The intro was TOTALLY Wolfman Jack - what a legend of a man. Lead singer on this one was Kevin Cronin (who actually wrote this one) - fantastic selection!!
@ajt62 - He indeed was a legend. I had the pleasure of meeting him ( Wolfman Jack), in the 90's. And Midnight Special was the best. I don't know why that show ever stopped.
Same here, love the title. My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after,
My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after.
I like that you noticed him playing the guitar in an odd way, with his thumb going over the top. He’s got the guitar tuned to an open chord so that all strings strummed open (unfretted) play a natural chord. Then pressing the thumb on the top four strings and letting the bottom two ring out on every chord creates a really nice tone.
If there ever was a Guitar solo any better than Gary’s Guitar solo on Golden Country from the Live You Get What You Play For Album I Haven’t heard it yet.🎸🎸🎸🎸
My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after.
You really need to do REO's live versions of "Ridin' the Storm Out" and "Roll With the Changes". You WILL be blown away by these guys from Champaign-Urbana, Illlinois.
I am a huge REO Speedwagon fan. Been a fan since I am 13 (I am 57) Seen them over 20 times in concert! The lead singer is Kevin Cronin. Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist was a driving force behind REO's sound. Gary left the band in 1989 & unfortunately passed away in 2015. I have a request. There is this band called "Richrath: Project 3:13. They are like an REO tribute band. They do old REO tunes plus original material. Could you do a reaction by them with the song "Heard It On The Radio"? Please & thank you!
"No One Can-ah Play the Guitar Like-ah Gary Can-ah!" -- Kevin Cronin, from the Live Album "Live: You Get What You Play For" 😉 I always got a kick out of Kevin's enunciation on that line. Solid Live Album.
Kevin Cronin is playing his guitar with just his thumb because he has his guitar in a special tuning for that song where all he has to do is put his thumb down for like 2 or 3 of the chords and one of the chords doesnt require anything on the frets, just an open strum of the strings. I found the tuning in a video online and tuned one of my acoustics in that tuning and will occasionally play this song the way he does. It's a fun little thing to do.
Went to all day concert at arrowhead stadium in k.c.. when I was younger. Light rain all day. When they played " riding the storm out " it quit raining for the 1st time all day and the crowd went nuts
It was great to hear Wolf man when I was a kid. I must have been 7 or 8 years old I got to pocket transit to radio for Christmas. It had a little ear piece. One single air piece to listen to in your ear. And it was hard class ticket actually hurt your Ear it was way before the time of ear buds. Anyways when I would go to bed. I would pull the covers over my head. Pull my radio out from under my pillow. an listen to Wolf man, Jack What a great memory.... I gotta little sidetracked there anyways. What I was gonna comment on to on was early. REO Speedwagon was my favorite. Before this album ever came out. They seem to have a more edger style than that. I really liked And they're live. performances were amazing.
I love REO, I grew up listening to them. I lost my sister-in law in 2021( just four months after losing my brother) and this was the main song she wanted played at her funeral.. She was even a bigger REO fan. Can't Fight this feeling is another amazing song!!
You 2, listen to so much music that I listened to in the 70 and the late 80s,. That was the best time. So much great music,, thanks for reminding me how great that time was
You have to remember, back when MTV was very young and video was just up and coming, Recordings were done in a studio. Electronic mixing in this era was non existent. So voice clarity and instrumentals had to be spot on!
I make you laugh, and you make me cry I believe it’s time for me to fly! Time for me to fly Oh I’ve got to set myself free Time for me to fly And that’s just how it’s got to be I know it hurts to say goodbye But it’s time for me to fly Love this song!
First of all, THANK YOU so much for returning to REO. You may recall the band's history; after 5 unsuccessful albums with three different lead singers, the label said that if they wanted their contract renewed, they had to get rid of Mike Murphy (the redhead that Jordan liked on "Riding the Storm Out") and bring back Kevin Cronin, seen here. That sixth album, although still not a smash, was enough to convince the label to re-sign them and commission the live album, "You Get What You Play For", which is a complete classic. Amber, 90% of the time I agree that the studio albums are a good starting point…but every rule has exceptions. With Cheap Trick, you want to hear the "At Budokan" live album…and for REO, "You Get What You Play For" is a serious *MUST* You want suggestions? Start at the beginning of that live album, with one of Gary Richrath's classic songs "Like You Do" and go straight through to the end, Gary's ultimate masterpiece "Golden Country". Plenty of great songs by Kevin on there as well, and the only song you have already heard is "Riding the Storm Out", and you heard Mike Murphy, so hearing Kevin sing it live will be new as well. DO THIS NOW. (Please?) After the success of the live album, they went back to the studio and came up with their eighth album, "You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish", which features IMO the two best songs Kevin Cronin ever wrote, namely "Roll with the Changes" and this. This is a very personal song for Kevin. In High School he was a skinny little thing and the "Tough Guys" used to beat him up and call him gay. So when he finally did get a girlfriend, he clung to the relationship…perhaps a bit too long. Once it became clear that things were not working (see the lyrics here), he broke it off, but couldn't do it face to face, waiting until the band's first tour outside of Illinois. (This was the trip where the band got caught in the Rocky Mountains, leading Gary to write "Riding the Storm Out".) Although he wrote the song in 1973, Kevin was fired from the band not long after, and so it didn't get recorded until Kevin was already dating his first wife Denise, whom he'd been pursuing after this breakup, as Kevin details in "Roll with the Changes" . So it all fits together, nicely. ("Keep On Loving You", which you have covered, is about Kevin's reaction to discovering that Denise was cheating on him, but that is a whole other story.) Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. And again, next should be "Like You Do", the first track off of the 1977 live album, "You Get What You Play For", please. Trust me. I gave you "Father Christmas". I gave you Traffic. TRUST ME. :)
That's a good one, it takes me back to 1987 it was playing on a sweet pair of Pioneer DSS-7 speakers in Best Buy. It sounded amazing, I saved up and bought those speakers for $455/pr. that was a pretty hefty sum back then especially since I was making $4/hr. Still have them and they still rock!! NO REGERTS! 🤘😝🤘
You'll love "Golden Country" for it's composition, message and Gary's shredding solo. On the other side, there's "In Your Letter", a 60's-inspired tune that showcases Neil's keyboard mastery. And again: The Guess Who's tribute song "Clap for the Wolfman" - starring the Wolman himself. Good stuff, Maynard.
Another great song! I'm still waiting for you to do the live version of Riding the Storm Out because the album version you reacted to is nothing like the live which made the song a huge hit. The entire composition is different and it was one of the best parts of their tour. I know you've already done Roll With The Changes but the live of that one is fabulous too. Others to check out - Don't Let Him Go, In Your Letter, Shakin' It Loose Tonight, Out of Season, I Wish You Were There
Nice reaction you two, to this lovely REO Speedwagon tune!! Don't forget you were on your way to check out Blood Sweat and Tears and their song "Hi-De-Ho"! Best wishes and plenty of smiles to both of you!
Phenomenal guitar solo by the late great Gary Richrath! He was REO speedwagon! Without him I guarantee you that the REO catalog wouldn't be what it is now!
I knew REO from their very beginning, being a college Jr. at Ill State Univ. fall of 1967.They played many gigs at the University Union and Dormitory Dances around campus. They played at local pubs [ Red Lion ] in Bloomington .At Champaign [ U of Illinois] ,where they were students. They played venues such as Frat parties and pubs [ Chances R ] and many others. They were always very friendly, became very good friends with their fans and developed a huge local following. They payed their dues and finally made it to the " big time" . Never, did they forgot where they came from. A most underrated band with a great deal of musical acumen. They were fun to be around and we were glad to call them our friends. RIP Gary !
Great song, and one of the most underrated guitarists of all time, Gary Richrath owning that Les Paul like he always did. REO was a great band, but the years with Richrath were special. RIP to one of the greatest to ever do it.
I vote for the studio version too. Live is great, but for these memories I want to hear the song I heard on the radio a thousand times. Give it a listen in the car on the way to school. Singer is Kevin Cronin. The guitar was tuned specifically for this song. He could play a few chords with just a bar using his thumb or even open if you watch closely. As others have already commented I vote for "I Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Tough Guys".
The whole album Hi Infidelity is awesome. Love this band. I’ve seen them live 7 times. They have one of the best entrances I’ve ever seen and they do awesome solos. Try Can’t Fight this Feeling, Keep On Loving You, Take it On the Run & more!
“Don’t Let Him Go” is definitely a great next REO reaction. Live shows depend on the artist and the performance itself for me. When those two click, it’s magic. I have to listen to the initial studio version first, and then the live version. Then you really get to hear, and sometimes see, how they brought out the song more, audibly and visually. Pink Floyd, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Freddie Mercury, Meat Loaf, Prince are a few of my favorite live performers. They ARE their music.
Nothing tops the energy of REO’s live performance of this song! 💜 Every now and then you get a band that actually have better live performances than the album. REO IS one of those bands 🥰💜
Omg, I was just talking about REO Speedwagon with my bff just a couple hours ago!!! We were talking about Ridin' the Storm Out (you reacted to the studio version with the singer before Kevin Cronin, but I LOOOOOVE the live version w KC,) and I Can't Fight this Feeling
You guys need to get back to Foreigner!! I can't believe you guys haven't done, Waiting for a girl Like You!! The studio version!! You guys will LOVE it!! In case you guys think you have already did it, you did, I want to know what love is.
REO live is really good. One good thing about them is they are very consistent in their performances. I am still pushing for you to react to some live shows that have been released on dvd.. maybe like special occasions.. once every 2-3 months. I bring up the Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense, Dan Fogelberg: Greetings from the West, Billy Joel: in NY, Jimi and the Band of Gypsys: fillmore east, and REO: sirius xm acoustic show. Just for starters.🎉
This song came from a much loved album of theirs. My fave track from that album was "Say you love me....or say goodnight". It's a wild ride ! One to get you on your feet. Guitar solos.....piano solos.....sax solos ! Great, great song!
Rarely can I come up with a song from one group's or artist's portfolio that is literally my favorite, simply because I actually do enjoy the wide range of songs performed. But, in this case, of all REO songs, Time For Me To Fly is my favorite along with Roll With The Changes.
You are right on about touring and performing!!! That is part of what made so many groups great in the 60s, 70s and 80s. If you made a great studio album but couldn't repeat and improve it on stage no one bought the next album. It was part of the culture and it was a paramount expectation from fans that when you went to a concert you would get the studio version +100x in power, experience and delivery. You had to be able to play live cuz there was no auto tune, pitch correction or technology to hide behind.
Finally, REO Speedwagon! Good selection guys. I have seen them many times. I even caught a drumstick thrown in the audience from them! Looking for a real banger next time, checkout "Back On The Road Again" which was written and sung by their bass player Bruce Hall. Thanks.😎
REO live about 10 years ago was the loudest concert i ever been too and they sounded so good it was unreal. We would cup our hands around someones ear and yell and couldn't hear a word they said.
Saw them in 1985 and they were amazing live. Then in 2018 with Styx and Don Felder. They were just as great. Such a great band. And the lead singer is Kevin Cronin.
I saw them in 2018 as well with Styx and Don Felder in Denver, I believe! Fantastic concert! Totally lost my voice that night, lol. I got picks from Kevin, Tommy, JY, Chuck and Don. They were all great and really love their fans. They're all classy guys!! Best concert!! 🎶💜
REO is an incredible band, I saw them on their Wheels are Turnin' tour in Greensboro, NC in 1985 - Survivor was their opening act (Eye of the Tiger - the Rocky III Theme)....that entire 3 hours was nothing but hit after hit from both bands. They even performed together for a couple of songs, I had never seen anything like it before! That was my senior year of high school and I saw what I thought was going to be three bands perform at that location that year, but of the three, two of them had opening acts that were also producing chart toppers at the time: Foreigner with Giuffria opening, REO with Survivor & then Chicago.... their opening act cancelled so their opener was an unknown solo guitarist. Chicago was great though - the Peter Cetera days just prior to his departure from the band in June of '85.
I love REO Speedwagon and this is one of my favorite songs. It's off their 1978 album called "You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish" that came out the year I graduated high school. So glad you liked it. I love the studio version, but it was so nice to see them live. Oh and that was Wolfman Jack that introduced them - can't mistake that voice for anyone else. 😁
REO sounds great live for sure - but I prefer the studio version of this song - it’s total perfection.
Absolutely.
100% agree! Studio version is the way to hear their perfection.
💯
I totally agree about the studio version! breathtaking!!!
For sure
The intro was TOTALLY Wolfman Jack - what a legend of a man. Lead singer on this one was Kevin Cronin (who actually wrote this one) - fantastic selection!!
@ajt62 - He indeed was a legend. I had the pleasure of meeting him ( Wolfman Jack), in the 90's. And Midnight Special was the best. I don't know why that show ever stopped.
I miss his voice. Classic
This is one of my favorite REO songs. It comes from an album with one of the greatest names ever: "You Can Tune a Piano but you Can't Tuna Fish."
I concur. That has always been my favorite album name.
Yes, great album name. Right up there with Joe Walsh's "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get" 😊
They definitely knew how to make a catchy album title. There next one, Hi-InFidelity, which was a play on the term Hi-Fi was another great one.
My mom loved this song! She would say Mary play that song with the fish.
Same here, love the title. My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after,
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Can't Fight This Feeling" !!!
Is there anyone alive who hasn't heard that yet? It's funny how music reactors are the only ones who have never heard any music before. 😂
They did that. It was their second REO reaction (after Keep on Loving You, inevitably.)
Oh yay! Another ballad! 👎
@@Jessica_Roth musta got taken down
"Can't fight this feeling" is probably the worst song REO ever recorded. Truly awful. Time for me to fly is their best.
REO Speedwagon are true musicians. So many bands are simply characters. They are ahead of their time.
My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after.
Um, ok. Except there's about 100,000 better musicians! 😂
ROLL WITH THE CHANGES. Gotta hear.
Don't Let Him Go - very underrated REO song! The drums are great in it! More of a high energy tune I think y'all would love!
Yes!
Great suggestion.
One of my favorites!
I think this is my favorite REO song
RIP Gary Richrath, underrated guitar God. Amazing tone and beautiful leads. Keep On Loving You or Riding The Syorm Out are REO musts
Gary was so excellent ❤
Amen, brother.
He was one heck of a Guitarist
If there ever was a Guitar solo any better than Gary’s Guitar solo on Golden Country from the Live You Get What You Play For Album I Haven’t heard it yet.🎸🎸🎸🎸
Probably my favorite REO song!! 🥰
Riding the storm out live is soooo good.
My ex-wife heard me sing along with this song, before we got divorced and said I sang it with a lot of feeling. Little did she know, I filed for divorce a little after.
I'm so old REO Speedwagon played at my freshman Homecoming in high school (Chicago area).
You guys are amazing . I never seen anyone get so lost in the music like i do until i seen your vids. You made a new friend .
“Can’t fight this Feeling” “In My Dreams” “Here With Me” “Keep on Loving You”. Are their best ballads.
You really need to do REO's live versions of "Ridin' the Storm Out" and "Roll With the Changes". You WILL be blown away by these guys from Champaign-Urbana, Illlinois.
YES
Don't forget 157 Riverside Avenue, definitely a banger
Love the first one!
Songs that Gary could let loose on and GO. Not so much the rest of the time, which is sad. Grossly underrated.
So true. The live version is so much better than the recorded version of Ridin' the Storm Out. Truly one of the greatest live song performances IMHO.
You two are the new MTV. I would have watched you as VJays back in the day. Thanks for doing what you do.
Wow, it has been a good long while since I heard that term, VJ's. I really miss the old MTV.
Exactly right….👍What an evolution since the beginning of the channel!

Their "High Infidelity" album is a masterpiece !
I wore it out. Man, that album was so huge!
Definitely a classic album! One of my first vinyls!
Absolutely 💯
That was one of those albums that nearly everyone in my high school bought when it came out.

Great choice! This is one of my very favorite REO Speedwagon songs, and they’ve got several to choose from. 😍
So, so good. "Well you got me stealing your love away.... Cause you never give it".
REO has so many worthy songs. This is one of my favorites!

Can't fight this feeling, is one of my favorites 🥰🥰
Roll with the Changes is a great song by REO.

You want suggestions? Start at the beginning of that live album, with one of Gary Richrath's classic songs "Like You Do" and go straight through to the end, Gary's ultimate masterpiece "Golden Country". Plenty of great songs by Kevin on there as well, and the only song you have already heard is "Riding the Storm Out", and you heard Mike Murphy, so hearing Kevin sing it live will be new as well.
DO THIS NOW. (Please?)
After the success of the live album, they went back to the studio and came up with their eighth album, "You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish", which features IMO the two best songs Kevin Cronin ever wrote, namely "Roll with the Changes" and this.
("Keep On Loving You", which you have covered, is about Kevin's reaction to discovering that Denise was cheating on him, but that is a whole other story.)
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. And again, next should be "Like You Do", the first track off of the 1977 live album, "You Get What You Play For", please.
Trust me. I gave you "Father Christmas". I gave you Traffic. TRUST ME. :)

And I agree golden country should be next I've 😂seen REO 9 times they Rock.
Great song; one of their very best! I suggest "That Ain't Love" for your next song from the group.
Keep Pushin is a great REO Speedwagon song
Greatest breakup song ever
Omg, I was just talking about REO Speedwagon with my bff just a couple hours ago!!! We were talking about Ridin' the Storm Out (you reacted to the studio version with the singer before Kevin Cronin, but I LOOOOOVE the live version w KC,) and I Can't Fight this Feeling
I love Dolly Parton's version of this song too! Funny, I was in my 20s before I realized that her's was a cover. Both are amazing!
Wow! I had no idea Dolly Parton covered this song. I learned so much from this channel about the songs, about the musicians, and about the covers.
It WAS Wolfman Jack! He was the announcer for many of the Midnight Special Shows.
You guys need to get back to Foreigner!! I can't believe you guys haven't done, Waiting for a girl Like You!! The studio version!! You guys will LOVE it!! In case you guys think you have already did it, you did, I want to know what love is.
A good REO song is Golden Country! One of their early and best hits!!
Another great one from REO Speedwagon. You should check out Journey's "Stone in Love" (Live 1981: Escape Tour). The energy is phenomenal! 💯💪🔥
Bout’ time you got back to Reeeo Speedwagon! One of the GOATs of 70s rock!
As hard as it is to pick just one REO is my favorite band of all time
Rarely can I come up with a song from one group's or artist's portfolio that is literally my favorite, simply because I actually do enjoy the wide range of songs performed. But, in this case, of all REO songs, Time For Me To Fly is my favorite along with Roll With The Changes.
Please do their song- don’t let him go
My favorite REO Speedwagon song I Love Y'all Stay Blessed I'm Happy I found you always make my day Love You Both
Finally
"Don't let him go" is such a rockin' song of theirs, with a KILLER guitar solo ..!!!!! A must listen for all REO fans...!!!
I love REO Speedwagon. Absolutely classic legend.
Golden Country. The message still resonates today.
Totally underrated band! Incredible
Have you done 'Heard it from a Friend'? I love that song.
"Say You Love Me or Say Goodnight" is an absolute banger with killer sax as well!!
Finally, REO Speedwagon! Good selection guys. I have seen them many times. I even caught a drumstick thrown in the audience from them! Looking for a real banger next time, checkout "Back On The Road Again" which was written and sung by their bass player Bruce Hall. Thanks.😎
I've seen REO 2 times in concert. They are great live! I've always loved them.
I was conceived at an REO concert in the 80s. Their music has always been special to me and this song has always been my favorite of theirs.
REO live about 10 years ago was the loudest concert i ever been too and they sounded so good it was unreal. We would cup our hands around someones ear and yell and couldn't hear a word they said.
Seen them several times with Styx. Such a great band.
Golden county LIVE!!! Jay will love it!
That’s definitely Wolfman Jack-surprised you guys know him. Thought he’d have been before your time.
They are so good at songs with an emotional punch, and this sounds so good live. Several of their hits were released as live singles.
Jay. You will really like don't let him go. It is a rockin song
one of my favorite Reo SpeedWagon song
Nothing like a live show. Nothing. And a band like this that was so big and played such huge songs.....Great reaction you two. Thank you.
