flying the plane. ;)
Pepperidge Farms remembers.
That's very true.
back when all you had to pay on the airline was a ticket. no $5 for a bag of chips or soda
I wonder how many takes it took before this poor lady lost her hearing completely.
They didn't start doing that until sometime around 1995 or so, and that remained Southwest's slogan until about 2008 or 2009.
That's what "deregulation" did to the industry. The masses can fly today (unfortunately). This wasn't the case prior to 1978. Thank Jimmy Carter for the long lines, flight delays, congested airports, air rage and bankruptcies of legacy carriers like Eastern, TWA, Pan Am, National. Flying today is disgusting.
Nice vid... not sure if the plane could have been RC, but anyways I find Southwest Airliens Commercials quite funny even to this day, unlike most other digital feces of commercials I see.
@Fapsamup
I completely agree. Before CGI, if you saw a great stunt or special effect in a movie, you realised it had really been done and you had a sense of wonder about how on earth they could achieve such a thing.
Now, the most 'spectacular' things just aren't special or wondrous anymore, because you know it's not real, and has just been created on computer.
It pisses me off.
@tjfreak
You're absolutely right. The wonder has gone. Look at the shouts of 'fake' when stuff like this appears.
Slightly off-topic: I saw a TV programme recently about the old-school special make-up effects artists for films (prosthetics, monsters etc.)
Many of them are now out of the business because CGI literally took their jobs. And these guys were the best - Oscar winners, in fact. The irony is that CGI looks far worse, but is far cheaper. It's very sad.
@lakewood85 Yes, I remember all too well. Back in the 60's and 70's was the BEST era imo.
@reymatt76: No such thing will ever happen, unless high-speed-rail becomes a reality and takes the pressure off of airlines. BTW, there was an executive 'adult' airline back in the 1980's...it was called MGM Grand.
I was on a flight from San Antonio to cheyenne with a 2 hour layover in Dallas and it was $2000 for 3 people in coach
I don't think she would feel it. Like getting killed by a grenade going off within a foot of you.
Bad-ass commercial.
How many takes did it take to get the right timing?
They used a taller girl originally, but she was decapitated. Great commercial. You couldn't even dream of pulling this off at any US airport nowadays...
@Guitar423 This was done with back projection, I think. The girl is standing in front of a screen, in the studio, and the camera and projector are synchronized. Go to 0:22 and look at the lighting.
I watched this a few times, and drew the same conclusion...I think. Thought. But if it was shot on a tarmac with large reflectors, any small gust of wind at all would have caused them to flutter like that, and her hair does move some as she walks away.
It was a low fly-by, not takeoff and it's a 737.
