IRONICALLY, this song with Nancy in vocals was their most successful on the charts. It hit #1.
Alone also made number one. Alone and All I wanna do were bigger worldwide.
It was their first #1, but it wouldn't be their last.
It also was not written by them but by Martin Page. During that period a lot of bands were contracted by their studios to use material the studio decided would be successful for a band. Both Ann and Nancy have stated that they weren't happy with the arrangement, but they really like this song and others that they did not write.
@@Rabbithole8 I suspect the studio wanting Nancy to take more of the vocals was because this was the same point in history where Ann was really struggling to stay at an "aesthetically pleasing" weight. The studio wanted svelte rocker chicks they could slap onto posters and Ann's body wasn't cooperating, so they wanted to get Nancy in the front more often.
@@singingwordwright148 You are exactly right.
Nancy sang the lead on this one. She can sing too. She's usually singing harmony. Nice to hear her on lead. This was one of their biggest power ballads.
I wouldn't call this a power ballad. It's a ballad.
It takes more skill to sing harmony than lead. They've both got it all.
Echo🤣
No need to inform them of things that they already know.
@@jp3813 no need to be a big ol dick 😒
Wow I never heard this one said no one ever
Heart doesn't get enough love...the Wilson sisters are such legends
Lyrics written by Bernie Taupin same guy that wrote all of Elton Johns lyrics. Nancy had a cold when she sang and didn't like the result but fortunetly Ann talked her into not re-recording.
Umm, if they are legends then they DO get enough love. 😉 and deservedly so.
They're in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
@@bobsandler4563 yes they are
Beyond.....
Sharon Hess, a fan of Heart and friend to Nancy, brought her custom made guitar in the studio when they were recording this song Sadly, Sharon died of leukemia 2 days after the final recording. Nancy said in an interview that she thinks of Sharon every time she sings this song.
Heart is still one of the greatest female bands ever! They are amazing still one of my favorites!
Heart is one of the greatest bands ever! FIFY 😉
Heart has male band members.
@@jp3813 Yes I know that so does Joan Jett and the Blackhearts but they speak of her she's an iconic female rocker just like Heart when they speak of Heart they speak Ann and Nancy Wilson they are the ones who lead these groups. I grew up listening to Heart as a kid I know they have male band players.
@@mikeortiz6008 Female-led bands, sure. But female bands are the likes of The Runaways, The Bangles, The Go-Go's, Klymaxx, Vixen, etc...
@@jp3813 Sorry to hurt your gender driven mind lol
Nancy singing with a bad cold still sounds better than most singers today 😂 Favorite Heart song! So nostalgic for me! That rasp was caused by phlegm 😂
🎵 The hills are alive with the sound of mucus. 🎶
I love Nancy's voice. Obviously, their harmonies are dreamy, but I always enjoy when Nancy gets to show off her chops as well. Definitely listen to "Dog and Butterfly" for a beautifully soft, yet powerful, ballad with lots of harmony.
I love that song so much!
Song was originally offered to Stevie Nicks, but she passed. When it was offered to Heart, Nancy begged to sing it & did. Nancy has such a beautiful voice.
My favorite heart song. Sung by Nancy and lyrics written by the great Bernie Taupin, who wrote so many fantastic Elton John songs. Nancy has that rasp due to having a cold at the time of the recording.
I learned that on pop up video I think
Cool I didn’t know that 🙂
I miss Pop Up Video. *nostalgic*
Better than Magic Man and Crazy on you? I don't think so.
They can have whatever favorite song they want, Michael. Jesus.
Ann does backup and harmonies on this song. This is a rare jewel that is Nancy on lead vocals
Strangely, This was Heart's first number one hit. After all that great music they produced. They did add another number one later with "Alone"
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Journey also never had a #1 hit. Crazy!
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Competition was fierce back then.
@@BillGraper Reaching 2nd place was no small feat in the 80s.
Seems the number ones started about the time MTv was taking over… just more exposure maybe?
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT really? That's stunning? How did Born in the usa not reach 1? As a kid I remeber that being everywhere?
This is from their self titled comeback album "Heart" in 1985. They had so many hits from this album. "These Dreams" "What About Love" "Never" "Nothin' At All" ""If Looks Could Kill" They followed this album up with their just as big "Bad Animals" album in 1987.
I like Toronto's original recording of "What About Love".
Their best album!!
"Comeback"? When did they leave?
@@daverhoden445 Less I guess a comeback in the sense of leaving and coming back, but in fading away and coming back as at least the previous album hadn't done so well.
BIG ALBUM!
My favorite Heart song. I remember watching this video every day on MTV in 1986 and voting for it on the top 10 countdown every night.
This is the first time you’ve heard Nancy singing lead. Turned out to be one of their biggest hits.
For an older ballad of theirs, try “Dog and Butterfly.”
This was there only #1 hit.
Dog and Butterfly!! 💕
@@kens32052 I think Alone was a number 1 too.
They already talked about hearing Nancy singing lead for the first time in this video. No need for Captain Obvious.
@@jp3813 I wrote the comment at the beginning of the reaction. I left it up because they thought this was the first time hearing Nancy, and I was confirming their suspicion. No need to be a 🤡 trying to score internet points, for whatever that’s worth IRL.
Nancy said in an interview that when she recorded this song she had a cold and was afraid that it wouldn't sound good. When they listened to it afterward they decided to keep it as is. It turned out awesome.
Great song...great selection guys. Nancy would be the lead singer in any other band....that's how amazing these girls are
Huge hit for this band. And rightly so. Beautiful ❤ 🎙 🎵
Jay & Amber, you will LOVE their "Kick It Out", "Never" and "Dog And Butterfly"!!!
Kick It Out on vinyl you can hear them in the studio booth right before the first note.
Amber you'll love "Dog and Butterfly" it's a slower song as well but the vocals! Nearly every Heart fan has it as one of their favorites.
Also, Dreamboat Annie.
It’s my favorite by heart, when I was little (like 3-6) my mom owned a camero and every time dog and butterfly came on it was too low to hear well even all the way up (this was mid 80’s) so I’d get down in the floor if my seat and stick my head up next to the speaker until the song was over.
@@beedeegee9374 yeah, see, I’ve always found dreamboat Annie kind of boring. Yeah she sounds good but there’s always been something about that song that never connected with me 🤷🏼♀️
Huh. I'm a big Heart fan, and I have literally never liked this song. You can't account for taste, right? But, you did say, "NEARLY..."
Man! These girls rock harder than most men!!!! My Mom played Heart for us growing up, and my brothers and I are huge fans!! My Mom just saw them about a year ago live, and they still got it!!! Thanks!!!!
Have such a random memory associated with this song: at my junior high in 86/87 we had a magician do a Magic show for the students in the gymnasium. While he was making his female assistant disappear this song was playing. Never fails to make me think of that when I hear this!😂
The song takes me right back to a magic show too. I saw David Copperfield's show in Singapore in the early 90s, and he played this song.
This single became their very 1st #1 single in America on March 22, 1986!!!
Ann Wilson has a duet coming out in November with David Draiman of Disturbed, called Don't Tell Me, just an FYI, supposed to be a killer song from what Disturbed is promoting..
They are such a talented duo I have loved them since my teens
Yes! These sisters are just amazing!!!
I love Heart sooo much!! One of my absolute favorite songs of theirs is There’s the girl!!
The beauty of reacting to an official video over a live video is you get a story and telling visuals.
Heart had a whole truck load of big hits in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, but this one has to be up towards the top of the heap!
Heart in the 80s was heavy on power ballads. Always a good time listening to heart no matter the decade
Agreed, and the long career says a lot about their solid talent
“Never” is fantastic! I loved my 80s Heart!
I love Heart! I was in love with them when I was growing up ❤
The 80s was the most iconic era of music.
Those sister harmonies are perfection. Heart is such a great band. 💜
If you need another reason to love Heart, they did so much for the Seattle scene in the early 90’s (grunge era), letting Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden all rehearse at their studio in Seattle and mentored them on contract issues so they didn’t get screwed over & are still friends with a lot of them…
My favorite Heart song .
this is one of those magic surrealistic rock songs. when it came out, every time it came on the radio, i sat bolt upright.
Dog and butterfly, live in Seattle is a MUST listen too!!
Nancys vocals on ‘Nada One’ and ‘Will You Be There’ are killing too. 👍
I saw in an interview with Ann that they decided to have Nancy sing this one because it fit her personality so well.
“Never” is a banger. “What about Love” also a banger.
Heart "ALONE" is my favorite ❤️
Omg the lyrics on this song keeps me in tears! “I search for the time on a watch with no hands”
“ Funny how your feet in dreams and never touch the earth”
😭😭😭priceless!!❤
Lyrics: Spare a little candle
Save some light for me
Figures up ahead
Moving in the trees
White skin in linen
Perfume on my wrist
And the full moon that hangs over
These dreams in the mist
Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands
I want to see you clearly
Come closer than this
But all I remember
Are the dreams in the mist
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
Is it cloak 'n' dagger
Could it be spring or fall
I walk without a cut
Through a stained glass wall
Weaker in my eyesight
The candle in my grip
And words that have no form
Are falling from my lips
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
There's something out there
I can't resist
I need to hide away from the pain
There's something out there
I can't resist
The sweetest song is silence
That I've ever heard
Funny how your feet
In dreams never touch the earth
In a wood full of princes
Freedom is a kiss
But the prince hides his face
From dreams in the mist
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away
Yes, I'm like Jay and don't remember my dreams. Every once in awhile I may remember a tiny bit but it's almost always nothing. I do love this song. Apparently Nancy ended up singing lead because she had a cold and produced that amazing rasp! Both sisters are so talented and I'm so happy to see you enjoying their music.
I'm the same way with dreams. I may remember a tiny portion once in a while, but never the entire dream.
I remember consciously turning my dreams off as a teenager because I had some worrisome dreams, not quite nightmares in my opinion, but they bothered me.
Love heart...Truly great...How about some blues for female Friday...I would suggest Etta James singing At Last...
As said before, this song is lyrics by Bernie Taupin, Elton's song writing partner. I believe Nancy wrote music. And of course Nancy in lead singing. This was a HUGE hit.
Martin Page wrote the music.
Great song, I've always liked it. Crazy thing is that Ann is the voice you think of when you think of Heart, but this song with Nancy singing lead is Heart's biggest hit and their first song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
One of my favorite Heart songs.
These Dreams - those people who remember their dreams can relate - in dreams I've had friends I never knew, I've loved, died, flown, laughed, been enlightened -- the subconscious mind is the artistic side of everyone, the dream generator, the mystic at the heart of the undiscovered self - and who are you, that has such dreams -
This is my favorite song by *Heart* .
It's so beautiful, romantic and the lyrics are deep. It makes me emotional and I'm good with that. 🙂
*Amber* , I dream no matter how long or short I sleep. Doze off for two minutes, I dream. I have extremely vivid and detailed dreams and have been told to write a book about them. 😀 I've even had a few lucid dreams, which are quite the experience.
Whenever I'd tell my family I wanted to tell them about a dream, especially when I was younger, they'd say to each other "Let's get a snack, everyone go to the bathroom before she starts, get your comfy pillow and blanket..." 😄 They knew it'd be a long story coming, but listened to every word without any complaints. ❤️
My younger brother very rarely dreamed until he became an adult living on his own, and it was still rare. He's now married with two daughters and dreams a tiny bit more. Maybe it has something to do with work and responsibilities as he gets older.
You can actually find a video here on UA-cam of Nancy in studio recording this song (back in the 80's) and she absolutely kills it. She's incredible ❤
Yeah that's right. Shes a hell of a singer in her own right!👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
Beautiful song from the Wilson sisters
Every girlfriend, I had in high school, chose this song as our song. Made it easy to remember. Lol
If they all had the same first name you would have been the luckiest guy on the planet!
The wonderful Wilson Sisters!! Isn't is great to hear Nancy singing lead. This has a definite 80's sensibility and is very polished. Wow, I don't know how many times I saw the video on MTV in 1986. I love it.
Earlier this year I lost my mom and she absolutely loved this song I can't ever get through this song without tears I miss ya mom... every moment I'm awake the further I'm away hits so hard
I have loved these beautiful, and talented women since the 70's. You guys are doing a great job, much love to both of you!!
I don’t usually dream. Every once in awhile I do wake up with a partial memory of one, but that’s very rare. Thanks for reacting to this Heart song, Nancy has a great voice too!
Are you a heavy sleeper? Pretty much everyone has dreams, but a lot of people can’t remember them. I am a very light sleeper and remember a lot of my dreams in great detail. Supposedly you need to dream or you’ll go insane.
My absolute favorite Heart song. I love Nancy Wilson on lead vocals. She’s so incredibly talented and somewhat overlooked in the shadow of her sister Annie.
If you love Heart, as do I, how about doing something from the woman who carries the name. Beth Hart. It’s been a long time since we have visited Beth.
♥️✌🏼😎
A shout out to all us 80s kids who were there enjoying the old MTV videos.
Oh, to go back there and never leave. Happiest days of my life.
They bring a tear to my eye every time I hear them sing 😂😂
I have been subscribed since nearly the beginning of your channel and I LOVE how much you guys have evolved. You are becoming music experts. Its AWESOME!
Ditto!
Another peaceful gem of theirs is "Dog And Butterfly." I HIGHLY recommend checking out them playing it LIVE. You can hear their beautiful harmonies without the slick studio production.
That album on general is amazing. Mistral Wind is an all time favorite. And High Time.
I believe the live version is better than the studio version.
@@alberthaust4542
I think I agree. It seems, beyond the music itself, more emotion comes across in the live version.
You have to see these girls! I've seen them twice and I cried each time. If they come back, I'm there!
This their first number one hit, and Nancy was singing lead. Can you imagine Ann Wilson as your backup singer?
The Wilson sisters are amazing, and always will be, but their great band doesn't get enough love. Kudos to them.
If you guy's love Nancy's vocals here are two great hit songs in which she sings lead: 1) There's The Girl 2) Stranded (Has a nice lead guitar solo).
Ann also sings lead on the outstanding love ballad titled 'I Want You So Bad.' Enjoy!
2002 live in Seattle heart plays minstrel wind , best ever version of the song. Starts slow with Nancy and gets hard .
You're not alone J, I don't dream either. VERY occasionally there are a few fragments of something when I wake, like maybe ten times in the last 30 years or so. It is very much I go away and then I come back again. I have one dream from around 16 years of age, that is the only dream I can remember. That was 33 years ago.
Like others, this is my all time favorite of Heart! I love to sing this when I go karaoke. It's always a big hit and people love it! How can they not love anything from Heart, right?
🤘🏼💚Love Heart so much… whether they’re rocking our hearts out, or showing us their softer side, I love it all. This song takes me to a very specific place in my memory but I’m having a hard time putting words to it, I guess an easier time of life or something like that…thanks for the feeling memory guys 💕😎 I know it’s not quite fitting for a reaction channel but their “B-sides” have some really beautiful music if you’re ever looking for background music in the house or some thing like that… Like ‘dream of the archer’ or ‘sylvan song’ on the B-side of Little Queen…such a great album✌
By the way, you actually are dreaming Jay you’re just not remembering and that’s OK. Many people don’t remember and don’t need to, for me personally if I don’t remember my dreams I feel like I’m gonna go insane! My mom hasn’t remembered a dream since she was a child and she’s totally fine with it. If you want to train yourself to remember your dreams you can, you don’t need to though, your brain is storing them in the exact place that they need to go for you. Sweetest of dreams to you both and reach out if you want to talk about it sometime 🌌✨💙🌙
ahhh the 80's..one of the most beautiful ballad i've ever heard
The drummer at that time was Denny Carmassi, I loved his drumming, a real showman
All ways had a huge crush on both, I couldn't make up my mind. I think they write children books? No one ever came close to their sound. Thanks again for this memory, smile.
So talented. Loved their 70s sound and their 80s sound. So many great tunes!
I'm like Amber my dreams are in full color and I know I'm dreaming alot of times, and if I wake up I can immediately pick up where I left off. Heart will always be my favorite duo 🌹❤️
"If Looks Could Kill"--one of their best bangers and a message for men about the perils of fooling around.
The album this came off is 100% fire - every song is great!
Most of my dreams I don’t remember, but a few I do, and I never tell about my bad dreams , only the good ones (like walking through a mansion or something) . Heart band was hot in the MTV 80’s! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This takes me straight back to my senior class trip, 1986. Damn, I'm bloody old.
Everyone dreams but not everyone remembers their dreams. The dream state is required for mental health - without it, the brain can develop a psychosis. There is some amazing scientific research out there about dreams and dream states and how you can train yourself to not only remember your dreams, but direct them
These girls rock! My fave band. Nancy has a great voice too, although has a sweeter tone to it IMO. Apparently she recorded the track while full of a cold (could account for the raspiness in her vocals). I believe the song was originally given to Stevie Nicks who turned it down. At least Heart got a major hit out of it!
This song created a lot of chatter between Heart fans. Some fans resented that it was so soft rather than the hard- hitting songs they came to love with Ann singing lead. Others appreciated seeing another side to the group and finally getting to hear what Nancy could do with the lead. My opinion is that Nancy was the best choice for lead vocal on this song because her voice has a softer tone. After all, it's a dreamy (pun intended) song. If anything the buzz got people listening to it even more. Heart is my all- time favorite group. I never heard a bad song from them.
Lyrics by Taupin, music by Martin Page, who you did not know was a staple of 80’s music (Ghostbusters, We Built This City, and more), has 6-7 self albums out. Now has a podcast where he talks behind the scenes of songs he’s worked on, found the demo of this song and played it, and spot on - very few changes from demo to final product with Heart singing.
This song takes me back to the days I'd do anything to be able to relive again.
Yesss!!! Best days of my life. I would go back and never leave. 😭
I love this song by heart. I'm glad you guys did it You should check out the song "Piano in the Dark" by Brenda Russell
Está canción es miel para mis oídos... temazo de los 80.. saludos desde sudamérica -chile 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱👍
Two songs by Heart I would recommend are Dreamboat Annie and Dog and Butterfly. If you want great live song by another group I would recommend Silver Springs live from the Album The Dance by Fleetwood Mac.
Nancy sings lead on "Treat Me Well" from the "Little Queen" album. It's one of my favorites, also a very gentle song.
I could take a 5 minute nap and have a really bizarre dream. Sometimes I start dreaming moments before I actually fall asleep, which is actually called "hypnagogia."
Favorite song Heart did. That raspy note Nancy hits....
I actually remember watching this video debut on MTV and loving it. 💕
'
"These Dreams" is the song that first made me fall in love with Heart. It still is my favorite song by these ladies!
This song could not be missed from the Heart reaction list. It was a big hit for them. I love your little story about dreams. Sometimes I wake up and I want to continue that nice dream. Then I have to lie back in the same position and sometimes I succeed.
Nancy is an amazing singer too!! Heart is AMAZING!
All of life truly is a dream...a walking meditation...all are souls having a momentary incarnation...
Nancy said in an interview once that she had a cold when she recorded These Dreams and it was their first No. 1 hit. She said she had been trying to get back that sound for years.
I saw Heart in concert in 1978 at the old Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. Walter Egan (Magnet & Steel) opened for them.
I always thought this was Ann restrained and on vocals. Because at that MTV time the record label was showcasing Nancy in the videos because she was slimmer with Ann's vocals leading. Nice to know that it actually is Nancy singing. She is a phenomenal talent in her own right
And Nancy's signature KICK is present as usual!
Heart has so many great songs. I love female rockers!
