To me, this version is the definitive version.that has. 1972 or thereabouts. shouting out...The Midnight Special. appearance is noteworthy because of Richrath guitar. prowess. Kevin is ok but.he paved. the way for the commercialized , somewhat bubblegum sound they launched.in the eighties . This. vocalist. , Mike,. showcases raw power from the Rockies .. The live is good. , as well..

@@markdraine3571 Are you familiar with the live version from the Don Kirshner show in 1974? You get the live energy, but you have Mike Murphy singing, so that might be the best of both worlds for you.
Although I think the standout from that show is their cover of Terry Reid's UK hit, "Without Expression".

Right and the best thing the band did is get Kevin Cronin, as a side note I was doing security for an outside festival in the Little town of Gilberts Illinois 1970 I think had to breakup a fight between the original singer the Lead player who the singer said was playing some of the songs too fast LOL.

    • @calkelpdiver

Kevin Cronin recorded this song originally for the album. But left the band under a cloud and was replaced with Mike Murphy by the label. Murphy re-recorded the song with the rest of the songs on the album. This song was written by Gary Richrath, lead guitarist.
Also, there is an album cover with Kevin Cronin on it in place of Murphy (original album cover before Murphy replaced Cronin).
The song is about getting stuck in a blizzard in Boulder Colorado after a concert at a bar called Tulagi's (on the Hill behind CU campus). I know, I've been to Tulagi's in the late 70's / early 80's while in High School.

This is one of the rare times when you absolutely need to set aside your planned upcoming reactions and listen to this same song again, but (as MANY have stated below) the LIVE version. Yes, the studio version is good. But the live version is GREAT. Most people don't even know this version because the live version was so huge. This song brings bad memories for us in Florida. Every time we have a hurricane come through, all the FM rock stations play this to elicit solidarity among the listeners. We are usually without power (often for days) so a battery powered radio is the only entertainment and news source we have and we'll hear this song dozens of times while hunkering down.
Sadly, we're on the bubble for a big hurricane in a few days, and I'm sure we'll be hearing this soon.😪

Mike Murphy's voice is so amazing. It was the first album to feature Mike Murphy's vocals. The sessions started out with Kevin Cronin, but he left the band before the album was finished, due to creative differences. However, later Kevin Cronin did come back to the band and the title track would later become a hit for their band on their live album. I wonder if you would be interested in giving this a listen "Sting - Russians (Lyrics)" nice reaction👍

Just turned 60. And back in my rock music days, this was a windows down rock song as you said. This song was on many playlists (cough, cough… ) cassette mix-tapes. Come on, who remembers the double sided cassette briefcase - 60 per side. Or, at the very least, 1 tape in the deck, 4 tapes in the visor. Yea, those were the days….

I asked for it,and I got it!Thanks- One of those songs that you have to see (or hear) live. They use to always end their Concerts with this song "Last Song People" lots of energy.

Hell yes I love REO Speedwagon. This was the last concert I saw about 16 years ago with my dad. It was in Waco Texas and it was $25 a ticket.

To put this in automotive terms, this is like riding in a Dodge Challenger with a 3.6 V6 when you could be in a Dodge Challenger Hellcat with a 6.2 supercharged V8. The band/make are the same, song/model are the same, but the performance for both is completely different. Do yourselves a favor and listen to the live version.

Gary Richwrath is the most under appreciated guitarist in history. You should check out flying turkey trot or Gary's guitar solo from "You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish" to hear him at his best.. One thing I have noticed about him is usually he does NOT use and kind of pedal.

True. A wah wah pedal and an overdrive occasionally that was about it.

They play a ton of State Fairs and local venues and are a great show to see. The one blessing of spending a few decades in Milwaukee area is that we have seen REO at least 10 times. Sometimes its been shows like Tesla/REO/Witesnake or REO opening for STYX.

It's been a long time since I heard the studio version , I normally listen to the live version off the album ,, A Decade Of Rock and Roll 1970 to 1980 . Flying Turkey Trot , , 157 Riverside Avenue ,, and then Riding The Storm Out , fantastic album !!! Oh yeah , I almost forgot about the song , Like You Do , it's a good one you two would probably like , off the album A Decade Of Rock and Roll 1970 to 1980 !! Keep on jammin !!!

Trivia note: the original R.E.O. Speedwagon was a truck. R.E.O. is Ransom Eli Olds, the person who also started Oldsmobile.

It has a Classic Rock feel to it because it originally got released in 1973, but did not truly pick up traction until about 1981. This is why the live version is sooo mucb greater. They had time to improve on it from the studio version. It introduced Mike Murphy in lead vocals.

Great reaction! I’m sure someone has mentioned this before but the band took their name from an old truck model made by the REO car company. REO the car company is pronounced like the city in Brazil Rio and is the initials of the founder Ransom E. Olds who also started the Oldsmobile car company. The band has a lot of great tunes and they’re very energetic live. My favorite song is on their High-Infidelity album called Tough Guys.

    J and Amber,
Picture yourselves as a husband and wife long haul trucking team. In this song the husband is the narrator talking about him driving and his wife/girl doing the navigating and they having to keep an eye on an approaching winter storm as they are about to cross the Rocky Mountain range. Meanwhile, with all of the potential troubles of being out exposed to the winter and the weather and all of the other troubles on the road, he is musing about their life on the open road "riding the storm out" vs living in the city, and declaring how much he prefers their current life. "I'm not missing a thing". 🙂
